Choose Hitman: Absolution if you want a self-contained 2012 story, local play on the original Switch, Joy-Con 2 mouse aiming, or a full physical Game Card. Choose Hitman World of Assassination Signature Edition if you want the modern trilogy’s large sandbox levels, 21-plus locations, and more than 100 hours of content on Switch 2. They are not two editions of the same game. Absolution is a linear, cinematic campaign; World of Assassination combines the 2016, 2018, and 2021 trilogy into a replay-focused live-service client. On the original Switch, Absolution runs locally while World of Assassination is cloud streaming. On Switch 2, both are native, but World of Assassination remains dependent on online services for its complete progression system.

What is the real difference between Absolution and World of Assassination?
Absolution is a directed thriller about Agent 47 being betrayed by the Agency, pursued by police, and drawn into a conspiracy involving former colleagues. Its levels are compact and often close-quarters, with scripted action beats, cover-based sneaking, and a strong cinematic focus. IO Interactive’s game director Tore Blystad described it as a personal journey that explores a different part of the Hitman fantasy; Nintendo Life later called it the series’ “black sheep” because it prioritizes cinematic storytelling over player freedom.
World of Assassination is the reboot trilogy presented as one client. Paris, Sapienza, Miami, Mumbai, Dartmoor, Mendoza, Berlin, and other locations are large puzzle-box sandboxes. You learn routes, disguises, accidents, challenges, mastery unlocks, starting locations, and Mission Stories, then replay the same map with new objectives. The campaign, Contracts, Escalations, Elusive Target Arcades, Freelancer, Sniper Assassin, and featured live content make it a fundamentally different game from Absolution.

Absolution’s campaign is built around authored pacing rather than unrestricted experimentation. Disguises are useful but many guards can see through them, so changing clothes is not the automatic solution it is in the reboot. Instinct Mode helps reveal threats and opportunities, but it is finite: overuse depletes the meter, while taking out guards and completing challenges can replenish it. Point Shooting stops time so you can mark several enemies and eliminate them in one sequence. Five difficulty levels culminate in Purist, which Limited Run’s feature material describes as extremely hard.

A secondary report counts twenty missions, each with alternate routes, optional challenges, and score chasing. That number should be treated as a reported count rather than an IO Interactive specification. Contracts adds player-created targets and leaderboard competition, but it is an online mode layered onto a campaign that can otherwise be played locally.
World of Assassination’s design
World of Assassination treats each location as a reusable system. A target can be poisoned, staged into an accident, distracted into a secluded room, eliminated while disguised, or reached through a route you discover on a later playthrough. Mastery unlocks new equipment, disguises, entry points, and starting locations, so repetition is the point rather than a sign that the story has ended.
The Signature Edition contains the complete Hitman (2016), Hitman 2, and Hitman 3 campaigns, Contracts, Escalations, Elusive Target Arcades, Freelancer, Sniper Assassin, featured live content, the Hitman 2 Expansion Pack, and the Hitman 3 Deluxe Pack. IO Interactive describes it as more than 100 hours of content, while Shacknews counted 25 maps in the package. Freelancer is a roguelike mode that can add hundreds of hours for players who enjoy planning around permanent losses and changing objectives.

World of Assassination is vastly larger. IO Interactive’s current location listing says 21-plus locations, and its Signature Edition description claims over 100 hours. Absolution is a shorter, story-led campaign; its replay value comes from alternate routes, difficulty levels, challenge completion, score chasing, and Contracts rather than dozens of giant maps.

The larger package is only better if you want to revisit maps and learn their systems. If you prefer a beginning-to-end thriller that you can finish without maintaining a live-service routine, Absolution’s smaller scale is an advantage.

How do the games work on the original Nintendo Switch?
Absolution is a native Feral Interactive port. It installs as a full local game, runs at about 30 frames per second, and keeps its campaign available without a connection. Nintendo Life reported minor hitches in dense crowds and reduced textures and assets, while still describing the result as handsome. Contracts requires online access.
World of Assassination on the original Switch is not a local port. It is a cloud-streaming client that requires a persistent connection and downloaded only about 66 MB, according to Game Informer. The streamed image can resemble the versions on other consoles, but your experience depends on latency, bandwidth, and the service remaining available. Game Informer found intact crowds in Miami, loose and imprecise aiming, and very small handheld text, recommending a gun-free stealth approach.

What changes on Nintendo Switch 2?
Switch 2 turns the comparison into native game versus native game. Absolution: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launched on 22 October 2026 with higher output resolutions, improved effects and animation, a Performance preset targeting 60 fps, and Joy-Con 2 mouse support. World of Assassination Signature Edition launched natively in the Switch 2 window, but its initial unlocked frame rate was uneven and its full progression still depended on online services.
Absolution: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Feral’s listed improvements include increased resolution in handheld and TV modes, richer environments, improved shadows, cloth and distant-crowd animation, better level-of-detail treatment, texture filtering, and depth of field. Reported maximum outputs are up to 1620p docked and up to 1080p handheld, compared with 1080p and 720p on the original Switch. The Performance preset targets 60 fps, but reports caution that busy scenes may not hold that target steadily. No independent measured Switch 2 frame-rate review was available at launch, so treat 60 fps as the advertised target rather than a guaranteed lock.
Joy-Con 2 mouse control is the distinctive hardware feature: slide a Joy-Con on a flat surface to aim. The Switch 2 release includes Contracts on day one, allowing up to three targets to be marked inside story maps, shared, and compared on online leaderboards. Feral has described the mode as cross-platform.

World of Assassination: Signature Edition
World of Assassination is native rather than streamed, with roughly 1080p docked and 720p handheld output reported by GameSpot and Nintendo Life. At launch the frame rate was uncapped and fluctuated heavily; Nintendo Life reported docked drops into the 30s. Handheld play can feel smoother because the Switch 2 display supports variable refresh, while many televisions do not.
There is no in-game performance preset at launch. Digital Foundry measured the effect of changing the Switch 2 system TV output: an average of 40.45 fps at 4K, 46.88 fps at 1080p, and 59.93 fps at 720p. Its 720p setting was 62.5% ahead of 4K and 48.2% faster than 1080p. This is a system-output workaround, not a game menu option, and it lowers the output resolution.
Patch 3.230.1, released on 26 August 2025, fixed auto-save crashes, overly bright stealth lighting and advertising, Instinct highlighting problems, and frame-rate drops facing large bathroom mirrors at 4K. It also added a Frame Rate option enabled by default. Nintendo Life reported that this option locks the game at 30 fps for a generally steadier result; the unlocked option remains available if you prefer higher but jitterier performance. HDR in handheld was reported as overly bright in some scenes, and disabling HDR in system settings can improve map readability.
Can you play either game offline?
Absolution’s story is the safer portable choice. Once installed, its campaign does not require a server; only Contracts, sharing, and leaderboards are online features.
World of Assassination’s complete experience is online-dependent even though the Switch 2 game runs locally. GameSpot described offline play as heavily diluted because progression, rewards, challenges, and mastery are missing. Nintendo Life also reported separate online and offline save progress at launch, meaning a session without data does not update the online file. Do not assume that Switch 2 participates in IO Interactive’s later cross-progression rollout; that inclusion was not confirmed.

This distinction matters more than resolution. A native install does not make World of Assassination an airplane-friendly game if you expect unlocks and mastery to carry back into your online profile.

Prices below are the published North American, UK, and European figures available in November 2026. Digital storefront prices and promotions can change; the current World of Assassination sale price was not stated.

If you already own Absolution on Switch, claim the Switch 2 Upgrade Pack by 4 November 2026 to avoid the later charge. The published dates are based on the later Feral public-relations summary and Nintendo Life price notice, which supersede earlier conflicting date and discount wording.

Limited Run’s Absolution Standard Edition is a full Game Card, case, and eight-page booklet. The publisher says the card also works in the original Switch with the Switch version of the game. Its Switch 2 enhancements include the higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate features plus Joy-Con 2 mouse support. Pre-orders run from 30 October at 12:00 p.m. ET through 6 December at 11:59 p.m. ET, with a $49.99 MSRP.

World of Assassination Signature Edition’s retail release was reported as a game key card requiring approximately a 61 GB download. That is materially different from a full card: the card authenticates the purchase, while the game data must be downloaded. Live retail stock and street pricing were not established, so check the eShop or retailer listing before ordering.

Who should buy Absolution?
- Original Switch owners without reliable internet: Absolution is the local game; World of Assassination is cloud-only on that hardware.
- Players who want a complete 2012 story: Its personal, cinematic structure is intentional, not an unfinished version of the reboot.
- People who value portability: The campaign works offline after installation.
- Mouse-aim enthusiasts: Switch 2 adds Joy-Con 2 mouse support, which World of Assassination does not provide according to launch reviews.

If you already own World of Assassination on PlayStation 5 or PC, reviewers including Shacknews and GameSpot advise against buying the Switch 2 port solely for another copy. Portability can justify it when Switch 2 is your only practical system, but the always-online requirement weakens the usual handheld advantage.
How should you decide in one minute?
- Choose Absolution if you have the original Switch, need offline play, prefer a focused campaign, want mouse aiming, or require a genuine Game Card.
- Choose World of Assassination Signature Edition if you have Switch 2, want the reboot trilogy, and will replay large maps for mastery, challenges, Freelancer, and live modes.
- If frame-rate consistency matters most on Switch 2, use World of Assassination’s 30 fps Frame Rate option rather than its unstable unlocked mode. Absolution’s Performance preset targets 60 fps, but its launch reporting does not establish a locked result.
- If you own Absolution on Switch, claim the free upgrade before 4 November 2026; otherwise the Upgrade Pack becomes paid from 5 November.
World of Assassination is the modern Hitman to choose for scale and systemic freedom, but its Switch 2 port asks you to accept uneven performance and online progression. Absolution is the better Nintendo-specific fit when local ownership, portability, a physical card, or the 2012 campaign matters more than content volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Limited Run Absolution card work in the original Switch?
Yes. Limited Run Games says its Switch 2 Game Card also functions on the original Switch and plays the Switch version. It is therefore a different physical proposition from World of Assassination’s reported key-card release, which needs a large download.
Can I carry World of Assassination progress from another platform to Switch 2?
Do not assume that you can. IO Interactive has described a broader account and cross-progression refresh, but Switch 2’s inclusion was not confirmed in the available information. Treat the Nintendo version as a separate progression destination unless the account screen explicitly says otherwise.
Why is the original Switch World of Assassination download only 66 MB?
That small download is the streaming client, not the complete game. The rendering and game data run remotely, so the title needs a persistent connection and is vulnerable to latency, bandwidth limits, and service availability.
Does Absolution’s Contracts mode work without internet?
No. The story campaign is local, but creating, sharing, and ranking Contracts uses online services. On Switch 2, Contracts is included at launch; offline play should be understood as campaign play rather than the complete feature set.
