There is no single “healthy number of gaming hours” for every child. For infants and one-year-olds, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends no sedentary screen time. At ages two to four, it recommends no more than one hour of total sedentary screen time per day, with less being better; playing computer games counts toward that total. For children five and older, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidance published in February 2026 favors an individualized family media plan over a universal daily gaming limit. The practical test is whether gaming fits around sleep, physical activity, school, relationships and the child’s wellbeing.

What are the screen-time rules for each age?

Use the age ranges below as guardrails, not as a promise that a particular number of minutes is safe for every child. WHO guidance is explicit for children under five, while current AAP guidance for older children asks families to balance media with the rest of life.

Age What the guidance says How to apply it to gaming
Under 1 WHO recommends no sedentary screen time. Do not create a gaming allowance. Prioritize talking, responsive caregiving, floor play and movement.
1 year WHO recommends no sedentary screen time, including computer games. Keep games off the routine; video calls with a caregiver are a different, interactive use of media.
2–4 years WHO sets a ceiling of one hour of sedentary screen time per day, and says less is better. The hour covers all sedentary screens—TV, videos, tablets and games together. It is not one hour of gaming plus other screen use.
5 years Do not extend the WHO under-five ceiling automatically to every five-year-old. Use an individual family plan. Protect sleep, active play, learning and interaction first; then decide whether gaming fits.
6–12 years Current AAP guidance does not set a universal gaming-hour number. Set predictable times and stopping rules around school, friends, family, sleep and daily activity. Check content and the child’s response.
13–17 years Continue a collaborative plan that addresses sleep, online contact, spending, privacy and self-regulation. Judge the pattern by functioning and harm, not by labeling a long session as a disorder.

WHO’s under-five recommendations come from its 2019 guideline on physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep (WHO guideline). They are separate from the AAP’s U.S.-focused policy. Combining them into one rule for every age would be misleading.

Does the one-hour rule include video games?

Yes. For ages two through four, WHO’s one-hour ceiling is for total sedentary screen time, and computer games are included. If a preschooler watches 40 minutes of cartoons and plays for 30 minutes, the day has already exceeded that ceiling; the child does not receive a separate one-hour gaming allowance.

The recommendation is a ceiling, not a target. “Less is better” does not mean parents must eliminate every screen in every circumstance, but it does put the emphasis on active play, sleep and interaction. A short, shared game followed by movement may fit a family’s day better than several isolated sessions.

How much gaming should a 10-year-old have?

There is no current AAP rule that assigns every 10-year-old one or two hours of gaming per day. The AAP’s policy statement and technical report in the February 2026 issue of Pediatrics replaced its earlier communications-and-media guidance and moved away from a simple time-limit formula. Build a plan that leaves enough time for the child’s specific sleep, school, activity and relationship needs.

Start with non-negotiables: required sleep, schoolwork, meals, hygiene, family commitments and physical activity. Decide when gaming can occur within the remaining time, then assess whether the game’s content, online interactions and spending features are appropriate. A schedule that works on a school night may not fit a tournament weekend, and a child who handles 45 minutes calmly may need different boundaries from one who cannot stop after two hours.

How much sleep and activity must gaming leave room for?

Gaming is healthy only when it does not crowd out the sleep and movement children need. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists these sleep ranges: 10–13 hours per 24 hours for ages three to five, 9–12 hours for ages six to 12, and 8–10 hours for ages 13–17. These are sleep recommendations, not gaming allowances.

  • Children ages six to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, according to the CDC.
  • For ages three to five, CDC advises activity throughout the day rather than one single required session.
  • AAP family guidance recommends keeping bedrooms and mealtimes screen-free and beginning a screen-free period about an hour before bedtime.

In practice, a game that regularly pushes bedtime later, replaces outdoor play or makes a child too tired for school needs a shorter or earlier slot, even if the clock total looks modest.

How do you make a family gaming plan?

Write the rules before the next session, involve the child in setting them, and revisit them as needs change. AAP’s family-media approach focuses on content, context, conversation and the child’s individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all number.

  1. List protected activities. Put sleep, school, homework, meals, exercise, chores, face-to-face time and appointments on the calendar first.
  2. Choose the gaming windows. Specify when play may start and end, including whether gaming is allowed before school, after homework or on travel days.
  3. Define the stopping signal. Agree on a timer, a match boundary or a save point. AAP specifically suggests a kitchen timer as one practical way to end a session.
  4. Decide what happens at time-up. For example, the child saves progress, shuts down, and moves to a named next activity. State consequences calmly in advance rather than improvising during an argument.
  5. Set the location. A shared room makes it easier to notice content, chat and mood than a device hidden in a bedroom. Keep bedrooms and mealtimes screen-free.
  6. Agree on permitted games and contacts. Discuss ratings, themes, voice or text chat, friend requests and whether strangers can contact the child.
  7. Review the plan. Revisit it after a new game, a school change, a holiday, sleep problems or repeated conflicts. Older children can earn more control by demonstrating reliable stopping and responsible online behavior.

AAP’s “one screen at a time” advice is simple: Turn off devices not in use to reduce distractions. A phone beside a console can turn a planned session into untracked, fragmented screen use.

How should parents evaluate a game, not just its minutes?

A content rating tells you what a game contains; it does not tell you how long a child should play. Check the game yourself and consider five separate questions:

  • Content and themes: violence, fear, sexual content, language, gambling-like mechanics and realistic portrayals may matter differently at different ages.
  • Online exposure: multiplayer games can include voice chat, text chat, user-generated content and contact from strangers.
  • Spending: look for paid upgrades, random-item purchases, subscriptions and whether a payment method is stored.
  • Available controls: platform settings may limit age-rated content, play time, chat, friends and purchases. Controls support conversation; they do not replace it.
  • The child’s reaction and displacement: note whether the child can stop, recover after losing, sleep normally and return to other interests.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) explains ratings and parental controls at ESRB’s parent resources. Ratings are useful for content selection, not for calculating a healthy session length.

Are weekends or school holidays different?

They can be more flexible, but a weekend should not erase sleep, movement, family plans or agreed stopping rules. Families may allow a longer block when school is out if the child still meets sleep and activity needs and can transition without major conflict.

Plan the exception in advance: identify the start and end time, how breaks work, what online contacts are allowed and what activity follows gaming. Avoid using an all-day session to compensate for restrictions that are too rigid on weekdays; a consistent, realistic schedule is easier to follow than a cycle of deprivation and bingeing.

Is my child addicted to gaming?

Do not diagnose a gaming disorder from the number of hours alone. AAP warning signs include marked anger or irritability when media is unavailable, declining grades or family participation, lost sleep or exercise, and media becoming the child’s only enjoyable activity or conversation topic.

WHO’s gaming-disorder description is narrower: impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation despite negative consequences, with significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational or other important areas normally evident for at least 12 months. That duration describes a diagnostic pattern—not a waiting period before a parent can seek advice.

Keep a brief, factual record of sleep, school attendance, mood, conflicts and activities displaced. Discuss concerns with the child’s pediatrician; the AAP notes that a referral to a qualified mental-health professional may be appropriate. Seek help sooner if there is severe sleep loss, threats, self-harm talk, exploitation, bullying or unsafe contact online.

What should parents do when a child refuses to stop?

Make the transition predictable and address the behavior, not just the device. Give a five- or 10-minute warning, use the agreed timer, and let the child reach a safe save point when the game allows it. Keep your instruction brief, acknowledge disappointment, and move directly to the next planned activity.

Do not remove sleep, meals or exercise as punishment. If arguments remain intense or the child’s functioning is deteriorating, involve the pediatrician rather than escalating a daily power struggle.

How can parents use parental controls responsibly?

Configure controls before handing over the device, then explain what they do and why. Create a child account where available; set age-rated content limits, purchase approval, communication permissions and time windows. Disable stored payment methods or require an adult password for purchases. Check each platform separately because controls and labels differ.

Review the settings after system updates or when a child moves to a new console, phone or game. Technical limits cannot judge context, detect every harmful conversation or teach self-regulation. Pair them with regular check-ins: ask who the child plays with, what information is shared, how losing feels and whether anything online made them uncomfortable.

What is the bottom line for healthy gaming?

For under-ones, WHO recommends no sedentary screen time; for ages two to four, keep total sedentary screen time to no more than one hour daily, including games. From age five onward, use the AAP’s 2026 family-plan approach: protect sleep, activity, school and relationships, evaluate the game and online environment, and watch for functional harm. A flexible plan that a child can follow is more useful than an arbitrary number that repeatedly fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can educational video games count as screen time?

Yes. A game’s educational purpose does not remove it from sedentary screen time. For ages two to four, count it within the WHO one-hour total, and for older children judge whether it displaces sleep, movement, schoolwork or interaction.

Should parents ban games with online chat?

Not automatically, but online chat requires an explicit safety plan. Review voice and text permissions, friend lists, reporting and blocking tools, and teach the child never to share personal information or move a conversation to a private service without an adult’s knowledge.

What if my child plays much more during a vacation?

Set vacation rules before the trip, including a daily end time, breaks, sleep schedule and offline plans. A temporary increase is less concerning when the child can stop, remains connected to other activities and returns to the normal routine afterward.

Can gaming cause attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

The guidance here does not establish that gaming causes ADHD. If attention, impulsivity, sleep or school concerns persist across settings, ask a pediatrician for an evaluation instead of trying to identify a cause from gaming time alone.

Where can families find a printable media-plan template?
