Plan Bee is a railway-installed sound deterrent that amplifies the buzz of honeybee swarms, while AI-based detection and operating measures can give railway staff time to respond to elephants near tracks. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported elephant-protection totals for this combined approach, but the available reports do not establish that Plan Bee alone saved 255 elephants—or verify the 255 figure’s period, location, or counting method.
What is Plan Bee?
Plan Bee is a sound-based deterrent installed by Northeast Frontier Railway to discourage elephants from approaching railway tracks. A device amplifies the sound of a honeybee swarm, which is intended to prompt elephants to move away from the track area.
In July 2021, India Today reported that the sound from the described device could be heard from about 400 metres. That is a historical report about a particular installation, not a verified current operating range for every Plan Bee unit.
The report identified an early installation at a level crossing between Azara and Kamakhya stations in Rangiya Division. Separately, an Indian Railways magazine reported that another Plan BEE device was commissioned on 7 May 2021 at a level crossing between Nizbargang and Helem stations, also in Rangiya Division. These reports establish examples of railway deployments, not the current number of devices or their effectiveness across all routes.

How do AI alerts and railway procedures work together?
Plan Bee is only one part of a broader effort to reduce train-elephant collisions. NFR has described using AI-based intrusion detection built around Distributed Acoustic System technology to detect elephant movement near tracks and issue alerts. Detection can warn railway staff; operating measures such as speed restrictions and train stoppages can then help create time for a safer crossing.
Other reported measures include track patrols, sensitising train crews, warning signage, vegetation clearance, and coordination with forest officials. A 2026 account described train stoppages coordinated with Assam Forest Department officials to let herds cross and reported underpasses at identified locations. The measures serve different functions: some detect movement, some change railway operations, and some support passage through or across railway corridors.

In practice, an alert is not itself a guarantee that a collision will be prevented. A system’s usefulness depends on timely detection, communication to the people operating trains, appropriate operating decisions, and conditions at the crossing. The reports describe a layered approach, rather than evidence that any single sound deterrent or alert system independently prevents collisions.
Did Plan Bee save 255 elephants?
The specific claim that railways saved 255 elephants from train collisions in the Northeast is not substantiated by the available reports. They do not identify the period, geography, counting method, or intervention behind that number. Without those details, it should not be presented as an established Plan Bee result.

In December 2025, a report quoting NFR’s public relations chief said that more than 160 elephants were protected during 2025, and more than 2,000 had been safely protected while crossing railway tracks across NFR since 2017. The report attributed those outcomes to broader technology-driven efforts that included AI-based intrusion detection, Plan Bee, speed restrictions, and Forest Department coordination—not to Plan Bee alone. The Hindu’s account and The Sentinel’s account both report the 2025 claim; they may draw on the same railway statement, so they are not independent measurements.
A 2021 educational module also repeats a historical estimate of 1,014 elephants saved from 2014 through June 2019 by Plan Bee together with other measures, attributing the figure to journalist Raza Kazmi (2020). It is a secondary estimate, not a Plan Bee-only outcome or a current total. The IGNOU module does not make the different figures directly comparable.

None of these reported totals isolates Plan Bee’s contribution, and no primary evaluation or controlled study establishing its independent effect is identified in these accounts. The figures are best understood as attributed reports about combined prevention efforts, not as proof that a particular device caused a specified number of lives to be saved.

Elephants may cross railway lines outside designated corridors, so focusing protection on a limited set of known crossing points cannot address every encounter. In a 2020 report, The Indian Express cited Assam government data showing 54 elephant deaths in train accidents since 2010. That is a historical, Assam-specific figure reported in 2020, not a current total for the Northeast.

Railway detection and warnings can help staff respond to movement near tracks, while speed restrictions, patrols, crew awareness, and coordination with forest officials address different parts of the risk. Underpasses can provide passage at identified locations, but no measure described in the reporting establishes blanket protection across all elephant crossings. The reports also do not provide comparable performance data that would show which intervention prevents the most collisions.
In 2021, NFR public relations officer Nripendra Bhattacharyya told India Today: “We have been able to save the lives of many elephants at various locations after adopting this technique.” This is the railway spokesperson’s account of the technique, not an independently verified estimate of Plan Bee’s causal effect.
