Choose a home solar battery by the loads you need to run and how long you need them—not by your home’s square footage or a headline capacity number. First define whether you want bill savings, more solar self-consumption, backup for selected circuits, whole-home backup, or longer outage resilience. Then calculate the required energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh), check the battery’s usable capacity, and separately verify its continuous and surge power in kilowatts (kW). Those checks help establish whether one battery is enough; a licensed installer must confirm the final electrical design and local requirements.
What should you decide before choosing a battery?
Start with the outcome you want. A battery chosen to use more of your own solar power may be configured differently from one intended to keep selected circuits running in an outage. Whole-home backup and multi-day resilience add further demands. The design depends on household energy use and when it occurs, the outage loads you select, the solar array, and expected future demand.
Write down the goal and the backup window before comparing products. For example, decide whether the priority is keeping medical equipment and refrigeration running overnight, backing up a broader set of circuits, or shifting energy use to match a utility tariff. A larger battery is not automatically a better fit: the Australian Government’s YourHome guidance says an appropriately designed solar PV and battery system matters more than simply having a large storage capacity.

Choose a coverage goal
- Bill savings or solar self-consumption: Identify when the home uses electricity and whether the local tariff or compensation for exported solar makes storing energy worthwhile.
- Critical-load backup: Select only the circuits and appliances that matter during an outage, then size for their energy needs and starting loads.
- Whole-home backup: List all intended loads, including large appliances, and verify that the battery, inverter, backup equipment, and service panel can support them together.
- Longer-duration resilience: Calculate essential energy over the desired period and consider whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage.
NREL’s 2024 technical guidance describes grid-connected residential storage as typically serving up to roughly one to two days and notes that storage has decreasing marginal utility as its size increases. That is context, not a promise about a particular system: actual duration depends on the home’s load profile, battery charge level, outage timing, and operating limits. For some households and locations, another generation source may be more economical for a prolonged outage.

How do you calculate the battery capacity you need?
Estimate the energy required for the backup window by adding each selected load’s power multiplied by its expected operating time. Then compare that delivered-energy requirement with the product’s usable capacity—not just the nominal kWh printed in an advertisement.
Required delivered energy (kWh) = sum of each load’s power (kW) × hours of operation
For instance, if a refrigerator averages 0.15 kW over 24 hours, its contribution is approximately 3.6 kWh before system losses and operating variation. This is an example calculation, not a typical value for every refrigerator; measure the appliance or consult its documentation where possible. Intermittent appliances may have a much lower average draw than their running-watt rating suggests, so distinguish energy over time from power at a given moment.

Use usable capacity, not just nominal capacity
Nominal capacity is the total energy a battery can hold; usable capacity is the amount the manufacturer makes available under its operating limits, including its depth-of-discharge policy. If a specification gives only nominal kWh, do not assume every nominal kilowatt-hour can be delivered. Apply the manufacturer’s stated depth of discharge and relevant conversion losses before deciding whether the target is met.
NREL’s residential PV-storage benchmark uses an 80% depth-of-discharge assumption and 90% inverter-efficiency assumption in its calculations. Those are benchmark assumptions, not universal settings for every current battery. Use the chosen product’s own specifications instead of transplanting those percentages into a real design.
Estimate runtime from the average load
A basic runtime estimate is:
Runtime (hours) = usable battery energy (kWh) ÷ average load (kW)

NREL’s 2024 technical guidance illustrates the arithmetic with a 10 kWh battery serving a 2 kW average load: the result is five hours of autonomy. It is an illustration, not a runtime guarantee for a home. Actual results depend on the battery’s available charge, the load profile, inverter limits, and system conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is the difference between battery kW and kWh?
kWh measures energy capacity—how much energy is available over time. kW measures power—how much the system can supply at once. A battery must have enough of both: sufficient usable kWh for the planned duration and sufficient kW for the loads operating simultaneously.
A battery with ample kWh but too little power may run a modest load for a long time yet fail to start a large compressor. A high-power battery with limited usable energy may handle a short burst but run out quickly. Evaluate the following separately:
- Continuous output: Add the power of loads expected to operate at the same time and compare the total with the battery and inverter’s sustained output limits.
- Peak or surge output: Check short-duration output for motors and compressors, especially central air conditioning, well pumps, sump pumps, refrigerators, and workshop equipment.
- Largest starting event: Confirm the system can handle the largest expected startup surge. A residential battery buyer guide warns that motor-starting surge can be several times running watts.
- System-wide limits: Confirm compatible power limits for the battery, inverter, backup gateway, and panel or transfer equipment. The weakest applicable limit can constrain what the backed-up system can run.
Do not add running watts alone and assume the result covers startup. Ask the installer to account for the surge rating and whether multiple motor starts could overlap with other loads.
How do you make a critical-loads worksheet?
List every appliance or circuit you want backed up, its running watts, its starting watts or surge if applicable, and the hours it must operate. Use measured values or equipment documentation rather than invented averages, then calculate the energy for the planned outage window.
| Load | Running watts | Starting watts or surge | Hours needed | Backup kWh | Must run? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator/freezer | Measure | Ask manufacturer or installer | 24 hours, intermittent | Calculate | Yes/no |
| Internet/networking | Measure | Usually low | Planned hours | Calculate | Yes/no |
| Lighting | Add selected fixtures | Usually low | Planned hours | Calculate | Yes/no |
| Furnace or heat-pump controls | Measure or specify | Check motor start | Planned hours | Calculate | Yes/no |
| Sump or well pump | Measure or specify | Confirm surge | Planned hours | Calculate | Yes/no |
| Medical equipment | Measure or specify | Confirm device requirements | Prescribed hours | Calculate | Yes |
| Central air conditioning | Installer or equipment specification | Confirm compressor surge | Optional hours | Calculate | Yes/no |
For plug-in appliances, a Kill A Watt electricity usage monitor is one measurement option. Its official product description identifies it as a home electrical usage monitor, and educational material describes measuring and monitoring standard-device power consumption. It does not replace a whole-home monitor or an electrician’s assessment of hard-wired loads.

Turn the worksheet into a system target
- Set the outage window. Use the duration that matters to you, such as overnight or a full day of essential use.
- Calculate each load’s energy. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by expected hours. For intermittent loads, use measured or documented energy use when available rather than treating the appliance as continuously on.
- Add the selected loads. Sum their kWh for the target period. Do not include appliances you are willing to leave off during an outage.
- Allow for the system’s limits and operating reserve. A reasonable reserve depends on the reliability you want and the battery’s usable-capacity definition. Account for manufacturer-stated operating restrictions and conversion losses where the capacity figure does not already reflect them.
- Check simultaneous and startup power. Compare the expected concurrent load with continuous kW, then check the largest motor or compressor surge against the product’s peak rating.
- Have the design verified. A licensed installer can check panel capacity, transfer equipment, inverter limits, placement, permits, and interconnection requirements.
Example: deciding whether a 10 kWh usable battery is enough
Suppose the planned overnight loads are a refrigerator, networking equipment, lights, and a furnace blower. The owner measures or obtains the relevant load data, calculates energy for the target window, and finds a total delivered-energy need of 8 kWh. A battery specified at 10 kWh usable meets that energy target in principle. That does not yet establish that it can run the combination: its continuous output must support the loads operating together, and its surge output must cover the largest motor start.
If the battery’s 10 kWh figure is nominal rather than usable, reduce the available amount according to the manufacturer’s depth-of-discharge and system-efficiency specifications before judging the target. This distinction can change whether the proposed capacity is adequate.
How many batteries do you need?
There is no reliable one-battery-per-household rule. The number depends on the chosen product’s usable kWh, its continuous and peak kW, the backed-up loads, and the duration you want; the house’s square footage alone cannot answer it.
NYSERDA describes roughly 10–20 kWh as a typical residential storage-system range, while emphasizing that required size depends on household use and how many loads are selected for backup. Treat that as a broad market reference, not a sizing recommendation. A household with modest critical loads may need less than a whole-home design, while a large load or longer backup window may require more capacity and power.
Use the worksheet to determine whether the first unit meets both energy and power requirements. Add capacity only when the calculated load, runtime target, or future demand justifies it; do not buy a second battery simply on the hope that it will solve a problem that may actually be a surge-power or inverter-compatibility limit. Confirm whether the system supports expansion and whether additional modules remain compatible across product revisions.
What battery specifications should you compare?
Compare the system’s operating capabilities and installation constraints, not just advertised kWh. Warranty language, efficiency, temperature limits, and compatibility can change how useful a nominal capacity is for your home.

| Peak/surge power | Output level and duration allowed for starting loads | Motors and compressors may need brief high power. |
| Depth of discharge | Allowed portion of nameplate capacity and related warranty conditions | Nominal capacity may exceed the usable amount. |
| Round-trip efficiency | Energy returned relative to energy used to charge the battery | Affects energy throughput and the economics of cycling. |
| Warranty and cycle life | Years, cycles, throughput, retained capacity, and operating conditions | A headline warranty duration does not describe all limits. |

| Inverter and coupling | AC- or DC-coupling requirements and compatibility with existing solar equipment | Existing equipment can constrain expansion and power flow. |
| Expansion | Whether modules can be added and compatibility across revisions | Determines whether later capacity additions are supported. |
| Safety and code compliance | Required listings, disconnects, gateway or transfer equipment, permits, and fire requirements | Installation must meet applicable local and program requirements. |
NREL’s 2025 residential-storage modeling assumptions use 85% as a representative round-trip efficiency. It is a modeling value, not a guaranteed efficiency for every product. For a runtime estimate based on a manufacturer’s usable AC-side capacity, do not deduct the same conversion loss a second time. For economics and energy throughput, compare efficiency with warranty throughput, degradation assumptions, and local electricity rates rather than treating one percentage as decisive.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can solar recharge the battery during an outage?
Possibly, but do not assume the array can refill the battery just because solar panels are present. Recharge depends on location, array size and orientation, weather, outage timing, reserve settings, inverter architecture, coupling, and the loads using energy while charging.
Ask the installer to show how the system behaves across a realistic outage scenario: whether the array can serve critical loads and charge the battery at the same time, how much charging and discharging power the inverter permits, and whether the system preserves an emergency reserve. NREL’s benchmark guidance emphasizes that backup duration depends on charge level, outage timing, and the home’s load profile; the same variables affect whether an outage-period recharge plan is credible.
There is no universal solar-array-to-battery ratio that guarantees a particular backup duration. A design that works during sunny conditions may not meet the same target during weak solar production, so evaluate the loads and recharge expectation together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do AC coupling and DC coupling affect a battery choice?
AC- and DC-coupled systems connect the battery and solar equipment differently, so compatibility cannot be inferred from battery capacity alone. Existing solar equipment may limit expansion or the power available for charging and discharging.

What installation and safety checks are necessary?
A battery installation is an electrical system, not just a storage appliance. Final design and electrical work should be handled by a licensed installer who can verify the service panel, backup circuits, transfer equipment, inverter limits, placement, permits, and utility interconnection rules.
- Confirm the required backup gateway, transfer equipment, disconnects, and panel configuration.
- Check battery placement against the manufacturer’s temperature and enclosure requirements and applicable fire and electrical codes.
- Verify product safety listings and local permitting requirements. NYSERDA notes that safety listings and fire-code requirements are part of qualifying storage installations in its program context.
- Confirm the utility’s interconnection requirements and whether the system is configured for the intended grid-connected or backup operation.
- Review how the system handles loads that exceed its power limits and what circuits remain outside the backup panel.
These checks are not interchangeable with a capacity calculation. A system can have enough usable kWh on paper and still be unsuitable if its electrical integration, placement, or permitted configuration does not fit the home.
What are the common battery-sizing mistakes?
Most sizing errors come from using the wrong measure of demand or treating a product’s headline capacity as a complete design answer.
- Sizing from square footage: Floor area does not reveal which circuits matter, how much energy they use, or their motor-start requirements.
- Confusing kW and kWh: Duration and instantaneous output answer different questions; check both.
- Using nameplate capacity as usable capacity: Account for manufacturer limits and relevant losses if the specification does not already report usable energy.
- Ignoring startup surge: A compressor or pump can exceed its running-watt figure at startup.
- Assuming whole-home backup: Do not promise whole-home operation without identifying backed-up circuits, simultaneous loads, and surge demand.
- Assuming panels will always recharge storage: Solar production, weather, outage timing, inverter design, and concurrent loads all affect recharge.
- Buying extra capacity without diagnosing the constraint: More kWh does not necessarily fix insufficient kW, incompatible equipment, or an installation limitation.
How should you make the final choice?
Choose the smallest system that meets your documented energy and power targets with the operating reserve and expansion flexibility you actually need. The final choice should also fit the solar equipment, site conditions, safety requirements, and local utility process.
- Write down the objective: savings, self-consumption, critical-load backup, whole-home coverage, or longer resilience.
- Complete the load worksheet with measured or documented values and the desired backup hours.
- Calculate the delivered kWh target and compare it with manufacturer-stated usable capacity.
- Check continuous kW for simultaneous loads and peak kW for the largest starting event.
- Ask how the system will recharge, preserve reserve, and operate during weak solar production.
- Compare efficiency, warranty throughput, cycle life, temperature limits, coupling, and expansion terms.
- Have a licensed installer verify the equipment fit, panel and transfer requirements, safety, permits, and interconnection.
That process gives you a defensible capacity target without pretending that a generic battery size can answer a site-specific question. The final design should be tied to actual loads, actual equipment specifications, and the outage or savings outcome you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?
Often this is a compatibility question rather than a simple capacity match. The existing inverter and system architecture can constrain an expansion, so provide their specifications to an installer and ask how the proposed battery will connect and operate.
Does a battery reserve setting reduce the energy available for an outage?
A reserve setting affects how much stored energy the system keeps unavailable for ordinary use. Ask how the selected operating mode defines that reserve and whether it changes the energy available for the backup scenario you care about.
Is a portable power station the same as a home solar battery?
No. A portable power station should not be treated as equivalent to a permitted, grid-interactive home battery; home integration, transfer equipment, and electrical-code requirements are part of the system design.
Will a battery lower my electric bill if I rarely have outages?
It may support bill savings by shifting when solar energy is used, but the result depends on the utility tariff, local electricity rates, system efficiency, warranty throughput, and degradation assumptions. Compare those economics for your location rather than assuming backup value alone makes the investment worthwhile.
