That foundation comes from Barker’s novella, but the first film is not a scene-for-scene transcription. Barker’s official account says the movie is based on The Hellbound Heart yet is “quite a distance from it.” Treat the book, the 1987 film, the early sequel, and later reinventions as related continuities rather than one perfectly consistent rulebook.

Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart is the literary source for Hellraiser. They do not regard pleasure and pain as clean opposites. Sensation, physical transformation, and the rearrangement of flesh are all part of the territory they investigate. Their horror comes partly from that indifference to human categories: what a person calls suffering may be, to a Cenobite, a legitimate form of revelation.
