AI companion apps can remember you in several different ways: a visible list of saved facts, an automatically updated summary of past conversations, or information inferred from chat history and connected data. That means turning a memory setting off is not always the same as deleting what an app knows. To remove a detail reliably, identify every place it may exist, delete the saved memory and its source chat or file, disconnect relevant apps, and allow for any stated retention period. The exact controls differ by service, plan, region and platform.
What does an AI companion mean by “memory”?
There is no universal technical definition. The word can describe a user-visible record, a hidden profile assembled from conversations, or ordinary chat history that the model can use while a conversation or account remains available.
Explicit saved memories
Some services maintain individual facts such as your name, location, family members, allergies, hobbies, work, goals or communication preferences. These entries may be shown in a Memory or Personalization screen, where you can edit or remove them. Pi describes this type of long-term information and lets users issue direct “Remember …” and forget requests. Replika says, “Replika’s memory is built on layers,” with one layer visible in its Memory tab and another that uses patterns from conversation history.
Conversation-history patterns
An app may generate a summary or infer a preference without creating an obvious item in a list. Repeatedly mentioning that you work nights, for example, may lead an assistant to suggest a different routine even if no memory entry says “works nights.” Deleting a visible item therefore may not remove the chat passages or profile signals from which it was derived.

Connected data and uploaded files
Files, calendars, email, cloud storage and other connected services can provide another route to the same fact. OpenAI and Google both document cases in which deleting a chat is not enough: the relevant file or connected-app data may require a separate action. Treat each connected source as an independent copy until the service says otherwise.

These differences explain why a setting labeled Memory, Personalization or History cannot be interpreted the same way everywhere. OpenAI explicitly warns that available controls can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace.

How can I ask an app what it remembers?
Start with a direct question, then verify the answer in the service’s dedicated control. A chat response is useful for discovery, but the management screen is the stronger record for deletion.
Use a supported memory question
Replika documents asking what it remembers about you. Pi supports direct instructions such as “Remember that I am vegetarian” or “Forget that I live in …”. If a service does not document either command, do not assume that a natural-language request changed an account record.

Open the account-level control
- Replika: open the Memory screen and review each listed fact.
- Pi: go to Settings > Account > Manage Memories.
- ChatGPT: go to Settings > Personalization > Memory, if the option is available for your account.
- Microsoft Copilot Studio: use the documented memory portal.
- Snapchat My AI: use the My AI data controls to review and delete stored conversations; the cited documentation does not describe an itemized memory list.
- Google Gemini: review chat activity and the connected-app permissions or data sources associated with the account.
Record what you find before changing it
If the detail matters—for example, an allergy, medical condition, workplace or child’s name—copy the exact wording, note which account and workspace displayed it, and check whether the same fact appears in a chat or uploaded document. This prevents a partial deletion from being mistaken for a complete one.
How do I make an AI companion forget one detail?
Use a layered deletion rather than relying on a single “forget” sentence. The order below is designed to remove both the personalization record and the material that could recreate it.

Write down the wording and any variants, nicknames or related details. Search chats, files and connected services for those variants.
- Delete the saved item. Remove it from the Memory, Manage Memories or Personalization screen. If the service supports a forget command, issue it as well, then confirm in the management screen.
- Remove the source conversation. Delete the chat that contains the fact, including archived conversations if the product treats them as retained history. OpenAI’s guidance distinguishes saved memories from chats, so doing only one of these steps is incomplete there.
- Delete or disconnect source files and apps. Remove an uploaded document and revoke the connected-app link when either contains the information. Google specifically notes that chat deletion and connected-app disconnection may be separate requirements.
- Turn off future personalization if needed. Disable the memory or personalization feature after removing the existing record. This limits future use; it is not proof that previously stored data has been erased.
- Allow the stated processing window. Snapchat documents up to 30 days for deletion of relevant My AI data from its servers. OpenAI documents up to 30 days for logs of deleted saved memories used for safety and debugging.
- Test from a clean conversation. Start a new chat after the relevant window, avoid mentioning the fact, and see whether the service volunteers it. A single answer is not a formal erasure certificate, but it can reveal an overlooked source.
Why a negative reaction is not enough
Ratings, thumbs-down buttons and corrections usually provide feedback about an answer. Pi specifically notes that negative feedback does not itself delete a memory, so use the dedicated memory control for removal.
Does turning memory off delete old chats or memories?
No. “Off” generally controls future use, while deletion controls stored records; the two actions are separate unless a service explicitly links them.
Microsoft states this directly: turning Memory off does not delete stored memories. OpenAI likewise separates the saved-memory setting from deletion of the memory and the chats, files or connected-app records that supplied it. Snapchat describes conversation storage and a deletion process rather than promising that a general switch erases prior data. For Replika and Pi, the cited help material explains memory management but does not establish that disabling a setting automatically removes existing records.

Because labels differ, read the confirmation text carefully. A control that says “stop using memory,” “pause personalization” or “turn off history” may affect model behavior without changing retention.

Persistent recall after a deletion request usually has a specific cause. Check these possibilities in order.
The source chat still exists
A saved profile item can be deleted while the original conversation remains searchable or available as context. Remove the conversation from the account, including archived versions where the service provides them.
The fact exists in more than one representation
The same information may appear as a visible memory, an automatically generated summary and several chat messages. Removing one representation does not necessarily remove the others.
A connected file or app supplied it
An assistant can reintroduce a detail from a calendar, document, email or other linked service. Delete the record at its source or disconnect that integration before testing again.

The model inferred it from other facts
Deleting “I am a teacher” will not necessarily stop a model from inferring a school-related role from conversations about classes, grading and lesson plans. Remove the supporting details if you need to prevent that inference, and avoid presenting the inferred conclusion as proof that the deleted memory survived.
Deletion is still processing
Documented windows matter. Snapchat’s current help documentation allows up to 30 days for server deletion of relevant My AI data, while OpenAI allows up to 30 days for deleted-memory logs used for safety and debugging. During such a window, behavior may not change immediately.
You are checking a different account or workspace
Personal and work accounts, different login methods, team workspaces and multiple devices can expose different memory stores. Confirm the account identifier and workspace before repeating the deletion.
What is the safest end-to-end privacy workflow?
Use this sequence whenever a detail is sensitive or no longer accurate.
- Inventory: ask what the assistant remembers where supported, then inspect the dedicated memory screen, chat history, uploaded files and connected apps.
- Classify: mark each occurrence as a saved memory, ordinary transcript, inferred preference, file record or external-app record.
- Correct or delete: edit a fact that should remain true but has changed; delete a fact that should not be retained. Do not depend on feedback buttons.
- Break the source links: remove chats, archived chats, files and connected-app data in the places identified during the inventory.
- Restrict future use: turn off memory or personalization if you do not want new details used for continuity. Check whether the setting applies to the current plan, platform, region and workspace.
- Wait and verify: observe the service’s stated retention period, then test in a new conversation without repeating the deleted information.
- Escalate only when necessary: use account deletion when you need to remove the whole account and accept the consequences of losing all associated data.
What should I do when memory controls are missing or ineffective?

When is account deletion the right choice?
Account deletion is the broadest option, but it also removes access, history and settings you may want to keep. Replika states that deleting an account permanently erases all data and cannot be undone. Other services may have different scopes and retention terms, so read the confirmation and export anything you are legally or practically required to retain before proceeding.

For a single outdated preference, targeted deletion is less disruptive. Consider account deletion when you cannot identify every source, are leaving the service permanently, or need the account itself removed rather than merely stopping personalization.
What can users reasonably expect from AI memory?
Expect an uneven system, not a single durable profile with a guaranteed “delete everywhere” button. A service may remember an explicit item, draw on a transcript, infer a preference or retrieve a connected document, and each layer can have different controls and retention rules.
Official help pages do not provide a cross-service prevalence statistic or an independent benchmark of memory accuracy. Treat a companion’s claim about what it remembers as a clue, verify it in account controls, and manage the underlying records directly.

Can an AI companion remember something I never explicitly asked it to save?
Yes. Some systems derive patterns from conversation history or generate summaries without a visible “remember this” command. Repeated context can therefore influence replies even when you never issued a save instruction.
Does deleting a chat remove copies held in backups immediately?
Not necessarily. Published documentation may specify a processing window rather than instant removal; Snapchat and OpenAI each document periods of up to 30 days for particular deletion-related data. The exact treatment of backups or safety logs depends on the service’s policy.
Can I stop new sensitive details from being saved before I chat?
If the service offers a memory or personalization switch, disable it before sharing the information and check whether the setting applies to the current account and workspace. Otherwise, avoid entering identifying details and do not connect files or apps that contain them.
Is deleting a memory enough if the same fact appears in a document?
No. An uploaded file or connected service can provide the fact again after the profile item is removed. Delete the document or disconnect the integration as a separate step.
