Hackers copied 130 code repositories from a Dropbox GitHub organization after phishing employees with a fake CircleCI sign-in page, Dropbox disclosed on November 1, 2022. The company said the repositories contained developer API keys and a few thousand names and email addresses, but not customer Dropbox files, account passwords, or payment information.
What the hackers accessed—and what they did not
Dropbox said the attacker accessed one of its GitHub organizations and copied 130 code repositories. The repositories included Dropbox-modified copies of third-party libraries, internal prototypes, and tools and configuration files used by its security team. Dropbox said they did not contain code for its core apps or infrastructure, which the company described as more tightly restricted. Dropbox’s November 1, 2022 disclosure is the source for the incident scope and impact described here.
The company said the accessed code included credentials, primarily API keys used by Dropbox developers. It also said code and associated data contained a few thousand names and email addresses associated with employees, current and former customers, sales leads, and vendors. Dropbox cited more than 700 million registered users as context; that figure is not a count of people affected by the breach.
Dropbox said its investigation found no access to the contents of Dropbox accounts, account passwords, or payment information. These are findings reported by the company, not an independently published count of affected people. Dropbox did not publicly provide a detailed inventory of the repositories, the permissions or value of each exposed API key, or the number of employees who submitted credentials.

How the phishing attack worked
In early October 2022, multiple Dropbox employees received emails impersonating CircleCI, a service Dropbox used for some internal deployments. Dropbox said some messages were quarantined, while others reached employee inboxes. The emails directed recipients to a fake CircleCI sign-in page that asked for GitHub usernames and passwords as well as a one-time passcode generated using a hardware authentication key.
Dropbox said GitHub alerted the company on October 14, 2022, to suspicious activity that had begun the previous day. Its investigation found that an attacker impersonating CircleCI had accessed a Dropbox GitHub account; the phishing campaign ultimately enabled access to a Dropbox GitHub organization. BleepingComputer’s contemporaneous report also described the disclosure and sequence.

Why a one-time code did not stop this phishing flow
In Dropbox’s account, the fake page captured a one-time code along with the password. That illustrates a limitation of a code-based second factor in this particular attack: if a victim enters a code into a phishing page, an attacker may be able to relay it during sign-in. It does not mean every second-factor setup is equally vulnerable, and the public account does not establish how other products or configurations behave.
Dropbox said it was accelerating adoption of WebAuthn, a phishing-resistant authentication standard that can bind authentication to the legitimate site. The company wrote at the time, “Soon, our whole environment will be secured by WebAuthn with hardware tokens or biometric factors.” That was a future-tense plan in its 2022 disclosure, not evidence of the organization’s current deployment status.

How Dropbox responded
Dropbox said it disabled the attacker’s GitHub access on the day it received GitHub’s alert, coordinated the rotation of exposed developer credentials, reviewed logs, engaged external forensic experts, and notified appropriate regulators and law enforcement. It reported finding no evidence of successful abuse in its review.

What developers and organizations can take from the incident
- Treat service-provider sign-in links cautiously. The emails impersonated a service Dropbox used internally, and the counterfeit page asked for GitHub credentials. Verify a sign-in request through a trusted route rather than following an unexpected link.
- Use phishing-resistant authentication where supported. WebAuthn and FIDO2 security keys are relevant options, but compatibility and account settings matter. The incident disclosure does not recommend a particular manufacturer or model, or establish that any particular product would have prevented this breach.
- Limit and rotate developer credentials. Dropbox said the repositories held developer API keys and that it coordinated their rotation. Restricting credentials to necessary access and replacing exposed keys can reduce the risk if source code is copied.
- Separate code repositories by sensitivity. Dropbox said the compromised repositories did not include core application or infrastructure code, which it described as more tightly restricted. Access boundaries can limit what one compromised account exposes.
