No. AI has made many calculations and routine proof searches dramatically cheaper, but it has not made mathematics pointless. The work that remains difficult—and valuable—involves deciding which questions matter, translating messy situations into mathematical models, proving that an argument is valid, checking assumptions, and interpreting what a result means.

Recent results show both sides of the change. DeepMind systems reached roughly silver-medalist level on the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, while classroom experiments found that unrestricted answer-generating AI can improve practice yet leave students worse prepared for an unassisted exam. The sensible response is not to abandon mathematics, but to distinguish calculation from verification, and both from discovery and judgment.

What does “AI has made maths pointless” get wrong?

The claim treats mathematics as if it were only arithmetic or symbolic manipulation. Those are important skills, but they are one layer of mathematical work. A useful three-way distinction is:

  • Calculation: carrying out algebraic transformations, numerical computation, equation solving, or a routine search. AI is increasingly capable here.
  • Verification: checking whether each step follows, whether a formal proof compiles, and whether definitions and assumptions have been used consistently.
  • Discovery and judgment: choosing a worthwhile problem, inventing useful definitions, selecting a model, recognizing an unexpected pattern, and deciding whether a result matters.

AI changes the cost and speed of the first category. It can assist with the second when connected to formal tools. The evidence does not show reliable autonomous performance in the third. Mathematics therefore becomes less about hand-running every routine operation and more about asking good questions, supervising tools, and understanding consequences.

How good is AI at solving difficult mathematics?

AI performance on structured competitions is now genuinely impressive, but each score has a narrow meaning. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s AI Index Report 2025 records the following results.

System or study Measured result What the result supports What it does not establish
AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad Four of six problems solved; 28 points, approximately silver-medalist level AI can solve several highly structured olympiad problems under competition conditions General mathematical understanding, independent problem selection, or research-level discovery
AlphaGeometry benchmark 25 of 30 geometry problems solved; the comparison average for an IMO silver medalist was 22.9 Strong performance on a defined geometry benchmark Transfer to every area of mathematics or the ability to formulate new theories
Pardos and Bhandari, PLOS ONE (2024) 274 participants studied algebra and statistics with ChatGPT-generated or human-authored help AI-generated help can produce learning gains when evaluated and corrected That an unverified answer is dependable tutoring
Bastani and colleagues, PNAS (2025) Students with unrestricted GPT Base access scored 17% worse than controls on a later unassisted exam Easy access to answers can harm retention and independent performance That all AI tutoring is harmful; the safeguarded GPT Tutor group was statistically indistinguishable from control

An IMO score is evidence about a specific set of contest tasks. It is not a measurement of broad mathematical understanding, and it does not show that a system can decide which unsolved problem deserves years of work.

Can AI discover new mathematics by itself?

There is no demonstrated autonomous breakthrough in the evidence available here. Michael Douglas’s 2025 Harvard CMSA slides state: “Despite all the advances in AI in general and theorem proving in particular, it still seems fair to say that, as of today, Computers have discovered no new mathematics by themselves.” The date matters: this is a statement about the state of evidence at that presentation, not a claim that autonomous discovery is impossible in principle.

Discovery requires more than producing a correct string of symbols. A researcher may need to notice that an existing definition is too restrictive, invent a concept that makes several results fit together, identify a fruitful analogy, or abandon an attractive conjecture because it is unimportant. Those choices depend on context, taste, and goals that are rarely specified in a benchmark.

AI can still be part of discovery. It can search a large space of conjectures, suggest examples or counterexamples, translate an argument into a proof assistant, and expose patterns that a human then investigates. That is assisted exploration, not evidence that the system independently understands why a question matters or owns the resulting theory.

Why is verification different from an AI explanation?

A fluent explanation can be wrong, while a formally checked proof must satisfy a precise set of rules. Systems such as Lean can verify proof steps once a theorem has been formalized in the system’s language. The difficult human work may occur before that check: choosing the right statement, encoding definitions correctly, and making sure the formal theorem actually captures the intended claim.

Formal verification therefore improves reliability without removing interpretation. If an AI-generated proof compiles, that establishes correctness relative to the formal definitions and axioms used. It does not by itself establish that the definitions describe the real-world problem, that no relevant assumption was omitted, or that the theorem is useful.

For practical work, ask two separate questions: “Does every step follow?” and “Are these the right steps for the question I care about?” A computer algebra system can simplify an expression; a proof assistant can check a derivation; a mathematician still has to decide what should be simplified, formalized, or proved.

What happens when students use unrestricted AI?

The strongest warning comes from a field experiment by Hamsa Bastani, Osbert Bastani, Alp Sungu, Haosen Ge, Özge Kabakcı, and Rei Mariman, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2025. Students who could use an unrestricted GPT Base tool performed better during practice, but their average score on a later exam without the tool was 17% below the control group.

The associated 2024 SSRN version reported a 48% improvement in grades with GPT Base during practice and a 127% improvement with GPT Tutor. Those figures describe performance while assistance was available; they should not be read as equivalent gains in independent mastery. The authors summarize the central problem this way: “While generative AI has been shown to enhance productivity, its influence on learning new skills remains unclear.”

The study also tested a safeguard. GPT Tutor was supplied with correct solutions, common mistakes, and instructions to give hints rather than simply reveal answers. Students using that constrained system were statistically indistinguishable from the control group on the later unassisted assessment. The broader conclusion was an “inherent tradeoff”: access can substantially improve immediate performance while degrading learning when safeguards are absent.

Can AI tutoring improve learning when it is checked?

Yes, but quality control is essential. A 2024 PLOS ONE randomized study by Zachary A. Pardos and Shreya Bhandari assigned 274 participants to algebra and statistics topics and compared ChatGPT-generated help with help written by human tutors. The AI-supported groups achieved learning gains comparable to those receiving human-authored assistance.

That result came with a serious reliability problem: AI help failed quality checks on 32% of problems before mitigation. The researchers used self-consistency checks to reduce failures to nearly 0% for algebra and 13% for statistics. In other words, generated tutoring can be useful, but a plausible first answer is not a sufficient quality standard.

A productive tutor should expose a misconception, ask the learner to choose the next step, and provide a hint calibrated to the error. An answer-only chatbot removes the struggle that makes retrieval and problem representation stronger. For students, the safest pattern is to attempt a problem first, request a hint or error diagnosis, and only then inspect a complete solution.

What mathematics should students learn if AI can calculate?

Students still need fluency, but the emphasis shifts from performing every operation by hand to understanding operations well enough to supervise them.

Keep core representations

Algebraic manipulation, proportional reasoning, functions, probability, geometry, and basic statistics let you recognize when an AI result is dimensionally or logically impossible. Without that foundation, a polished error is difficult to detect.

Practice estimation and sanity checks

Before accepting a computed value, predict its sign, scale, and units. Check boundary cases and substitute the result back into the original equation. These quick tests often catch hallucinated algebra faster than rereading a long explanation.

Learn modeling and assumptions

Real questions rarely arrive as textbook equations. Decide which variables matter, what can be ignored, how uncertainty enters, and what data would falsify the model. AI can propose equations, but it cannot take responsibility for an assumption that changes the decision.

Write and read proofs

Proof teaches the difference between an example and a general claim, and between a persuasive explanation and a logically valid implication. Even when software checks the formal steps, humans must understand the statement being proved.

  1. Attempt first. Write the known quantities, the target, and at least one proposed method before opening the tool.
  2. Request a hint. Ask for the next question to consider or for feedback on a specific step, not the final answer.
  3. Verify independently. Recalculate with a different method, test special cases, inspect units, or use a formal checker when the claim warrants it.
  4. Explain it back. Close the tool and reproduce the argument from memory. If you cannot, you have observed a solution rather than learned the method.
  5. Record the failure. Note the exact misconception or unsupported assumption that caused trouble. That record is more useful for future practice than a saved transcript of a perfect answer.

Teachers can apply the same principle by grading the setup, assumptions, checks, and explanation rather than only the final number. A classroom policy can permit AI for brainstorming or feedback while requiring an unaided section that reveals what the student can do alone.

Will AI replace mathematicians?

Replacement is unlikely to be a single event because mathematical work contains different jobs. Routine symbolic manipulation and some proof search will require fewer human hours. More time will go to deciding which computations to run, designing robust definitions, interpreting results, and communicating limitations to people who must act on them.

Researchers who adopt AI may explore larger conjecture spaces or formalize older arguments more quickly. That advantage comes with new responsibilities: checking generated lemmas, tracking provenance, testing edge cases, and avoiding a false sense of novelty when a model recombines familiar results. A mathematician’s value increasingly includes being an effective editor and verifier of machine-generated material.

In applied fields, the central risk is often model misuse rather than arithmetic error. A statistically precise forecast can still be irrelevant if the sample is biased; an optimized design can still fail if the objective omitted a safety constraint. Mathematical judgment is what connects formal output to consequences.

How do calculators and earlier software changes put this shift in perspective?

Keith Devlin’s 2024 article for the Mathematical Association of America places AI in a longer sequence that includes mechanical calculators, electronic calculators, computers, graphing calculators, Mathematica, Maple, and Wolfram Alpha. Each tool reduced the need for some manual procedures while increasing the value of interpreting results and choosing methods.

The historical lesson is not that every transition is harmless. Students can lose essential fluency if instruction removes practice before they understand the underlying ideas. But it is also mistaken to define mathematical competence as doing by hand what a reliable tool can do faster. Competence changes when tools change; it does not disappear.

A tool that is slightly slower but reliably encourages explanation may be better for learning than a faster system that supplies polished answers. For research, a formal proof trail may matter more than conversational fluency.

So, has AI made mathematics pointless?

AI has made some mathematical procedures cheap and has raised the ceiling on automated performance in structured tasks. It has not shown that machines can reliably choose important questions, create meaningful theories without direction, or replace the human responsibility to verify and interpret results.

The practical outcome is a rebalancing: less value in treating manual calculation as the whole subject, and more value in mathematical literacy, proof, modeling, skepticism, and clear communication. If AI is used as a hint-giving, checked assistant, it can widen access to practice. If it is used as an answer vending machine, it can make performance look better while learning gets worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI solve university-level mathematics reliably?

It can solve many selected problems, but reliability varies by topic and by the need for formal justification. Treat an unverified solution as a proposal, then check definitions, assumptions, and each critical step before using it.

What is the safest way to ask a chatbot for help with homework?

Show your attempted setup and ask for one hint or an error diagnosis at a time. Afterward, close the chatbot and redo the problem unaided so you can tell whether the method, not just the answer, was learned.

Does using a proof assistant guarantee that a theorem is meaningful?

No. A proof assistant checks a formally stated proposition against its encoded rules. Humans must still decide whether the formalization matches the intended question and whether the result has mathematical or practical significance.

Could AI eventually discover new mathematics?

It could become a powerful partner in conjecture generation, counterexample search, and formalization. The current evidence, however, does not establish independent discovery of new mathematics, so claims of that achievement require proof beyond benchmark performance.
