AI search combines a conventional web-search pipeline with a language model. It first discovers and indexes eligible pages, interprets your natural-language request, retrieves passages that appear relevant, and then generates a synthesized response. In some products, a complex question is expanded into several related searches before retrieval. Citations are links to pages the system used or judged to support the answer, so they let you inspect the evidence—but they do not prove that every generated sentence is correct.
The exact sequence varies by product, account, language, region and whether live web search is enabled. Google documents retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), query fan-out and prominent links in its generative Search features; Microsoft describes related behavior for Bing and web-enabled Copilot. Those documented implementations explain the major building blocks without implying that every AI search service works identically.
What is AI search, in plain language?
AI search is a search experience that uses a generative language model to turn retrieved information into a conversational answer. Instead of returning only a ranked list of pages, it can combine information from several results, explain relationships, follow the context of a question and attach source links.

- Search and retrieval: web crawlers discover pages, an index stores processed content, and ranking systems select material for a particular query.
- Generation: a language model receives the selected material as context and writes a response in natural language, often with citations.
Keeping those parts separate explains both the usefulness and the limits of AI answers. A fluent response can only be as current and well-supported as the material retrieved for it, and a page that was never indexed cannot normally be selected as a web source.
Google says 15% of searches each day are searches it has not seen before. Google does not give a publication year for that statistic on the cited page, so it should not be treated as a fresh 2026 measurement. The figure illustrates why systems must interpret new combinations of words rather than rely only on prewritten answers.
Google’s explanation of its approach describes how search handles unfamiliar queries.
How does AI search find web pages before answering?
Before a model can cite a page, a search system generally has to discover it, process it and decide whether it belongs in the index. Google names these stages crawling, indexing and serving; Bing describes crawling, indexing and ranking. Encountering a URL does not guarantee that the page will be indexed or displayed.
1. Crawling discovers candidate URLs
Automated crawlers follow links and other discovery signals to request pages. They may revisit pages when content changes, but crawl frequency and coverage differ by site and by search engine. Access controls, server failures, duplicate URLs, blocked resources or a page’s technical configuration can prevent useful discovery.
2. Indexing processes what was found
The engine analyzes the page’s text, links, language, media and technical signals, then stores representations that can be searched. It may choose one URL as a canonical version among duplicates or omit material it considers inaccessible, low quality, redundant or otherwise ineligible. Indexing is a selection decision, not a complete copy of the public web.
3. Ranking selects material for a request
When a person asks a question, ranking systems estimate which indexed documents and passages are most useful. Relevance, quality, language, location, freshness and many other signals can affect the result. A page can be indexed yet fail to appear for a particular query because another page better matches the request.

What happens when I ask a natural-language question?
The system first interprets the request rather than treating every word as an isolated keyword. It identifies entities, intent, constraints, time references and conversational context, then creates one or more retrieval queries. A request such as “Which option is safer for a weed-filled lawn, and how do I prevent regrowth?” contains several intents—comparison, procedure and prevention—that may require different evidence.
Query rewriting and intent detection
A conversational question may be rewritten into search terms that are easier to match against indexed documents. The system can preserve important constraints such as a country, date, product model or professional audience. Follow-up questions may inherit context from earlier turns, although the exact memory and privacy behavior depends on the service.
Query fan-out for complex questions
Some generative search experiences split a complex request into related searches and run them concurrently. Google calls this query fan-out and documents it for AI Overviews and AI Mode. In Google’s lawn example, one question can fan out into searches about herbicide choices, non-chemical removal and prevention, then combine the findings.

Query fan-out can improve coverage when no single page answers every part of a question. It can also introduce inconsistency: different subqueries may retrieve sources with different dates, assumptions or quality levels. Do not assume that every AI search product uses Google’s exact fan-out method; the documented behavior applies to the Google features described in its guidance.
Google’s explanation of generative-search behavior is at Google’s AI features and Search guidance.
What is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and why does it matter?
Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, supplies externally retrieved information to a language model at answer time. NIST defines it as a system in which a model is paired with a separate information-retrieval system or knowledge base; the system identifies relevant information for a query and provides it to the model in context.
In practical terms, RAG lets a model use current or private material without retraining its underlying parameters for every new document. The model still contributes language understanding and composition, while the retrieval component contributes passages, documents or database records that anchor the response.

Web-based AI search is one application of this pattern: the search index acts as a large knowledge source, retrieval selects material, and generation turns that material into an answer. RAG does not make a model infallible. If retrieval misses a key page, returns irrelevant text or supplies conflicting claims, the generated answer can still be incomplete or wrong.
See the NIST RAG definition and Google Cloud’s overview of retrieval-augmented generation for the architectural distinction.
How does AI search turn retrieved passages into an answer?
After retrieval, the system assembles selected text and metadata into a prompt or context window for the language model. The model evaluates the material alongside its learned language capability, follows the user’s requested format and produces a synthesized response. It may quote, paraphrase, compare or explain rather than simply copy one result.

Grounding and synthesis
Grounding means that the answer is expected to rely on the retrieved context. Ranking and filtering may remove near-duplicates, prioritize authoritative pages or select passages that directly address separate parts of the question. The model then predicts a sequence of words that forms a coherent answer. This generation step is probabilistic, so two requests with similar wording can produce different phrasing or source selections.
Why a citation appears next to a sentence
A citation is normally attached when the system identifies a retrieved page as relevant support for a claim or paragraph. Google says its generative Search features show prominent, clickable links to relevant pages supporting the response. Bing says some answers summarize search results and link to sources, and that some answers may use generative AI.
The link is an inspection path, not a mathematical proof. A source can support one part of a sentence while leaving another part unsupported, or the model can overgeneralize what the page says. Open the linked page, check the date and scope, and compare important claims with additional primary sources.
How do AI search citations work in Google and Microsoft products?
Google and Microsoft document overlapping ideas—retrieval, summarization and links—but their interfaces, ranking systems and availability rules are not interchangeable.
| Comparison point | Google generative Search features | Bing and web-enabled Microsoft Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Web retrieval | Google describes generative features as using its Search index and reviewing retrieved information before generating a response. | Bing describes answers that summarize search results and link to sources. Microsoft says Copilot Chat and agents can send a short query to Bing when web search is enabled. |
| Question expansion | Google documents query fan-out: concurrent related queries can gather broader coverage for a complex question. | The cited Microsoft pages do not establish that Bing or Copilot uses Google’s exact fan-out process. |
| Source presentation | Prominent, clickable links are shown for relevant supporting pages. | Some answers include links to the sources used in the summary. |
| Availability | Feature availability can vary by location, language, account and product surface. | Web search, Copilot features and agent capabilities can depend on account, license, settings and whether web search is enabled. |

Can an AI search answer be wrong even when it has citations?
Yes. Citations improve transparency, but retrieval and citation do not guarantee factual accuracy. Google Cloud notes that irrelevant retrieved material can still lead to off-topic or incorrect output. Errors can arise at several points:
- Discovery or indexing gap: the best page was never available to the index.
- Ranking error: a less suitable page was selected over a stronger source.
- Context problem: a passage was retrieved without the qualifications surrounding it.
- Conflicting evidence: sources disagree on dates, definitions, measurements or regional rules.
- Generation error: the model misreads, combines or extends the retrieved material.
- Citation mismatch: a link is relevant to the topic but does not support every detail in the sentence.
For medical, legal, financial, safety or rapidly changing questions, use the answer as a starting point. Follow each citation, confirm the jurisdiction and date, and consult an appropriately qualified authority before acting.
How should I verify an AI search answer?
A short verification routine catches many citation and freshness problems without requiring specialist tools.
- Separate the claims. Rewrite a long sentence as individual factual statements. A single citation may not support all of them.
- Open the cited page. Read the surrounding section, not only the title or highlighted fragment.
- Check scope. Confirm country, edition, audience, date, measurement conditions and exceptions.
- Prefer primary evidence. For technical specifications, use the manufacturer or standards body; for policy, use the responsible government or institution.
- Look for disagreement. Search the disputed claim separately and compare independent authoritative sources.
- Repeat the question with constraints. Add a date, location or model number when the first answer is vague.
If the response gives no source for a consequential claim, treat that omission as a reason to investigate, not as evidence that the claim is true.
What determines whether a publisher’s page can be retrieved and cited?
There is no guaranteed route into an AI answer. A page generally needs to be discoverable, technically accessible, eligible for indexing and relevant to the user’s request. Google says its generative Search features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, so foundational SEO remains relevant.
Technical fundamentals
- Allow legitimate crawlers to fetch important pages and avoid accidental blocks.
- Use stable, indexable URLs, sensible internal links and a clear canonical strategy.
- Return usable status codes and keep essential text available without fragile rendering dependencies.
- Make language, location, dates, authorship and page purpose clear where they matter.
Content quality and usefulness
- Answer a specific user need with original, well-supported information.
- State qualifications, methods, limitations and update dates instead of hiding them.
- Organize long explanations with descriptive headings, lists and tables that make passages understandable when retrieved out of context.
- Remove duplicated, thin or misleading pages that compete with the page you want indexed.
Google’s guidance says no special schema markup is required solely for generative AI search. It also cautions against unnecessary content “chunking,” llms.txt files and inauthentic mentions as supposed shortcuts. Foundational SEO, clear technical structure and genuinely helpful content are the supported approach. Google points publishers to a Search Console Generative AI performance report where available, while warning that third-party tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems.
Read the full Google AI features and website guidance before changing a site solely for AI visibility.
What are the practical differences between traditional search and AI search?
Traditional search primarily asks you to inspect ranked results yourself. AI search adds interpretation and synthesis, which can reduce the time needed to combine several pages but adds a generation layer that must be checked.

| Main failure mode | Finding the right page can be slow or difficult. | A fluent answer can conceal missing, mismatched or incorrectly interpreted evidence. |
| Freshness | Depends on crawling, indexing and ranking of current pages. | Depends on whether live retrieval is enabled and which indexed material is selected. |
Does every AI chatbot perform web search?
No. A language model can answer from its trained parameters, a private knowledge base, live web retrieval or a combination of these. “AI” in a product name does not establish that the current web was searched.
Look for an explicit web-search setting, recognizable source links, a stated retrieval mode or product documentation. Microsoft specifically says Copilot Chat and agents can create a short query and send it to Bing when web search is enabled; without that setting, do not assume the response used live Bing results. Other services may use different indexes, licensed databases or no external retrieval at all.
What should readers remember about AI search?
AI search is best understood as search infrastructure plus retrieval-augmented generation. Crawling and indexing determine which pages are available; ranking and query interpretation determine what is selected; a language model turns the selected context into prose; citations provide a way to inspect the underlying pages.
That chain explains both the convenience and the responsibility. Use natural language to express the real task, add constraints when precision matters, inspect the links behind important claims and do not treat a polished answer as independent verification. For publishers, eligibility still begins with crawlability, indexing, relevance and useful content—not a special AI-only markup trick.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast does AI search update its knowledge?
There is no single update interval. Freshness depends on when a search engine crawls and reindexes a page, whether the product performs live retrieval, and which result it selects; a model’s built-in knowledge may be older than the linked web source.
Can I prevent a page from appearing in AI search citations?
Use the search engine’s documented crawling and indexing controls, such as access restrictions or page-level directives, and verify how they are honored by the relevant product. Blocking retrieval can also remove the page from ordinary search, so evaluate the visibility trade-off for each URL.
Why do two AI search tools give different answers to the same question?
They may use different indexes, ranking signals, query rewrites, retrieval times and language models. Account, location, language and enabled web-search features can also change the available sources and the final citation set.
