A home battery makes more sense if you want quiet, automatic backup for shorter outages and can benefit from solar or utility-bill savings between them. A generator is usually the better fit when outages may last several days, you need sustained high power, and you can manage fuel, noise, and maintenance. Either can serve selected circuits or a properly designed whole home; the deciding questions are how much power you need and for how long.
What is the main difference between a home battery and a generator?
A battery supplies electricity stored in advance; a generator makes electricity while its engine has fuel and can keep running. That difference makes outage duration the key technical trade-off. A battery’s useful runtime is limited by its usable energy and the loads it serves, while a generator’s runtime depends on fuel availability, consumption, and maintenance.
Neither option automatically powers every appliance in a house. The system must be sized for the loads it will serve, and the home must be safely isolated from the utility grid during backup operation. A small battery or portable generator may be appropriate for a few essentials; whole-home service requires appropriately sized equipment and transfer gear.

| Energy during an outage | Limited to stored usable capacity; solar may recharge an islanded system when conditions permit. | Can continue producing power while fuel and maintenance support are available. |
| Power for simultaneous loads | Limited by inverter output in kW as well as remaining energy in kWh. | Limited by rated output and its ability to handle starting surges. |
| Typical strengths | Quiet operation, automatic backup, no on-site combustion, and possible daily solar or time-of-use value. | Longer-duration output, sustained high loads, and lower entry cost at the low end of the equipment range. |
| Ongoing considerations | Charging strategy, load management, installation requirements, and eventual replacement. | Fuel supply and storage, engine maintenance, noise, combustion safety, and local rules. |
| Typical use cases | Frequent shorter outages, solar self-consumption, or noise-sensitive settings. | Multi-day outage risk, high starting loads, or a need for continuous output. |
These are differences between system types, not guarantees about every model. Actual transfer behavior, noise, capacity, output, and installation depend on the equipment and design.

How long will a home battery last during an outage?
Runtime depends on usable battery capacity, inverter output, temperature, the appliances being used, and how carefully loads are managed. A California Public Utilities Commission overview gives 24–48 hours as a typical range for priority loads on a single battery or whole-home backup from a larger system under stated conditions; it is not a runtime guarantee for every home.
Battery capacity is usually stated in kilowatt-hours (kWh), while power output is stated in kilowatts (kW). A battery can have enough stored energy for many hours on paper but still be unable to run several high-demand appliances at once if its inverter’s continuous or surge rating is too low. Conversely, a high-output system can run large loads briefly but still run out of stored energy if those loads consume it quickly.
Estimate your likely runtime
- Identify the loads you would actually use during an outage, rather than adding every appliance in the house.
- Estimate each device’s energy use over the hours it needs to run. A device’s running watts multiplied by hours of use gives watt-hours; divide by 1,000 for kilowatt-hours.
- Compare the estimated total with the battery’s usable—not nameplate—capacity. Usable capacity is lower than the headline capacity, and reserve settings or operating conditions may reduce the energy available to your backed-up loads.
- Check that the battery’s continuous output can support the loads running at the same time and that its surge output can handle motor starts, such as a pump or refrigerator compressor.
- Consider when the system can recharge. If solar is part of the design, model overnight use and cloudy-day production instead of assuming the panels will refill the battery every day.
The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water gives 4–14 kWh as a typical household battery capacity range. That is a broad reference, not a sizing recommendation: actual household needs and usable capacity vary. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Building America Solution Center says battery life is usually over 10 years; longevity for a specific system depends on its product, use, and conditions.

Can solar panels keep a house running when the grid is down?
Sometimes, but ordinary grid-connected solar panels do not necessarily keep producing usable household power during an outage. Solar-only systems generally shut down without islanding capability and storage. A system designed to disconnect from the grid and operate independently can serve backed-up loads, and solar can recharge an islanded battery when sunlight is available.
Ask the installer to explain exactly what remains powered when the grid fails: whether the solar array can operate while isolated, which circuits the battery backs up, and how the system behaves when battery charge is low or solar production falls. Do not infer outage capability just from having solar panels or a battery; it depends on the system architecture and permitted electrical design.
Will a battery or generator power the whole house?
Either technology can be designed for selected critical circuits or, with adequate capacity and transfer equipment, whole-home backup. “Whole home” is not a fixed output level: running a few lights and a refrigerator is a very different demand from simultaneously operating electric heating, cooling, a water pump, and cooking appliances.

Critical-load backup
A critical-load setup backs up a chosen group of circuits, such as refrigeration, lighting, internet, a pump, or medical equipment. It can make a smaller system practical, but the load list needs to reflect what must operate together. A household may need to switch off optional appliances or stagger heavy loads to remain within the system’s output limit.
Whole-home backup
A whole-home design aims to keep more of the home’s electrical system available, but that does not mean every appliance can run simultaneously without limits. The installer must account for total running demand, motor starting surges, transfer equipment, and the source’s continuous output. Battery systems also need enough stored energy for the expected duration; generator systems need an adequate fuel plan.
To choose between these coverage levels, list the loads that matter first and size around them. If you rely on medical equipment, refrigeration for medication, heating, cooling, or a water pump, include its running demand and any startup surge in the design conversation. A licensed electrician should determine the electrical configuration and required protection.
What do a home battery and generator cost?
The California Public Utilities Commission lists indicative equipment ranges of $5,000 to over $7,000 for a battery and $500 to over $10,000 for a generator. The publication year is not stated; the ranges were accessed in 2026. They vary with size and installation and are not directly comparable installed-project quotes.
| Option | Indicative equipment range | Why an installed quote may differ |
|---|---|---|
| Home battery | $5,000 to over $7,000, per the California Public Utilities Commission; publication year not stated, accessed 2026. | A project may include an inverter, gateway, electrical-panel work, permits, and optional solar. |
| Generator | $500 to over $10,000, per the California Public Utilities Commission; publication year not stated, accessed 2026. | A project may include a concrete pad, transfer switch, gas or propane work, permits, and fuel storage. |
The broad generator range spans different equipment and configurations, so the lowest equipment figure should not be treated as the cost of a permitted whole-home installation. Ask for an itemized quote that distinguishes equipment, electrical work, fuel connection or storage, permits, and any solar or panel upgrades. Confirm applicable incentives, interconnection rules, noise ordinances, and air-quality requirements for your location; these can change the project’s cost or feasibility.

Transfer behavior varies by product and installation. Tesla’s manufacturer comparison lists its Powerwall as automatic, with a transition of less than one second, and a generator delay of 15–30 seconds. Those are manufacturer-reported figures for the comparison, not universal timings for all batteries and generators.

Ask what happens to sensitive electronics and essential equipment during the transition, and confirm which loads are on the backed-up side of the system. Automatic transfer does not increase a battery’s energy capacity or a generator’s output; it only describes how the system changes power sources. A portable generator generally requires the user to start and connect it according to its instructions, rather than behaving like an automatically starting installed standby system.
Which option is quieter and easier to live with?
Batteries are quiet and have no on-site combustion emissions. Generators create engine noise and exhaust where they operate, so siting, neighboring homes, local restrictions, and safe exhaust clearance matter. Manufacturer comparison figures illustrate that these products can differ substantially: Tesla lists Powerwall noise below 40 dBA at one metre and generator noise at 77 dBA at one metre. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not representative measurements for every system.
A battery’s routine burden is principally managing stored energy and ensuring the system is designed for the loads and recharge pattern you need. A generator adds recurring engine maintenance and fuel logistics, whether that means keeping an appropriate supply on hand or relying on a continuously available fuel connection. The quieter option may be especially valuable in a noise-sensitive neighborhood, but the better choice still depends on required power and outage length.

What safety rules matter when using a generator?
Never operate a portable generator indoors or in an enclosed or partially enclosed space. Washington State Department of Health guidance says: “Never use a portable generator in a garage, carport, basement, crawl space or other enclosed or partially-enclosed area, even with ventilation.” It also advises keeping generators at least 20 feet from buildings and using a qualified electrician-installed transfer switch for house wiring.
- Never run a portable generator in a home, garage, carport, basement, crawl space, or other enclosed or partially enclosed area, even if doors or windows are open.
- Keep it at least 20 feet from buildings, as advised by Washington State Department of Health guidance, and follow the generator manufacturer’s siting instructions and local requirements.
- Never connect a generator to house wiring in a way that can feed power back into utility lines. Use compliant transfer equipment installed by a qualified electrician.
- Use cords and connections rated for the load and outdoor conditions, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connection and operation.
- Follow the equipment’s fuel, storage, maintenance, and shutdown instructions. Fuel type and local rules affect what is practical and permitted.
A battery avoids on-site engine exhaust, but it is still a substantial electrical installation. Its connection, isolation, permits, and operating configuration should be handled as a code-compliant system, not improvised during an outage.
How do I size backup power for my home?
Start with the services you cannot do without, then compare both the energy needed over time and the maximum power required at once. A licensed electrician can translate that list into a compliant system and determine the transfer equipment and permits required.

- List essential equipment. Include medical devices, refrigeration, heating or cooling, water pumps, internet, and lighting that must remain available.
- Record running and starting demand. Check each device’s rating or documentation for running watts and startup surge, especially for motor-driven equipment.
- Total simultaneous loads. Decide which devices could run together and which can be switched off or staggered. This total is relevant to inverter or generator output.
- Choose the coverage goal. Decide whether you need critical-load circuits or whole-home backup, rather than assuming that a large-sounding capacity covers every appliance.
- For a battery, check energy and power separately. Compare usable kWh with expected consumption, then check continuous and surge kW. Model overnight use and cloudy-day solar recharge if the system includes solar.
- For a generator, check output and fuel logistics. Compare rated and surge watts, fuel type, expected fuel consumption for your loads, and how you will refuel or maintain a fuel supply during a prolonged outage.
- Have the installation designed and permitted. Ask a licensed electrician to specify transfer equipment, anti-backfeed protection, permits, and any electrical-panel or fuel-system work.
When is a battery the better choice?
A battery is the stronger fit when quiet, automatic operation and the ability to use stored solar energy or manage time-of-use costs matter alongside outage protection. It is most compelling when your backup loads are clearly defined and you are comfortable managing energy so the stored supply lasts.
Recommended Free Tools
- You experience frequent but generally shorter outages and want backup without routinely handling fuel.
- You have solar, or your utility rates make daily self-consumption or time-of-use shifting valuable in addition to emergency backup.
- Noise is a concern, or local installation conditions make an engine-based system difficult.
- You can size and manage the system around essential loads rather than expecting unlimited whole-home power.
The trade-off is that stored energy is finite. A battery may be a poor sole solution if your priority is running large loads continuously through a long outage and you cannot recharge it dependably.
When is a generator the better choice?
A generator is often the stronger fit when outages may continue for days, the loads are demanding, and fuel can be stored or supplied reliably. It can keep producing electricity as long as its fuel and maintenance support last, but this depends on the fuel plan being workable during the same conditions that interrupt utility service.
- You face a meaningful risk of multi-day outages and have a dependable way to obtain or supply fuel.
- You need sustained high loads, such as certain heating systems or pumps with large startup demands.
- You can accommodate engine noise, safe outdoor placement, maintenance, and the relevant permits or local restrictions.
- You want a lower-cost entry point for some generator equipment configurations, while budgeting separately for the installed system.
A portable unit may cover only selected loads and needs user operation; a permanently installed standby generator can be designed for automatic whole-home service. Neither should be connected to house wiring without compliant transfer equipment.
Could a hybrid battery-and-generator system make sense?
A hybrid design can use a battery for fast, quiet operation and everyday cycling, then start or rely on a generator when the battery charge is low or loads exceed battery output. This can combine the battery’s short-term convenience with a generator’s ability to produce power for longer, but it adds equipment and system-design complexity.

What if I rent or only need backup for small loads?
A portable power station can suit renters, short outages, and limited loads such as electronics and lighting, especially when permanent wiring changes are not an option. It is not a substitute for a permitted whole-home backup system, and its capacity and output still need to match the devices you intend to use.
Before relying on one, check its usable energy, continuous output, surge capability, and recharge options against your actual devices. Do not assume a unit can safely run a refrigerator, heater, or other high-demand appliance just because it has outlets; consult its specifications and the appliance’s requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a generator run during a power outage if it is raining?
Follow the generator maker’s instructions for weather protection and placement; a generator must remain outdoors with its exhaust safely away from buildings. Do not cover it in a way that traps heat or exhaust, and consult local fire-safety guidance for the specific model.
Can I plug a refrigerator directly into a portable generator?
Only if the generator’s rated output, surge capacity, and connection method meet the refrigerator’s requirements. Use an outdoor-rated cord sized for the load and distance, and follow both manufacturers’ instructions; never improvise a connection to household wiring.
Do I need a permit to install a home battery or standby generator?
Permit and inspection requirements depend on your local jurisdiction and installation details. Ask the installer and local authority having jurisdiction before purchasing equipment, especially if the project changes the electrical panel, connects solar, or adds a fuel line.
