An RP2040 can decode ADS-B messages, but it cannot receive aircraft signals directly from an antenna. A 1090 MHz receiver front end must filter and condition the radio signal first; the RP2040 then processes the resulting pulses. ADSBee is an open-source example of this embedded approach.
What the RP2040 does in an ADS-B receiver
ADS-B transmissions arrive over radio, while the RP2040 is a microcontroller—not a 1090 MHz radio receiver. Connecting an antenna to a Pico GPIO pin will not make a working receiver. The design needs RF and analog circuitry between the antenna and the microcontroller.
In the ADSBee architecture described by RTL-SDR.com in its January 15, 2026 coverage, the 1090 MHz signal passes through a SAW filter, a low-noise amplifier (LNA), a logarithmic power detector and a comparator. These stages filter and amplify the received signal, turn its pulse modulation into a usable baseband signal, and condition it for an RP2040 PIO input. The RP2040 performs the digital decoding.
How to approach an RP2040 ADS-B build
- Choose the target transmission system. The described pulse-detection path is for 1090 MHz ADS-B. Decide whether that is the band you need before choosing hardware.
- Provide a suitable antenna and RF front end. The antenna receives the signal; filtering, amplification, detection and comparator conditioning prepare it for the microcontroller. The antenna does not connect directly to RP2040 GPIO.
- Use an RP2040 board for the digital work. A Raspberry Pi Pico is one possible RP2040 board, but it is not a complete receiver. Raspberry Pi describes Pico as a microcontroller board that does not run Linux.
- Plan how decoded data will leave the device. The RP2040 handles decoding, but the board and surrounding hardware must also provide the output or network connection your project needs. Pico W adds wireless connectivity; the ADSBee stack described in the coverage uses an ESP32-S3 for Wi-Fi.
- Verify the design details before assembling. The project coverage and ADSBee repository describe the signal-chain blocks, but do not establish a universal parts list, build procedure, or independently measured range. Confirm component choices and wiring against the specific design documentation you intend to follow.
What changes if you also want 978 MHz UAT?
Do not assume that the 1090 MHz detector chain receives UAT simply by changing the antenna. The ADSBee architecture described in the project coverage uses a CC1312 sub-GHz transceiver for its separate 978 MHz UAT path, connected to the RP2040. That is a different receiving approach from the 1090 MHz pulse-detection chain.

RP2040 receiver or RTL-SDR?
A common alternative is an RTL-SDR USB receiver connected to a host computer and a 1090 MHz antenna. The architectural trade-offs are different; available descriptions do not establish that either approach has better sensitivity, range, decoding rate or reliability.

When this approach makes sense
- Choose an RP2040-based design if you want an embedded receiver and are prepared to work with a separate RF front end and the required data-output hardware.
- Consider an RTL-SDR arrangement if a USB receiver and host computer fit your setup better.
- Check the hardware path carefully if 978 MHz UAT is a requirement; it is not just the same 1090 MHz receiver with a different antenna.
ADSBee is an open-source example worth examining for its described architecture. RTL-SDR.com reported pre-made kits, but current availability, contents and pricing are not established here; verify those details with the seller before buying. The repository description is another source for the project’s RF signal-chain design.
