AI data centers run on electricity. Servers, networking equipment, storage systems and cooling all draw power, usually from the local grid. Natural gas and other fuels matter because they generate much of that electricity or, in some projects, produce power onsite when grid connections are delayed. Oil is different: authoritative global sources do not publish a dependable oil share for AI or data-center electricity, so it should not be assigned a percentage without separate evidence. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that all data centers used about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024—roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption—and projects about 945 TWh by 2030 in its base case.

How much electricity do AI data centers use?

AI is increasing data-center electricity demand faster than conventional online services because training and serving models require large numbers of high-performance accelerators operating together. The IEA’s 2025 analysis puts total global data-center consumption at 415 TWh in 2024, equal to about 1.5% of worldwide electricity use. That figure covers every type of data center, not only AI facilities, so it should not be read as an AI-only total.

What the 2030 projection means

In the IEA base case, global data-center consumption reaches approximately 945 TWh in 2030. Generation serving data centers rises from about 460 TWh in 2024 to more than 1,000 TWh in 2030 in the same analysis. The difference between electricity consumed at the facility and generation serving it reflects losses and the way supply is accounted for; the two numbers are not interchangeable.

The IEA reports 17% growth in global data-center electricity demand and 50% growth in AI-focused data-center demand in its 2025 outlook. Those are outlook figures, not a guarantee that every year or every region will match the same rate. Actual demand will depend on model sizes, utilization, hardware efficiency, cooling design, the pace of new construction and whether some workloads move to smaller or more efficient models.

Why a single AI facility can stress a local grid

Global percentages hide the geographic concentration of AI capacity. A cluster of large facilities can appear in one transmission zone even while national electricity demand changes only modestly. Utilities then have to provide a large, steady connection plus enough flexibility for rapid changes in computing load. Transmission upgrades, substations and generation can take longer to build than the data center itself, creating a connection bottleneck.

What equipment in an AI data center consumes electricity?

The electricity bill is not just the processors. Every step that moves, stores or cools data adds load, and high-density AI hardware makes the supporting systems more significant.

Compute servers and accelerators

Graphics processors and other AI accelerators perform matrix calculations for training and inference. A training run can keep thousands of chips busy for days or weeks. Inference systems may operate continuously to answer user requests, with demand rising and falling in milliseconds as traffic changes. Power-delivery equipment converts incoming electricity to the voltages used by servers and contributes its own losses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Networking and storage

AI training servers exchange data constantly, so high-speed switches, optical links and network-interface hardware remain active alongside the accelerators. Storage arrays hold training data, model checkpoints and logs. These systems consume less than the main compute fleet in many installations, but they operate continuously and become material at large scale.

Cooling and facility infrastructure

Nearly all electricity entering a processor eventually becomes heat. Fans and chilled-water systems remove that heat; liquid cooling can move it more efficiently in very dense racks but still requires pumps, heat exchangers and controls. Uninterruptible-power systems, transformers, lighting and security systems add further demand. A facility’s total meter reading therefore exceeds the rating printed on its servers.

Why power demand fluctuates

AI workloads can change electrical demand quickly when jobs start, finish or shift between clusters. The grid must handle the normal high load as well as these ramps. Operators use power-management software, workload scheduling and battery systems to smooth peaks, but those measures do not eliminate the need for firm capacity and a robust connection.

The IEA estimates that one advanced AI server rack could have a 2027 peak-demand equivalent of approximately 65 households. This is a comparison of peak electrical demand, not a claim that one rack uses the same annual energy as 65 homes. Rack designs, utilization and regional household consumption vary.

How does natural gas supply electricity to AI data centers?

Natural gas usually reaches an AI data center indirectly: a gas-fired power plant burns fuel, produces electricity and sends that electricity through the grid. In the IEA’s 2025 analysis, natural gas supplied about 26% of current global data-center electricity, making it the third-largest source in that assessment. In the United States, gas supplied more than 40% of data-center electricity in 2024, a regional figure that should not be substituted for the global mix.

Grid-connected gas generation

Gas turbines can be dispatched when demand is high or when wind and solar output is low. That flexibility is valuable to utilities serving data centers that operate around the clock. A gas plant may therefore be part of the marginal supply during a particular hour even if the facility has contracted for renewable electricity over the year. Contracts, certificates and physical grid flows are different accounting concepts.

Onsite gas generation

Some developers are considering engines or turbines located at the data-center campus because a new grid connection may not be available quickly enough. The IEA’s 2026 analysis indicates that 15 to 27 gigawatts (GW) of onsite natural-gas capacity could serve data centers by 2030, mostly in the United States. This is a scenario range, not installed capacity today and not a prediction that every project will proceed.

Onsite generation can shorten the wait for initial power and provide dispatchable output, but it requires fuel pipelines or storage, emissions controls, maintenance, noise management and a plan for heat rejection. A project may still need the grid for backup, supplemental capacity or future expansion. Local air-quality permits and gas-network constraints can become as important as the electrical interconnection.

Natural gas is a supply source, not the data center’s direct load

Servers do not burn pipeline gas. They consume electricity whose upstream generation may have used gas. Keeping that distinction clear prevents double counting: a facility’s meter records electrical consumption, while fuel use and emissions are measured at the generating plant or onsite generator.

Do AI data centers run on oil?

Oil should not be presented as a quantified part of normal AI data-center electricity use based on the available IEA material. The IEA analysis gives detailed shares for renewables, natural gas, nuclear and coal, but it does not publish an authoritative oil percentage for data-center electricity or AI facilities specifically.

Where oil can appear

Diesel or other liquid fuels may be stored for emergency generators that start during a grid outage. Those generators are contingency equipment, not normally the primary source for a continuously operating campus. Temporary generators can also be used during construction, testing or an interim period before permanent electrical service arrives. The amount and frequency of such use depend on local reliability rules, permit conditions and the operator’s design.

Why an oil percentage would be misleading

A national grid mix may include some oil-fired generation, while a particular data center may have no oil generation at all. Conversely, a site with substantial diesel backup could burn fuel during tests or outages without that use appearing as routine electricity supply. Without a source that defines the boundary, period and geography, assigning an oil share would imply precision the evidence does not support.

How do electricity, natural gas and oil compare for AI facilities?

The three terms describe different points in the energy chain. Electricity is the immediate input to computing equipment; natural gas is primarily an upstream fuel or an onsite generation option; oil is generally associated with backup or temporary generation rather than ordinary operation.

Question Electricity Natural gas Oil or diesel
How it reaches the load Delivered through the grid or produced onsite, then fed to servers and cooling equipment Usually burned at a power plant whose electricity reaches the facility through the grid; sometimes burned onsite Usually stored onsite for emergency generators or temporary power
Role in normal operation Essential and continuous; every computing and cooling function uses it Major upstream source of grid electricity; can provide dispatchable onsite generation Normally contingency, testing or interim supply; routine share for AI data centers is not established
Dispatchability Depends on the generation and grid supporting it; batteries and controls can manage short events High for turbines and engines when fuel and equipment are available High for a maintained generator, but limited by stored fuel and emissions rules
Connection and construction issue Large substations and transmission upgrades may delay service Pipeline capacity, plant construction and air permits can limit expansion Fuel storage, deliveries, testing and permitting constrain prolonged use
Emissions point Indirect emissions depend on the generation mix and losses Combustion emissions occur at the power plant or onsite engine, with upstream gas-production impacts Combustion emissions occur at the generator; upstream oil impacts also exist
Evidence for data-center share 415 TWh globally in 2024; 1.5% of global electricity consumption (IEA) About 26% globally in the IEA analysis; over 40% of U.S. data-center electricity in 2024 No authoritative AI or global data-center percentage in the cited IEA material

Will renewables and nuclear replace gas as AI demand grows?

The IEA projects that renewables will meet about half of additional data-center electricity demand through 2035. Natural gas and nuclear also provide major additions of firm generation in that outlook. “Firm” means generation that can be scheduled or relied on when needed; it does not mean that a source runs at maximum output every hour.

Renewables

Wind, solar, hydropower and other renewable resources can reduce the emissions intensity of electricity serving data centers. Their output varies by weather and time of day, so projects need transmission, storage, demand flexibility, or firm generation to maintain service when renewable output is low. A renewable contract does not automatically mean the facility is physically powered by renewable electrons every hour.

Nuclear and other firm sources

Nuclear plants provide steady, low-carbon generation where they are available and connected to the relevant grid. Their construction schedules, licensing and transmission requirements differ from those of gas turbines. Existing hydroelectric plants, geothermal resources and other firm technologies may also contribute, but the practical mix is regional.

Why projections are scenarios

The 2030 and 2035 figures are IEA outlook scenarios built from assumptions about data-center construction, hardware efficiency, policy, fuel prices and power-sector investment. They describe a plausible pathway, not a guaranteed result. Delays in transmission, faster improvements in computing efficiency or changes in AI usage could move actual demand above or below the projection.

Why do AI data centers create local power bottlenecks?

AI campuses concentrate thousands of high-power racks in a small area. Even when a country has enough annual electricity, the local network may lack a substation, transmission line or generation resource that can deliver the required capacity at the requested date.

Interconnection queues

Utilities study whether a proposed load can connect safely and what network upgrades are needed. A large AI project may require new transformers, protection equipment and transmission reinforcements. Those studies and construction work can take years, so developers sometimes phase the build, locate near existing capacity or propose onsite generation.

Reliability and power quality

Accelerator clusters are sensitive to voltage disturbances and interruptions. Facilities use redundant feeds, uninterruptible-power systems and backup generators to ride through faults. These systems protect the computing equipment, but they do not remove the underlying need for sufficient generation and transmission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regional differences

The global 26% gas share and the U.S. figure above describe different geographies. A region dominated by hydropower, coal, nuclear or renewables will have a different upstream fuel profile. Readers evaluating a proposed facility should ask for the specific utility territory, connection date, contracted supply and whether onsite generation is included.

How should you interpret claims about AI energy and fossil fuels?

Start by identifying the boundary of the claim. “AI electricity use” can mean chip energy, the whole data-center meter, or all generation required to supply the facility. “Gas-powered data center” may mean a grid connected to gas-heavy generation or an onsite turbine. Those descriptions are not equivalent.

  • Check the year and geography. The IEA’s 2024 global estimate, 2024 U.S. gas share and 2030 projection answer different questions.
  • Separate consumption from generation. Electricity used at the facility is not the same as fuel burned to produce it.
  • Distinguish routine from contingency supply. Backup diesel capacity does not prove that oil supplies a large share of annual operations.
  • Ask whether a number is measured or projected. Forecasts such as 945 TWh in 2030 and 15–27 GW of onsite gas capacity are scenario outputs.
  • Look for the accounting boundary. A renewable-energy contract, a physical grid mix and hourly emissions can produce different results for the same facility.

The most defensible conclusion is straightforward: AI data centers are electricity loads; natural gas is already an important source of the electricity serving them and may be used onsite; oil’s normal role is not quantified by the cited authoritative sources and should not be guessed.

What does this mean for future electricity demand?

If AI deployment continues expanding, utilities will need both more total generation and more deliverable capacity in the places where facilities cluster. Efficiency improvements can reduce electricity per model query, but rapid growth in the number of queries and training runs can offset those savings. Planning therefore involves hardware efficiency, cooling design, transmission, generation mix, storage and demand management together rather than treating any single fuel as the solution.

For readers comparing projects or policy claims, the useful questions are practical: How many megawatts will the campus draw at peak and on average? When will the grid connection be ready? What generation serves the local system? Is proposed gas capacity temporary or permanent? What backup fuel is stored, how often is it tested, and what emissions permits apply? Answers to those questions reveal more than a broad label such as “renewable,” “gas-powered” or “oil-backed.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a renewable-energy contract mean an AI data center uses only renewable electricity?

Not necessarily. A contract or certificate can match annual energy purchases while the facility remains physically connected to a grid that serves it with a changing hourly mix. Hourly matching, storage and the local grid’s generation determine how closely consumption follows renewable output.

Why can an AI data center need gas power if it has a grid connection?

The grid connection delivers electricity, but the connected system may not have enough firm capacity during peak conditions or while new transmission is being built. Developers may propose onsite gas engines or turbines to obtain dispatchable power sooner or to supplement the grid.

Are diesel backup generators included in a data center’s electricity-use number?

A facility’s reported electricity consumption normally reflects electricity delivered to its loads, while fuel burned in a backup generator is tracked separately. Generator tests and outage operation can add fuel use and emissions without representing the site’s ordinary annual power source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which regions will see the biggest AI data-center electricity impacts?

Impacts are greatest where many high-density facilities seek connections in the same transmission zone. Local substation capacity, transmission projects, generation availability and permitting can matter more than a country’s overall annual electricity balance.
