AI coding agents can help implement fraud-detection changes—such as wiring event data to a model, drafting rules, building tests, and preparing audit views—but they should not own fraud policy or approve consequential production changes. A fraud score is not a complete decision: the system must combine data, model output, decision rules, and an action such as approval or human review. People still need to set acceptable trade-offs, check whether a change reflects the intended policy, investigate ambiguous cases, and authorize high-impact releases.
What does it mean for an AI coding agent to configure fraud detection?
It means using an agent as an implementation assistant for changes to the software around a fraud decision—not delegating responsibility for that decision. Given a clear specification, an agent might draft a schema change, connect an event-processing service to a model, express a rule, create test fixtures, or build a view that helps investigators understand past evaluations.
The distinction matters because fraud systems make decisions through several connected layers. Event data describes what happened; a model may produce a score; rules interpret that score and other variables; and the system applies an outcome. A score by itself does not say what the business should do. Whether a particular event is approved, sent for investigation, assigned a risk level, or handled another way is a policy choice that needs an accountable owner.

Amazon Fraud Detector documentation provides a concrete example of this system shape. Its documented workflow moves from defining an event type and its data, through preparing labeled historical data and training and evaluating a model, to adding rules and outcomes, testing a detector, and deploying it. In that service, a detector combines a model and rules for a particular event. These are product-specific examples, not a universal fraud-system design or a set of recommended thresholds.

How does a fraud decision move from event data to an action?
A useful way to understand the configuration work is to follow one event through the system. Each stage has different questions for an agent to help implement and different decisions that must remain reviewable.
1. Define the event and its data
An event type describes the activity the system evaluates and the information available about it. Before code changes begin, the fraud owner and relevant data stakeholders should agree on the event being addressed, which fields are permitted, how those fields are defined, and what the system must do when a field is missing or malformed. Historical data also needs labels that make sense for the intended training and evaluation task.
An agent can help update a schema, map incoming fields, validate payloads, and prepare test fixtures. It cannot decide whether a data field is appropriate to use, whether a historical label is trustworthy, or whether a new data source creates an unacceptable privacy or customer-impact risk. Those questions require context beyond whether the code compiles.
2. Train or connect a model
A model uses event information to estimate risk or another target defined for the system. In a configuration change, the agent may help with API wiring, model-version references, configuration files, or repeatable evaluation scripts. The team still needs to understand what model output means, which data was used, and what the evaluation does—and does not—establish.
Model evaluation is not the same as selecting a business action. A score can be useful input to a rule, but the score cutoff and the consequences of crossing it affect fraud losses, customer friction, and the workload placed on investigators. Those consequences should be specified and approved by people responsible for the policy.
3. Express rules and outcomes
Rules translate model output and event variables into operational outcomes. AWS’s product FAQ gives an illustrative rule that combines a model-score threshold with country data, and its documentation describes outcomes such as approving an event, sending it for review, or assigning risk levels. The example demonstrates that rules can combine inputs; it is not a recommendation to use any particular country condition or score threshold.

A coding agent can draft a rule expression from an approved specification, but a fraud owner should verify the condition, cutoff, exceptions, and resulting action. The review should include what happens when conditions overlap, when inputs are absent, and when an event falls near a boundary. A syntactically valid rule can still apply the wrong policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Test, deploy, and retain decision history
Before deployment, teams need to test whether the detector behaves as specified and whether the change has unintended effects on known cases. AWS documentation describes testing a detector before deploying it. It also describes reviewing past evaluations and filtering them by outcome, model, rule, or event metadata—useful for investigating which configuration produced a past decision.
That history is important operational evidence, not just a debugging convenience. An investigation outcome can inform later analysis, while the record of the model and rule involved helps explain how an earlier evaluation was handled. A coding agent can help build test and audit tooling, but people must define what evidence investigators need and whether the resulting records protect sensitive information.
Which parts of this workflow can an agent help implement?
An agent is most useful when the requested change is narrow, testable, and described in enough detail that a reviewer can compare the implementation with an approved intent. It can reduce repetitive engineering work, but its output should remain visible as a change set rather than silently becoming policy.
| Work item | Useful agent contribution | Human decision that remains |
|---|---|---|
| Event schema and data plumbing | Draft schema updates, mappings, validation, API wiring, and tests for expected payloads. | Approve the event definition and data permitted for use; assess privacy, customer impact, and missing-data behavior. |
| Model integration | Connect a model reference, automate repeatable evaluation steps, and document configuration changes. | Interpret the evaluation in context and decide whether the model is suitable for the intended task. |
| Rules and outcomes | Translate an approved rule specification into an expression and add boundary-case tests. | Set the risk threshold, exceptions, and action for each condition. |
| Testing and investigation tools | Create fixtures, simulation scripts, and audit views that expose relevant configuration details. | Choose meaningful cases and confirm that the tools answer investigators’ questions without exposing inappropriate data. |
| Release preparation | Summarize a diff, run checks, and assemble evidence for review. | Decide whether the change is acceptable and authorize deployment. |
This division is an engineering recommendation based on the documented configuration workflow and guidance on accountable review. It is not a claim that one product prescribes a universal policy-approval process.

Where does human review matter most?
Human review should concentrate on choices with meaningful business or customer consequences, novel logic, and changes that are difficult to reverse. It should not be treated as a ceremonial approval button after every automated check passes.

Before implementation: define the objective and boundaries
A person should state which fraud pattern the change addresses, what data may be used, what outcomes are acceptable, and what trade-offs the business is willing to make between fraud loss and customer friction. The sources establish that the workflow depends on event data and labeled historical information, but they do not prescribe one universal policy process. Teams must set one that fits their governance and operating environment.
At rule design: approve thresholds, exceptions, and actions
Fraud owners should review the logic as a decision policy, not merely as code. They need to see what each condition matches, how the model score is interpreted, which cases are exceptions, and whether the resulting action is proportionate. When an uncertain event can be held for investigation, the team should also decide what information investigators need and how their outcome feeds back into operations.
After automated checks: examine intent and business logic
Tests, linters, and security scanners can catch important classes of problems, but passing them does not establish that the change implements the intended business behavior. AWS Security Blog guidance makes this distinction: scanners cannot determine whether code matches the intended business logic. Reviewers should examine the specification, changed files, test cases, and edge cases together, with added attention to novel or security-sensitive logic.
Before production: require an accountable release decision
The UK Home Office engineering guidance calls for human review and approval before production for AI-assisted code. It is departmental guidance rather than a universal law, but it offers a clear control pattern: make the change traceable, show the reviewer what changed, and require approval before consequential deployment. The approver should be able to reject or revise the change, not merely acknowledge that an agent generated it.
In operations: investigate ambiguity and audit past decisions
Not every evaluation should be forced into an automatic outcome. A review route gives people a way to handle uncertain cases, while retaining evaluation history supports investigation of which model and rules were applied. AWS describes filtering past evaluations by outcome, model, rule, or event metadata. The system owner should determine how review findings are recorded and who can access the associated data.
How should teams choose between rules, model-plus-rules, and review outcomes?
These approaches serve different needs. The right configuration depends on the event data, model evidence, and operational ability to handle exceptions; the examples below describe decision patterns, not universal performance claims.

| Approach | What it does | When to consider it | Key review question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rules only | Applies explicit conditions to event variables without relying on a model score. | When policy can be expressed directly in known conditions or when a clear, deterministic control is needed. | Are the conditions, exceptions, and outcomes complete and appropriate? |
| Model plus rules | Uses a model output alongside event variables, with rules translating those inputs into actions. | When the system is designed to use a model signal as one input to a broader decision. | Does the rule correctly interpret the score and handle boundary and missing-data cases? |
| Automatic action | Applies an outcome without a person reviewing that individual evaluation. | For policy-approved cases where the organization accepts the consequences of automation. | What happens if the rule is wrong, and how will the impact be detected? |
| Send for review | Routes an evaluation to a person rather than resolving it solely through an automated action. | For uncertainty or cases where context and investigation matter. | Can the team handle the resulting queue, and will investigators receive useful context? |
A review path is only useful if it has an owner and a defined outcome. Conversely, routing every low-risk change or case to a person can create reflex approvals or unmanageable queues. AWS Security Blog guidance cautions against sending every low-risk change for human review because routine approvals can weaken the control. Apply review proportionately, concentrating it where consequences, novelty, or uncertainty justify the effort.

Good controls limit what an agent can do, make its work inspectable, and prevent an unreviewed implementation from reaching production. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance and AWS security guidance support using multiple safeguards rather than relying on a single scan or reviewer.
- Use least privilege. Give an agent only the permissions needed for its assigned task. Ordinary coding or review work should not expose production secrets or deployment credentials.
- Isolate execution. Run agent jobs in isolated environments, especially when they process pull-request content or other inputs that may be attacker-controlled.
- Keep the change narrow. Separate unrelated changes so reviewers can understand the scope, compare it with the requirement, and see which tests cover it.
- Protect untrusted inputs. Treat external or contributor-controlled text as data to inspect, not as trusted instructions for the agent or its tools.
- Combine checks. Run deterministic tests and relevant security scans, then have a reviewer assess specification fit, scope, and business logic. Neither automated checks nor human review guarantees correctness.
- Log actions safely. Preserve authorization decisions and useful action metadata for accountability, while protecting secrets and sensitive content in logs.
- Name an accountable owner. Every AI-assisted change needs a human owner who can explain its purpose and preserve a traceable record of review and approval.
- Gate deployment. Keep production authorization separate from ordinary agent execution and require the designated approval before consequential changes go live.
The controls work as a chain. Isolation limits the harm an agent can cause during implementation; testing and scans catch defined failure classes; contextual review checks whether the change is appropriate; and a deployment gate ensures that a person with authority accepts the release. If any layer is missing, the remaining layers should not be presented as a guarantee.

Stripe’s 2026 engineering post, “Scaling Radar: Fighting fraud with agent-assisted machine learning,” describes a vendor case study in which agents investigated fraud-model behavior, proposed and tested experiments, implemented configuration changes, and evaluated results. Stripe says people prioritized 38 ideas while agents handled implementation, training, debugging, and evaluation.
For a controlled comparison of one model-training configuration, Stripe reported recall improved by over 8%. The company estimated that the result translated to tens of millions of dollars a year in additional fraud prevention for its merchants. These figures are Stripe’s reported result and estimate for its described work, not an independently verified market statistic or an expected outcome for another organization.

How can a team put this workflow into practice?
Use an explicit change path that connects the policy decision to its implementation, evidence, and release approval. A small, auditable change is easier to review than a broad request for an agent to “improve fraud detection.”
- Write the human-owned specification. Identify the event and fraud pattern, permitted data, intended outcomes, acceptable trade-offs, edge cases, and which person owns the policy decision.
- Give the agent a bounded implementation task. Ask it to make specified schema, API, rule, test, simulation, or audit-view changes. State what it must not change, particularly production access and policy choices not included in the approved specification.
- Run the work in a constrained environment. Use minimum necessary permissions and isolation appropriate to the inputs. Do not supply ordinary coding work with production secrets or release credentials.
- Require inspectable evidence. Review the diff alongside deterministic tests, relevant scans, and test cases for boundaries, missing inputs, and exceptions. Ask for a clear account of changed behavior rather than accepting a summary in place of the code.
- Have the right owner review the policy behavior. A technically qualified reviewer can assess implementation; a fraud owner should confirm the rule’s intended action and business trade-offs. Add security, privacy, or operational reviewers where the change affects their responsibilities.
- Approve and gate the release. Preserve who reviewed and authorized the change, and deploy only through the established human approval boundary for consequential changes.
- Audit outcomes in operation. Retain sufficient information to investigate evaluations, including the applicable model, rule, and outcome, while controlling access to sensitive data. Use review outcomes to understand uncertain cases and inform future decisions.
This workflow makes the agent a faster way to implement and evaluate a specified change, while keeping decisions about acceptable risk, customer impact, and production authority with accountable people.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a fraud model score explain why an event was flagged?
Not by itself. A score is an input to a decision process; understanding an outcome also requires knowing the event data, the rules applied, and the action associated with those rules.
Should fraud teams use real customer records in agent-generated tests?
Use only data authorized for the task, and avoid exposing sensitive production records to an agent or its logs without a justified, approved need. Test data should still represent the cases the team needs to validate, including boundary and missing-input behavior.
What does recall mean in Stripe’s reported result?
Recall describes how much of the relevant positive set a system identifies; a change in recall is not by itself a measure of customer friction, false positives, or overall business impact. Stripe’s reported figure was tied to one controlled model-training comparison, while its financial impact was an estimate.
Can an AI coding agent deploy a fraud-rule change on its own?
An organization could technically automate deployment, but that does not make it an appropriate approval model for consequential fraud-policy changes. The cited UK Home Office guidance calls for human approval before production, and the article’s safer pattern separates implementation permissions from release authority.
