AI agents are billed for the model work performed across an entire run, not just for the final answer you can see. A single request may trigger several model calls. Each call can resend instructions, conversation history, tool definitions, user files, and tool results as input, while the model generates visible text, hidden reasoning, and tool-selection output. The bill therefore depends on input, cached-input, and output token quantities, the selected model’s current rates, and any applicable tool, compute, runtime, or third-party charges.

Tokens are model-specific pieces of text rather than a fixed number of words. To estimate an agent’s cost, measure every call, separate uncached and cached input from output, multiply each quantity by the provider’s current rate card, then add non-model charges. The method below shows how to do that without mistaking a short final response for a cheap workflow.

What is a token in an AI model?

A token is a unit produced by a model’s tokenizer. It may represent a whole word, part of a word, whitespace, punctuation, or another encoded fragment. Token boundaries vary by model, language, script, and encoding, so “one token equals one word” is not a reliable rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same text can therefore consume different numbers of tokens on different models. Code, long identifiers, tables, JSON, and languages with less common training patterns may tokenize less compactly than ordinary English prose. A file that looks short on screen can still contribute many tokens when its full contents are inserted into a prompt.

Models account separately for tokens they receive and tokens they generate. Providers commonly call these input and output tokens. Some systems expose cached-input tokens as a separate category because an eligible repeated prefix can be priced differently from newly processed input.

How does an AI agent use tokens differently from a chatbot?

A chatbot often makes one model request for a user message and returns one response. An agent is a workflow: it can ask a model what to do, call a tool, feed the tool result back to the model, and repeat until it reaches an answer or completes an action. Every model request in that loop has its own input and output usage.

A typical agent loop

  1. Plan: the model receives the task, system instructions, available tools, and any conversation context, then proposes a next action.
  2. Act: the agent runtime executes a search, API request, code operation, file read, browser action, or other tool.
  3. Observe: the tool result is appended to the task state.
  4. Re-plan: the model receives the updated state and chooses another action or drafts a final response.
  5. Finish: the model produces the user-facing answer, sometimes after additional validation or formatting calls.

If this sequence uses four model calls, the bill is based on the tokens in all four calls. The visible answer may be only the last output, while earlier calls consumed tokens deciding what to do and interpreting results.

What counts as input on each agent call?

Input is everything the model receives for that particular call, not merely the latest sentence typed by the user. Depending on the framework, it can include the following.

  • System and developer instructions that define behavior, safety rules, or output formats.
  • The current user request and earlier conversation turns.
  • Tool definitions, including names, descriptions, parameters, and usage constraints.
  • Files, retrieved documents, database records, web pages, images, or code inserted into context.
  • Previous assistant messages, tool calls, and tool results accumulated during the run.
  • Intermediate state supplied by an orchestrator or a delegated subagent.

That accumulation is why later calls can be more expensive than earlier ones. If every step resends the complete transcript and all previous tool output, the input token count grows even when the user wrote only one short request.

Do reasoning tokens increase an agent’s bill?

They can. Models that generate internal reasoning or other hidden intermediate output may count those generated tokens toward billed output usage, even though the reasoning is not shown in the final answer. A concise visible response does not prove that the model generated only a few output tokens.

Some APIs report visible completion text separately from reasoning or other output categories; others provide a combined output count. Use the provider’s usage fields rather than estimating from character count. If a model’s documentation says reasoning tokens are billable output, include them in the output quantity used in your estimate.

estimated model cost = uncached input tokens × input rate + cached input tokens × cached-input rate + output tokens × output rate

Apply that formula to every model call, then add the calls together. If a provider uses different units, tiers, or categories, convert the usage to the units required by its current pricing table before multiplying.

Step 1: Inventory every model call

Do not count only the request that produced the final answer. Export the run trace or application logs and list calls made by the main agent, evaluators, planners, summarizers, safety checks, and delegated subagents. Retries after timeouts or malformed tool calls are additional calls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Record usage by category

For each call, capture uncached input, cached input when reported, and output. Keep model names and dates with the records because rates and usage fields can change. If a usage field is missing or marked unknown, treat it as unknown rather than as zero.

Step 3: Apply current model rates

Look up the selected model’s current input, cached-input, and output rates in the provider’s official pricing documentation. Rates are model- and feature-specific and can change, so an estimate made from an old rate card may no longer describe the actual bill.

Step 4: Add non-model charges

Include charges that are billed outside token processing when they apply: tool usage, hosted containers, code execution, runtime duration, storage, retrieval, or a third-party API called by the agent. Do not add a category merely because it exists in a provider’s catalog; confirm that the workflow actually used it.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose a three-call workflow records 18,000 uncached input tokens, 7,000 cached input tokens, and 4,000 output tokens in total. Its model estimate is:

If the run also invokes a metered container and a paid external search API, add those line items separately. This example demonstrates the method only; it does not represent a typical token volume or a universal price.

How does prompt caching change the calculation?

Prompt caching can reduce the charge for repeated, eligible input. A stable prefix—such as long system instructions or tool definitions—may be recognized on a later call and billed at a cached-input rate instead of the regular input rate.

Cache behavior is provider- and model-specific. Documentation may define minimum prefix lengths, write charges, read charges, expiration windows, or which portions of a prompt qualify. A persistent conversation or session does not by itself guarantee that a cache hit will occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For estimates, separate the tokens actually reported as cached from newly processed input. If the API does not expose cache status, use the ordinary input rate for a conservative estimate or label the result as uncertain; do not assume savings that telemetry cannot confirm.

Why can a long-running agent become unexpectedly expensive?

Several cost drivers compound in agent workflows.

Growing context

Each turn can carry forward the complete history plus new tool results. Large documents, verbose logs, screenshots, and repeated instructions increase input tokens on later calls.

Many planning cycles

An agent that takes ten small actions may make far more model calls than one that completes the task in three actions. More calls multiply both fixed instructions and accumulated context.

Retries and recovery

Timeouts, invalid parameters, rate limits, and failed tool results can trigger automatic retries. A retry often resends much of the same context and therefore consumes additional tokens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delegated work

An orchestrator may delegate subtasks to one or more other models. Those subagents have their own input and output usage, and their results may then be sent back to the parent agent for another call.

Expensive output

Long drafts, code generation, structured JSON, and hidden reasoning can produce substantial output usage even when the initial prompt is short.

Non-token services

Tool calls, hosted compute, container time, runtime, storage, and third-party services can add fees that are not represented by token counts. A token-only estimate is incomplete when the workflow uses those services.

Which usage information should I monitor?

Instrument the workflow at the individual-call level and aggregate it at the run level. A useful record contains:

  • Run ID, timestamp, model, and provider.
  • Input, cached-input, and output token counts.
  • Whether output includes a separately reported reasoning category.
  • Tool calls, retries, delegated calls, and their durations.
  • Container, runtime, retrieval, and third-party service charges.
  • Final task outcome, so cost can be compared with successful completion rather than raw activity.

Agent observability systems may show a usage field as null when the value is not yet known or cannot be recorded. That is an accounting limitation, not evidence that the call consumed no tokens. Usage aggregation can also change as a run finishes, so finalize reports after all asynchronous work has completed.

How should I compare models or providers for an agent?

Compare the whole workflow economics, not one headline token rate. The following axes reveal where apparent savings can disappear.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Input and output rates What are the current prices for the selected model’s input and output categories?
Cached input Is repeated input eligible, what are the minimums, and are cache writes or reads charged differently?
Context handling How large is the context window, and how much history or tool output will be resent on each step?
Telemetry Are per-call, cached, reasoning, retry, and delegated usage fields exposed?
Additional services Are tools, runtime, containers, retrieval, or third-party integrations billed separately?
Task success Does the model complete the task with fewer calls and retries, or does a cheaper call require more supervision?

A lower per-token rate is not automatically a lower cost per completed task. A model that needs extra planning calls, repairs, or retries can use more total tokens than a higher-priced model that succeeds in fewer calls.

How can I reduce an agent’s token and service costs?

  • Keep stable instructions stable and early: this improves the chance that an eligible prefix can be cached.
  • Trim repeated context: summarize completed tool output and remove obsolete history instead of resending it indefinitely.
  • Constrain tool results: request only the fields and rows needed for the next decision.
  • Set stopping conditions: cap iterations, retries, and delegated subtasks, with a clear escalation path when the cap is reached.
  • Route simple work to a smaller model: reserve a more capable model for decisions that genuinely need it.
  • Validate tool arguments before execution: catching malformed calls locally avoids a failed call and a corrective model turn.
  • Measure success-adjusted cost: track cost per completed task, not just cost per request or per token.
  • Review non-token invoices: container minutes, external APIs, and runtime can dominate a workflow even when token usage looks modest.

What are the most common estimation mistakes?

Counting visible words

Words, characters, and displayed response length are only rough proxies. Tokenization varies by model and content type, and hidden reasoning may be billable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring earlier calls

The final response is often the last of several calls. Excluding planning, tool-selection, or evaluator calls understates usage.

Is there a typical AI-agent token count or cost?

There is no single reliable average that applies across agents. A short, single-step classifier, a research agent that reads large files, and a coding agent that retries tool calls have fundamentally different call counts and context sizes.

Use measured traces from your own workload whenever possible. Report the model, date, task definition, call count, token categories, and additional services alongside any cost figure so readers can understand what the number does—and does not—represent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an agent be charged when it returns an error?

Yes. A failed tool call, timeout, validation attempt, or retry may still involve a model request and therefore consume tokens. Check the provider’s usage records and your runtime or third-party invoices rather than assuming an unsuccessful run was free.

Does streaming a response reduce token charges?

Streaming changes how output is delivered to your application, not necessarily how many tokens the model generates. Billing normally follows the recorded input and output quantities, so compare usage fields rather than transport mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I budget for tool calls separately from model tokens?

Yes, when the tool or service has its own meter. Search, code execution, containers, storage, runtime, and external APIs may each follow different pricing rules, and some workflows use none of them while others rely on several.

Why did two identical prompts produce different costs?

An agent may choose a different number of steps, produce different-length reasoning or output, receive different tool results, or retry one call. Cache hits can also vary with prefix eligibility and cache lifetime, so identical user text does not guarantee identical total usage.
