Read a handheld APU benchmark as a controlled, sustained comparison—not as a leaderboard of CPU cores, graphics-core counts, or one peak average-FPS figure. Before comparing two results, align the power limit, resolution, graphics preset, rendering API, upscaler, frame generation, operating system, drivers, game build and test duration. Then judge average FPS alongside 1% lows, 0.1% lows and frame-time consistency.

This method explains why a faster-looking APU can stutter, why a 30 W result is not automatically better than a 15 W result, and how to interpret Steam Deck OLED, Ryzen Z1-series and similar handheld measurements.

What does an APU specification actually tell you?

An APU combines the CPU and integrated GPU in one processor package. Its specification describes available hardware and a power envelope; it does not promise a particular frame rate in a particular game.

AMD lists the Ryzen Z1, Z1 Extreme and Z2 figures above on its product pages. Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED’s 6 nm APU, memory and power figures. CPU cores and clocks indicate general-purpose processing capacity; graphics architecture, graphics-core count and graphics clocks indicate the integrated GPU. The configurable TDP or APU-power range is the limit within which both parts must share energy.

A larger graphics-core count can help, but the game may be limited by memory bandwidth, CPU work, a power cap, thermals, drivers or the chosen resolution. Treat the specification as a description of potential, not as a game-specific result.

How do I read a handheld benchmark chart?

Start with the conditions column, not the largest FPS number. Use this sequence for every chart.

  1. Identify the exact hardware. Record the handheld model, APU, memory configuration and firmware or platform mode. Two products using the same APU can have different cooling, memory speeds, display resolutions and manufacturer power profiles.
  2. Record the power state. Note the stated TDP or APU wattage, whether the unit was plugged in or on battery, and the manufacturer performance mode. A 30 W plugged-in run and a 15 W battery run answer different questions.
  3. Check the software stack. Capture the game build, operating system, graphics driver, rendering API such as Vulkan or DirectX, and whether the run used a built-in benchmark or a repeatable gameplay route. GamersNexus places these fields beside its comparison results because each can alter the outcome.
  4. Write down the complete image pipeline. Record output resolution, internal rendering resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling mode and frame generation. Native 1280×800, 1080p with FSR Quality and 1600p with FSR Balanced are not equivalent workloads.
  5. Confirm the run is sustained. A result from the first pass can capture short-term boost behavior. Prefer a published run that states its duration and repeats the same route, then check whether clocks or FPS settle lower as power and thermal limits take effect.

If any of these fields are missing, label the comparison as limited rather than silently treating the numbers as directly interchangeable.

Which FPS numbers matter beyond the average?

Average FPS estimates total throughput over the sample. It is useful for seeing how much work the system rendered overall, but it does not show how evenly those frames arrived.

Average FPS

Use the average to identify broad performance tiers after conditions are normalized. Do not use it alone to decide whether a game feels smooth, because a short burst of high FPS can raise the average even when later frames arrive with long pauses.

1% and 0.1% lows

These statistics expose the slowest part of the run. A 1% low summarizes the slowest one percent of sampled frames; a 0.1% low focuses on an even smaller tail where severe hitches appear. They are most useful when the sampling method and run length are disclosed, because a short or inconsistent route can make the tail unstable.

Frame-time graphs

Frame time is the time required to render each frame. A flat trace means delivery is consistent; tall spikes represent visible hitches. As a reference, about 16.7 ms per frame corresponds to 60 FPS and about 33.3 ms to 30 FPS, so a sudden excursion far above the surrounding trace can feel like a pause even when the average remains high.

GamersNexus’ cited Dying Light 2 comparison illustrates the distinction: the ASUS ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 Extreme averaged 48 FPS, yet its frame-time plot contained spikes approaching 40 ms, several around 50 ms and some near 110 ms. The report described its lows as poor relative to the Deck OLED. The average answers “how much was rendered overall”; the lows and trace answer “how consistently did it arrive?”

Published example Conditions stated by the source Average Low metric or trace What it demonstrates
Steam Deck LCD, Red Dead Redemption 2 720p, Vulkan, upper-end Favor Performance preset; GamersNexus, 2024 49.7 FPS 26 FPS 0.1% low A high average can coexist with a much slower tail.
ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, Dying Light 2 Cited GamersNexus comparison, 2024 48 FPS Frame-time spikes near 40, 50 and 110 ms; lows described as poor relative to Deck OLED Higher average throughput does not guarantee smoother delivery.

Steve Burke of GamersNexus summarized the handheld-specific risk: “Lows are critical on handhelds in particular as they have historically shown on frametime plots to be spotty.”

Why can a handheld with higher average FPS still stutter?

Stutter usually appears when frame delivery is uneven, not when the arithmetic average is too low. A device can render many quick frames and then pause for a shader compilation event, asset stream, CPU scheduling delay, thermal correction or memory bottleneck. The pause contributes disproportionately to the 1% or 0.1% low and creates a visible spike in the frame-time plot.

Thermal and power behavior can also change during a run. GamersNexus notes that some handhelds score highly on initial passes and settle lower once power and thermal limits clamp down. A chart that does not state duration can therefore reward launch-burst behavior instead of the performance a player sees after sustained play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When two results disagree, read them in this order: eliminate non-matching test conditions, prefer sustained over launch-burst data, compare average FPS for throughput, inspect lows and frame-time plots for smoothness, then consider power draw, battery state, fan noise, thermals and image quality.

How should I compare 15 W and 30 W results?

Compare equal power limits when the question is which APU is more efficient or faster at the same envelope. If the limits differ, present the result as performance at different power levels rather than as a direct hardware ranking.

Platform or APU Published power range Interpretation
Ryzen Z1 9–30 W configurable TDP Can be configured across a wide range; a 15 W result and a 30 W result are different operating points.
Ryzen Z1 Extreme 9–30 W configurable TDP Same nominal range, but cooling and firmware determine whether the setting is sustained.
Ryzen Z2 15–30 W configurable TDP Its published lower bound is higher, so comparisons below 15 W are not equivalent operating points.
Steam Deck OLED 4–15 W APU power Valve’s stated envelope is substantially below a 30 W handheld result.

A fair power-scaling comparison holds resolution, preset, API, upscaler, frame-generation setting, OS, drivers and route constant while changing only the power limit. Report whether the handheld was plugged in or on battery, because battery policies can impose a separate cap. Include the settled result after the stated run period, not only the first pass.

TDP is important, but it is not a quality score. More watts can buy more sustained clocks, yet the gain may be small if the game is memory- or CPU-limited, and the cost can be shorter battery life, more fan noise and higher surface temperatures.

How do shared memory and bandwidth change APU results?

Handheld APUs use one system-memory pool for CPU and GPU work. The processor cores and RDNA graphics units compete for that bandwidth, so a graphics-core increase or higher clock does not guarantee a proportional FPS increase.

AMD GPUOpen explains that reducing the memory cost of an FSR history format can be meaningful on APU hardware because both Zen CPU cores and RDNA graphics share system RAM. This is why memory speed belongs in the test notes even though it is not a standalone ranking.

Handheld in the GamersNexus comparison table Listed memory speed
Steam Deck LCD 5500 MT/s
Steam Deck OLED 6400 MT/s
ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme 6400 MT/s
Lenovo Legion Go 7500 MT/s

Use these figures to explain a bandwidth-sensitive result, not to declare a winner. Game engines, memory timings, channel configuration, driver behavior and the balance between CPU and GPU work all matter. A faster memory specification can help a constrained workload while doing little for another one.

Should I compare native resolution or FSR results?

State both the display output and the internal rendering method. Native rendering makes the GPU draw every pixel at the output resolution; an upscaler renders fewer internal pixels and reconstructs the displayed image. The two measurements answer different questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Output versus internal resolution

A 1600p panel can impose a much heavier native workload than a 1280×800 panel, even when the devices use similar silicon. Comparing native 1600p FPS with native 800p FPS is therefore a resolution comparison, not a pure APU comparison.

FSR modes

AMD GPUOpen describes FSR Balanced as a baseline intended to keep GPU work within a handheld’s sustained thermal envelope. It also describes a device-specific override for Lenovo Legion Go because its 1600p display can make FSR Quality produce an excessively high internal render resolution. Record the exact FSR mode rather than writing only “FSR enabled.”

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

AMD’s Ryzen Z-series information lists FSR and related features, but those versions are available only in select games and require developer integration. “Supports FSR” does not mean every game receives the same uplift or image quality.

Frame generation

Report generated frames separately from rendered frames. AMD GPUOpen explains that frame generation can reduce the actual render workload and fill the display cadence with interpolated frames, lowering GPU work and power draw. The underlying rendered FPS and the latency trade-off still need to be shown, because a displayed cadence containing generated frames is not equivalent to the same number of independently rendered frames.

How should I compare Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally and Legion Go benchmark results?

Compare the devices on matched operating points first, then discuss each product’s native display and practical power envelope. No single APU name establishes a universal winner.

Device reference Display or output context APU and power context Why its benchmark needs care
Steam Deck OLED 1280×800, up to 90 Hz Zen 2 4-core/8-thread, 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 4–15 W APU power Its lower power envelope makes a direct 30 W comparison misleading; 800p tests are lighter than 1080p or 1600p tests.
ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Compare at the tested output and internal resolution, not automatically at its panel maximum Zen 4, 8 cores/16 threads, 12 RDNA 3 graphics cores, 9–30 W configurable range Power mode, plugged-in state and sustained thermals can materially change results.
Lenovo Legion Go 1600p native display Device-specific rendering considerations described by AMD GPUOpen Native resolution and default FSR Quality can create a much heavier workload than 1280×800 or 1080p tests.

For a useful comparison, match the same game build, API, preset, ray-tracing state, output resolution, internal scale, upscaler, frame generation, power limit and run route. Then add battery or plugged-in state, fan and thermal behavior, operating-system and driver maturity, and image quality. Price and availability are time-sensitive and should be checked separately at publication.

What is a fair handheld benchmark checklist?

Use this checklist before accepting a chart or making your own purchasing decision:

  • Exact handheld model, APU and memory configuration are named.
  • Power limit or manufacturer performance mode is stated.
  • Battery versus plugged-in operation is identified.
  • Game build, operating system and graphics-driver versions are recorded.
  • Rendering API, graphics preset and ray-tracing setting are shown.
  • Output resolution and internal resolution are both visible.
  • Upscaler mode and frame-generation status are explicit.
  • Run duration and repeatable route or built-in benchmark are described.
  • Average FPS appears with 1% or 0.1% lows.
  • Frame-time graphs are available when smoothness is important.
  • Memory speed, thermals, fan behavior and image quality are noted where relevant.

If a chart omits several of these fields, use it for a rough indication only. Do not combine its number with a better-documented result to create a false ranking.

How do I diagnose a suspicious benchmark result?

Look for the symptom, then verify the condition most likely to explain it.

  • High average, poor feel: inspect 1% and 0.1% lows and the frame-time graph for spikes.
  • Large gap between similar APUs: check resolution, FSR mode, frame generation, API, drivers and memory speed before blaming the silicon.
  • 30 W result beats 15 W result by a large margin: treat it as a power-limit difference unless an equal-watt comparison exists.
  • 1600p handheld trails at native settings: confirm pixel workload; its higher display resolution may be the dominant variable.
  • Generated-FPS number looks unusually high: separate interpolated frames from the underlying rendered FPS and check latency notes.

How should benchmark evidence guide a buying decision?

Choose the performance target first. If you want a stable 30-FPS experience, prioritize sustained lows and a clean frame-time trace at the intended power limit rather than the highest short-run average. If you want a high-refresh experience, compare sustained average FPS only after matching resolution and image-quality settings.

For battery-focused play, compare results inside the same low-power envelope and include runtime conditions. For plugged-in performance, compare equal wattage and cooling behavior. For a high-resolution screen, budget for upscaling and evaluate its image quality rather than comparing native-resolution numbers with lower-resolution handhelds.

The most defensible conclusion is conditional: “Device A renders more at this power, resolution and setting, while Device B delivers steadier lows in this route.” That is more useful than declaring an APU universally faster from one average-FPS result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a handheld benchmark run before I trust it?

There is no single universal duration in the cited evidence. Trust a result that states its duration, uses a repeatable route and shows whether performance settled after the initial boost period; an unnamed short pass should be treated as a burst result.

Can SteamOS and Windows benchmark numbers be compared directly?

Only when the game build, driver, API, settings, power mode and route are aligned. Operating-system and driver differences can change frame pacing and performance, so label cross-OS comparisons as conditional rather than assuming the APU alone caused the gap.

Why can two handhelds with the same APU produce different lows?

Cooling capacity, firmware power policy, memory configuration, drivers, background software and display-resolution settings can change sustained clocks and frame pacing. The APU model identifies the processor, not the complete handheld platform.

Does a 90 Hz display make a benchmark faster?

No. Refresh rate describes how often the panel can update; it does not reduce the game’s rendering workload. A 90 Hz panel can make uneven frame delivery easier to notice, while the benchmark still depends on resolution, settings, power and sustained rendering performance.
