AI changes how a retro-game listing looks, but an attractive image is not proof that the pictured cartridge, disc, box, or manual exists in that condition. The key distinction is whether AI was used to create separate promotional artwork or to alter a sales photo of the physical item. Illustrative AI art can be disclosed and used as presentation; an AI-edited product image can hide damage, change labels, add components, or make a reproduction look genuine. For any purchase, judge the object from current, unedited photos and item-specific provenance, then apply the rules of the marketplace hosting the listing.
Available marketplace policies establish expectations for disclosure, accurate representation, and counterfeit prevention. They do not establish how common AI-generated retro-game listings are, or prove that AI has already changed prices, fraud rates, or collector confidence.
Why is the difference between AI artwork and an AI-altered listing photo important?
Because the two images make different claims. A promotional illustration says, in effect, “this is the kind of game or theme being presented.” A product photo says, “this is the physical item you will receive.” Confusing those claims is where a collector can overestimate condition or authenticity.

A seller might use a generated scene, character portrait, box-style mockup, or background to advertise a game-related service or a clearly identified art object. That image can be attractive without pretending to document a particular cartridge. The listing still needs to describe what is actually being sold, whether it is a physical collectible, a print, a digital file, or something else.

AI-edited product photography can change the deal
Editing a photo of a cartridge or boxed game can remove scratches, recolor a faded label, straighten a crushed box, add a seal, or substitute a cleaner-looking component. Even if the underlying item is genuine, the manipulated image can materially misrepresent its condition. If the image depicts an object the seller does not have, it can also create a false impression that the exact object is available.

How can I tell whether a retro-game listing photo is real?
Start by treating every polished image as presentation until the seller demonstrates that it shows the specific object in hand. Request fresh, unedited views and compare details across the listing rather than relying on a single hero image.
- Identify the image type. Look for wording such as “stock image,” “mockup,” “artist impression,” or “example.” If the seller does not say, ask directly whether each image shows the item being sold.
- Request current photographs. Ask for photographs taken for your inquiry, not only a catalog image. A simple request for the cartridge or box beside a handwritten note with the current date can help establish possession, although it is not authentication by itself.
- Cover every condition-critical surface. For a cartridge or disc, request front and back, edge or connector views, the label, screws or seams where visible, and any serial or mold markings. For a boxed game, request all box panels, corners, the spine, inserts, manual, seal, and any defects. Ask for the disc underside when the medium is optical.
- Check whether details remain consistent. Compare the logo shape, label alignment, rating mark, regional code, serial number, screw pattern, print texture, and included accessories in every image. A reflection, shadow, or background that changes unnaturally can indicate compositing, but visual suspicion is not conclusive.
- Ask what has been edited. Sellers should be able to say whether they cropped, adjusted brightness, removed a background, or used generative tools. Basic cropping is different from changing the item’s appearance; the important issue is whether the image still represents what will arrive.
- Match the image to the description. If the text says “box and manual included” but the photographs never show them, treat the claim as unverified. If the listing describes a graded copy, the certificate number and label should be visible and consistent.
- Save the evidence. Keep the listing URL, original images, messages, and any promised condition details until the transaction is complete. Screenshots are useful if the listing changes or a dispute arises.
No visual test can certify a cartridge or box. These checks are designed to reveal when the seller has not shown the object clearly enough for an informed decision.

What should I ask a seller to prove a retro game is authentic?
Ask for evidence tied to the individual item, not generic statements that the seller “knows games.” Documentation should connect the object, its history, and the physical details shown in the photographs.
Provenance and purchase records
Useful material can include an original invoice, a receipt from a prior purchase, an estate or collection record, or a transaction history that identifies the title and version. eBay’s counterfeit guidance names invoices and serial numbers as examples of documentation that may support a genuine-item claim. A receipt proves a transaction occurred; it does not automatically prove that the item has never been swapped, so compare it with the object’s markings.

Serial numbers, regional details, and grading records
Ask the seller to show any serial number, board or mold marking, regional code, and grading-company label that the listing relies on. A grading report can support condition or encapsulation claims when the report number matches the item. It is not a substitute for checking that the label, seal, and contents correspond to the described game.
Additional expert or archival material
eBay’s separate art guidance lists receipts, catalogs, appraisals, exhibition materials, and archive images or films as examples of authenticity evidence. That is art-listing guidance, not a retro-game authentication protocol. For a game, such material is best treated as supplementary context alongside item-specific photographs and provenance.

Questions that expose gaps
- When and where did you acquire this exact copy?
- Are all components shown included in the sale?
- Has the cartridge, disc, label, box, or seal been repaired, replaced, or reproduced?
- Can you photograph the item from an angle not already used in the listing?
- What is the return process if the item differs materially from the photographs?
A confident answer is not proof, but evasive answers, refusal to provide a fresh image, or a story that changes between messages are reasons to stop or lower your offer rather than fill the gap with assumptions.
What do Etsy and eBay rules say about AI images and counterfeit games?
Marketplace rules provide a baseline for seller conduct, not a universal guarantee. The governing policy depends on the platform, country, category, and date, so read the current rule for the listing you are considering.
Etsy: disclose seller-prompted AI and represent the item accurately
Etsy’s seller guidance says sellers must disclose seller-prompted AI creations. Its listing-image guidance states: “Listing images should accurately represent the items you’re selling so buyers know what to expect when they make a purchase.” The same guidance warns against using AI to make an item look better, higher quality, or materially different, and calls for an unedited photo of the actual item for most items. Applicability can depend on item type, so do not assume one image rule covers every vintage or handmade category.

Etsy’s seller policy also requires items to fit its made, designed, handpicked, or sourced categories. Disclosing AI use does not establish that a physical vintage game is genuine, permitted, or correctly described. A generated image can satisfy an artistic presentation purpose while the underlying collectible still requires real photographs and provenance.

eBay: counterfeit and unauthorized copies are prohibited
eBay’s counterfeit policy says, “Counterfeit or fake items aren’t allowed on eBay.” It also says, “You may list an item only if you’re certain it’s genuine and it complies with this policy and the Intellectual property policy.” The policy includes unauthorized copies, bootlegs, and self-made copies of games. A listing that uses an AI-cleaned image to make a reproduction look like an original can therefore raise both representation and counterfeit concerns.
Those are eBay rules; they should not be presented as identical to every marketplace’s policy or to the law in every jurisdiction. Buyers should use the platform’s reporting and return mechanisms when an item is materially different from its description, while recognizing that a policy violation still requires evidence and platform review.
How should I compare two retro-game listings that use polished artwork?
Use the same questions for each listing and give more weight to evidence than to visual quality. The following framework is a practical comparison tool, not a published rating system.

Can AI-generated art be used in a game listing?
It can be used for some purposes, but permission to use AI art is not permission to misrepresent a collectible. On Etsy, seller-prompted AI creations may be allowed when the seller discloses AI use and the item fits the site’s allowed categories. That disclosure concerns how the artwork was made; it does not verify a cartridge, box, manual, or claimed vintage origin.
For a physical game, keep promotional art visually and textually separate from product documentation. Label a generated image as an illustration, then show the actual item in unedited or minimally adjusted photographs. If the sale is for a print, poster, custom cover, or other art object rather than an original game release, state that plainly so a buyer cannot mistake the artwork for manufacturer packaging.
What is the safest buying process for an expensive or uncertain game?
Use a staged decision rather than paying first and investigating later.
- Define the claim. Write down whether you are buying an original release, a particular regional version, a complete-in-box set, a sealed copy, or merely game-themed artwork.
- Set an evidence threshold. Decide which photographs and documents are necessary before you will pay. For a high-value item, require views of every component that affects value.
- Ask questions inside the marketplace. Keep answers in the platform’s message system so the seller’s statements remain associated with the transaction.
- Check the return terms. Confirm the deadline, condition requirements, and who pays return shipping when the item is not as described. A return policy is recovery protection, not proof of authenticity.
- Use a qualified opinion when justified. For an unusually valuable or disputed item, an independent specialist or grading service may be worth the cost. Verify that the service actually covers the game, region, and type of claim; general art appraisal guidance does not automatically transfer to retro games.
- Record what arrives. Photograph the unopened package, then the item and all components. Compare them with the saved listing and messages before removing seals or altering the item.
What if the seller refuses to provide unedited photos?
Do not treat refusal as evidence that the item is fake, but treat it as a reason not to rely on the listing’s appearance. Ask once for a specific, reasonable set of views and a clear explanation of any editing. If the seller still refuses, choose a listing with better evidence or buy only at a price that reflects the unresolved risk—if the marketplace’s rules and your return rights make that risk acceptable at all.

Has AI already changed retro-game prices, fraud rates, or collector trust?
The available platform policies do not answer those market questions. They establish rules about disclosure, accurate images, counterfeit goods, and authenticity evidence, but they do not measure the prevalence of AI-generated retro-game listings or quantify effects on realized prices, fraud frequency, buyer confidence, or collector behavior.
That means a collector should not claim that AI has already inflated prices, increased counterfeits, or destroyed trust solely because a listing uses generated imagery. Separate presentation from proof. Then weigh provenance, serials, grading details, seller answers, and the marketplace’s current rules together. If the seller cannot connect the image to the object, the image should not influence your authenticity or condition decision.
