YouTomb was a research and watchdog project built by MIT Free Culture to document what happened when monitored YouTube videos became unavailable, particularly when copyright enforcement was involved. Presented at The Last HOPE on July 20, 2008, it recorded video metadata and status changes rather than hosting removed clips. Its dataset offered examples for examining takedowns and possible mistakes—not a representative measure of all YouTube videos.

What was YouTomb?

YouTomb was created by MIT Free Culture, a student group, as a project to study YouTube’s copyright-enforcement process. It monitored selected popular and otherwise discoverable videos, preserving available metadata such as the complaint source when known and how long a video had been available before it was taken down. The project aimed to understand how YouTube identified potential copyright violations and to aggregate cases that might reflect mistakes. MIT Free Culture’s archived project page and FAQ describe its goals and monitoring limits.

The project was presented at The Last HOPE conference in New York. The 2600 Magazine listing identifies the session as Sunday, July 20, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. in the Hopper room, hosted by Oliver Day, Dean Jansen, Quentin Smith, and Christina Xu. 2600’s listing for the HOPE 2008 recording is an archival lead; whether the recording is currently available has not been verified.

How did YouTomb track videos?

Rather than capture every upload, the team found candidate videos through popular-video lists and other web sources, then checked their status repeatedly. A contemporaneous Hackaday account describes separate discovery and scanner scripts and a public MySQL snapshot; those are details reported at the time, not confirmation of what remains accessible today. Hackaday’s July 25, 2008 report describes that implementation.

YouTomb documented traces of videos, not the videos themselves. MIT Free Culture’s page says visitors could not watch or download banned clips through the site. Dean Jansen, identified by WIRED as a project creator, put the distinction plainly: “Banned clips aren’t available for viewing or download on YouTomb — that’s not the purpose of the site.” WIRED’s May 20, 2008 report carries the quotation. The project page also describes its source code as licensed under AGPL 3. MIT Free Culture’s archived description provides those access and licensing details.

What do the reported counts show?

Contemporary articles recorded different snapshots at different times. They should be read as dated reports about YouTomb’s monitored set, not combined into a single definitive total or treated as current measurements.

Publisher and date Reported snapshot
TechCrunch, May 20, 2008 177,000 monitored videos and 4,394 alleged copyright removals.
Hackaday, July 25, 2008 A little more than 282,000 tracked videos.
The Tech, September 9, 2008 A quarter of a million popular videos.

These figures describe coverage at particular moments, and the May report’s removal count is explicitly an allegation count. They do not establish YouTube-wide prevalence or a project-wide rate of wrongful takedowns.

Why wasn’t the dataset representative?

YouTomb’s archived FAQ says it monitored top videos, videos mentioned in selected parts of the web, and other sources—and explicitly states, “We don’t have a random sample.” That selection method means its records could help surface examples and patterns within the videos it followed, but cannot establish how often removals happened across all of YouTube. The archived FAQ explains the sampling limitation.

Availability also had more than one possible explanation. The project considered geographic blocks and other reasons a video might not be accessible; being unavailable alone does not prove a copyright takedown. Likewise, a takedown allegation is not a legal finding that a video infringed copyright. The Tech’s contemporary account discusses the project’s censorship concerns, while the archived FAQ describes its scope and limits. The Tech, September 9, 2008; MIT Free Culture’s archived FAQ.

Why did YouTomb matter?

In 2008, copyright complaints and automated matching raised concerns that enforcement could affect lawful or innocuous material, including fair use. YouTomb made some consequences more visible by keeping records about selected videos after they disappeared and providing resources for people who believed their videos had been wrongly removed. Its purpose was to investigate the process, not to declare every flagged video lawful or every takedown mistaken. MIT Free Culture’s archived project page frames its watchdog role and says the project did not condone illegal activity.

The project’s historical FAQ suggested that a user who believed a video had been wrongfully taken down could file a DMCA counter-claim. That is a description of guidance offered at the time, not current legal advice; the right response to a copyright notice depends on the specific case.
