AI data centers connect GPUs with a hierarchy of network fabrics rather than one universal network. Inside a server or rack, NVLink and NVSwitch provide scale-up communication. Between servers, an RDMA-based leaf-spine or fat-tree fabric—using InfiniBand or Ethernet with RoCE—moves gradients, activations and parameters among thousands of GPUs. Separate converged and out-of-band networks handle storage, provisioning, user access and device management.
This arrangement matters because distributed training is communication-heavy: when a collective operation is delayed by congestion, a large and expensive GPU fleet can sit idle. The fabric therefore functions as part of the computer, with topology, congestion control, routing, telemetry and failure recovery engineered around synchronized GPU traffic.
What is a network fabric in an AI data center?
A network fabric is the interconnected switching, link, adapter and software system that moves data between compute endpoints. In an AI cluster, it is designed for predictable bandwidth and latency under synchronized bursts, not just ordinary client-server traffic. A useful mental model has three coordinated communication domains.

NVLink and NVSwitch-style links connect accelerators within a node or a rack-scale system. NVIDIA describes NVLink as the scale-up layer. These links provide very high-bandwidth, tightly controlled accelerator-to-accelerator communication, allowing a group of GPUs to exchange tensors without sending every transfer through a conventional routed network.

GPU compute east-west fabric
East-west traffic travels between GPUs in different servers. An RDMA-capable leaf-spine or fat-tree network connects GPU network adapters, often called SuperNICs, to leaf switches and then to spine switches. NVIDIA’s NVL72 design uses rail-optimized wiring: the same GPU position across trays maps to corresponding leaves, with multiple compute planes for separate paths and resiliency.
North-south and management fabrics
North-south traffic enters or leaves the cluster. A separate converged network carries storage, provisioning, user access and in-band management. An out-of-band network isolates baseboard-management-controller (BMC) and device-management traffic from user workloads. Keeping these paths distinct prevents a storage scan, firmware operation or tenant burst from consuming bandwidth needed by GPU collectives.
How do GPUs exchange data during distributed training?
Distributed training divides a model across many GPUs, which repeatedly exchange intermediate and final results. The most common collective operations are all-reduce, all-gather and broadcast.
All-reduce
Each worker computes a gradient, then all workers combine their gradients and receive the same reduced result. This operation is repeated at every training step, so its effective bandwidth directly affects time spent waiting between computation phases.
All-gather
Every GPU contributes a shard of data and receives the complete assembled set. Large-model and mixture-of-experts techniques can generate substantial all-gather traffic when parameters or activations are partitioned across workers.
Broadcast
One endpoint sends identical data—such as initialized parameters or a control value—to many peers. Efficient trees, rings or hardware-assisted collective paths avoid sending the same payload redundantly through a bottleneck.

What RDMA changes
Remote direct memory access lets a network adapter place data directly into registered application memory. The CPU performs less copying and protocol work, and data can move from one GPU server’s memory space to another with lower software overhead. Cisco’s AI/ML networking diagrams show collective actions represented by RDMA_SEND and RDMA_WRITE over RoCE v2, with Ethernet, IP, UDP and InfiniBand-related headers, payload and integrity checks.

RDMA does not eliminate engineering requirements. Queue sizing, routing, congestion signaling, priority treatment, telemetry and recovery behavior still determine whether a fabric remains fast under synchronized bursts. NVIDIA reference architectures specify RDMA-capable fabrics for GPU compute and support RoCE on converged Ethernet designs.
How does scale-up connectivity with NVLink differ from the routed fabric?
Scale-up links are optimized for the small, tightly coupled domain around a server or rack; scale-out fabrics are optimized for reaching many independent nodes. The boundary determines when traffic leaves a specialized accelerator interconnect and enters a switch-based network.
- NVLink/NVSwitch domain: very high-bandwidth accelerator communication with a controlled topology and short paths.
- Routed GPU fabric: RDMA links, switches and routing that connect multiple servers and racks while providing path diversity and operational reach.
- Design decision: make the scale-up domain large enough for the model’s most frequent peer traffic, but do not assume that an internal link can replace a properly sized inter-rack fabric.
The practical question is not whether one technology is universally faster. It is how often the workload crosses the boundary, how much bandwidth each crossing needs, and whether the scale-out network can absorb simultaneous collectives without queueing.
How are GPU fabrics wired for predictable bandwidth and resiliency?
A leaf-spine or fat-tree topology gives a bounded number of switch hops and can scale by adding leaves and spines. A nonblocking design supplies enough uplink capacity that all connected endpoints can communicate at line rate during the intended traffic pattern. Deliberate oversubscription can reduce cost, but synchronized collectives make accidental oversubscription especially visible as queues and stalled GPUs.

Rail-optimized mapping
In the NVL72 logical architecture, each GPU position is mapped through its SuperNIC to a corresponding set of leaves. This rail-aware layout keeps traffic balanced across the fabric instead of concentrating one GPU’s flows on a single switch path.

Multiple compute planes
Two compute planes provide independent paths. NCCL and the ConnectX-8 SuperNIC balance traffic across active planes. If one plane fails, traffic continues on the other, with bandwidth reduced in proportion to the capacity that disappeared. This makes a plane, rather than one NIC-to-switch link, a manageable failure domain.
Documented NVL72 capacity figures
NVIDIA’s current NVL72 logical architecture documentation specifies the following per-service-unit connections and minimum bandwidths for its documented configuration:
| Connection or requirement | Documented value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GPU compute uplinks | 144 × 400 Gb/s | Per service unit in the NVL72 logical architecture |
| CPU uplinks | 36 × 400 Gb/s | Per service unit in the same architecture |
| Customer-network bandwidth | 25 Gb/s per GPU | Minimum in the documented configuration |
| Storage bandwidth | 12.5 Gb/s per GPU | Minimum in the documented configuration |
These figures describe one reference design, not a universal requirement for every AI cluster. Port count, optics, cable reach, breakout choices and switch capacity must be recalculated for the chosen GPU generation and workload.
What is the difference between InfiniBand, RoCE Ethernet and the emerging interconnects?
All of these choices can support distributed GPU workloads, but they differ in how much of the network is specialized, how they integrate with existing operations and where standards are still maturing.
| Technology or layer | Primary role | Strengths | Main design question |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVLink/NVSwitch | Scale-up inside a node or rack | Very high-bandwidth accelerator communication and tightly controlled topology | How large should the scale-up domain be before traffic crosses the routed fabric? |
| InfiniBand | Scale-out GPU compute | Purpose-built low-latency RDMA fabric and mature collective-communication tooling | Can the organization operate the specialized fabric and telemetry stack? |
| Ethernet with RoCE/Spectrum-X | Scale-out and converged services | Ethernet ecosystem, routability and the ability to combine compute, storage and tenant services with isolation | Are losslessness, congestion control and performance isolation engineered well enough? |
| UALink | Emerging open scale-up interconnect | Accelerator-to-switch load, store and atomic semantics with multi-vendor standardization goals | Which products and software ecosystems will reach production maturity? |
| Ultra Ethernet | Open Ethernet evolution for AI and HPC | Full-stack work across NICs, switches, optics, cables, congestion signaling and in-network collectives | Which specification revision and interoperable implementations are available at deployment time? |
NVIDIA’s current overview positions Spectrum-X for accelerated RoCE with deterministic latency and Quantum InfiniBand for low-latency AI training and HPC. The choice is therefore operational as well as technical: Ethernet may fit existing skills and cabling practices, while InfiniBand can reduce the amount of Ethernet-specific congestion engineering but introduces a more specialized environment.
Why does RoCE need careful congestion engineering?
RoCE carries RDMA semantics over Ethernet, commonly as RoCE v2 over routable IP. Ethernet was not originally designed to behave like a lossless, tightly synchronized HPC fabric, so operators must build the required behavior with priority flow control, explicit congestion notification, queue policy, routing and monitoring.

Priority and queue behavior
GPU collective packets can arrive in synchronized bursts. Priority flow control can pause a congested class, while explicit congestion signals tell senders to reduce pressure. Misconfigured priorities can create head-of-line blocking or pause unrelated traffic, so the lossless class must be narrowly defined and tested.
Telemetry
Measure queue depth, pause frames, ECN marks, retransmissions, link errors, per-rail utilization and collective completion time. Aggregate link utilization can look healthy while one rail or leaf is overloaded; per-path counters reveal that imbalance.
Isolation
Separate virtual networks, quality-of-service classes and routing policies keep storage, tenant and management flows from competing with GPU collectives. Isolation is a performance requirement, not merely a security feature.
How do network fabrics keep thousands of GPUs synchronized?
Synchronization depends on completing each collective consistently across workers. The fabric contributes in four ways:
- Predictable paths: leaf-spine or fat-tree designs bound hop count and provide known capacity between groups of leaves.
- Balanced rails: mapping GPU positions to corresponding NICs and leaves spreads traffic across planes rather than funneling it through one adapter.
- Collective-aware software: libraries such as NCCL select algorithms and paths suited to the topology, then balance traffic over active links.
- Fast failure handling: redundant planes and monitored links let traffic continue when a cable, NIC or switch path fails, albeit with reduced capacity.
A fabric can be electrically connected and still fail to synchronize efficiently if routing creates hot spots, if congestion control reacts too slowly, or if one failed path removes more capacity than the workload can tolerate.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Classify the workload. Training, fine-tuning, inference and mixed services have different collective intensity, message sizes and tolerance for jitter. Record whether traffic is dominated by all-reduce, all-gather, parameter serving or request fan-out.
- Set the scale-up boundary. Decide which GPUs must share NVLink/NVSwitch-style connectivity and which exchanges can cross the routed fabric. Model the bandwidth at that boundary instead of treating all GPU links as equivalent.
- Choose the scale-out technology. Compare InfiniBand with RoCE Ethernet against operational skills, existing monitoring, required isolation and the software ecosystem available for the chosen accelerators.
- Draw the rail map. Map every GPU, SuperNIC, leaf, spine and compute plane. Verify that each GPU has balanced paths and that no adapter or switch uplink is a hidden single point of failure.
- Size for synchronized bursts. Prefer nonblocking capacity for the expected collective pattern, or document the oversubscription ratio and prove that queueing remains acceptable at peak synchronization.
- Engineer RDMA controls. Define priority classes, flow control, ECN or equivalent congestion signaling, queue limits, routing policy and recovery behavior. Test failure and congestion scenarios rather than relying on defaults.
- Separate traffic domains. Keep storage, provisioning, user access, in-band management and out-of-band BMC traffic from GPU east-west flows with physical or logical isolation appropriate to the risk.
- Validate the physical layer. Check optics, cable reach, connector type, breakout configuration, port speed, power draw and cooling at the target deployment density. A topology that works on a diagram can fail when thermal or reach limits force lower link rates.
- Instrument before production. Establish baselines for per-link utilization, queue occupancy, ECN marks, retransmits, errors and collective duration. Alert on imbalance, not only on complete link failure.
What failures and symptoms should operators troubleshoot first?
- All-reduce suddenly takes longer: inspect per-rail utilization, queue depth and ECN or pause counters; a single congested leaf can dominate collective completion time.
- One GPU reports communication errors: check its SuperNIC, optical module, cable, switch port and lane breakout before changing collective settings.
- Performance drops after a link failure: verify that traffic moved to the redundant plane and quantify the lost capacity; the expected impact should track the failed plane’s share.
- Storage activity slows training: inspect whether converged-network queues or priorities allow storage traffic to consume the class reserved for GPU RDMA.
- Only some racks underperform: compare spine paths, oversubscription and rail mapping between affected and healthy leaves. Rack-local scale-up links may be fine while the inter-rack fabric is hot-spotted.
- Intermittent drops on RoCE: review MTU consistency, ECN configuration, priority-flow-control behavior, buffer thresholds and retransmission counters end to end.
What do UALink and Ultra Ethernet change?
UALink targets the scale-up boundary. Its 200G 1.0 specification defines low-latency accelerator-to-switch communication for up to 1,024 accelerators in an AI pod. The UALink consortium incorporated in 2024 and published its first specification in April 2025. Those are specification and ecosystem milestones, not evidence that UALink has replaced NVLink in deployed clusters.
The Ultra Ethernet Consortium released Specification 1.0 on June 11, 2025. Its stack spans NICs, switches, optics and cables so that Ethernet can be optimized as a complete AI/HPC system rather than as isolated components. The consortium’s published history lists Specification 1.1, released October 12, 2026, as the current revision; it adds scale-up optimizations, in-network collectives, congestion signaling and programmable congestion management.
When evaluating either effort, verify the exact revision supported by the NICs, switches, optics, drivers and collective libraries you will deploy. A specification does not by itself guarantee interoperable hardware, mature tooling or predictable performance in a particular cluster.
What is the practical bottom line for a GPU cluster?
Treat the network fabric as a distributed-computer subsystem. Keep scale-up and scale-out decisions separate, provide balanced nonblocking paths where collectives require them, run RDMA only with deliberate congestion and telemetry controls, and isolate management and storage traffic. InfiniBand, RoCE Ethernet and emerging standards can all be valid choices; the right one is the fabric your team can size, observe, operate and recover under the workload’s synchronized communication pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ordinary Ethernet switches connect GPUs for AI training?
They can carry GPU traffic, but ordinary best-effort configuration is not equivalent to an AI fabric. Training deployments generally require RDMA-capable NICs, carefully engineered RoCE or InfiniBand behavior, quality-of-service isolation and telemetry; otherwise packet loss and queueing can leave GPUs waiting.
Does every GPU need a dedicated network cable to every other GPU?
No. Switch fabrics provide shared paths, while rail-aware cabling and multiple planes distribute flows across those paths. The design goal is balanced, failure-tolerant bandwidth rather than a full mesh of direct cables.
How much bandwidth does inference need compared with training?
There is no single ratio. Inference may be dominated by request fan-out, model sharding or retrieval traffic, while training repeatedly performs large collectives such as all-reduce. Measure message sizes, concurrency and synchronization frequency for the serving system instead of reusing a training topology unchanged.
What is oversubscription in a GPU network?
Oversubscription means the aggregate bandwidth toward an upstream layer is lower than the sum of endpoint port rates. It can reduce cost, but synchronized collective bursts then compete for that smaller capacity, so the acceptable ratio must be validated against measured queueing and collective completion time.
