Antivirus, Windows Security, and EDR are different layers, not interchangeable names. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the prevention engine built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows Security is the interface that lets you manage that engine and run on-demand or offline scans. EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) is an organization-wide service that continuously records endpoint activity, correlates events over time, supports threat hunting, and can contain an infected device.
A RAT (remote-access trojan) can be a recognizable malicious file, a script, a fileless sequence of actions, or abuse of legitimate remote-control software. Antivirus may block it before execution or stop suspicious behavior; an EDR is designed to reveal the complete chain and give an analyst response controls. No single scan or interface guarantees that every RAT will be found.
What is the difference between antivirus, Windows Security, and EDR?
Antivirus is a prevention and remediation component. Windows Security is the Windows user interface for security features, including Microsoft Defender Antivirus. EDR is a continuously managed detection-and-response capability intended to investigate activity across many devices and over time.
Antivirus: prevention at the file and process boundary
Microsoft Defender Antivirus combines signatures, cloud-delivered reputation, machine learning, heuristics, anomaly detection, and behavior-based blocking. Microsoft states that it “can block almost all malware at first sight, in milliseconds.” That is a Microsoft product statement, not an independently measured RAT-specific detection rate. The engine can identify a known RAT family, reject a suspicious download, or block behavior after a process starts, then quarantine or remediate the threat.

Windows Security: the control surface
The Windows Security app presents Defender settings and scan choices to a user. It can start Quick, Full, Custom, and Microsoft Defender Offline scans, display protection history, and expose settings such as real-time and cloud-delivered protection. It does not add the centralized investigation, historical hunting, or fleet-wide response workflow associated with an enterprise EDR deployment.
EDR: continuous visibility and response
Endpoint Detection and Response records what happens on an endpoint and helps an analyst connect related events. Defender for Endpoint, for example, provides centralized alerting, advanced hunting, investigation data, and actions such as isolating a device, stopping and quarantining a file, and collecting investigation information. Microsoft documents telemetry covering processes, network activity, kernel and memory-manager activity, logons, registry changes, and file-system changes, with six months of storage for this investigation data.
Can Windows Defender detect a RAT?
Yes. Microsoft Defender Antivirus can detect and block many RATs through reputation, signatures, machine-learning and heuristic detections, and behavior-based rules. Its success depends on the particular RAT, its configuration, whether it is recognized by cloud services, and whether it is disguised as legitimate software or uses a custom payload.
Recommended Free Tools
A RAT may be detected before it runs, while it launches, or when its activity becomes suspicious. A clean-looking executable can still trigger a behavior rule if it creates persistence, injects into another process, or makes other actions associated with malware. Conversely, an attacker who uses a legitimate remote-access tool or a novel payload may avoid a simple file-signature match. That is why a successful scan is evidence about the scan and its current configuration, not proof that no compromise exists.
How does EDR detect RAT activity that antivirus may miss?
EDR looks for a sequence of related events rather than only asking whether one file is malicious. This matters because a RAT can separate its components across processes, use a script or memory-resident code, and communicate through a tool that is normally allowed in an organization.

The behavior chain an EDR can correlate
MITRE ATT&CK technique T1219 describes how an adversary may use legitimate remote-access tools to establish an interactive command-and-control channel. A RAT-like chain can include:
- Execution of a remote-control agent or a script that launches one.
- Persistence through a service, scheduled mechanism, or autorun location.
- A long-lived outbound connection or tunnel to an external system.
- Interactive shell, file-manager, or other child processes created by the remote agent.
An antivirus engine might block one component or classify the executable as clean. An EDR can connect the parent and child processes, persistence change, logon context, network destination, and timing. An analyst can then search backward through the device’s telemetry, determine which other endpoints show the same pattern, and isolate the affected device.
Why legitimate remote software complicates detection
Remote-support and administration tools have legitimate uses, so a blanket rule that blocks every remote-control program would disrupt normal work. EDR teams generally create allowlists for documented tools and alert when those tools run from an unusual path, under an unexpected account, with new persistence, or with suspicious child processes and outbound connections. The goal is to distinguish approved remote assistance from an unauthorized interactive channel.
What can Windows Security scans do, and when should you use each one?
Windows Security offers several scan scopes. A Full or Defender Offline scan is more appropriate than a quick check when you suspect persistence or a hidden component.
- Open the scan controls. In Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then select Scan options.
- Choose the scope. Use Quick scan for a fast check of common locations, Full scan for a broader examination of local files, or Custom scan when you need to check a particular file or folder.
- Run Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence is suspected. Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and start it. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment, where the scan runs before the normal Windows session loads.
- Review the result. Return to Virus & threat protection and inspect Protection history for detections, quarantine actions, or required remediation. Record the detection name and path if an administrator or incident-response team needs to investigate.
Offline scanning changes the timing of the inspection: persistent malware has a harder time hiding when its usual Windows processes and startup environment are not running. It is still a Defender Antivirus scan, not an EDR investigation, and a clean result cannot rule out every custom or fileless technique.

What does an EDR deployment add beyond a Windows PC scan?
An EDR deployment changes both the time horizon and the response options. A consumer Windows setup usually emphasizes prevention, user notifications, and scans started on demand. An EDR service keeps telemetry available for investigation and gives authorized responders controls across enrolled endpoints.

Does the Defender Antivirus mode change RAT protection?
Yes. Defender Antivirus has active, passive, and disabled modes, and the mode determines which component performs prevention.
- Active mode: Defender Antivirus scans and remediates threats.
- Passive mode: On a device onboarded to Defender for Endpoint, Defender Antivirus scans and reports but does not remediate.
- Disabled mode: Defender Antivirus neither scans nor remediates.
Installing another real-time antivirus can change which product provides prevention. EDR telemetry and response may still be available, but that depends on the organization’s licensing and onboarding. Check the status shown in Windows Security and the organization’s endpoint policy rather than assuming that an EDR license means Defender Antivirus is actively blocking files.
How should a home user investigate a suspected RAT?
Start with prevention status and a scan, then escalate when the evidence or symptoms warrant specialist review.
- Confirm protection is on. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, verify that real-time protection and cloud-delivered protection are enabled unless an administrator intentionally manages them.
- Run a Full scan. Use Scan options and allow the scan to complete. Review every detection in Protection history, including whether an item was quarantined or requires action.
- Use Defender Offline for suspected persistence. Start the offline scan from the same scan-options page. Save any detection name and file path after Windows returns.
- Check for legitimate remote tools you do not recognize. An unknown remote-control agent, unexpected service or autorun entry, long-lived outbound connection, or shell launched by a remote process deserves investigation. Do not delete business-support software until its owner and purpose are confirmed.
- Escalate recurring or ambiguous findings. If detections return, scans are disabled, or a remote tool is actively controlling the device, involve your organization’s administrator or an incident-response professional. A local scan cannot provide the historical correlation an EDR investigation can.
How should an organization tune EDR detections for RATs?
Begin with an inventory of approved remote-support and administration tools, their publishers, installation paths, service names, and expected users. Then alert on deviations rather than simply banning the entire category.

- Long-lived outbound connections or tunnels that do not match the tool’s documented infrastructure.
- Remote agents spawning command shells, scripting engines, file managers, or credential-access utilities.
- Unexpected combinations of logon activity, registry changes, file-system changes, and network events on the same endpoint.
Use the EDR’s historical search to identify the first appearance of the tool, the account that launched it, related child processes, and other devices with the same indicators. When confidence is high, isolate the endpoint, stop or quarantine the file, and collect investigation data before remediation erases useful context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is EDR always better than antivirus for RAT detection?
“Better” depends on the question. Antivirus is essential for stopping a malicious file quickly and is available on individual Windows systems. EDR is stronger when you need to understand a multi-step intrusion, search earlier activity, compare many endpoints, or contain a device remotely.
EDR does not replace prevention: it relies on correct onboarding, telemetry, policies, alert review, and response authority. A poorly configured or unmonitored EDR deployment can leave alerts unanswered, while a well-maintained Defender Antivirus installation can block a known RAT immediately. Layered coverage is the practical answer: keep prevention enabled, use offline scans when persistence is suspected, and add EDR where investigation and coordinated response are required.
What detection limits should you expect?
There is no authoritative, directly comparable RAT detection percentage for consumer antivirus, Windows Security, and EDR. Results vary with the RAT family, configuration, cloud connectivity, local policies, available telemetry, and whether the attacker uses a custom payload or legitimate remote-access software.
Microsoft’s “almost all malware” wording should therefore not be read as a measured RAT benchmark. Likewise, an EDR alert is not proof that every RAT will be visible: if a device is not onboarded, telemetry is missing, or a tool is treated as approved without adequate controls, the investigation can have gaps. Treat every layer as risk reduction, not a guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Microsoft Defender Offline scan remove a RAT that is already running?
It can detect and remediate threats found during its preboot scan, but removal is not guaranteed for every RAT or persistence method. If the detection returns after reboot, preserve the detection details and have an administrator or incident-response specialist examine the device with broader telemetry.
What happens to RAT protection if I install another antivirus?
The other product may become the active real-time prevention engine, while Defender Antivirus moves to passive mode on an appropriately onboarded Defender for Endpoint device or is otherwise limited by policy. Verify the actual status in Windows Security instead of assuming both engines are actively remediating.
Can an EDR see a RAT that uses a legitimate remote-support application?
It can surface suspicious use by correlating launch context, persistence, network connections, and child processes, even when the executable itself is legitimate. Detection quality depends on onboarding, telemetry retention, and rules that distinguish approved support activity from unusual behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow long can Defender for Endpoint investigation data be searched?
Microsoft documents six months of storage for the investigation telemetry described for Defender for Endpoint. Organizations should confirm their own licensing, retention configuration, and any policy that changes the available history.
