AI fact-checkers help identify and sort claims quickly, but the software alone does not establish whether a claim is true. Reliable verification still depends on defining exactly what is being asserted, tracing it to its original context, checking primary evidence, weighing evidence on both sides, and publishing a conclusion that readers can audit. Here is how that process works—and how to check an AI-generated answer or citation yourself.
What does an AI fact-checker actually do?
An AI fact-checker is best understood as part of a verification workflow, not as an automatic truth machine. Software can scan large volumes of material, flag statements that may be checkable, and help researchers find related claims or documents. People still need to decide what the claim means, whether it matters, what evidence is relevant, and what conclusion that evidence supports.
For example, Full Fact AI monitors online news, radio, social media, television, and YouTube. Full Fact describes using a claim-type classifier based on BERT fine-tuned on annotated data to identify potentially checkable statements. That kind of system helps narrow a flood of material to claims that may merit investigation; it does not, by itself, verify the facts in them.
AI can also help rank and cluster similar claims, transcribe recordings, retrieve material, and compare statements. These capabilities can speed up triage and research. But a result is only as dependable as the sources and context a person checks, and generated answers can sound certain while relying on a false premise.

How do fact-checkers decide what to check?
They first isolate the factual proposition that can be tested, then decide whether investigating it is worthwhile. A sentence may combine a verifiable detail with opinion or prediction; the check should address the testable part rather than treating the whole sentence as a single fact.
Separate fact from opinion or prediction
Potentially checkable claims include numbers, dates, definitions, quotations, and causal assertions. A value judgment is not normally settled by the same evidence, and a prediction concerns what may happen rather than what has already happened. Full Fact describes using a classifier to filter large volumes of material down to claims worth investigating, but selection and interpretation remain editorial tasks.
Consider reach, importance, and potential harm
Not every inaccurate statement can receive a full investigation. The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) says selection should be based primarily on a claim’s reach and importance. Parliamentary guidance also identifies potential harm and public interest as relevant considerations. Those principles help explain why a fact-checker may prioritize a widely circulated or consequential claim over a lesser-known error.
How is a claim traced to its original source and context?
Researchers try to locate the earliest available source for the statement and inspect the full document, recording, or other original material—not just a repost, excerpt, or AI summary. Context can change what a statement means: a number may be accurate but used to imply something the underlying data do not support.
A useful check asks what was said, by whom, when, and in what context. It also examines the assumptions beneath the claim. Full Fact says it checks not only evidence used in a claim but also the underlying assumption. That matters when a conclusion depends on an unstated definition, a comparison between unlike groups, or a causal explanation that the cited evidence does not establish.

When possible, the fact-checker contacts the person or organization that made the claim and asks for supporting evidence or a response. Full Fact and IFCN both describe this as part of their approach. A claimant’s reply can point researchers to relevant records or clarify what was meant; if there is no reply, the investigation need not stop.
What sources make a fact-check stronger?
For a central claim, the strongest starting point is usually direct evidence: official datasets, legal documents, original research, direct records, or information from named experts with relevant knowledge. Researchers should then corroborate important details independently where more than one relevant source exists.

Full Fact says it provides links to primary sources for factual assertions wherever possible and aims to use at least two sources to verify a check’s central claim unless only one relevant source exists. These are standards for traceability and corroboration, not a promise that every question has multiple independent records.
Secondary reporting can help locate evidence or explain a subject, but it is not a substitute for checking an available original record. A source’s name alone does not establish that it supports the claim: the relevant passage, number, definition, or conclusion must actually be present and must mean what the check says it means.
Questions to ask about each source
- Is this the original record or a report about it?
- Does it directly support the precise point being checked?
- Are its date, geography, definitions, and population relevant to the claim?
- Can another identifiable source independently confirm the central detail?
- Does the source disclose its methods, limitations, funding, or interests that could affect its accuracy?
How do fact-checkers weigh evidence for and against a claim?
A transparent check considers relevant evidence that supports the claim as well as evidence that undermines it. IFCN’s Code of Principles explicitly calls for presenting both sides of the evidentiary record. The goal is not to collect links that all point in one direction, but to assess what the available evidence can and cannot establish using consistent standards regardless of who made the claim.

That requires attention to definitions and measurement. A statistic can be accurately quoted yet misleading if it refers to a different year, country, or population than the claim suggests. A percentage can also be hard to interpret without its denominator. Researchers should check whether a source measures the same thing the claim describes and whether a cited correlation actually supports a causal assertion.

A check should disclose relevant information that could affect a source’s accuracy, and readers should be able to inspect methods and caveats rather than being asked to accept a verdict on authority alone. A claimant’s response belongs in that evidentiary picture, but it does not replace independent verification.
How can you check an AI answer and its citations?
Do not treat an AI-generated citation as evidence by itself. Open every cited source and confirm that the original material contains the specific number, quotation, date, or conclusion attributed to it.
- Write down the exact claim. Break a long answer into individual factual statements so each can be checked separately.
- Open the cited link. Find the relevant passage in the original document or recording. If the link leads only to a summary or a page that does not contain the attributed evidence, look for the underlying source.
- Check context and scope. Compare the answer’s date, geography, definitions, population, and denominator with the source. Confirm that a statistic has not been shifted from one year or group to another.
- Look for independent confirmation. Prefer primary records and independently named sources for key points. Two pages that repeat the same original claim do not necessarily provide independent corroboration.
- Read beyond the supporting sentence. Inspect the source’s methodology, limitations, funding, and correction policy, and look for evidence that could undermine the claim.
- Check accountability. See whether the published fact-check identifies where the claim came from, explains its methods, links its evidence, and gives readers a way to report an error.
A citation can be real but irrelevant, incomplete, or misrepresented. AI systems can also fabricate links, quotations, statistics, and studies. Treat polished wording as presentation, not proof; the decisive test is whether the cited original supports the statement in context.
How can you check whether an image is genuine?
Use reverse-image search to look for earlier appearances, then compare the earliest traceable posting with the context in which the image is now being shared. Check whether the date, location, and accompanying description are consistent with what can be established about the image.

Look closely for visual inconsistencies, but do not treat visual inspection or an AI-image detector as conclusive. AFP has warned that current AI-image detectors can be unreliable, so conventional verification remains necessary. A detector’s label is one signal to investigate, not a substitute for tracing an image’s history and context.
What do ClaimReview and other publishing standards add?
Publishing standards make a fact-check easier to trace and audit. Google’s ClaimReview guidance makes the importance of identifying a claim’s origin, methods, evidence, conclusion, links, and correction route explicit. Structured publishing can also make fact-check information machine-readable, helping systems identify existing checks rather than treating each claim as entirely new.
Machine-readable information does not guarantee that a check is correct. Readers still need to assess the cited sources and the reasoning. Its practical value is accountability: a check should expose enough of its work for others to inspect it, and it should offer a route to report a mistake.

There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every tool, topic, language, or new claim. A 2024 comparative study by Russell M. Hartley in the International Review of Information Ethics tested ClaimBuster, Full Fact, TheFactual, and Google Fact Check Explorer on 10 claims per tool. It reported 100% overall accurate readings and 89% unanimous determinations. The sample was small, and the author recommended further research, so those results should not be generalized to all fact-checking tasks.

When comparing tools, look beyond a single accuracy claim. Useful criteria include:
- Whether sources are named and linked directly, and whether the tool can access primary records.
- Which claim types and languages it supports.
- Whether human review or escalation is available.
- Whether it shows evidence for and against a claim, and provides a correction or audit trail.
- How broadly and quickly it monitors material, and how it handles privacy and data retention.
- Whether accuracy was evaluated on a representative test set reviewed independently, rather than a small or specially selected sample.
These criteria help distinguish a fast search or monitoring aid from a system that can support a well-documented conclusion. No interface, fluent explanation, or cited answer removes the need to verify the underlying evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if a fact-check gets something wrong?
Use the publication’s correction or contact route and point to the exact passage at issue, along with the original evidence that supports your correction. A check that makes its methods and sources traceable should give readers a way to flag errors.

Can AI fact-check a prediction?
A prediction is about a possible future outcome, so it cannot be verified in the same way as a date, quotation, or past event. A fact-check may still examine factual assumptions or evidence used to support the prediction.
Why do two fact-checkers reach different conclusions about the same claim?
They may be evaluating different versions or contexts of the claim, or have access to different relevant evidence. Compare their definitions, source material, methods, and treatment of evidence on both sides before deciding whether the disagreement is substantive.
Does an AI detector prove that an image was generated by AI?
No. AFP says current AI-image detectors can be unreliable. A detector result should not replace checking an image’s earliest traceable appearance and the context in which it is presented.
