Home Assistant does not continuously rerun an automation while a sensor remains above a value. An automation starts when one of its triggers fires; if you need to check a value repeatedly, schedule runs with a time_pattern trigger and test the current value with a condition. For a change that should prompt one immediate response, use a state, numeric-state, device, or suitable event trigger instead.
Does Home Assistant keep checking an automation while its condition is true?
No. A trigger starts an automation at a particular moment; a condition is checked only after the automation has started. If a door opens, for example, a trigger can react to the change from closed to open. It will not fire again simply because the door remains open.
This distinction explains many “it ran once and stopped” reports. A condition such as “the temperature is above the target” does not watch the temperature for you. It answers whether that statement is true when the automation is already running. To react to a change, define a trigger that represents the change or threshold. To repeat a check, define a schedule.

- Trigger: the event or moment that starts a run, such as an entity change, an event-bus message, a clock schedule, or an HTTP request.
- Condition: a test evaluated during that run, such as whether a sensor currently meets a requirement.
Home Assistant’s automation documentation makes the same conceptual distinction: triggers react at a specific moment, while conditions check whether something is true right now. Put the test in the trigger when the transition itself matters; put it in a condition when the automation should start for some other reason and proceed only if the test passes.

How do I check a sensor every five minutes?
Use a repeating time_pattern trigger, then add a condition for the sensor state or value that should permit the action. In YAML, the important distinction is the slash in "/5": it means every five minutes, whereas 5 means minute five of each hour.
triggers:
- trigger: time_pattern
minutes: "/5"
This trigger starts the automation on the schedule. The condition should check the sensor at that run, and the action should follow only when the condition passes. That makes the automation a scheduled check—not a continuously running watcher.
Why did minutes: 5 run once an hour?
Because the value 5 selects the fifth minute of each hour; it does not specify a five-minute interval. Use "/5" for recurring five-minute intervals. The Time pattern documentation describes this trigger as a way to run an automation on a repeating schedule.

- Confirm the trigger uses the interval form, such as
minutes: "/5", rather than a specific minute value. - Confirm the sensor test is a condition if the intention is to check its current value on each scheduled run.
- Check the installed Home Assistant release’s documentation if trigger names, YAML structure, or UI labels differ from the example. Trigger syntax and availability can change between releases.
What is the difference between a state trigger, a numeric-state trigger, and an event trigger?
They listen for different kinds of starters. State and numeric-state triggers are usually the natural fit when an entity changes or a value crosses a threshold; an event trigger listens for a message of a chosen type on Home Assistant’s event bus.

| Approach | What starts the run | How to check the current requirement | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| State trigger | An entity’s state change | Use a condition if the automation should proceed only when another current-state test passes | Useful when the change itself matters, such as a door changing from closed to open |
| Numeric-state trigger | A value crossing a numeric threshold | Use a condition or scheduled check if the requirement is that the value remain beyond the threshold | A crossing is not a repeated “still above” check |
| Event trigger | A matching event-bus message | Use a condition if the message should start a run but current entity state must also qualify | The event and its data depend on the integration or service that emits it |
| Time-pattern trigger | A clock schedule | Put the current-state test in a condition evaluated on each run | Creates recurring automation runs rather than reacting to a particular change |
| Webhook trigger | An HTTP request to the webhook endpoint | Use a condition if the request should be accepted only when other current requirements pass | Can provide request data to templates; the webhook ID must be treated as a secret |
Home Assistant describes events as the way it announces that something has happened. Choose an event trigger when the integration or service emits a meaningful event that you want to handle. For common device changes, a more specific state or device trigger is generally easier to configure. Home Assistant also offers template and integration-specific trigger types, so check the installed release and the integration’s documentation for the relevant option.
When is a numeric-state trigger not enough?
A numeric-state trigger responds when a value crosses a threshold; it does not repeatedly start the automation for as long as the value stays on one side. If the requirement is “act once when it becomes too high,” a threshold trigger fits. If it is “check every five minutes and act if it is still too high,” use a scheduled trigger and a current-value condition.
Should I use polling or an event-based trigger?
Use an event or entity-change trigger when the integration can tell Home Assistant that something relevant happened. Use a time-pattern schedule when you specifically need recurring checks, including cases where the rule is “look at the current value again at regular intervals.” These approaches solve different problems: an event reacts to a message, while a schedule starts a run because time has passed.
Choose by the behavior you need
- React to a device or entity changing: start with a state or device trigger; use a numeric-state trigger for a threshold crossing.
- Handle a meaningful event from an integration or service: use an event trigger if that event is exposed on the event bus and is the right signal for the job.
- Check a condition at regular intervals: use a time-pattern trigger and evaluate the current state in a condition.
- Start from an HTTP request: consider a webhook trigger only when the request’s security and consequences are appropriate.
Scheduled checks can start runs even when nothing has changed, so they may do unnecessary automation work compared with a suitable event-driven trigger. Conversely, a threshold-crossing trigger cannot substitute for a recurring check if the automation must reconsider a value that remains beyond the threshold. Match the trigger to the timing requirement rather than choosing polling simply because a condition needs to be tested.

Is automation polling the same as integration polling?
No. An automation schedule controls when a user-created automation runs. Integration polling is an implementation detail: an integration periodically fetches data from an API, often using Home Assistant’s DataUpdateCoordinator. The automation schedule does not, by itself, change how often an integration fetches its data.
What always_update: false changes for integrations
When a coordinator can compare newly returned data with its previous result, setting always_update: false can avoid listener callbacks and state-machine writes when that data has not changed. This is relevant to integration developers and custom components, not a YAML setting for ordinary automation authors. It also does not establish that an integration supports event-push updates; that depends on the integration.
A Home Assistant developer note dated October 5, 2025, says that if a coordinator refresh is requested while an update is already active, the request is queued for an additional update after the active one finishes. This behavior matters when building or maintaining integrations; it is not a reason to add another scheduled automation check.

Event-trigger data depends on the event type and integration. A webhook trigger has specific request-data fields available to templates: JSON request content is exposed as trigger.json, form data as trigger.data, and URL parameters as trigger.query.

Webhook IDs are secret-like identifiers: possession of the ID is the relevant protection, so do not publish it or put it somewhere untrusted. Webhooks are local-only by default. Leave that restriction enabled unless access from the internet is genuinely required, and do not put destructive or safety-critical actions behind an unauthenticated webhook endpoint. A request payload is input, not proof that a consequential action is safe.
Use the trigger data that matches the request
- For JSON requests, refer to
trigger.json. - For form submissions, refer to
trigger.data. - For values supplied in the URL query string, refer to
trigger.query.
Do not assume that every event trigger exposes the same fields as a webhook. Check the event or integration’s documentation for what it emits and what data is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I diagnose an automation that ran once and then stopped?
First identify what the trigger represents. If it is a state or numeric-state trigger, ask whether the relevant transition or threshold crossing happened again; the value merely remaining true is not another trigger. If repeated evaluation is required, replace that expectation with a schedule and a condition.

- Write down the desired timing. Decide whether the automation should react to a change, a threshold crossing, an event message, a request, or a recurring clock interval.
- Match the trigger to that timing. Use an entity-specific trigger for an entity change, an event trigger for a meaningful event-bus message, a webhook for an HTTP request, or a time-pattern trigger for recurring checks.
- Separate the starter from the test. Put the thing that starts the run in the trigger. Put a current-state requirement that should be evaluated at run time in a condition.
- For a schedule, verify the interval syntax. For five-minute intervals use
minutes: "/5";minutes: 5selects the fifth minute of each hour. - Verify version and integration support. Trigger names, UI labels, and integration-specific options can vary across releases. Confirm that the trigger type exists for the installed release and the integration in use.
This diagnosis separates three different failure patterns: an edge-trigger expected to repeat, a condition mistaken for a starter, and a schedule written as a specific minute rather than an interval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all Home Assistant integrations expose event triggers?
No universal event trigger is guaranteed for every integration. Whether an integration emits an event or offers a dedicated trigger depends on that integration, so check its documentation and the trigger choices available in your installed release.
Can I use a webhook from outside my home network?
Webhook triggers are local-only by default. External access requires changing that default, and because the webhook ID is the protection for the endpoint, enabling outside access should be weighed against the consequences of any action the request can start.
Does setting `always_update: false` make an automation poll less often?
No. That coordinator option concerns whether unchanged integration data produces callbacks and state writes; it does not set an automation’s schedule or the integration’s polling interval.
