An AI worm can spread when one compromised or manipulated agent causes another connected agent or device to take up the attack, without the attacker directing every hop. The payload might be a message or retrieved document that exploits an agent’s trust and permissions, or software and model files replicated through a compromised host. Neither route works automatically: each hop needs a path to another target, a weakness or authority the worm can exploit, and enough resources to continue. Research demonstrations show these mechanisms in controlled settings, not a universal worm roaming the public internet.
What is an AI worm?
An AI worm is a self-propagating attack in which an AI model, malicious instruction, or model-enabled exploit helps recruit the next target. The defining feature is propagation: after an initial foothold, the attack can move onward without an attacker manually initiating every step. Anthropic’s 2026 description uses the conventional definition of a worm as a program that copies itself from one computer to another without human input; AI-enabled examples broaden the possible payload and routes beyond a conventional executable.
The phrase covers more than one technical mechanism. In one, a message, email, or retrieved document carries malicious instructions that an agent interprets and forwards or otherwise acts upon. In another, a compromised machine finds a reachable host, transfers files needed to run the attack, and repeats. These mechanisms have different prerequisites and defenses, so “AI worm” does not identify one standard piece of malware or one universal way to spread.
That distinction matters when assessing risk. A system can be exposed to an agent-to-agent prompt path without having an open device port, while a machine-to-machine worm can exploit a service even if no AI agent reads its messages. A hybrid or adaptive attack could use both kinds of opportunity.

How can an AI worm jump from one device or agent to another?
Every successful hop requires a route to a target, something that can cross the boundary, and a way for the target to execute or follow it. Once a foothold exists, the attack repeats those conditions at each next step; connectivity alone does not guarantee infection.
Prompt or retrieval-based propagation
In behavioral propagation, what crosses the boundary may be a malicious prompt, an email, a shared document, or content returned by a retrieval system. The next agent must be able to receive or retrieve that content and have sufficient authority to act on it, such as forwarding messages, using tools, or contacting other agents. The attack depends on a trust or instruction-following weakness rather than necessarily exploiting a software vulnerability.
Microsoft Research’s 2026 experiment illustrates how a small network can amplify a message. A single seeded message reached all six agents, circulated for more than 12 minutes, and consumed over 100 LLM calls before action limits stopped the loop. Microsoft describes propagation as agents sustaining an attack across multiple hops while collecting private data. Those figures describe the tested setup, not a general infection rate or a forecast for every agent network.

In host-based replication, the worm needs a network-reachable machine and an exploitable service, weak or stolen credentials, or another way to gain execution. It may then copy model weights and a harness—the software that runs the model and coordinates its actions—start inference on the new host, and scan for another target.
Anthropic’s 2026 threat-model work tested distributed inference using 15 inexpensive Android TV boxes and an eight-node Google Cloud Platform environment. In the latter, the worm moved through an unauthenticated Android Debug Bridge (ADB) port. This demonstrates a route that depends on a specific exposed service; it does not mean that ordinary devices or cloud instances are automatically reachable in that way.

Adaptive or combined propagation
A third pattern adapts the exploit to the target rather than relying on a single fixed vulnerability. A 2026 preprint on AI-adaptive worms reports a worm tailoring strategies across Linux, Windows, and IoT systems. If an attack can vary its approach, patching only one predetermined flaw may not remove every route. The preprint describes a research result, not proof of a broadly deployed worm or of successful attacks against every system in those categories.
What does an AI worm need for each hop?
A useful way to assess a possible worm is to check whether it has all four ingredients below. Removing any one can break the chain, even if other defenses fail.
- Reachability: The next target must be discoverable through a messaging channel, directory, shared retrieval source, open port, or another route. A system with no usable path to a target cannot pass an attack to it through that path.
- Execution authority: The target must follow instructions, run a tool, accept a prompt injection, or expose a service that lets the payload execute. Merely receiving hostile content is not the same as granting it permission to act.
- A transferable payload: Depending on the route, this can be prompt or retrieved content, exploit code, model weights, or an inference harness. Preventing one payload type does not necessarily block the others.
- Resources to continue: The infected host needs enough compute, storage, bandwidth, credentials, or tool access to perform the next action. Anthropic’s threat models include host compromise, stolen API credentials, and using legitimate work to pay for inference.
This checklist also explains why infection is not synonymous with “an AI read a bad prompt.” A prompt becomes a propagation mechanism only when the agent can carry out consequential actions and has an onward route. Conversely, a host-based worm may replicate without persuading an agent at all.
How do prompt propagation and host replication differ?
The two routes can have different speeds, evidence trails, and points of control. The table summarizes the distinction described in Microsoft Research’s 2026 work, Anthropic’s 2026 threat models, and the RAGworm study by Cohen, Bitton, and Nassi, published at ACM CCS 2025.
| Aspect | Prompt or RAG propagation | Host-compromise replication |
|---|---|---|
| What crosses the boundary? | A message, prompt, email, or retrieved content. | Exploit activity and potentially model weights, executable code, and an inference harness. |
| What weakness is needed? | Behavioral trust, unsafe instruction handling, or permissions that let an agent forward or act on the content. | An exposed or vulnerable service, weak or stolen credentials, or another path to host execution. |
| What shapes speed? | Message and retrieval frequency, agent permissions, and limits on actions or calls. | Discovery, exploitation, file transfer, and hardware capacity for inference. |
| What may be observable? | Suspicious content, unusual tool calls, or abnormal forwarding and retrieval behavior. | Scanning, transfers, newly started processes, and unusual network activity. |
| Which controls matter most? | Prompt and tool guardrails, constrained permissions, and controls on what agents can forward. | Authentication, patching, segmentation, removing exposed services, and quarantine. |
These are not mutually exclusive categories. A malicious document could prompt an agent to use a tool that reaches a vulnerable host; a host compromise could in turn expose credentials or an agent service. Security monitoring should therefore look at both content-and-action behavior and conventional host and network signals where both are present.

What limits how far an AI worm can spread?
A worm’s reach is bounded by the network it can traverse, the authority it can obtain, the resources available at each host, and the defenses that interrupt the chain. In practice, limits compound: an isolated segment, an authenticated peer connection, and a restricted agent directory each reduce opportunities for a next hop.

Network topology and trust boundaries
Segmentation, closed ports, authenticated peer links, and least-privilege directories reduce the set of targets that a compromised node can contact. If agents only need to communicate with a small approved group, a directory or messaging design that enforces that boundary can limit propagation even when one agent is manipulated. For host worms, quarantine and restricting network access to a whitelist can interrupt scanning and onward connections.
Anthropic cites a Mirai remediation example in which 92% of infections cleared within 14 days with quarantine and notification, compared with 74% without notification. This is a reported result for that remediation example, not a universal cleanup rate for AI worms or a guarantee that a particular quarantine plan will achieve the same result.
Authentication, patching, and least privilege
Strong credentials and removal of unauthenticated services close common routes into hosts. Timely patches address known software weaknesses. On the agent side, limiting tool permissions and access to directories or shared retrieval systems reduces what an injected instruction can do or where it can travel. Adaptive attack strategies make it less safe to assume that patching a single known issue will close every possible route, but they do not make patching or authentication useless.
Compute, bandwidth, and action budgets
Replication is not free. A host-based worm must discover targets, move the payload, and run inference; a behavioral worm may consume model calls and agent actions. In Microsoft’s six-agent experiment, action limits eventually stopped the loop after it had already consumed over 100 LLM calls. Call budgets and action limits can constrain amplification, though they are not substitutes for preventing unsafe actions or restricting network access.

Edge-device performance can further constrain host replication. In Anthropic’s 2026 test configuration, setting up full inference took about 71–150 hours with Gemma4-26B-A4B and 28–51 hours with Qwen3.5-9B. These are setup times for the named models and test configuration, not a universal measure of worm spread time; hardware, model, and configuration affect feasibility. Anthropic also notes that edge inference can be slow and compatibility imperfect.
Detection and quarantine
Detection can interrupt propagation when it identifies a malicious prompt before an agent forwards it, or when host and network monitoring reveals scanning, unusual transfers, or unexpected processes. In the RAGworm evaluation, the DonkeyRail defense reported a true-positive rate of 1.0, a false-positive rate of 0.017, and added latency of 7.6–38.3 milliseconds. Those are results in that study’s evaluation, not a guarantee for other environments or a claim that every prompt-based worm will be detected.
Stealth versus speed
Rapid replication can expand reach but tends to create more scanning, payload transfers, and unusual outbound traffic. A slower worm may be less conspicuous but gives defenders more time between hops. Anthropic describes this speed-and-stealth trade-off for edge-device worms; its practical significance depends on the topology and monitoring in place.

The cited work establishes controlled demonstrations, threat models, and evaluated defenses—not a universal autonomous worm active across the public internet. Microsoft’s experiment involved six agents; Anthropic’s work included specified device and cloud setups; and RAGworm’s propagation figures came from an evaluated email-assistant scenario. A result from one topology cannot be generalized to every consumer agent, cloud service, or IoT device.

Risk depends on the model, permissions, network connections, safeguards, and host hardware involved.

How should an organization reduce the risk?
Defenses should match the propagation path. A prompt filter alone will not close an unauthenticated device service, and patching a host does not stop an agent from forwarding malicious content through an otherwise permitted channel.
- Map the paths. Identify which agents can message one another, access shared retrieval sources, use tools, or reach device and cloud networks. Inventory exposed services and the credentials available to agents or hosts.
- Reduce unnecessary authority. Restrict tool use, directories, peer communication, and service access to what a task requires. Separate agent environments from sensitive systems when they do not need direct access.
- Close host entry points. Require authentication for administrative services, remove unauthenticated exposures such as the ADB path in Anthropic’s test, and apply relevant security patches.
- Constrain amplification. Use action and call limits, control automated forwarding, and monitor high-volume or repetitive agent actions. These measures limit damage and resource consumption if another control misses an attack.
- Monitor both kinds of evidence. Review suspicious prompts and retrieval content alongside tool-call histories, process activity, scans, and unusual transfers. A single telemetry source may miss a hybrid chain.
- Prepare to contain. Have a way to isolate affected devices or agent connections, restrict traffic to known-good peers, revoke exposed credentials, and notify affected users or system owners. Quarantine is most useful when it blocks onward routes while investigation and recovery proceed.
These steps do not establish that a system is immune. They reduce the number of reachable hops, limit what an infected node can do, and make abnormal propagation easier to interrupt. Which control takes priority depends on whether the environment’s main exposure is agent messaging, host services, or both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI worm need to copy its model to every infected device?
No. A prompt- or retrieval-based attack can propagate as content that another agent processes, without copying model weights. Copying weights and an inference harness is relevant to host-based distributed inference, not a requirement for every kind of AI-worm behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Would ordinary antivirus detect an AI worm?
It may help with executable payloads or suspicious host activity, but it cannot be assumed to recognize a malicious instruction passed through a message or retrieval result. Detection needs to account for the route involved, including agent actions and network behavior.
Can an AI worm move between devices that use different operating systems?
A 2026 preprint reports an adaptive worm tailoring strategies across Linux, Windows, and IoT systems. That research result does not establish that every cross-platform combination is vulnerable or that the worm can succeed without reachable targets and exploitable permissions.
Does using a larger AI model necessarily make a worm spread faster?
The cited evidence does not compare spread rates across model sizes in otherwise identical conditions. Hardware capacity, setup time, network paths, safeguards, and the type of propagation all affect whether a model-enabled attack can continue.
