The Homelite HBLT25CD is a 26 cm³ petrol, two-stroke grass trimmer with a wide 432 mm swath and 2.4 mm line. It is light enough for routine lawn edging, but starting and upkeep are hands-on: you must mix fuel at 50:1, use the primer and choke correctly, clean the foam filter, and maintain the plug and cutting head. Owner feedback is mixed rather than conclusive: ProductReview.com.au shows 2.7/5 from 12 reviews, including repeated complaints about difficult hot restarting. It makes the most sense as a budget machine for owners prepared to do their own maintenance, not as a fit-and-forget professional tool.

What is the Homelite HBLT25CD?

The HBLT25CD is a petrol line trimmer built around a 26 cm³ two-stroke engine. Its manual lists a 432 mm cutting swath, 2.4 mm line, a 250 cm³ fuel tank, 0.80 kW maximum engine performance, 0.65 kW rated performance and a maximum spindle speed of 12,000 min⁻¹. The published operator-position sound pressure is 93.8 dB(A), so hearing protection is part of the normal operating kit rather than an optional extra.

The model is aimed at domestic grass and weed trimming where a large cutting width reduces passes. It is not documented here as a brush-cutter system, and the manual says not to fit attachments that Homelite has not specified. Treat it as a line-trimmer package unless the exact machine and approved attachment list say otherwise.

Published specifications

Specification HBLT25CD figure What it means in use
Engine 26 cm³, two-stroke petrol Requires petrol mixed with synthetic two-stroke oil
Maximum engine performance 0.80 kW Peak figure in the manual, not a continuous workload rating
Rated performance 0.65 kW Lower stated operating figure
Cutting swath 432 mm Wide line path for covering open lawn edges quickly
Line diameter 2.4 mm Use this diameter unless an approved head specifies otherwise
Fuel-tank capacity 250 cm³ Small tank; mix only the amount you can use before storage
Maximum spindle speed 12,000 min⁻¹ Keep the head, guard and line balanced and undamaged
Weight 4.30 kg without fuel, cutting attachment or harness; 4.4 kg without fuel and harness, with cutting attachment Actual carried weight depends on the fitted head and fuel
Operator sound pressure 93.8 dB(A) Wear hearing protection and limit exposure time

The two weight figures use different configurations, so they are not contradictory: one excludes the cutting attachment, while the other includes it. Neither includes fuel or a harness.

How does the HBLT25CD perform on ordinary trimming?

On paper, the combination of a 432 mm swath and 2.4 mm line favors fast work along lawn borders, around fences and through ordinary grass. The 26 cm³ engine is a domestic-scale power unit; the manual’s 0.65 kW rated figure should not be read as evidence that it will maintain maximum speed in dense brush. Actual results depend on grass thickness, line length, operator technique and how clean the air and fuel systems are.

The wide head can reduce the number of passes, but it also demands more clearance. A longer arc can strike stones, edging, wire or garden ornaments with greater reach. Clear the area first and let the line-cutting blade on the guard trim excess line to the intended length; running overlong line increases load and risk.

Noise and handling

At 93.8 dB(A) operator sound pressure, the HBLT25CD is loud enough that hearing protection should be worn for every session. The 4.4 kg configuration excludes fuel and the harness, so a filled machine will weigh more. Take breaks, use the supplied support equipment as designed and keep both hands on the controls when the head is rotating.

What fuel and oil does the HBLT25CD use?

The manual specifies a 50:1 mixture of gasoline and synthetic two-stroke lubricant. It specifically warns against automotive two-stroke oil and outboard two-stroke oil. Using the wrong oil or an incorrect ratio can cause poor running, smoke, plug fouling or engine damage.

50:1 mixing examples

Gasoline Synthetic two-stroke oil Use
1 litre 20 ml Small fresh batch
2 litres 40 ml Several short sessions
5 litres 100 ml Only if you will use it promptly and store it safely

These quantities are the mathematical 50:1 ratio. Measure oil accurately, add it to an approved fuel container, add the gasoline, seal the container and mix by gently agitating it. Do not mix fuel in the trimmer’s tank, do not guess by eye and do not leave a large batch sitting for an extended period. Refuel with the engine stopped and cool, outdoors and away from ignition sources.

How do you start a cold HBLT25CD?

A cold start uses the primer bulb, choke and recoil starter. The exact control positions and sequence are those shown by the labels on your machine and in the operator manual; forcing the recoil or repeatedly pumping without following that sequence can flood the engine.

  1. Move the trimmer to a clear, level area with the cutting head away from people, pets and objects.
  2. Check that the fuel is the correct fresh 50:1 gasoline/synthetic-oil mixture and that the fuel cap is secure.
  3. Use the primer bulb and choke as specified for a cold engine.
  4. Hold the machine securely and pull the recoil starter in controlled strokes until the engine fires, then return the choke to the running position as directed.
  5. Allow the engine to settle before squeezing the throttle. If the head continues rotating after you release the trigger, stop the engine and investigate before trimming.

Do not wrap the starter cord around your hand, start with the head touching the ground or start in an enclosed shed. If the engine has already been running, use the warm-start position rather than repeating a full cold-start procedure.

Why is the HBLT25CD hard to start once it has been running?

Hot-start difficulty is a known owner complaint, but the available evidence is anecdotal rather than a controlled fault study. One ProductReview.com.au reviewer, Luke b (VIC), wrote: “You get what you pay for – For a cheaper model, it’s lasted almost 6 years. I agree that it’s hard to start once it’s been going for awhile but for me, that’s only been in the last year or so.” That experience should guide your inspection, not be treated as a diagnosis for every machine.

Warm-start troubleshooting

  • Confirm the mixture. Old, contaminated or incorrectly mixed fuel can make a hot restart unreliable. Drain questionable fuel safely and prepare a correct fresh batch.
  • Check the air filter. A dirty foam element restricts air. Clean it as described below, let it dry completely and lightly oil it before refitting.
  • Inspect the spark plug. The specified plug is a TORCH L7RTC. Replace it annually for best maintenance practice, or sooner if it is damaged or fouled. Do not improvise a gap or substitute without checking the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Use the warm-start control position. A choke setting intended for a cold engine can flood a warm one. Follow the labels and manual sequence rather than adding repeated primer strokes.
  • Stop if the head behaves abnormally. A head that keeps turning when the trigger is released is a safety fault, not a starting adjustment. Stop using the machine until it is corrected.

If these checks do not restore starting, the fault may involve fuel delivery, ignition, compression or a carburettor adjustment. Those repairs require model-specific service information; do not defeat the guard or bypass safety controls to keep working.

What should you do when an HBLT25CD will not start at all?

Work through the simple checks before dismantling anything. Keep the ignition and cutting head away from your body, and let the engine cool before removing covers or servicing it.

  1. Verify that the stop switch is in the run position and that the throttle is released for starting.
  2. Check the tank for the correct fuel mixture. If the fuel smells stale or the ratio is uncertain, replace it with a measured batch.
  3. Look for a loose fuel cap, damaged fuel line, leaking primer bulb or obvious blockage.
  4. Clean and correctly reinstall the foam air filter.
  5. Remove and inspect the TORCH L7RTC plug only with the engine cool. Replace a damaged or heavily fouled plug; use the specified installation details from the manual.
  6. Retry the correct cold- or warm-start sequence. If the plug is wet after repeated attempts, stop adding fuel and allow the machine to clear according to the manual rather than continuing to pull the recoil.

Persistent failure after these checks is a service issue. Record whether the engine is cold or hot, whether it fires briefly, and whether the head turns; those observations help a qualified technician without encouraging unsafe trial-and-error.

How do you clean and maintain the HBLT25CD?

Routine maintenance is central to reliable starting and power. Stop the engine, let it cool and disconnect the spark-plug lead before cleaning or servicing. Keep fuel away from flames and dispose of old mixture according to local rules.

Foam air filter

  1. Remove the filter cover and foam element according to the manual.
  2. Wash the foam in warm soapy water; do not use gasoline as a cleaning solvent.
  3. Rinse if necessary and allow the element to dry completely.
  4. Apply a light coat of suitable filter oil, then squeeze out excess rather than leaving the foam saturated.
  5. Refit the element and cover securely. Replace the filter if it is torn or permanently damaged.

The manual says replacing the filter at least once a year gives best performance. Dusty sites may require more frequent cleaning even if the calendar interval has not elapsed.

Spark plug

The specified plug is TORCH L7RTC, with annual replacement advised. Inspect it with the engine cool, keep dirt out of the plug opening and use the manual’s tightening and gap instructions. The available data does not establish an alternative plug number or a plug-gap value, so do not substitute a figure from another trimmer.

Cutting head, guard and fasteners

Before every session, inspect the line head, retaining hardware, guard and line-cutting blade. Replace cracked or badly worn parts, ensure the guard is fitted and keep the blade sharp enough to cut excess line safely. Never fit an attachment Homelite has not specified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fuel and storage

Use only the specified mixture, keep the container clearly identified and avoid storing fuel in an unapproved bottle. For a longer lay-up, follow the manual’s fuel-draining and engine-storage procedure; do not assume that leaving mixed fuel in the tank will preserve starting performance.

What line fits the Homelite HBLT25CD?

The specified line diameter is 2.4 mm. The manual identifies spare line as part 528721006. Match both the diameter and the head’s loading instructions; a thicker line can overload the engine or fail to fit, while a thinner line may wear faster and change cutting behavior.

When replacing line, stop the engine, let the head cool and remove the ignition lead if the manual requires it. Clean grass from the head, wind the line evenly in the indicated direction, leave the specified tail length and refit the retaining components. After starting, allow the guard’s blade to trim excess line. If the line repeatedly breaks, inspect for contact with hard objects and verify that the spool is wound evenly rather than simply installing longer pieces.

What safety equipment and work-area checks are required?

The manual calls for eye, hearing and head protection. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing that will not catch in the rotating head, and keep bystanders and pets outside the debris zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Clear rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, loose string and other hard objects before starting.
  • Inspect the guard and line-cutting blade; never operate with a damaged or missing guard.
  • Hold the trimmer so the rotating line stays away from your legs and feet.
  • Stop the engine before carrying the machine, clearing a jam, refuelling or making an adjustment.
  • Let the engine cool before cleaning or servicing.
  • Do not use unapproved attachments or modify the head, guard or controls.

These precautions matter particularly with a 432 mm swath: the head covers a broad arc and can throw debris well beyond the immediate cutting point.

What do owners say about the HBLT25CD?

ProductReview.com.au lists 12 reviews and an overall score of 2.7/5, accessed in 2026. Its category scores show why the average is mixed rather than a clear recommendation.

Category Score How to interpret it
Build quality 2.6/5 Owner perception is below average in this sample
Value for money 3.0/5 Opinions are roughly neutral
Ease of use 2.5/5 Starting and operation concerns weigh on the rating
Cleaning and maintenance 3.3/5 Maintenance is manageable for some owners
Noise level 2.8/5 Noise is a noticeable drawback
Safety 3.4/5 Safety opinions are the strongest category in this sample

Twelve reviews cannot establish failure rates or long-term durability for every HBLT25CD. The sample does, however, support a practical expectation: condition, maintenance history and starting behavior matter more than the model name alone when evaluating a used machine.

Is the Homelite HBLT25CD worth buying?

It can be worthwhile for a homeowner who wants a broad cutting path, accepts two-stroke fuel mixing and is comfortable cleaning filters and replacing consumables. The 26 cm³ engine and 4.4 kg equipped weight are reasonable for routine grass trimming, but the published noise level, manual starting procedure and mixed owner feedback rule out a carefree recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reasons to consider it

  • Wide 432 mm swath can reduce passes on open lawn edges.
  • 2.4 mm line is a common, clearly specified consumable, with a model part number in the manual.
  • Mechanical controls, a primer bulb and recoil starter are serviceable without a battery or charger.
  • Owner evidence includes an example of almost six years of use, although that is one person’s experience.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • Hot restarting is specifically reported as difficult by an owner, and ease of use scores only 2.5/5.
  • At 93.8 dB(A), it requires serious hearing protection.
  • Two-stroke fuel preparation and annual filter and plug work add more maintenance than a low-maintenance electric system.
  • The available evidence does not establish current price, warranty coverage, parts stock or controlled performance against competing trimmers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should you compare it with another trimmer?

No controlled competitor test is available for the HBLT25CD, so a fair comparison should use published specifications and an identical hands-on checklist rather than assuming one model is faster.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Power Are displacement and rated output stated under comparable conditions?
Cutting system What line diameter, swath and approved head or blade options are included?
Weight Does the figure include the head, guard, harness or fuel?
Starting Does it use primer and choke, and is warm restarting documented?
Noise and vibration Are sound figures measured at the operator position, and are vibration data supplied?
Fuel and maintenance What mixture, filter-cleaning interval, plug and storage steps are required?
Support Can you verify parts, manuals, warranty and service support for your country?

Check the configuration behind every number. A trimmer that appears lighter may simply be quoted without its cutting head or guard, while a wider swath may demand more engine power and fuel in dense growth.

What should you inspect when buying a used HBLT25CD?

Ask to see the machine start from cold and restart after it reaches operating temperature. A seller who arrives with the engine already warm can conceal the symptom reported by some owners.

  • Confirm the model marking and inspect the tank, fuel lines and primer bulb for cracks or leaks.
  • Check that the guard, line-cutting blade, head and retaining hardware are present and undamaged.
  • Ask when the foam filter and TORCH L7RTC plug were last replaced.
  • Look for a smooth idle, clean throttle response and a head that stops when the trigger is released.
  • Verify that the recoil starter retracts fully and that the shaft and handle are not bent.
  • Budget for fresh 2.4 mm line and a complete service if the maintenance history is unknown.

Do not pay a premium based solely on a claim of long ownership. The published owner score is mixed, and no independent durability test establishes a predictable remaining service life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HBLT25CD come with a harness?

The manual’s published weights exclude the harness, and one figure also excludes the cutting attachment. That does not establish what a particular retail package contains, so check the box contents or seller listing for your market before buying.

Can I use any equivalent spark plug instead of the TORCH L7RTC?

The operator manual identifies TORCH L7RTC as the specified plug. An equivalent should only be used when its heat range, thread and dimensions are confirmed against Homelite service information; a plug that physically fits is not automatically suitable.

How often should I replace the trimmer line?

There is no fixed time interval because wear depends on edging, abrasive surfaces and contact with hard objects. Replace it when the line is too short to feed correctly, repeatedly breaks after checking the spool, or has become damaged; keep the replacement at the specified diameter.

What is the best way to evaluate one that has been stored for years?

Ask for a cold start, inspect the fuel system for brittleness or leaks, and assume the old fuel should be replaced before testing. Also budget for a new filter and plug, then verify that the head stops on trigger release and that the guard and line blade are intact.
