Jefferies kept its Buy rating on Hindustan Zinc but cut its target price from ₹750 to ₹650 after the company’s September-quarter results. The downgrade was not a reaction to a weak quarter: Hindustan Zinc reported a 142% year-over-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹6,412 crore and revenue growth of 77% to ₹15,093 crore. Jefferies instead reduced its future silver-price assumptions, lowered its FY28–FY29 earnings estimates and warned that higher interest rates could pressure the shares in the near term.
The headline 4% rise describes the opening move on October 21, 2026, when the stock opened at ₹559.85 versus a previous close of ₹538.40. It did not finish higher: shares fell to an intraday low of ₹520.60 and closed at ₹525, down 2.5% for the session.
What did Hindustan Zinc report for Q2 FY27?
Hindustan Zinc’s October 19, 2026 company release showed a sharp improvement in the quarter ended September 2026. Net profit reached ₹6,412 crore, up 142% from a year earlier, while revenue from operations rose 77% to ₹15,093 crore.

The company attributed the stronger revenue to higher metal prices, increased metal output, better by-product realizations and a stronger dollar. Lower zinc production costs also supported profitability.

There is an unresolved discrepancy in the company release’s EBITDA figures. Its narrative gives quarterly EBITDA of ₹9,285 crore and a 62% margin, while the financial-summary table lists EBITDA as ₹9,258 crore. Both figures are reproduced in the release; the difference should not be treated as reconciled until Hindustan Zinc clarifies it.
Why did Jefferies cut the target price despite the strong quarter?
A quarterly result records what has already happened, whereas a broker target price reflects expected future earnings, commodity prices and valuation. Jefferies reportedly said September-quarter EBITDA was 8% above its estimate, helped by lead-concentrate sales and lower production costs. Its lower ₹650 target therefore reflects a more cautious forward view, not a claim that Q2 missed expectations.
Silver assumptions became more conservative
As reported by The Economic Times and Business Standard, Jefferies cut its silver-price assumption to $50 for the balance of FY27 and for FY28 and FY29, compared with a reported spot price of about $58 at the time. Silver is an important by-product for Hindustan Zinc, so a lower assumed price reduces the revenue and profit that the broker assigns to future periods.

Jefferies still described its medium-term view on silver as constructive. The Economic Times reproduced the brokerage’s statement: “Our global analysts remain constructive on silver over medium term, as mounting fiscal pressures and inflation risks support precious metals.” That is Jefferies’ outlook, not a guaranteed market forecast.
Interest rates add a near-term valuation risk
The brokerage also cited silver-price volatility and the possibility that higher interest rates could weigh on the shares in the near term. Higher rates can reduce investors’ willingness to pay for cyclical companies and make future cash flows less valuable, even when current operating results are strong.
How did Jefferies change its earnings estimates?
The estimate revisions differed by fiscal year, which helps explain why a positive Q2 assessment coexisted with a lower target.

Jefferies reportedly assumed lead prices of $1,850–$1,875 for those periods, broadly in line with the spot level near $1,850 cited at the time. These are time-specific brokerage assumptions, not current spot prices or promised outcomes.

The price reaction changed during the session, so the opening move and closing return must be separated.
- The previous close was ₹538.40.
- The stock opened at ₹559.85, an increase of about 4% from that close.
- It later fell to an intraday low of ₹520.60.
- It finished at ₹525, down 2.5% for the day.
Thus, saying that Hindustan Zinc “jumped 4%” is accurate only for the opening move. It is inaccurate if it implies the stock ended the session 4% higher.

Does the lower target mean Jefferies turned bearish?
No. Jefferies retained its Buy rating while reducing the numerical target. A rating expresses the broker’s directional view relative to its benchmark or valuation framework; a target price is the estimated value assigned under particular earnings and commodity assumptions. Investors should read the two together rather than treating a target reduction as an automatic change to Sell.
The reported ₹650 target was published after the Q2 FY27 results in October 2026. Targets can change when silver, zinc, lead, exchange rates, interest rates or valuation multiples move, so it should not be presented as a fixed value or as a guarantee of a future price.

Why can a broker raise one year’s EPS estimate and cut later years?
A strong completed quarter can improve the near-term earnings base, while lower assumed commodity prices can reduce profits in later forecast years. Analysts often revise each fiscal period separately rather than applying one change to every year.
What does silver volatility mean for Hindustan Zinc shareholders?
Silver is produced as a by-product, so its realized price affects revenue and margins even when mined and refined zinc volumes are stable. Large price swings make future cash-flow estimates less predictable.
