Hisense H8F: At First Glance

Hisense is one of the most popular names when it comes to manufacturing 4K TVs. They are best known for offering solid 4K TVs that are not only affordable but also have great qualities.

In 2019, this brand had one of its best entries in the television market with the introduction of the Hisense H8F. The Hisense H8F comes in different sizes which include 50-inch, 65-inch, and the 55-inch Hisense H8F which this review is about.

The Hisense H8F 55-inch is a smart TV that comes with an excellent 4K display and a good number of ports. Impressively, this television is quite affordable.

To be more specific, this TV had a price tag of $499 in January 2022, when I published this article. However, apart from its inexpensive price tag, does the Hisense H8F come with enough features to entice buyers?

Hisense H8F: Design, Dimension, and Weight

When it comes to the design, the Hisense H8F features a very simple yet sleek design that appeals to the eyes. To give more details, this TV comes with thin bezels at the sides and top of its display.

However, the bottom bezel is relatively thicker than the others. The reason for this thickness is to give enough room for the white “Hisense” logo that is placed in the center.

This logo gives the television an appealing look when viewed from the front. Before proceeding, it is worth noting that the display bezels have a matte black finish.

Moving on, the Hisense H8F comes with two thin V-shaped feet positioned near each other. The thin nature of these feet shouldn’t be a source of worry because of their metallic build.

Basically, the metallic build of the feet makes them sturdy and reliable. Moreover, because the feet are close to each other, the Hisense H8F can be placed on a small tabletop.

Moving on to the back, the Hisense H8F features a simple plain plastic back panel with a black finish. Some of the TV’s ports are located directly on this back panel, while some are side-facing.

Therefore, the ports that are side-facing will be accessible easily whether the TV is on a table or wall-mounted. Speaking of wall-mounting, the Hisense H8F features four 300 x 200 mm VESA compatible holes for mounting it on the wall.

Moreover, the TV’s back isn’t particularly thick. What this means is that the Hisense H8F will look just nice if mounted on the wall.

That said, now let us discuss the television’s dimension and weight. The Hisense H8F measures 1229.3 x 71.1 x 713.7 mm (W x D x H) and weighs only 13517.0 g.

Honestly, for a 55-inch television, the Hisense H8F isn’t heavy. In fact, this TV is lighter than most 55-inch televisions out there.

For instance, one of its closest competing TVs, the TCL 55US57 weighs more. Specifically, the TCL 55US57 measures 1244.6 x 88.9 x 721.3 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 14378.8 g.

In summary, the Hisense H8F features a good design and thin bezels. Also, this television weighs less than most 55-inch televisions out there.

As a result, I will rate the Hisense H8F a nine out of ten in this design review section.

Hisense H8F: Display Features

The Hisense H8F employs a 55-inch ULED display that offers a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. Thanks to its 4K UHD resolution, this display should be able to deliver realistic, colorful, and detailed images.

Besides, a 4K resolution display is about four times better, clearer, and sharper than the conventional HD display.

That said, despite featuring a 4K resolution, the Hisense H8F’s display comes with an outstanding contrast ratio. To be more specific, this television has a contrast ratio of 5,989:1.

You might be wondering what contrast ratio is. Well, let me explain.

Contrast ratio is the ratio between the darkest black and brightest white that a display is capable of producing. Moreover, a high contrast ratio means that the display will be able to produce richly-deep blacks.

Therefore, since the Hisense H8F’s display’s 5,989:1 contrast ratio is practically high, it should be able to deliver deep, detailed blacks. As a result, films with plenty of shadowy or dark scenes will be appealing to watch on the Hisense H8F.

Impressively, the Hisense H8F’s display supports local dimming. Wondering what local dimming is?

Local dimming is a technique that displays uses to improve their contrast ratio by dimming backlights behind their layers.

That said, for a TV less than $500, the Hisense H8F’s display offers a decent brightness. Specifically, this television’s display comes with a peak brightness of 526 nits.

Therefore, you will be able to see clearly when viewing the Hisense H8F in a bright or moderately-lit room. In addition to its impressive brightness, the Hisense H8F’s display supports HDR formats such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma).

For clarity, HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a technique that strengthens the picture quality, brightness, and contrast of a display.

Moving on, the Hisense H8F’s display comes with a semi-gloss coating that prevents reflection. However, this semi-gloss coating does not entirely prevent reflection from the display, but it does a good job.

To give more details, in a moderately-lit room, the semi-gloss coating works well and prevents reflection effectively. However, in a very bright or well-lit area, this semi-gloss coating might struggle to prevent reflection.

Unfortunately, the Hisense H8F’s display has poor viewing angles. Consequently, the picture quality of the display will begin to reduce when viewing the television from the sides or extreme angles.

Therefore, I recommend you view the Hisense H8F directly from the center to get a satisfying viewing experience.

In addition to its poor viewing angles, this television’s display comes with a poor response time of 23.8 milliseconds. Therefore, watching fast-motion content like car races or action movies won’t be particularly enjoyable on the Hisense H8F.

Just in case you are wondering, response time is the amount of time that it takes a display to transition from one color to another.

On a positive note, this TV’s display comes with a low input lag of 13.9 milliseconds, which makes it ideal for gaming. Input lag is the amount of time that it takes a display to register a signal input – for example, input from a game console.

In conclusion, apart from its poor response time and viewing angles, there isn’t anything to hate about the Hisense H8F’s display. Therefore, I strongly believe the Hisense H8F deserves a nine out of ten in this display review section.

Hisense H8F: Sound Features

Unlike most Hisense 4K TVs, the Hisense H8F’s sound department is nothing to write home about. To give more details, this television is equipped with a pair of 10-watts speakers that offer boring sound output.

To make things even worse, these speakers aren’t loud enough. Therefore, the Hisense H8F isn’t ideal for a large room setting.

On a positive note, this television supports Dolby Digital Plus. The presence of this sound technology helps improve the surrounding sounds that the Hisense H8F’s speakers produce.

However, watching content or playing music with lots of bass on the Hisense H8F wouldn’t be the best move. This is due to the television’s lack of a subwoofer.

Therefore, you might need to purchase a soundbar to improve the bass production of the TV.

Moving on, the Hisense H8F’s performance on a THD test further shows the poor state of its sound department. Before bringing in the test results, let me explain what the THD test means.

THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test is a test that measures the amount of distortion that a speaker or sound system can produce. Moreover, on this test, the acceptable score is 1% or less.

Unfortunately, the Hisense H8F delivers a score of 6.85%, which is way above the acceptable score of 1%. Therefore, even at a moderate volume level, distortion will be a major issue when viewing the Hisense H8F.

In case you are wondering, distortion is the deformation of sound at different levels of frequency. Basically, distortion is the alteration of a sound system’s output, resulting in a less appealing sound output.

Based on its terrible sound performance, I will rate the Hisense H8F a seven out of ten in this sound review section.

Hisense H8F: Ports and Connectivity Features

Like most Hisense TVs, the Hisense H8F features a decent number of ports. To give more detail, this television features four HDMI ports, one of which supports ARC (Audio Return Channel).

Therefore, using the ARC-supported HDMI port, you will be able to connect a soundbar to the Hisense H8F. Moreover, three of these HDMI ports including the ARC-supported HDMI port are on the right side of the television.

Also, two USB ports, a digital audio out, and an RF port for connecting an antenna are on the TV’s right side. The remainder of the television’s ports is directly on the TV’s back.

These ports include one HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a headphone/microphone jack. Other ports on the back panel of this TV include a composite video input with L/R audio and one RCA composite video input.

When it comes to wireless connectivity, the Hisense H8F comes with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WIFI and Bluetooth 5.0.

As one would expect, the Hisense H8F comes with remote control. However, unlike most affordable TVs, the Hisense H8F offers a voice remote control.

This voice remote control features a matte black finish and has a curved back which allows it to sit perfectly on your palm. Moreover, at the center of this remote control, there is a square-shaped navigation button.

Above this navigation button, you will find a full number pad. Below the navigation button, however, you will see the channel and volume rockers.

Also, there is a Google Assitant button as well as four dedicated buttons for streaming apps on this remote control. The streaming apps with a dedicated button on this remote include Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, and Google Play.

That said, as expected from a voice remote control, the Hisense H8F’s remote features an in-built microphone. Therefore, to use the voice control feature, you just have to speak into this microphone when holding down on the Google Assistant button.

In conclusion, the Hisense H8F features quite a number of ports as well as a voice remote control. Therefore, I will rate this television a nine out of ten in this section.

Hisense H8F: Smart Features

The Hisense H8F comes with the Andriod TV version 8.0 operating system. This OS offers a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate.

Impressively, the interface of this operating system is completely ad-free. Therefore, you won’t be distracted by annoying ad popups when trying to select a movie on the interface.

That’s not all, this Andriod TV operating system offers numerous streaming services. These streaming services include Youtube, Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, and so on.

Moreover, if you desire more streaming services, you can simply download a wide variety of them via the Google Play Store.

Impressively, the Hisense H8F comes with an in-built Chromecast. This Chromecast allows you to mirror content from your smart device such as a smartphone to the television.

In conclusion, the Hisense H8F offers a lag-free, ad-free operating system. Moreover, this operating system comes with various streaming apps.

Therefore, I will rate the Hisense H8F a nine out of ten in this smart features review section.
