Yes, one beginner can assemble a substantial Telegram bot with AI assistance—but the hard part is managing the project, not asking a model to print code. In the first-person DEV Community account behind this article, the author started with no programming experience and, over several months of part-time work, built a habit tracker with scheduling, encrypted data handling, PostgreSQL storage, payments, six-language localization and automatic charts. The author describes the project as having thousands of lines, although no independent line-count check is provided.
The useful lesson is a workflow: assign different jobs to different models, keep the code modular, make one change at a time, test small pieces, back up before edits and roll back aggressively when an AI-generated change breaks something. The result is a learning account, not proof that a novice can reliably ship secure, production-ready software without review.
What did the beginner actually build?
The author describes a Telegram habit-tracking bot developed from scratch over a few months while working part time. Users could manage habits and receive scheduled reminders; the project also generated charts, stored data in PostgreSQL, accepted payments and offered six languages through JSON localization files.
The phrase “thousands of lines” comes from the article’s title and characterization. The account does not publish a precise count, repository, independent code review or user-adoption figures. Treat the scope as the author’s report of what they assembled, not as a verified benchmark of AI coding or Telegram-bot reliability.

The author also mentions encryption, but the account does not establish a security audit, threat model, key-management design or compliance review. Those omissions matter if you are deciding whether a similar bot is suitable for sensitive or paid workloads.
Can you build a Telegram bot with AI if you have no coding experience?
You can make meaningful progress, but you still need to learn enough programming to inspect structure, identify assumptions and verify behavior. The author’s experience suggests that AI lowers the barrier to writing individual functions; it does not remove the need to understand how those functions interact.
What the author knew at the start
The author says they had never programmed before and had never built a Telegram bot. They learned by asking models to explain concepts, generate small pieces and help connect those pieces. This is a personal account rather than evidence that every novice will reach the same result or timeline.
Why a working prototype is different from dependable software
A model can produce plausible Python quickly, yet plausibility is not correctness. Telegram update handling, asynchronous code, database transactions, payment callbacks, scheduled jobs and localization all create failure paths that may not appear during a happy-path demonstration. A bot that responds in a private test chat is not automatically secure, resilient or ready for many users.
Use AI as an accelerator for learning and implementation. Keep responsibility for requirements, secrets, permissions, data retention, error handling and deployment decisions with the human builder.
Which AI tools did the author use, and how were the jobs divided?
The author reports trying ChatGPT, Grok, Mistral, Gemini, Qwen and DeepSeek. Later, they settled on a division of labor in which Claude handled architecture and planning, Qwen produced most implementation code and Gemini provided a second look at code or features.
| Role in the reported workflow | Model named by the author | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture and planning | Claude | The author used it to outline modules, data flows and implementation steps. |
| Main implementation | Qwen | The author says it generated most of the working code. |
| Secondary review | Gemini | Used for another pass over code or a proposed feature. |
This table describes personal assignments, not a ranking. The article supplies no controlled comparison, accuracy rate or benchmark showing that one model is objectively best for a role. Models change frequently, so reproduce the process rather than assuming these exact assignments will remain optimal.

Why multiple models helped
Separating planning from implementation gave the author a way to ask for a design before requesting code and to obtain a fresh perspective when a feature looked suspicious. It also reduced the temptation to keep one endlessly growing conversation responsible for the entire project.
Why multiple models did not eliminate mistakes
Each model can misunderstand the current code, invent an API, omit an import or silently change an assumption made elsewhere. A second model may catch some problems, but it can also introduce a different interpretation. Human tests and a known-good backup remain the deciding checks.
What programming stack went into the Telegram habit tracker?
The stack evolved as the project outgrew its first storage approach. The author began with Google Sheets and later moved persistent data to PostgreSQL hosted through Supabase. The remaining components were chosen around a Python Telegram bot.
| Layer | Reported technology | Purpose in the project |
|---|---|---|
| Language/runtime | Python 3.11+ | Application logic and integrations. |
| Telegram interface | aiogram 3.x | Commands, callback handlers and message flows. |
| Persistence | PostgreSQL on Supabase | Users, habits, completion data and related records. |
| Scheduled work | APScheduler | Reminder and notification jobs. |
| Reporting | matplotlib | Generated progress charts. |
| Payments | Paddle SDK | Payment-related integration described by the author. |
| Translations | JSON files | Six-language interface text. |
The account does not specify deployment hosting, database schema, payment geography, subscription terms or operational monitoring. Those details must be designed separately for a real service.

How did the author organize a codebase that kept growing?
The author says context and maintenance became difficult after the project passed roughly 1,000 lines. To keep the main file below about 2,000 lines, they split the application into modules of approximately 200–700 lines. These figures are author-reported and not independently measured.
Separate responsibilities before they become tangled
The reported layout placed Telegram handlers apart from database functions, notification scheduling, button definitions and localization. A comparable arrangement might look like this:
- Handlers: receive commands, messages and callback queries, then call application functions.
- Database layer: owns connections, queries and transaction boundaries rather than scattering SQL through handlers.
- Notifications: defines scheduled jobs and the conditions under which reminders are sent.
- Buttons and conversation UI: keeps inline keyboards and callback identifiers consistent.
- Localization: retrieves text from language files instead of embedding translations throughout business logic.
The exact filenames are less important than stable boundaries. When a model edits a reminder, it should not need to rewrite payment code or translation dictionaries to make the change.

Give every feature a narrow contract
Before asking for code, describe inputs, outputs, error cases and the modules allowed to change. For example, a “mark habit complete” function might accept a user ID and habit ID, reject records belonging to another user, write one completion event and return a small status object. This constraint gives you something concrete to test and makes an AI response easier to review.
What happened when the project grew beyond 1,000 lines?
The author reports three related problems: model context loss, hallucinated answers and broken code. Early prompts could include most of the application; later prompts could not reliably carry every dependency, convention and recent change.
Context loss
When a model no longer sees a file or an earlier decision, it may recreate a function with a different name, assume a table column that does not exist or duplicate logic already present elsewhere. The practical response is to maintain a short project brief: directory tree, entry points, database tables, environment variables, coding conventions and known constraints. Include only the relevant files in each request.
Hallucinated APIs
Generated code may call a library method that sounds reasonable but is absent from the installed version. Ask the model to target your exact package version, then verify every unfamiliar call against the package documentation or your editor’s type hints. Run a minimal example before wiring the call into a larger feature.
Broken cross-module changes
A seemingly local edit can alter an import, callback name or database assumption used elsewhere. Request a file-by-file change plan first, then apply the smallest patch that can be tested. If the change touches unrelated modules, split it into separate tasks.

The reported workflow is deliberately conservative: back up files before modifications, implement one feature at a time, test functions and roll back when a change damages working behavior.
- Define one observable outcome. State what a user should be able to do and what should happen on invalid input.
- Ask for a plan before code. Require the model to list affected modules, database changes, dependencies and risks.
- Save a known-good version. Copy the files or create a version-control commit before accepting edits.
- Apply a small change. Avoid replacing an entire project when one handler or function is enough.
- Run focused tests. Exercise the changed function, then test the Telegram flow that calls it.
- Inspect the diff. Look for deleted validation, changed SQL, new secrets, altered callback names and unrelated formatting churn.
- Roll back quickly. If the behavior regresses and the cause is unclear, restore the last working version instead of stacking more generated fixes.
This process turns a model from an uncontrolled code generator into a participant in a repeatable change cycle. It also preserves a recovery path when an explanation sounds convincing but the program disagrees.

How were scheduling, charts, payments and six languages added safely?
Each integration introduces its own state and failure modes, so it should be treated as a separate milestone rather than folded into the first prototype.
Scheduling with APScheduler
Define what happens when the bot is offline, a reminder is missed, a user changes time zones or a job runs twice. Store enough information to identify the user and habit, and make the reminder operation idempotent so a retry does not create duplicate records or messages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPostgreSQL after Google Sheets
A migration is more than changing a connection string. Map each sheet column to a typed database field, decide which values are required, import a copy first and compare record counts and sample records. Add constraints for ownership and uniqueness before exposing the new path to users.
Automatic charts with matplotlib
Charts require clear definitions: the date range, treatment of missed days, time zone, empty-data behavior and image delivery method. Test a new user with no completions, a user with one completion and a long history so the report does not fail on edge cases.
Payments through an SDK
Payment callbacks must be verified, replay-safe and separated from granting access based solely on a client-supplied message. The source account names the SDK but does not document its checkout configuration, webhook verification or regulatory handling, so those details cannot be inferred from the project description.
JSON localization in six languages
Keep translation keys stable and test every key in every language. Avoid constructing sentences by joining fragments whose grammar changes between languages; use complete message templates with named variables, and provide a fallback when a translation is missing.

It signals that the project was larger than a short tutorial, not that line count equals quality. More lines can reflect legitimate features, duplicated logic, generated boilerplate or unfinished experiments. The author’s reported thresholds—difficulty after about 1,000 lines, a main file kept under roughly 2,000 and modules around 200–700 lines—are useful maintenance observations, not universal limits.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Measure progress by behavior and maintainability instead: Can a new contributor locate the reminder logic? Can you change a database field without breaking handlers? Do tests detect a duplicate notification? Does a failed payment leave access unchanged? Those questions reveal more than a raw count.
What can beginners copy from this build, and what should they not assume?
Copy the habits, not the outcome guarantee. Start with a tiny bot that responds to one command, then add persistence, reminders, reports, localization and payments as independent increments. Keep a written map of the project and learn enough Python, asynchronous programming, SQL and Telegram concepts to challenge an answer that looks wrong.
- Reasonable expectation: AI can explain syntax, draft repetitive code and help you explore unfamiliar libraries.
- Unreasonable expectation: AI will remember an entire growing codebase, choose secure defaults and test every integration without direction.
- Minimum discipline: versioned backups, focused tests, secret management and a rollback plan.
- Evidence boundary: this account does not prove security, reliability, commercial success or model superiority.
The author’s closing lesson is concise: “AI replaces a team for simple tasks, but you must understand the project structure.” That is the author’s opinion from this build, not a consensus or a promise that a novice can replace an engineering team.
What is the practical starting plan for your own AI-assisted Telegram project?
A staged plan keeps the learning curve and failure surface manageable.
- Write the smallest user story: one user creates a habit and marks it complete.
- Create the skeleton: configure Python, aiogram, environment variables and a single handler.
- Add a persistence boundary: implement one database function and test it independently of Telegram updates.
- Introduce scheduling: send one reminder at a controlled interval before handling time zones and recurring rules.
- Add reporting: generate a chart from known test data, including an empty dataset.
- Localize: move text into JSON and test missing keys and variable substitution.
- Integrate payments last: design webhook verification, entitlement state and refund behavior before enabling checkout.
- Document every decision: update the project brief whenever a table, module contract or command changes.
At each stage, keep the previous stage working. That makes an AI-assisted project educational even when the next experiment fails, because you can identify which change introduced the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the author publish the bot’s source code or an independently verified line count?
The account described in the DEV Community article does not provide an independently checked line count or a code-review report. Its claims should therefore be read as a personal build narrative rather than a reproducible measurement.
Is a Telegram habit tracker with payments safe to launch unchanged?
No conclusion about launch safety follows from the account. A real deployment needs security review, secret handling, webhook verification, privacy and retention policies, monitoring, backups and tests for failures that the article does not document.
Recommended Free Tools
How should a beginner keep AI prompts from becoming unmanageable?
Maintain a compact project brief with the directory tree, schemas, entry points, conventions and current task. Send only the files relevant to that task, and ask for a patch or explicit diff instead of a full regenerated application.
What should I learn before asking AI to build my first bot?
Learn basic Python control flow, functions, exceptions, asynchronous concepts, SQL fundamentals and how Telegram updates and callbacks work. That foundation lets you recognize an invented API, inspect a query and test whether generated code matches the intended behavior.
