A research team led by Tsinghua University reported exposing a millimetre-scale 3D structure in 0.6 seconds using a method called digital incoherent synthesis of holographic light fields (DISH). That is the measured exposure time—not a promise that any object can be fully printed, finished and ready to use in half a second.
What “half a second” means
The headline rounds the paper’s reported minimum exposure time of 0.6 seconds. The Nature team reported that result for a sample of approximately 200 mm3; it describes how long the material was exposed to create the demonstrated structure, not the complete time for setup, processing or post-print handling. The work appeared in Nature on 11 February 2026 as “Sub-second volumetric 3D printing by synthesis of holographic light fields” (Nature paper).
The same sample had a reported volume printing rate of 333 mm3/s. The authors also report a voxel printing rate of 1.25 × 108 voxels/s at a voxel size of (11 μm)2 × 22 μm. These are experimental results for the reported setup and conditions, not general production rates for arbitrary parts or printers.
How DISH makes a 3D object
DISH is a volumetric printing method: it forms a three-dimensional light distribution within the material rather than building the object through the familiar sequence of printed layers. A coherent laser supplies light, and a digital micromirror device (DMD) generates patterns that are optimized as holograms for different projection angles.

- Holographic Effect Plate:We combines two different patterns into the bambu lab build plate, especially for the new design Circle and Star plate. There are different colors under different lighting conditions.2 In 1 spring steel plate provides versatility and convenience for 3D printing enthusiasts.
- Durability and stability: This build plate is made of flexible spring steel sheet, which is very durable and can maintain a flat surface even after repeated use, minimizing warping and ensuring good printing quality. After the printed model cools down, it is easy to remove the model.
- High temperature resistance and Compatible Filaments:The bambu X1 build palte print bed surface is resistant to high temperature 200°C .After our extensive testing, we recommend Circle and Star build Plate to print PLA/TPU/PETG/ABS,If you want to print other filaments, please adjust the parameters.
- Cleaning and Maintenance: Be sure to wipe it clean and dry it before each use to avoid problems. If the build plate is stuck with fingerprints or oil, you can just wipe the surface with a wet paper towel and then dry it with a dry paper towel to keep it clean. It will be as good as new and the pattern can reappear!
- Compatibility: 257x257 mm Flexible spring steel plate size is suitable for Bambu Lab X2D/P2S/X1/X1C/X1E/P1P/ P1S/A1 3D printer. Please confirm the size of your 3D printer before purchasing. In order to achieve good adhesion effect, please choose "Smooth PEI Plate/High Temp"on slice.Highly suggested turn off "Enable detection of build plate position" if your pritner is X1 series.
A high-speed rotating periscope redirects those projections around the stationary sample. The sample itself does not need to rotate. The team also describes adaptive-optics-based calibration to address alignment, optical aberrations and attenuation, which can otherwise affect where energy is delivered inside the material.
The hardware supports rapid pattern changes: the paper describes DMD pattern generation at up to 17,000 Hz and periscope rotation at up to 10 rotations per second. Those component rates help explain the approach, but they are not, by themselves, a guarantee that every object can be produced at the headline exposure time.

- 【New upgraded H1H build plate】One side is a Light beam pattern, which dances in the space like neon-like light strips, vividly displaying natural colors and light with its soft arcs. The other side is a phantom pattern, which seems to be a subtle fusion of reality and dream, creating a fascinating illusion and stunning look. The combination of phantom and beam brings new fun to your 3D printing.
- 【Excellent adhesion for first printing layer】The model can be firmly attached to the surface of the print bed.Easily print even for a newbie. The H1H spring steel flexible build plate (257x257mm) has a good adhesion, even better than smooth PEI PET or PEO. It even can stick well without heating the platform, no glue needed. Please let the build plate cool down before remove the model to avoid damaging the coating.
- 【 Easy to Remove and use】The spring steel sheet can be bent to remove the model quickly, without the help of other tools. And the plate will return to flatness. Made of spring steel plate. Flexible, removable and heat resistance, dual-side design, thicker and more durable. Easy to use, put the printing plate onto the bambu lab 3d printer hot bed, then the print bed levelling will automatically go on while machine powered on. (The smooth surface has a factory protective film).
- 【High Temperature Resistance and Compatible Filaments】The H1H print bed surface is resistant to high temperature 200°C .After our extensive testing, we recommend H1H to print PLA / TPU /PETG/ABS,If you want to print other filaments, please adjust the parameters.
- 【Easy to Maintain】The Light beam or phantom pattern of the printed model may fade or disappear if wiped with hands or other oily objects, but don't worry,You need to wipe the H1H surface with a wet tissue and then wipe dry it with a dry tissue to keep it clean. It will become as clean as the first time you got it,the pattern can be reappeared !
Resolution: stable detail versus the smallest feature
The authors report stable printing resolution of 19 μm across a 1-cm range. Separately, they demonstrate a finest positive feature of 12 μm. These figures describe different things: the 19-μm result is the reported stable resolution across the stated range, while 12 μm is the smallest positive feature demonstrated. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of the whole printer’s resolution.
The paper presents DISH as addressing a trade-off between spatial resolution and build rate in volumetric additive manufacturing. That comparison is bounded by the methods and sample scales studied; it does not establish that DISH outperforms every conventional or volumetric printer for every material, object size or use.

What materials and workflows were demonstrated
The research team reports printing with acrylate materials spanning a range of viscosities. It also demonstrates integration with a fluidic channel to produce structures successively in low-viscosity materials. Additional demonstrations include tubes made with gelatin methacrylate and silk fibroin methacryloyl hydrogels, as well as printing in an elastic urethane dimethacrylate material.
These are laboratory demonstrations, not evidence that all commercial resins or hydrogels will work with DISH. Compatibility depends on the formulation and printing conditions; the paper does not identify a consumer resin product proven for the method.

- Flexible Spring Steel, Easy Release: Durable spring steel stays flat during printing. After the plate cools, gently flex the sheet and finished prints release quickly without scraping.
- Easy to Clean and Reuse: Wipe the surface clean before printing to remove fingerprints, dust and residue. For X1/X1C/X1E printers, disable build plate position detection when required.
Where the technology could be useful—and what is not established
The authors identify high-throughput bioprinting, drug screening, micromachines and miniaturized photonics as possible application areas. These are prospective uses, not deployed products, clinical applications or validated manufacturing lines. The fluid-channel demonstration suggests a route toward continuous production in a specific low-viscosity workflow, but does not establish routine industrial production.
DISH remains a research method in the sources describing the result. They identify no retail DISH machine, commercial availability date or named consumer material demonstrated as compatible. The result is therefore best understood as a significant laboratory printing demonstration, not a new feature available on a desktop printer.
