Search can find images by details such as date, place, people, pets, text, or captions; albums and folders give you lasting groups, while filters narrow what you see. On iPhone, search is the quickest route to a particular item. On Mac, Photos also documents richer metadata, keyword, rating, and duplicate-management tools.
Feature names and availability can vary by software version. Apple’s iPhone guide describes Apple Intelligence search for iOS 27 or later, and its Mac Photos User Guide identifies macOS 27. Check the controls and eligibility shown on your own device.
How Apple Photos search works
Photos search is not limited to filenames or albums you made. On iPhone, Apple lists dates, places, businesses, categories, events, named people and pets, text found in images, and captions as searchable examples. Search is useful for one-off retrieval; albums are better when you want to keep a group together.
Search on iPhone
- Open Photos and tap Search.
- Enter a useful detail. Try a month or year, city or state, business name, category, event, person or pet name, or text such as an email address or phone number. Captions can also be searched.
- Review and refine the results. Swipe up to see complete results. A media-type term such as “Video” or “Portrait” can narrow a query. Where available, filters such as Favorites or Edited can further narrow results; sorting can show items by date added or date captured.
Search can be used from Library, Collections, and within an album or collection. For an iCloud Shared Photo Library, Apple also documents searching “Shared by” and selecting a participant.

Search with Apple Intelligence
In Apple’s documented supported configuration, Apple Intelligence lets you describe a specific image in natural language and search video clips for key moments. This is not a universal Photos capability: Apple lists iOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Availability varies by language and region, and usage limits may apply. If the option is absent, use standard search or check Apple’s current eligibility information for your device and region.
Automatic discovery or labels you add?
Automatic discovery is useful when you remember what is in an image but have not organized it. Photos can surface items using recognized people and pets, dates, places, media types, and other visual or textual clues. User-added labels—especially captions, titles, and Mac keywords—provide context you choose and can make later retrieval more precise.

| Approach | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic search and recognition | Finding something from a remembered date, location, subject, or visible text | Search across details Photos recognizes or indexes; results depend on what is present and processed in the library. |
| Albums and folders | Keeping a durable, named group together | You add items to albums and arrange albums in folders; this does not require moving the originals out of the library. |
| Captions, titles, and keywords | Adding specific context that automatic recognition may not infer | Add descriptive information to items; captions and titles are searchable, and Mac filters can use keywords. |
| Filters | Narrowing a broad view by type or other conditions | On Mac, combine filters such as item type, keyword, and star rating to reduce the displayed set. |
How People & Pets works—and why a pet may be missing
Photos groups recognized people, dogs, and cats in People & Pets. If no pets appear, the collection may be labeled People. Naming a person or pet in a photo adds that identity to the collection and applies the name to other photos and videos of them in the library. You can correct mistaken identifications, mark favorites, and hide or stop featuring a person or pet. With iCloud Photos, Apple says this collection stays up to date across devices.
Give recognition time to finish
A missing pet collection does not by itself mean anything is wrong. Apple says Photos needs time to index the library and detect pets. On iPhone or iPad, the device needs to be locked and connected to power while detection runs; on Mac, detection can happen while Photos is not in use. Depending on library size and background activity, this can take up to a few days. During that work, the collection may still be called People.

Create albums and folders on iPhone
- Open Photos and go to Collections > Albums.
- Create an album. Name it, add the photos you want, and choose a key photo.
- Maintain the structure. Albums can be renamed and reordered, and albums can be placed in folders.
With iCloud Photos, albums are stored in iCloud and are available on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleting an album removes that grouping, not the photos from your library or from other albums that contain them.
Add searchable context and filter on Mac
On Mac, the Info view lets you add or edit titles and captions; Apple says these can make items easier to search. Photos also supports editing metadata such as an item’s date, time, and location. Add a caption when the detail you will remember is not obvious from the picture—for example, the occasion or the names of people who are not recognized.

Use filters to narrow a view
Mac filters can show categories such as Favorites, Edited, Photos, Videos, Screenshots, or Not in an Album. You can also filter by keyword and star rating, and select multiple conditions. Filters are useful for broad narrowing; a search with a specific caption or keyword is more targeted. These controls are documented for Mac and should not be assumed to appear identically on iPhone.

On Mac, open Utilities > Duplicates to review items Photos has identified as duplicates and merge them. The analysis may take time to populate, particularly for a large library. This documented workflow is for Mac; do not assume the same location or behavior on every platform.

Choose the right tool for the job
- Remember a subject, place, or date? Start with Search; it is designed to find items without requiring you to have filed them in advance.
- Want a collection you can return to? Create an album, and use folders when you need to group albums.
- Need better precision for a recurring project or occasion? Add captions, titles, or keywords rather than relying only on automatic recognition.
- Want to reduce a large set by type or rating? Use Mac filters where available.
- Looking for natural-language image or video search? Check Apple Intelligence device, operating-system, language, and region requirements; standard search remains a separate option.
