There is no single best Halls of Torment build for every character, stage, and goal. A strong setup starts with a character and mark, then pairs abilities with traits that reinforce a clear damage or survival plan; equipment should strengthen that plan or cover its weak points. This guide focuses on a stable-build snapshot checked October 7, 2026. The developer had announced a major update and DLC for later in October, so treat any advice as version-sensitive rather than a promise about post-update balance.

What makes a Halls of Torment build?

A run’s build develops from three connected parts: character traits, abilities, and items. Chasing Carrots describes creating a new build during each run, while unique items can also be sent to the overworld and used to customize later runs. The choices work best when they support one another rather than being treated as separate upgrades. The official Steam listing describes the build system and published game content.

The decision space is large: Steam lists 11 playable characters and character marks, 74 abilities and ability upgrades, 60 unique items with 240 higher-rarity variants, 25 blessings, 30 artifacts, and more than 1,000 traits. Those are published inventory figures, not a promise that everything is unlocked at the start or equally useful in every run.

How to choose a build for your run

  1. Choose your character and mark. Start with the playstyle you want and any mark-specific strengths or constraints. The store listing describes distinct character playstyles, but does not establish a universal ranking.
  2. Name the objective. Decide whether the run is about clearing a stage, surviving, killing quickly, or meeting a challenge condition. A build tuned for one goal may be a poor fit for another.
  3. Pick a damage or survival engine. Choose abilities that work toward the same broad outcome, then favor traits that improve or support those abilities. Think in terms of how damage is delivered and sustained, not just the highest-sounding individual upgrade.
  4. Use equipment to reinforce or repair. Select items that strengthen the plan or address its weakness—for example, a damage-oriented setup may need defensive support. Do not assume an item is essential if it is not unlocked; use an available option that serves the same role.
  5. Check the demands of the content. Consider the hall, mode, difficulty, and any special rules. A setup with high damage but little safety can be risky when survival is the actual condition for success.

Build example: damage-focused setup

When it fits

Use a damage-focused approach when killing efficiently is more important than maximizing safety. Choose a character and mark whose playstyle supports your chosen abilities, then take traits that amplify or sustain that damage pattern. Equip items that strengthen the engine; reserve some choices for defense if the build is vulnerable while enemies close in.

Tradeoff and adjustment

The obvious cost is survivability: investing heavily in damage can leave less room for defensive support. If you are failing because you cannot stay alive long enough to deal damage, replace a marginal damage pick with a trait or item that shores up survival rather than continuing to optimize only for output.

Build example: survival-focused setup

When it fits

Favor survival when the objective rewards staying alive or when the difficulty makes a fragile damage plan unreliable. Pick abilities and traits that support consistent performance over time, and use equipment to cover the character’s weak points.

Tradeoff and adjustment

A safer build may kill more slowly. If slow kills prevent you from meeting the run’s goal, redirect some choices toward damage while keeping enough defensive support to make the run sustainable. There is no evidence in the official sources for a numerical damage-versus-survival threshold; use the objective and your unlocks to make the trade.

Match the build to the mode and version

“Best build” changes meaning with the success condition. A stage-clear plan, a survival plan, and a kill-count target do not necessarily reward the same balance of damage, resilience, and positioning. Chasing Carrots’ March 17, 2026 preview described a planned Shrine of Torment choice between timer and kill-count completion on supported stages, records tracked separately by mode, and fixed-seed weekly challenges with predetermined stage, mode, and artifacts. The preview identified these as in-progress features; it does not establish that they were live in the stable game on October 7. See the developer’s Steam news for announcements, and check current in-game rules before building around a specific mode.

Version matters too. On October 1, 2026, Chasing Carrots announced that The Lost Archives DLC would arrive on October 22, 2026, and said experimental-branch changes to the base game and Boglands were planned before release. That announcement was forward-looking on October 7, not confirmation of stable-branch changes. Revisit a build after updates that alter traits, abilities, items, or stage rules.

How to compare two builds

When deciding between setups, compare them against the same character, hall, mode, and difficulty. Community guides can suggest combinations, but they are not verified performance rankings and may date from a different version. Steam Community surfaces guides described as Agony builds, synergy builds, and mechanics tips; use them as ideas to test against your own unlocks and objective, not as proof that a loadout is best.

Comparison axis Question to ask
Damage pattern and synergy Do the abilities and traits reinforce one another, or are they competing for the build’s limited choices?
Survival and recovery Can the setup withstand the chosen content, or does it depend on avoiding every threat?
Mobility and positioning Does the build require careful positioning or frequent movement to work?
Unlock dependence Does it require a specific item, trait, or upgrade you have not unlocked?
Objective fit Does it serve the actual completion condition rather than a different kind of run?
Difficulty ceiling Does the setup remain workable at the difficulty or Agony level you intend to play?

What to know about new Archives characters

Chasing Carrots announced two distinct character concepts for The Lost Archives: the Inquisitor builds Judgement stacks and uses execution strikes, while the Blood Apostle spends HP for destructive power through a Sacrifice system. The announcement also previewed new abilities, items, traits, blessings, and artifacts. These concepts should not be treated as established builds for the pre-DLC roster, and the announcement alone does not verify their final release balance. See Chasing Carrots’ Steam announcements for the dated information.
