A discarded LCD monitor can be repurposed as a display mounted in a PC case window: remove the monitor’s backlight and extra hardware, feed the remaining panel video from the graphics card, and use LEDs inside the case to illuminate it from behind. The result can show an image while leaving some of the computer’s internals visible—but it is a delicate, build-specific mod, not a plug-and-play upgrade.
What the LCD case-window mod is
Hackaday documented the project in an article published June 30, 2022. The featured builder adapted a monitor taken from a trash pile, removing its backlight and other hardware so the LCD panel could sit at a computer case window. The seasonal phrase “this summer” belongs to that 2022 headline; the article does not establish that the mod is a current trend.
The display’s appearance depends on the salvaged panel and its remaining optical layers, how it is mounted, the case window, and the light inside the computer. Hackaday described the visual effect as compelling and better in motion than in photographs, while reporting the builder’s iterations rather than an independent test. The builder’s enthusiastic reaction to the result is not a cost estimate or a verified valuation of the finished build.
How the display works
- Start with a donor monitor. The project repurposes the LCD panel from an old monitor; it does not identify a specific model.
- Remove the backlight and extra hardware. The remaining panel is used as the case-window display. Disassembly and removal of the anti-glare coating can damage the delicate LCD.
- Mount the panel at the case window. The exact mounting method and case dimensions are not specified, so fit must be worked out for the individual build.
- Connect a video signal. The panel receives video from the graphics card. The article does not name a controller or signal interface, so compatibility cannot be inferred from the source.
- Illuminate it from inside the case. LEDs behind the panel provide illumination while allowing some of the PC’s internal components to remain visible through it.
What to assess before attempting one
- Panel fit: Compare the panel’s physical dimensions with the case window and available mounting space.
- Signal compatibility: Identify what controller and video interface the particular panel requires, and whether the intended graphics-card connection can support it. The documented article provides no model-specific compatibility guidance.
- Optical layers and visibility: The panel’s layers, the case window, and internal lighting affect both the image and how much of the computer remains visible. A conventional case window can dull the effect.
- Disassembly risk: Monitor teardown and anti-glare coating removal are delicate. The article does not provide a safe disassembly procedure, so it should not be treated as a risk-free beginner project.
If sourcing parts, “used LCD monitor” is a reasonable donor-panel search phrase, not a recommendation for any particular model. Check the individual panel, controller needs, physical fit, and desired visibility before committing to a build.

What the source does—and does not—establish
The Hackaday article identifies the basic concept and its visual appeal, but supplies no donor monitor model, panel size, controller, interface, case dimensions, or reproducible bill of materials. It also offers no current popularity data. The creator’s June 26, 2022 post called the result a “700 dollar case upgrade”; that was the creator’s reaction, not a verified price or valuation.
