E-book sync uses an account and an online service to make reading progress and, depending on the platform, bookmarks, highlights, and notes available on your other supported devices. Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo each document this within their own ecosystems; their help pages do not promise automatic syncing between one another.

What actually syncs—and what each item means

A reading app or device tracks where you are in a book and any marks you add. When the service syncs, it makes the saved state available to compatible devices signed in to the same account. The exact items differ by platform.

  • Reading position is where you can resume. The interface may show a page, location, or progress marker. A displayed ebook page is not necessarily a stable coordinate: Kindle notes that ebook page numbers do not always match print editions, and reflowable text changes with screen and font settings. Treat the page number as a reading aid, not a universal locator. Amazon explains Kindle ebook page numbers.
  • Bookmark is a marker you save so you can return to a location. It is distinct from the automatic point used to resume reading.
  • Highlight marks a passage; a note may be attached to it. Services may group bookmarks, highlights, and notes as annotations, but that does not mean they store or export them identically.

Vendors document the visible behavior, not every technical detail behind it. Their cited guidance does not explain private storage formats, exact sync protocols, or how simultaneous offline changes are resolved.

What Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo sync

Platform Documented sync coverage Requirements and limits
Kindle Reading position, notes, and highlights can be saved to Amazon’s servers and shared across Kindle apps and devices linked to the account. Kindle e-readers can also back up the furthest page read. Amazon Kindle Support; Amazon Kindle Support. Internet access is required. Sync is enabled by default according to Amazon’s help page, but it can be turned off. With it off, cross-device position sharing is unavailable; Amazon warns that marks created during that interval may be lost when sync is re-enabled. Handwritten annotations have narrower availability than text annotations: Amazon says they are accessible only across Kindle Scribe devices. Amazon Kindle Support.
Apple Books Apple lists reading position, bookmarks, notes, and highlights among the items that can sync across Apple devices. Apple Support: Use iCloud with Books; Apple iPhone User Guide. Use the same Apple Account on the devices and enable Books in iCloud or iCloud Drive as applicable to the device. Apple Books is not available in every country or region. The cited guidance covers Apple devices, not cross-vendor readers. Apple Support.
Kobo Kobo says eReader sync updates bookmarks and annotations; its Web Reader guidance also describes syncing progress and annotations. Kobo eReader sync help; Kobo Web Reader help. The eReader sync procedure requires Wi-Fi. Annotation export is limited: markup export is unsupported, eligibility can depend on the book and author approval, and generated export files are retained for 30 days. Kobo help.

Sync within one account ecosystem is not the same as transferring state between Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo. The cited platform instructions do not say that a highlight or current position in one service will automatically appear in another.

What has to be in place for sync to work

  • A connection: Kindle requires internet access, and Kobo’s eReader sync instructions use Wi-Fi. Apple’s iCloud sync likewise requires the relevant iCloud setup.
  • The same account: Both devices need to be linked to the appropriate platform account. Apple explicitly requires the same Apple Account.
  • Sync enabled: A disabled setting can prevent updates from reaching other devices. Kindle specifically warns about annotations made while its sync is off.
  • A supported device and item: Sync coverage can differ by annotation type, as with Kindle Scribe handwriting, and platform guidance does not establish universal format-by-format compatibility.

How to troubleshoot missing progress or annotations

  1. Check connectivity. Connect the Kindle to the internet or the Kobo eReader to Wi-Fi. Amazon Kindle sync guidance; Kobo sync guidance.
  2. Confirm the account. Check that both devices use the same service account. For Apple Books, verify the same Apple Account is signed in.
  3. Check the sync setting. On Kindle, confirm Sync is enabled in the app or device settings. On Apple devices, confirm Books is enabled in iCloud.
  4. Run a manual sync. Kindle and Kobo document manual sync actions. Amazon recommends syncing the app or Kindle after checking the connection. Amazon troubleshooting guidance; Kobo sync guidance.
  5. For a Kindle Assistive Reader issue, Amazon’s specific troubleshooting advice is to open the book on the device where it was last read, confirm internet access, manually sync to the furthest page, and then retry. This is guidance for that Kindle/Alexa case, not a guaranteed recovery method for all sync problems. Amazon Assistive Reader troubleshooting.
  6. If Kindle Sync had been off, pause before adding more marks. Amazon warns that annotations created while it was disabled may be lost when it is switched back on. The cited Apple and Kobo guidance does not establish the same recovery risk or guarantee.

Can you move annotations between ebook apps?

Not automatically just because a book is an EPUB. The W3C’s EPUB Annotations 1.0 Working Draft, dated 20 September 2026, proposes an interchange format for notes, highlights, and bookmarks. It explicitly does not define how reading systems create, store, or synchronize annotations. It is a draft, not evidence that today’s reader apps exchange marks across brands.

Kobo documents an export route for eligible books: annotations can be exported as PDF, HTML, TXT, or Markdown. Markup export is not supported; availability depends on the book and author approval, and Kobo says generated export files remain available for 30 days. Kobo also documents using Readwise to view and manage Kobo annotations and export them to other services. These are specific Kobo workflows, not a universal ebook standard.
