AI companies recruit human data labelers through two main routes: direct contract-job postings and contributor platforms or data-vendor pools. Applicants usually create a profile, describe skills and languages, complete identity or background checks when required, and pass a sample annotation or evaluation task. A successful screening step may make you eligible for projects, but it is not a promise of paid work. The exact task, location, rate, hours, equipment, privacy terms and continuity depend on the individual project and can change quickly.
Where do AI companies find human data labelers?
Recruiting is split between company-specific hiring and marketplaces that maintain pools of contributors. The channel affects who contracts with you, how you are screened and whether you are applying for a defined project or merely becoming eligible for future matching.
Direct applications to contract roles
Some companies publish a role for a known task and invite applications through their own careers or contractor process. A Cohere posting for a remote, part-time contractor in Canada described comparing and ranking model outputs, writing justifications, stress-testing behavior, creating datasets, and applying or helping build rubrics. That specific advertisement requested 16 hours per week and listed CAD $30 per hour; those terms apply only to that posting and should be confirmed if it is still open.
A Legion Intelligence listing described labeling and curating scanned text and images. It emphasized accuracy, consistency, attention to detail and following instructions, required a laptop and reliable internet, said special hardware was unnecessary, and listed a five-week initial contract at $20 per hour for 15 hours per week. The listing was crawled about a year before the current research date, so treat the rate, duration and availability as a dated example rather than a current offer.

Contributor platforms and vendor pools
Other recruiters operate a standing contributor intake. HumanSignal describes a flow in which a worker creates an account, verifies an email address, adds skills and languages, completes identity verification and is matched to projects according to skills, location and project requirements.
OpenTrain AI describes a marketplace in which employers post jobs and review candidates while labelers create profiles and apply. Handshake’s contractor agreement similarly covers registration, expertise information, learning materials, an initial task and project-specific onboarding. It explicitly warns that completing those steps does not guarantee participation in a project.
What does the recruitment process look like?
There is no single industry-wide hiring sequence. Most opportunities combine some of the following stages, but a small project may use only a profile review while a sensitive or specialist project can require several checks.

Start from the company’s published careers page or the logged-in contributor platform, not an unsolicited message. Confirm the legal entity, country eligibility and whether the listing is still active.
- Create a profile or submit an application. Expect to provide location, language proficiency, relevant subject knowledge, work history and the kinds of tasks you can perform. Some platforms ask for a résumé; others rely on structured profile fields.
- Complete identity or background checks when requested. HumanSignal documents identity verification. Other projects can request a background check because of client, safety or data-access requirements. Read what information is collected, who processes it and how long it is retained before submitting documents.
- Take an assessment or sample task. A qualification may ask you to label text or images, rank model answers, identify safety issues or explain why one response is better. Follow the written rubric exactly and preserve your work if the platform provides an appeal or feedback route.
- Finish project training. Passing an intake exercise can be followed by a guideline course, calibration set or software orientation specific to the client’s dataset.
- Wait for a match or receive a project offer. A pool may show no work immediately. Demand, language, location, security level and the client’s expertise requirements determine whether an eligible contributor is invited.
- Review and accept the contract. Check contractor or employee status, rate basis, minimum or expected hours, payment schedule, taxes, confidentiality, data-handling rules and the end date before starting.
Handshake states in its contractor agreement: “Successful completion of the onboarding process, including reviewing the learning and development materials and successfully completing an initial Task does not guarantee that you will be offered the opportunity to participate in any Projects.” That distinction is central: qualification can mean only that you are in an approved pool.
What kinds of tasks do labelers perform?
“Data labeling” covers substantially different work. A generalist assignment may be repetitive tagging, while a model-evaluation contract can require judgment, written explanations and the creation of quality standards.
| Task category | Typical activity | Capabilities employers may test |
|---|---|---|
| Basic annotation | Tag text, images or scanned documents according to a label set. | Accuracy, consistency, careful reading and rule-following. |
| Quality review | Check another worker’s labels, resolve disagreements or flag ambiguous examples. | Attention to detail, dependable decisions and documentation. |
| Preference ranking | Compare model outputs and select the more useful, accurate or appropriate response. | Reasoning, clear written justifications and consistent use of criteria. |
| Safety and failure analysis | Probe outputs for harmful, biased, misleading or policy-breaking behavior. | Ability to recognize failure modes and explain risk precisely. |
| Dataset and rubric authoring | Create examples, evaluation questions or the instructions used by other labelers. | Subject expertise, writing skill and the ability to turn judgments into repeatable rules. |
Cohere’s example combined ranking, written justification, stress-testing, dataset creation and rubric work. Terac’s listing sought prior annotation or model-evaluation experience and described labeling text or media while evaluating AI responses. These are examples of role scope, not a universal definition or credential standard.
Do you need previous experience to become a data labeler?
No single experience requirement applies. Some projects favor applicants who have already annotated data or evaluated models; others are designed for contributors with no prior AI background.
When experience helps
Terac asked for annotation or model-evaluation experience, the ability to follow detailed guidelines and independent work habits. Experience can also help with quality-assurance roles, specialist domains, or assignments in which you must justify nuanced judgments rather than choose a simple category.
When experience is not required
Aelven’s contributor listing described a project-based opportunity that did not require prior AI experience. Its activities could include using AI tools, carrying out specified tasks or providing feedback. Read each project’s criteria instead of assuming that an entry-level labeler must hold a technical qualification.

Skills that recur across postings
- Accurate, consistent decisions over many similar items.
- Careful reading and strict adherence to changing guidelines.
- Reliable attendance and the ability to work independently.
- Clear written explanations when a decision must be audited.
- Language or subject-matter expertise when the dataset demands it.
The reviewed postings do not establish a uniform degree, certification or years-of-experience requirement. They do show a progression from straightforward labeling to evaluation, dataset design and rubric development.
Are data-labeling assessments paid?
There is no universal rule. The available evidence shows that platforms can require an initial task or assessment, but it does not establish whether every assessment is paid. Before starting, look for a stated rate, one-time fee, expected completion time, ownership of submitted work and the point at which payment becomes due.

If the terms are silent, ask through the platform’s official support channel. Do not assume that an assessment is employment, and do not provide extensive unpaid production work merely because it is called a “test.” Keep a copy of the instructions and any acceptance message so you can compare the promised terms with the eventual contract.
How much do human data labelers earn, and what are the work terms?
Rates in individual advertisements cannot be converted into a typical industry wage. They also differ by country, task complexity, tax status and whether the figure is hourly, per item or contingent on quality.
| Documented example | Published terms | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cohere contractor posting | Canada-only, remote, part time; CAD $30 per hour; 16 hours per week. | Terms of one specific advertisement, not a market average or guaranteed current opening. |
| Legion Intelligence listing | $20 per hour; 15 hours per week; five-week initial contract; laptop and reliable internet required. | Listing crawled about a year before the current research date, so verify or omit it when evaluating a live opportunity. |
Arrangements reviewed included remote, independent-contractor, part-time and project-based work. A laptop is a realistic baseline: the Legion listing required one, while the Cohere role described a bring-your-own-device setup. The sources do not justify recommending a particular brand, model or high-performance computer, and the Legion listing said no special hardware was needed.
Task availability is a separate question from eligibility. Handshake’s agreement ties offers to expertise requirements and demand. TIME has reported varied worker experiences, including assessments and uncertain access to tasks, but those accounts are anecdotal and do not measure how common any particular outcome is.

How can you compare two labeling opportunities?
Use the same checklist for a direct contract, a contributor marketplace and a vendor pool. A higher headline rate may be less attractive if work is sporadic, the project is restricted to a different country or payment is delayed.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Work source | Is this a direct employer posting, a platform account or a vendor recruiting for a client? |
| Selection steps | Are profile review, identity verification, a background check, a test and project training required? |
| Task type | Will you label data, review quality, rank preferences, evaluate safety, author examples or provide specialist judgments? |
| Contract terms | Are you an employee or contractor? Which country is eligible? Is pay hourly, per task or conditional on acceptance? When and how are you paid? |
| Continuity | Is there a defined start and end date, a minimum number of hours or only possible future matching? |
| Equipment and software | Do you need a laptop, reliable internet, a webcam, special software or a managed workspace? Who pays for them? |
| Data handling | What personal information is collected, what confidential material will you see and how must it be stored or deleted? |
Write down answers before accepting. If a platform cannot state who the contracting party is, how a rate is calculated or how to contact support, treat that uncertainty as a material risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

Use the official sign-up route and keep sensitive communication inside the authenticated platform whenever possible. DataAnnotation’s safety guidance says it will not ask applicants to pay and advises avoiding unverified outreach or sharing financial information outside the logged-in service. That is platform-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every service using a similar name.

- Check the domain and spelling before uploading identification or tax details.
- Never pay an “activation,” equipment, training or withdrawal fee to obtain access to work.
- Confirm that a request for bank information appears only after a verifiable contract and through the platform’s secure payment process.
- Ask why identity documents are needed, which entity receives them and how long they are retained.
- Be wary of pressure to move to private messaging, install unknown software or complete large volumes of unpaid production data.
AI recruitment can also involve automated matching, résumé parsing, candidate ranking, chatbots or assessments. The OECD discusses these uses in recruitment generally; that context does not prove that every AI company uses those tools to select labelers. If an automated decision appears incorrect, look for a human-review or appeal procedure.
What should you expect after passing the test?
You may be placed in a qualified pool, invited to project-specific training or offered a contract immediately. You may also receive no assignment because the client needs a different language, location, specialty or volume at that moment. Keep your profile current, but do not treat “approved,” “eligible” or “onboarded” as synonymous with employed.
Before doing production work, obtain the project’s current instructions and confirm the rate and acceptance rules in writing. Guidelines can change after calibration, and a platform may remove access when demand falls or a client closes a dataset.
What is not known about the data-labeling workforce?
The documented postings and platform procedures do not provide a reliable total number of human labelers recruited by AI companies, a representative industry wage or the prevalence of any particular screening practice. Broader online labor-platform estimates reported by TIME do not count data-annotation workers specifically and should not be presented as a workforce total.
Job openings, rates, geographic eligibility, onboarding flows and task supply are volatile. Confirm them on the relevant official page at the time you apply, and read the project agreement rather than relying on an old screenshot or a general description of the platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do AI labeling work from any country?
No. Location can be an explicit eligibility filter, and projects may also require a particular language, time zone or legal ability to contract. A Canada-only posting, for example, cannot be assumed to accept applicants elsewhere.
Are data labelers employees or freelancers?
Both arrangements exist, but the examples documented here are largely remote contractor or project-based roles. Your agreement should identify the contracting entity, tax responsibility, payment schedule and any benefits rather than leaving status implicit.
What happens if I disagree with a rejected annotation?
Look for calibration feedback, an appeal channel or a quality-review policy in the project documentation. Save the relevant guideline version and your explanation, because criteria can be updated and a later reviewer may need the exact context.
Do I need a powerful computer for annotation work?
The cited examples support a laptop and reliable internet, with one listing explicitly saying special hardware was not required. Requirements can change for video, local software or secure environments, so verify the project’s device and browser specifications before buying equipment.
