Rockstar has not announced a process for transferring a GTA Online character or progress into GTA VI. You can prepare by securing the Rockstar account tied to your current character, keeping proof of account ownership, and understanding the limits of today’s GTA Online migrations. Those steps protect access and help you avoid mistaken assumptions; they do not guarantee that characters, money, cars, or other progress will carry into GTA VI.
Rockstar lists GTA VI for November 19, 2026, with pre-loading beginning November 12. As of October 30, 2026, the important distinction is that Rockstar’s documented migration rules cover certain moves between GTA V console generations—not a transfer into GTA VI.
What should you do before GTA 6 comes out?
Focus on account access, security, and documentation—not on buying something in the hope that it will unlock a transfer. Rockstar has not confirmed that GTA Online characters or assets will move into GTA VI, so no preparation step can promise that result. The aim is to make sure you can still access the account you already use, protect it from avoidable problems, and know which current migration rules apply to your platform.
- Identify the Rockstar account linked to your GTA Online platform account. Sign in to the account connected to the PlayStation Network or Xbox account you actually use to play. Check the account details before changing anything. A different email address that is easier to access does not mean it owns your character or purchase history. If you have more than one Rockstar account, do not assume the one you use for another game is the right one for GTA Online.
- Make sure you can access that account. If the email address is outdated, update it through the account’s official settings after confirming you are working with the correct account. Use a unique password, enable security options offered by Rockstar and your console-platform account, and keep recovery information somewhere safe. These are sensible account-hygiene steps, not stated requirements for a future GTA VI transfer.
- Keep basic ownership records. Save relevant platform purchase receipts, note the Rockstar account details you use, and keep screenshots showing your current character and major purchases. This documentation cannot make a profile eligible for a transfer Rockstar has not announced, but it may help if you later need to explain an account-access or support issue. Keep records private and do not post screenshots that expose email addresses, account IDs, or other personal information.
- Keep the profile in good standing. Avoid exploits, modified or otherwise illegitimate progress, account sharing, and activity that could lead to suspension. Rockstar says suspended, banned, or otherwise ineligible profiles may not qualify for the GTA Online migrations it currently supports. Staying within the rules is a practical way to avoid putting current account access at risk, not a promise about future GTA VI eligibility.
- Wait for Rockstar to publish a GTA VI policy. If Rockstar announces a transfer or linking process, read its eligibility rules, platform restrictions, and deadlines before acting. Until then, do not pay for a claimed transfer service or make a purchase solely on the assumption that your existing progress will carry over.
These measures are useful even if GTA Online progress never transfers: they help you retain control of the account and understand what you currently own. They are not a workaround for the absence of a confirmed GTA Online-to-GTA VI migration process. You do not need to rush through them because a transfer deadline has been announced; no such deadline is confirmed.

A simple account-and-records check
Before changing account details, verify which platform profile you use to launch GTA Online and which Rockstar account is linked to it. Then confirm that you can sign in to that Rockstar account and that you can access its recovery email. Keep purchase receipts in the relevant PlayStation or Xbox account history as well as any records you already have. Screenshots can help you remember your character and notable purchases, but they are not a substitute for Rockstar account access or proof that an asset will be transferred.
If something does not match—such as an unfamiliar email address or a character you do not see after signing in—avoid creating another account or unlinking anything in an attempt to fix it. First establish which account is associated with your existing play history. An unnecessary account change could make it harder to keep track of the account that has the relevant character and purchase records.
Will your GTA Online character transfer to GTA 6?
There is no confirmed transfer process in the Rockstar sources covered here. Rockstar has published instructions for moving certain GTA Online profiles between generations of GTA V, but those rules do not establish that a character, rank, or other progress will be available in GTA VI.
That means there is no confirmed answer for whether your character will appear in GTA VI, whether you will be able to create or link an account in a particular way, or whether Rockstar will offer a limited-time migration window. Until Rockstar announces a policy, treat all claims of a guaranteed character transfer as unconfirmed. A current Rockstar account link is useful for maintaining access to the account you use today; it is not a confirmed reservation or transfer mechanism for GTA VI.
What about money, cars, properties, and unlocks?
Rockstar has not confirmed that GTA Online cash, vehicles, properties, businesses, clothing, ranks, or unlocks will transfer into GTA VI. A purchase or account link today should not be treated as a promise that any of those assets will be available in the next game. The same uncertainty applies to crews and other social features: there is no confirmed statement here that GTA VI will share accounts, currencies, crews, or progression with GTA Online.
There is one narrower, current rule worth knowing: Rockstar says unspent purchased GTA$ are not eligible for transfer across platforms under its existing migration rules. That is a restriction on cross-platform GTA Online migration, not a published ruling on how GTA VI will handle money. Rockstar has not announced whether earned GTA$, purchased GTA$, or any other GTA Online currency will carry into GTA VI. Do not interpret a rule about moving between supported GTA V platforms as an answer about a different game.
What does Rockstar’s current GTA Online migration policy allow?
Rockstar’s documented migration is for certain GTA Online profiles moving from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. It is not a general account-transfer service, and it is not evidence of a future GTA VI transfer. The distinction is between a supported move across generations within the same console family and a move to another platform family or game.

| Move or issue | What Rockstar’s current policy says |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 | Eligible GTA Online profiles can migrate between these console generations. |
| Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S | Eligible GTA Online profiles can migrate between these console generations. |
| PlayStation 5 to Xbox Series X|S, or the reverse | Not supported. Rockstar says profiles cannot be migrated between these console families. |
| PlayStation or Xbox console family to PC | Not supported under Rockstar’s stated rules. |
| After a PS4 or Xbox One profile migrates to a current-generation console | The migrated profile remains on the old console, but progress made on different console generations will not sync. |
| Unspent purchased GTA$ moved across platforms | Not eligible for transfer across platforms under the current rules. |
Rockstar’s Customer Support article “Grand Theft Auto Online Character Transfers,” last updated January 29, 2025, states: “Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S or from PlayStation or Xbox console families to PC.” Its separate guide, “Migrating your GTA Online Profile from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S,” last updated February 24, 2026, says a profile remains on the older console after migration. It also says progress made on different console generations will not sync.
Same-platform upgrade is different from a cross-platform move
If you are moving from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, you are looking at the generation-to-generation migration Rockstar documents for eligible profiles. That does not mean a player can move the same profile between PlayStation and Xbox, or from a console family to PC. Rockstar explicitly rules out those cross-family moves in its current policy.
This distinction matters when choosing what to do with your current setup. If your goal is to continue GTA Online on a newer console in the same family, check the applicable Rockstar migration guide for the latest instructions. If your goal is to move to a different console family, the current rules do not support that move. Neither choice answers whether a profile will transfer into GTA VI, which remains unannounced.
Migration is not a continuing sync or a backup
Moving a profile from PS4 or Xbox One to a newer console does not mean progress on both generations will stay identical. Rockstar’s guide says that once a profile has been migrated, later progress made on different console generations will not sync. If you are considering a supported console-generation migration, read the current Rockstar instructions first and decide which platform you intend to play on; do not assume you can keep two versions of the character progressing together.

Rockstar’s guide describes the migrated profile as retained on the old platform while noting that progress across different console generations will not sync. If you switch back and forth, the result may not reflect the latest progress on the other generation. Make your platform decision with that limitation in mind, and consult Rockstar’s live support instructions before taking action.
Eligibility matters
Even a move between supported console generations may not be available to every profile. Rockstar says profiles can be ineligible because they are suspended or banned, or because progress is illegitimate or insufficient. Keeping your account in good standing is a practical precaution, but it cannot guarantee eligibility for a future process whose rules have not been announced.
These limitations are reasons to avoid buying a console or changing platforms based on a vague promise from another player or seller. The current migration rules describe specific supported moves; they do not offer a universal way to merge profiles, move every balance, or switch from one platform family to another. If your situation does not fit the documented PS4-to-PS5 or Xbox One-to-Xbox Series X|S path, do not assume a workaround exists.

Should you buy GTA VI, GTA+, or a new console to protect your progress?
No. Buying GTA VI, a subscription, in-game currency, a console, or an account-transfer service does not establish that GTA Online progress will transfer. Buy GTA VI if you want to play GTA VI; do not treat the purchase as a way to reserve or move your existing character. The same applies to GTA+ or Shark Cards: the materials covered here do not say that either changes transfer eligibility.

Rockstar lists GTA VI for November 19, 2026, and says pre-loading begins November 12, 2026. Those are release and pre-load dates, not transfer deadlines. Rockstar’s store also describes the physical product as a download-code box with no disc. Check the live official store listing for current edition and availability details before buying, since those details can change. If you prefer a physical package, understand that the listed box does not contain a game disc; it contains a download code.
Be especially wary of anyone asking for your Rockstar credentials or payment in exchange for a promised character migration. Rockstar has not documented a GTA Online-to-GTA VI transfer service in the sources cited here, so a third party cannot substantiate a guarantee on Rockstar’s behalf. Do not give another person your login or recovery codes. A product listing, subscription, or paid service should not be confused with an official Rockstar policy.
Spend only for a reason you can verify
If you are considering a new console, decide based on the games and platform you want to play, not on a promised GTA Online profile move. The documented same-family generation migrations may be relevant to continuing GTA Online on newer hardware, but a console purchase does not create support for a PlayStation-to-Xbox move or a GTA VI transfer. Likewise, purchasing GTA VI gets you the game, not a confirmed entitlement to carry over GTA Online progress.
For a purchase, verify the platform, edition, seller, price, and release status on the live store page. Rockstar lists the November 19 release and November 12 pre-load dates, but those dates do not imply a migration window. The physical code-in-box detail is also a format fact, not a sign that a disc or transfer entitlement is included.
Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 launches?
There is no reason to panic-sell or abandon your current account because of GTA VI’s launch. A September 17, 2026, TechRadar report says Take-Two indicated that GTA Online support will continue after GTA VI launches and beyond.
That statement is not a permanent end-of-service guarantee. No long-term shutdown date is established here, and continued GTA Online support does not mean characters or assets will transfer into GTA VI. Keep those questions separate: support for the existing game can continue even if the next game uses separate accounts or progression. You can keep playing and maintaining your current profile without treating the launch as an announced shutdown date.

What is confirmed, and what remains unknown?
The safest way to plan is to separate Rockstar’s current, documented GTA Online rules from unanswered questions about GTA VI. The existing migration guidance is useful if you are changing GTA V console generations. It does not settle the next game’s account system, online mode, currencies, character imports, or long-term plans for GTA Online.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my GTA Online character transfer to GTA 6?
Rockstar has not announced a GTA Online-to-GTA VI character or progress-transfer process. Current Rockstar migration guidance covers eligible moves from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, not a transfer into GTA VI.
Can I keep my GTA Online money and cars in GTA 6?
There is no confirmed answer. Rockstar has not said that GTA Online cash, vehicles, properties, businesses, clothing, ranks, or unlocks will transfer. Its current rule excluding unspent purchased GTA$ applies to cross-platform GTA Online migration, not a published GTA VI policy.
Do I need to link my Rockstar account before GTA 6?
No GTA VI linking requirement or transfer process has been announced. It is still sensible to confirm you can access the Rockstar account linked to your current PlayStation Network or Xbox account, but that account access does not guarantee or reserve a GTA VI transfer.
Can I move GTA Online from Xbox to PlayStation?
Rockstar’s current rules do not support migration between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, or from console families to PC. The documented generation moves are PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S for eligible profiles.
