A responsible manuscript check is a documented review, not a pass/fail scan. Start with the author agreement or publisher policy, protect the unpublished file, inspect drafts and version history, read substantial passages in context, and discuss specific concerns with the author. A detector can add a limited signal when its use is permitted, but neither a low score nor a high score proves who wrote a passage. The Authors Guild advises that “No publisher, agent, or other person should rely solely on an AI detector to determine if a book contains AI text” (Authors Guild guidance, October 13, 2026).

What can an AI detector actually tell you about a manuscript?

An AI-writing detector estimates whether the text submitted to a particular model resembles patterns in the model’s training and calibration data. It does not observe drafting, prompting, editing, or the identity of the writer. Treat the result as one review prompt among several, never as an authorship certificate.

  • A percentage is not a probability of misconduct. A reported 70% does not mean the tool has established that 70% of the manuscript was generated by AI.
  • Scores are tool- and text-dependent. Language, genre, formatting, passage length, model version, and the tool’s threshold can all change the result.
  • False positives and false negatives are both possible. Turnitin states that false positives—human writing incorrectly flagged as AI—can occur in its models (Turnitin AI Writing Report guidance).
  • Similarity and AI percentages are different measures. Turnitin distinguishes its AI-writing estimate from its plagiarism-similarity score; one does not validate the other.

OpenAI withdrew its own AI classifier on July 20, 2023 because of low accuracy. Its published evaluation—26% of AI text labeled likely AI-written and 9% of human text incorrectly labeled—describes that discontinued classifier and its 2023 test set, not the performance of current detectors or competing services (OpenAI’s announcement).

Which policy are you trying to apply?

Define the decision before opening a detector. Checking compliance with a signed publishing contract, preparing an Amazon KDP disclosure, investigating a disputed paragraph, and trying to support a human-authorship claim require different evidence. A score cannot answer a policy question that has not been defined.

Read the author agreement first

Look for clauses covering generative tools, translation, rewriting, disclosure, warranties, and the publisher’s right to request supporting material. Record the exact version and date of the policy. Do not assume a house rule applies to every publisher or platform.

Separate platform rules from editorial standards

Amazon KDP distinguishes AI-generated content from content created by a person and then edited, refined, or checked with AI. Under KDP’s stated rule, AI-generated text remains AI-generated after substantial editing and must be disclosed; human-created text that receives AI assistance for editing or refinement is treated as AI-assisted and does not require that disclosure. Verify the live rule before submitting, because platform policies can change (KDP content guidelines).

The University of Chicago Press’s book-author guidance, revised October 21, 2026, takes a different approach: it prohibits AI for core writing or rewriting and asks authors to disclose generative-AI assistance to an acquisitions editor. That is the Press’s policy, not a universal publishing standard.

How should you protect an unpublished manuscript before checking it?

Preserve the original file and establish permission before sending any text to a third-party service. An unpublished novel, memoir, or scholarly book can contain confidential material, personal data, contractually restricted content, or information that should not be retained or used for model training.

  • Keep the submitted file unchanged and make a working copy for analysis.
  • Remove unnecessary names, addresses, email messages, medical details, and other personal data from any excerpt.
  • Read the detector’s current terms for retention, training use, deletion, account access, geographic processing, and human review.
  • Obtain the author’s permission when you are not the rights holder or when the agreement requires consent for external processing.
  • Record the service name, report date, model or product version, and the exact file or passage uploaded.

The Authors Guild specifically raises permission, retention, and training concerns when a publisher considers uploading someone else’s unpublished manuscript to a detector (Authors Guild best practices). If those terms are unclear, do not upload the manuscript; use local editorial review and provenance material instead.

What is the step-by-step way to review a manuscript?

Use the following sequence so that a detector, if allowed at all, comes after policy and provenance review rather than replacing them.

  1. Define the decision and scope. Write one sentence stating what you must decide, such as “Does this submission comply with the signed disclosure clause?” Identify the edition, language, genre, and passages in scope.
  2. Preserve the submission. Hashing or otherwise securely archiving the original can help demonstrate that the reviewed file was not altered. Keep a separate copy for annotations and excerpts.
  3. Collect provenance with consent. Ask for dated drafts, tracked changes, research notes, outlines, source files, editorial correspondence, or a disclosure statement that the contract permits you to request. The absence of a particular platform history is not evidence of AI use.
  4. Inspect available document history. In Google Docs, open the document and choose File > Version history > See version history. Google says viewing earlier versions requires editing permission; history records document changes, not universal proof of who originated every sentence (Google Docs version history help).
  5. Read the manuscript in context. Mark concrete craft or fact questions: an abrupt continuity break, a quotation that cannot be verified, a citation that does not support the claim, or a passage whose voice changes sharply. These are reasons to ask for clarification, not validated AI fingerprints.
  6. Verify external claims. Check quotations against the purported original, confirm page numbers and names, and test links or references. A fabricated citation is an editorial and fact-checking problem regardless of how it was produced.
  7. Check detector eligibility before uploading. Confirm language, file type, word range, genre coverage, privacy terms, and whether flagged passages can be reviewed. Do not submit a whole book merely because the service accepts a file.
  8. Run only the permitted passage or file. Save the report unchanged. Note the exact text, eligible word count, model or report date, and any warning the service displays.
  9. Compare evidence rather than averaging scores. Put the report beside drafts, disclosures, editorial notes, and the applicable policy. Different detectors may disagree; combining percentages does not create a more accurate result.
  10. Discuss the specific passage with the author. Ask how it was drafted, translated, researched, or edited. Give the author a meaningful chance to explain before deciding on a contractual response.
  11. Document the outcome and uncertainty. Record what was established, what remains unresolved, the policy applied, the author’s response, and any agreed revision or disclosure. Restrict access to the report and avoid public accusations.

What are Turnitin’s documented limits for long-form prose?

Turnitin’s AI Writing Report illustrates why a book should not be reduced to one number. Its documented report accepts .docx, .pdf, .txt, and .rtf files under 100 MB, but it evaluates 300 to 30,000 words of qualifying long-form prose per report. Poetry, scripts, code, and some unconventional formats are not reliably detected. Its English model changed on October 14, 2026, and earlier reports are not updated retroactively. Results below 20% are suppressed numerically to reduce false-positive misinterpretation. These specifications apply to Turnitin’s education-oriented workflow, not to every detector or to every individual book author.

Check before interpreting a report Why it matters
Eligible word count A novel may exceed the report’s 30,000-word maximum; separate excerpts are not a single whole-book verdict.
Genre and format Poetry, scripts, code, and unconventional layouts may fall outside reliable detection.
Language and model date Results depend on the supported language and the model version used; updates can change interpretation.
File type and size A file can be accepted while portions of its content remain ineligible for analysis.
Passage-level review The report should identify text that a human can examine, not just display a manuscript-wide percentage.

How reliable are detector scores on human-written text?

Evidence about false flags is more useful than a claimed universal accuracy ranking, but it must be read in context. In a limited 2026 Authors Guild comparison, five detectors were run on ten articles published in 2022 or earlier—material deliberately selected as human-authored. Sidekicker.ai flagged all ten at 71%–100% AI-written; Pangram reported zero across the ten; Originality.ai reported zero on eight and 1% on two (Authors Guild comparison). This small sample does not establish which detector identifies AI-written book prose best, and it is not a matched benchmark of complete manuscripts.

The result does establish a practical warning: the same human-authored material can receive sharply different scores. Plain, second-language, formulaic, or genre-conventional prose may be especially vulnerable to mistaken flags, so a high score should trigger a conversation and closer reading—not a finding of breach.

What should you do when a passage is flagged?

Pause the decision and move from a score to an evidence review. A fair response is specific, private, and tied to the governing policy.

1. Confirm that the passage was eligible

Check the language, length, genre, file extraction, and report date. Re-run only if the service’s documentation says a repeat is meaningful; repeatedly scanning the same text until a preferred percentage appears is not a sound method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Examine the passage’s editorial context

Compare the flagged text with nearby chapters, earlier drafts, tracked changes, notes, and source material. Investigate unsupported claims, invented quotations, continuity errors, or unexplained shifts in terminology. Do not treat polished prose, em dashes, headings, or a particular “AI-like” tone as proof.

3. Ask neutral questions

Show the author the exact passage and explain the policy question. Ask whether a translation, grammar tool, generative rewrite, collaborator, or dictated draft was involved. Keep the conversation focused on disclosure and contractual requirements rather than demanding that the author prove a negative.

4. Choose a proportionate remedy

Possible outcomes include no action, a factual correction, a disclosure addendum, a request for a replacement passage, or escalation under the contract’s review procedure. Do not publicly accuse an author on the basis of a detector result, and do not present a score as proof to an agent, retailer, or reader.

How do KDP, publishers, copyright registration, and certifications differ?

These systems answer different questions. A detector estimate is not a disclosure rule, a copyright determination, or an attestation program.

How should fiction and nonfiction be reviewed differently?

Fiction

Read for character continuity, chronology, point of view, setting details, repeated imagery, and dialogue that conflicts with established facts. A sudden voice change may justify an editorial query, but genre conventions and deliberate experimentation can also create abrupt shifts. Verify names, quotations, historical details, and permissions separately from any AI question. A human editing reference such as The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction can help with craft review; it is not a detector.

Nonfiction

Prioritize source verification: quotations, statistics, citations, dates, scientific claims, legal descriptions, and references that appear unusually generic or cannot be located. A fact-checking reference such as The Chicago Guide to Fact-Checking, Second Edition is designed for checking claims, not identifying AI authorship. Keep fact-check findings separate from any disclosure decision.

What records should an editor keep?

A concise evidence log makes a later discussion fairer and prevents a volatile score from becoming an undocumented accusation.

  • Applicable contract or policy, including its version and effective date.
  • Original submission filename, date received, and a protected copy.
  • Author permission and the detector’s privacy and retention terms.
  • Tool name, report date, model version if shown, language, file type, eligible word count, and exact passage.
  • Drafts, version-history excerpts, correspondence, and source checks actually reviewed.
  • The author’s explanation, the decision made, and any agreed correction or disclosure.
  • A clear note distinguishing established facts from unresolved uncertainty.

Which common mistakes make a manuscript check unfair?

  • Using a detector before reading the policy. The same AI-assisted act can be allowed by one platform and prohibited by a publisher.
  • Scanning an entire book and quoting one percentage. Word limits, ineligible formats, and chapter-to-chapter variation make that summary misleading.
  • Treating a low score as proof of human authorship. A detector can miss AI-generated text.
  • Treating a high score as proof of AI authorship. False positives are documented, and published human writing has received high scores.
  • Uploading confidential text without permission. Retention and training terms can create a separate rights and privacy problem.
  • Confusing craft clues with validated fingerprints. Stiff prose, generic transitions, or a sudden tone change are prompts for questions, not forensic proof.
  • Repeating scans until the number changes. Score shopping undermines a documented process.
  • Publishing an accusation. Keep unresolved suspicion private and follow the contract’s review and appeal procedure.

What is the most defensible conclusion?

For a book manuscript, the defensible conclusion is usually about compliance and evidence, not a binary label. State which policy was applied, what provenance and editorial checks showed, whether a permitted detector was used within its limits, what the author explained, and what remains uncertain. If the evidence cannot establish AI use, say so plainly and resolve the editorial question without claiming that the manuscript has been “certified human” or “proven AI.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I prove that a manuscript was written by a human?

No available detector can certify human authorship. Drafts, version history, notes, and a consistent author explanation can document provenance, but they still do not prove who originated every sentence.

Should I run every chapter through several AI detectors?

Not automatically. Multiple services can disagree, and repeated uploads may create additional privacy and retention risks; use a detector only when the governing policy permits it and its scope is documented.

Does editing AI text make it human-written for copyright purposes?

Editing may add copyrightable human contribution, but it does not automatically erase AI-generated material. The U.S. Copyright Office asks applicants to identify human authorship and exclude AI-generated material that is more than de minimis; a qualified lawyer should address a specific case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the author refuses to provide drafts or history?

A missing history is not proof of AI use. Apply the contract’s disclosure and cooperation clauses, rely on the manuscript and verifiable sources, and document the refusal and the limits it places on your decision.

Can a publisher share a detector report with the public?

Sharing an unverified score can expose confidential material and unfairly imply misconduct. Keep reports restricted, use the publisher’s review or appeal process, and make any public statement only after a documented decision supported by the applicable policy.
