For a smart display you can choose today, Google’s Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the more concrete option; HomePad is still a reported Apple product, not a confirmed retail device. Reports describe a screen, speaker and Siri-focused smart-home features, but Apple has not confirmed final specifications, pricing or availability in the sources available as of October 4, 2026. If you use Apple Home and can wait, compare again after Apple publishes the product details. If you need a screen now, assess available displays against your devices and household routines.
What is HomePad, and what is actually known?
“HomePad” is an informal name used in news coverage for a prospective Apple smart-home display. A September 30, 2026 report from 9to5Mac, attributing details to Bloomberg, says an introduction is expected October 13 and describes a roughly 6-inch screen with a design inspired by the iMac G4. It also reports tabletop and wall-mounted forms, a speaker, and new software drawing on iOS, tvOS and watchOS. These details are reported, not Apple-confirmed specifications.
A second 9to5Mac report dated September 21, 2026, also relaying Bloomberg reporting, describes a home screen with widgets and clock faces, connected-device controls, video calling, intercom, media, Apple services and apps, and iPhone-assisted setup. None of these reported capabilities should be treated as confirmed or independently tested. The cited reports do not establish a final price, a retail listing, or hands-on performance.

Choose a Nest Hub if you need a display now
Google presents the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) as a display for routines and household controls. Its product page describes a Sunrise Alarm that gradually brightens the display and raises alarm volume, smart-home actions such as turning off lights and locking doors, and Sleep Sensing with personalized insights and tips. These are manufacturer-described features, not a head-to-head performance verdict against HomePad.

Google also says users can switch off the microphone using its switch and clear Assistant history. Those controls may matter if the display will sit in a bedroom or shared space. Check that the devices and services you plan to use work with Google’s system before choosing it.
Consider HomePod mini if Apple Home matters more than a screen
HomePod mini is a current Apple-home reference point, but it is a speaker, not a smart display. Apple says, “HomePod mini can also act as a home hub, letting you control your HomeKit and Matter-enabled accessories remotely.” Apple also lists Siri, voice recognition, temperature and humidity sensing, Sound Recognition and privacy protections on its HomePod mini product page. These manufacturer statements do not establish that a reported HomePad will have identical capabilities.

Wait for confirmed HomePad details if you want an Apple screen
If a screen, Apple services and Siri in a single home device are important to you, the reported HomePad concept may be relevant. But do not base a purchase decision on the reported 6-inch size, expected introduction date or proposed features as if Apple had confirmed them. Wait for Apple’s published specifications, local availability and pricing, then check accessory compatibility and the particular functions you need.
How to make the decision
- List your existing devices and accessories. Identify whether your household primarily uses Apple Home or Google Home, and confirm compatibility for each light, lock, camera or other accessory you expect to control. Apple documents HomePod mini control for HomeKit and Matter accessories; HomePad compatibility remains unconfirmed.
- Decide whether a screen is essential. HomePod mini has no display. Nest Hub is an existing screen-based choice. HomePad’s display and reported wall or tabletop forms remain provisional, so do not compare screen quality or placement dimensions yet.
- Match features to routines. For example, Google specifically describes bedside routines, Sunrise Alarm and Sleep Sensing on Nest Hub. Treat HomePad calls, widgets, media and connected-device controls as reported functions until Apple confirms them.
- Review the privacy controls you will actually use. Google documents a microphone switch and a way to clear Assistant history for Nest Hub. Apple describes privacy protections for HomePod mini; do not assume that this establishes the controls or data handling of a future display.
- Set your timing. If you need a documented product now, compare currently listed displays and confirm local stock. If you can wait for an Apple screen, revisit the decision after Apple publishes its specifications and availability rather than relying on launch reporting.
Verdict: the better choice depends on timing and ecosystem
There is not enough confirmed information to name HomePad the winner over existing smart displays. For a documented display now, Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has manufacturer-described routines, smart-home actions and privacy controls. For an Apple household that wants Siri and remote HomeKit or Matter control but does not need a screen, HomePod mini is a distinct alternative. HomePad may become the closer Apple-versus-display comparison if Apple confirms the reported device and features; until then, choose based on what you can verify and use today.
