When an AI agent reaches a weekly usage limit, do not abandon the task or keep retrying blindly. First check the account-specific allowance and reset time in Settings → Usage (or run /status in Codex CLI), then capture the task state in a short handoff note. Let an already-running turn finish if it can, and only then choose among waiting, an offered reset, added credits, or an upgrade. The correct option depends on your plan, workload, model, and the controls shown for your account.

This workflow applies specifically to ChatGPT Work and Codex. They can share an allowance, but Work and Codex present different histories and working environments. A precise handoff preserves decisions, files, constraints, and the next action so you can continue without asking the agent to rediscover the task.

What should I do the moment the weekly limit appears?

Stop starting new prompts until you know whether the message refers to a five-hour window, a weekly window, or another account restriction. Use this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Finish or observe the current turn. If a Codex turn is already running, it may continue after the limit is reached, subject to fair-use controls. Do not cancel a productive turn merely because a banner appeared.
  2. Check the account status. Open Settings → Usage in Work or the usage area shown by the limit banner. In Codex CLI, run /status. Record the remaining allowance, the reset time, and any displayed choices.
  3. Write a handoff before switching tasks or contexts. Include the goal, current state, completed work, decisions, constraints, open questions, relevant files or links, and the next action.
  4. Keep the note where the work will resume. Use the same Work conversation when possible. For Codex, keep it in the relevant project or repository context and retain the exact file paths and commands needed for the next turn.
  5. Choose an account option only after reading its timing. Waiting, adding credits, upgrading, redeeming a banked reset, or buying an instant reset can have different eligibility and schedule effects.

The account usage page is the authoritative source for your allowance and reset time; limits vary with plan, model, task size, and settings. The documented usage guidance is available from OpenAI’s Work and Codex usage page.

How do I check which limit I reached?

Use the usage display rather than inferring a limit from a single failed prompt. Work and Codex may share an allowance, while the available work and window lengths depend on your account.

Check in ChatGPT Work

  1. Open the account or workspace settings.
  2. Select Usage.
  3. Read the remaining allowance and the next reset time. If a banner offers a specific action, expand it before accepting anything.
  4. Note whether the notice identifies a weekly window, a shorter five-hour window, or a plan-specific restriction.

Check in Codex CLI

  1. Open the same project environment in which the task was running.
  2. Run /status.
  3. Record the usage information and reset timing printed by the command.
  4. Compare that information with the account’s Usage page if the two displays appear different; the account page and current banner determine what you can actually select.

Do not treat a stated weekly limit as universal. Two accounts can see different allowances for the same model because plan, workload, settings, and fair-use controls affect availability. The usage documentation describes these variables at Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex.

Can an active AI-agent turn continue after the limit?

Sometimes. An active Codex turn may finish after the limit is reached, within fair-use limits; a new turn usually requires you to consult the account’s available options. Let the running operation complete if its output is useful, then save that output in the handoff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the turn ends, copy the final response, changed-file summary, test results, error messages, and any proposed next step into your note. If the operation is editing a repository, verify the resulting files before leaving the environment. Do not assume that a partial response means the underlying work was saved, and do not claim completion merely because the agent stopped responding.

The distinction between a running turn and a new request is described in Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan. The same page explains that post-limit choices are account-specific, so a banner that appears for one user may not appear for another.

What should a good handoff note contain?

A handoff is a compact restart packet, not a transcript. It should let a later turn understand what to do without rereading every message or repeating completed investigation.

Use these seven fields

  • Goal: the observable outcome you are trying to deliver.
  • Current state: what is true now, including the last successful action.
  • Completed: files changed, commands run, research checked, or decisions already made.
  • Constraints and decisions: required versions, interfaces, security rules, style choices, exclusions, and rejected alternatives.
  • Open items: unresolved questions, failing tests, missing access, or choices awaiting approval.
  • Relevant files and links: exact paths, branch names, issue identifiers, and source URLs.
  • Next action: one concrete operation the next turn should perform first.

For a reusable note, keep the following structure in a text file or at the end of the Work conversation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Goal: {{one_sentence_goal}}
Current state: {{what_is_true_now}}
Completed:
- {{completed_step_or_file}}
- {{completed_step_or_file}}
Constraints/decisions:
- {{required_rule_or_decision}}
Open items:
- {{unresolved_question_or_failure}}
Relevant files/links:
- {{exact_path_or_url}}
Next action: {{first_operation_for_the_next_turn}}

Replace every double-curly field with factual content before handing the task over. Include evidence for a failure, such as the exact command and error text, rather than a label such as “it does not work.” If no files were changed, say so explicitly; that prevents the next agent from searching for nonexistent edits.

Where should I save the handoff so the next turn can use it?

Keep the note in the same context whenever practical, but account for the different continuity models of Work and Codex.

Context What carries across Best place for the handoff Important boundary
ChatGPT Work Cloud Work chats synchronize across web, mobile, and desktop. The existing Work conversation, with the note as the latest message or an attached text document. Switching devices does not turn a separate Codex history into a Work conversation.
Codex Codex has its own view and history and can work with local folders, repositories, terminals, and developer tools. The relevant Codex conversation plus a project-local handoff file tracked or stored with the work, when appropriate. Codex history is separate from Work history; preserve local paths and environment details yourself.

Work’s cross-device synchronization and Codex’s separate history are documented in ChatGPT Work and Codex. The guidance does not promise that every local artifact, terminal session, or uncommitted change will be available in a later environment, so record enough information to recreate the state.

What can I do after the active turn ends?

Compare the choices shown for your account on four questions: can you continue immediately, are you eligible, what allowance or credit does it consume, and does it change the next weekly reset?

Option When it makes sense What to verify first Timing effect
Wait for the scheduled reset The work is not urgent or no immediate option is offered. Exact reset date and time, including the account’s time display. Leaves the normal schedule unchanged.
Add credits The account offers additional usage and you need limited extra work. How many credits are added, which products or windows they cover, and whether they expire. Usually follows the terms shown in the account UI; no universal behavior is documented.
Upgrade Your workload regularly exceeds the current plan. New allowance, eligibility, billing timing, and whether the current task becomes available immediately. Depends on the plan terms displayed before confirmation.
Paid instant reset An eligible personal Plus or Pro account needs immediate access. Price, eligibility, what allowance is restored, and the new weekly-period rule. Applies immediately; the next weekly period starts with the first Work or Codex request after the reset.
Banked reset A separate one-time reset is available on the account. Whether one is available, its expiration, and how to redeem it. Offer-specific; confirm the resulting schedule before use.

There is no universal price or eligibility comparison. The options exposed by the limit banner and Usage settings are the deciding evidence. Read the confirmation screen instead of assuming that “reset” means the same thing as “extra credits.”

How does a paid instant reset change the weekly schedule?

For an eligible Plus or Pro personal account, a paid instant reset can restore access immediately and pull the normal weekly allowance forward. The next weekly period begins with the first Work or Codex request made after the reset, so buying one can move your future reset date.

Before confirming, note the displayed price and schedule. If you reset and then wait several days before making another request, the documented rule still ties the new weekly period to the first request after the reset, not simply to the purchase timestamp. Availability and terms can change by account, so use the details shown in the purchase flow and the guidance at Paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets.

What is a banked reset, and when should I use it?

A banked reset is a separate, one-time benefit that may already be available to your account. It is not the same as purchasing an instant reset and may have an expiration date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Usage settings or run the Codex status command to look for a reset balance or redemption control.
  2. Read the expiration and eligibility text before spending it.
  3. Check whether redemption is immediate and whether it affects the next weekly period.
  4. Redeem it only when the immediate access is worth consuming a one-time benefit.

Offers and eligibility vary. The redemption behavior and expiration rules are described in How resets work in Codex; do not infer that an unused banked reset will remain available indefinitely.

How do I resume the task safely after the limit resets?

Start the next turn by making the agent acknowledge the handoff, then proceed in small verifiable increments.

  1. Paste or open the handoff note in the same Work conversation or Codex project context.
  2. Ask for a one-paragraph restatement of the goal, current state, constraints, and next action.
  3. Check the exact files, branch, and environment named in the note before editing.
  4. Run the smallest validation that distinguishes the open alternatives, such as a targeted test or a read-only inspection.
  5. Perform the next action from the note, not a broader rewrite.
  6. Update the note after each meaningful decision or completed step.

This sequence limits duplicated work and exposes a stale assumption early. If the reset occurs after a long pause, recheck time-sensitive account settings and any external links instead of treating the old note as current.

What should I do if the reset option is missing?

A missing control does not prove that the account is broken. It can mean the plan is ineligible, the offer has expired, the allowance has not reset, or the account is showing a different window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Usage page and banner disagree: refresh both, record the exact wording, and follow the account-level Usage display rather than a cached message.
  • No paid reset appears: check whether the account is a qualifying personal Plus or Pro account; availability is not universal.
  • A banked reset is absent: look for its expiration or redemption status in Usage and Codex status. It may not have been offered to the account.
  • The turn stopped midway: preserve the partial response and inspect the files or logs before restarting. A new prompt may repeat work or overwrite a useful intermediate result.
  • The next turn lacks context: move the handoff into the same Work chat or add it to the Codex project, then include exact paths and the last known command.

If the account still reports an unexpected restriction after the displayed reset time, retain screenshots or the exact banner text and contact account support through the available help channel. Avoid creating repeated prompts while the status is unclear.

How can I avoid losing work before the next limit?

Make state capture part of the workflow rather than an emergency reaction. After every major milestone, update a short note with what changed and what remains. For code, record the branch, changed files, test command, result, and whether changes are committed. For a Work analysis, record the conclusion, supporting links, assumptions, and the decision still needed.

  • Ask the agent to summarize state before beginning a long multi-step operation.
  • Break a large request into milestones with observable outputs.
  • Keep generated artifacts in a known folder or conversation attachment.
  • Copy important URLs exactly, including paths and hyphens.
  • Do not rely on memory for rejected approaches; record why they were rejected.
  • When a limit warning appears, stop broad exploration and finish the smallest useful checkpoint.

These practices are continuity safeguards, not an official required template. They follow from the fact that Work history and Codex history are separate and that local development state may not automatically follow you to another environment.

Does the same handoff work for every AI agent?

No. The note format is portable, but limits, context retention, reset rules, and file access differ by product. This guide’s allowance and reset behavior is specific to ChatGPT Work and Codex; another agent may have per-request, daily, seat-based, or token limits instead.

For a different product, keep the general fields but replace the account-check step with that product’s own usage screen and document whether it retains conversation history, local files, tool sessions, or environment variables. Never assume that an agent can resume from a pasted summary if the underlying files or permissions are unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from Work to Codex and keep the same conversation?

No automatic merge is established between the two histories. Work chats synchronize across web, mobile, and desktop, while Codex has a separate view and history; carry the handoff note and relevant files across deliberately.

Will using a paid reset delete my previous chats or project files?

The reset guidance explains allowance and scheduling, not deletion of conversations or local files. Treat the reset as an access change and keep your own copy of important notes, files, and uncommitted edits.

How early should I create a handoff note?

Create one before a long operation reaches a limit, then refresh it after each milestone. A note written while the task state is visible is more accurate than reconstructing commands and decisions after an interrupted turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two people on the same plan see different usage limits?

Available work depends on the account’s plan, model, workload, settings, and fair-use controls. The Usage page and current limit banner are the only reliable way to know a particular account’s allowance and reset time.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
