Apple Home supports Matter accessories through the Home app, but Matter and Thread do different jobs. Matter is the smart-home interoperability standard; Thread is one network a Matter device can use. A Matter device using Wi-Fi does not need Thread. A Matter-over-Thread device does need access to a compatible Thread network, and hub-backed features such as automations, notifications, and remote control have additional requirements.

How do Matter and Thread work with Apple Home?

Matter provides a common way for supported smart-home accessories to communicate with ecosystems such as Apple Home. Thread is a low-power IP mesh network that some accessories use to connect. A Thread border router routes traffic between that mesh and the home’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet network; it is a networking role, not another name for Matter. Apple describes these roles in its Matter support documentation and ThreadNetwork documentation.

In practice, check the accessory’s transport. If it is Matter over Wi-Fi, it uses Wi-Fi and does not require Thread infrastructure. If it is Matter over Thread, it needs a compatible Thread network. A compatible Apple device can provide Thread border-router functionality, and Apple also recognizes compatible third-party Thread border routers.

After setup, supported accessory functions can appear in the Home app and may be available through Siri, Control Center, and compatible third-party HomeKit apps. The Matter label does not mean every optional feature will work in every ecosystem: the product’s implemented functions and software determine what Apple Home can expose.

It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Do you need a HomePod or Apple TV for Matter?

Not always. Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a home hub. That local phone-based use is different from having a home hub available to provide functions such as automations, notifications, and remote control. Apple’s Matter accessory guidance and Thread network guidance describe these distinctions.

For a Thread accessory, the iPhone’s local pairing and management path is not a substitute for a persistent Thread network and home-hub features. Apple’s Thread guidance calls for a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible third-party Thread border router for automations, notifications, and remote control. Apple’s general home hub setup guide also describes away-from-home control, shared accessory control, and automations as hub functions.

Which Apple devices support Thread?

Apple’s Thread troubleshooting guidance names these Thread-enabled devices. Model generation and connectivity variant matter, so do not assume every Apple TV or HomePod has Thread.

Device Thread detail
HomePod mini Thread-enabled
HomePod (2nd generation) Thread-enabled
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) Thread-enabled
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), Wi-Fi + Ethernet Thread-enabled; confirm the Ethernet variant
iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or later running iOS 18 Apple lists supported models for local pairing and management; they are not permanent home hubs

Apple’s Thread alert and troubleshooting list identifies the supported hardware. Its Works with Apple Home guidance also warns that some older Apple TV and HomePod variants require a compatible Thread border router. Before troubleshooting or buying hardware, verify the exact model, Apple TV connectivity variant, operating system, and accessory firmware.

How do you add a Matter accessory to Apple Home?

Add a new accessory

  1. Power the accessory and follow its manufacturer’s preparation instructions.
  2. On your iPhone, open the Home app and choose Add Accessory.
  3. Scan the Matter setup code, then follow the on-screen pairing steps. If scanning is unavailable, use the pairing option shown in Home.
  4. Authorize the setup when prompted. Apple’s system handles Matter commissioning and supplies the appropriate Wi-Fi or Thread network credentials for the selected accessory.

Apple’s Home setup instructions for iPhone cover the pairing flow. An app that wants to add or access Matter accessories must obtain the user’s permission, as described in Apple’s Matter developer documentation.

Add an accessory already paired to another Matter app

Matter can allow a compatible accessory to be shared with another ecosystem without removing its existing pairing. In Home, choose Add Accessory, then More options, and select the previously paired Matter accessory. You may need to generate a pairing code in the accessory’s original app before continuing.

Apple says Matter pairings sync through iCloud Keychain. You can review them on iPhone under Settings > General > Matter Accessories. The multi-app pairing flow and settings location are described in Apple’s Matter accessory guidance.

What should you check before choosing a Matter device?

  • Certification and category: Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance lists air purifiers, blinds and shades, bridges, fans, lights, locks, outlets, robot vacuums, sensors (air quality, ambient light, contact, humidity, motion, and temperature), switches, and thermostats. Apple says badge use requires CSA Matter certification in a category Apple Home supports and interoperability testing; the badge is not a guarantee that every feature works identically across ecosystems. See Apple’s badge guidance.
  • Transport: Confirm whether the product uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. Thread products need access to a compatible Thread network.
  • Apple Home functions: Check the manufacturer’s listing and instructions for the exact controls and features exposed in Apple Home, rather than relying on the Matter logo alone.
  • Apple hardware and software: Confirm required iOS or other Apple software versions, the exact hub model and variant if needed, and whether the setup requires a third-party border router.
  • Pairing state: Decide whether you are adding a new accessory or sharing one already paired in another Matter app; the latter may require a code from that app.

Apple says Matter support first arrived in iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9.1, tvOS 16.1, and HomePod software 16.1. Those are historical introduction versions, not a statement of current minimum requirements; follow the current accessory and Apple support instructions for setup. See Apple’s Matter platform support overview.
