If you get wanted during a Grand Theft Auto VI gunfight, stop shooting, break the police line of sight, read the red information icons under the stars, and change the clues officers can use before leaving the hot district. Swapping cars, changing clothes out of view, splitting Jason and Lucia, and avoiding a return to the crime area are more important than simply driving faster. Rockstar has shown a six-star, information-driven system rather than GTA V’s simple chase bubble. The game remains unreleased as of 30 October 2026; Rockstar lists launch for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What should you do first when a GTA 6 gunfight makes you wanted?
The safest response is to stop escalating, break sight, then remove the clues the dispatch system has about you. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North demonstrated that aiming at aggressors without firing could defuse a confrontation: the targets ran, a report was made, but the wanted state stayed low because there was no violent shooting. Firing is what turns a manageable report into a rapidly escalating pursuit.
- Stop firing if an exit is still possible. Holster or lower the weapon and move rather than trading more shots. Nelson told IGN and GameSpot that the design encourages committing a crime, leaving, and avoiding escalation.
- Break line of sight. Use corners, cover, alleys, fences, buildings, or a crouched route. Solid white stars mean officers can still see and pursue you; do not change clothes or cars in that view.
- Read the red icons below the stars. They show what the police know, such as your appearance, clothes, vehicle, camera footage, weapon, or that Jason and Lucia are together.
- Change the highest-value clue out of sight. Leave a known car after sight is broken, use a spare outfit in a personal vehicle’s trunk or a clothing store, and split the protagonists if the pair clue is active.
- Leave the hot area. Losing the immediate pursuit does not mean the district has forgotten. Wait elsewhere before approaching the crime scene again.
None of these actions is a documented instant star reset. They reduce the information available to the search while you avoid creating a new report.

How does a gunfight become a wanted level?
GTA 6’s system requires a witness or an alarm before police receive a report. Nelson told IGN that dispatch is specific about what it knows, rather than automatically identifying every crime. A person walking with a weapon on their back is not automatically reported in the preview footage; aiming at people can make them flee or call police, while firing creates a far more serious incident.

The distinction matters during a street confrontation. If an NPC sees the shooting, dispatch may receive a physical description, clothing, weapon, vehicle, partner information, or camera evidence. If an alarm is triggered, the report can arrive without a conventional eyewitness. Shooting again after the first report gives officers more opportunities to see you, identify the vehicle, or add witnesses.
GameSpot quoted Nelson on the intended rhythm as “hit-and-run” gameplay. He also cautioned that avoiding escalation is an option, not a guarantee: some encounters can still become dangerous. Treat the first seconds as an information-management problem, not a contest to eliminate every pursuer.
What do the six GTA 6 wanted-star states mean?
Six stars return to the HUD; GTA V used five, and IGN notes that the series last displayed six in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars in 2009. Preview footage and outlet explanations establish four visual states, but Rockstar has not published a complete six-star deployment table.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| HUD state | What the previews indicate | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Hollow or empty stars | Police are responding to a crime or alarm but do not have a usable suspect description. IGN showed this state while Lucia passed officers, who did not act on her. | Do not volunteer a description. Stay out of sight, avoid aiming at people, and leave before a witness or camera identifies you. |
| Solid white stars | Police have a direct line of sight and are actively pursuing you. | Break sight immediately. Do not swap vehicles or outfits where an officer can watch. |
| Flashing white stars | You have broken direct sight, but the chase remains active and officers are beginning to lose you. | Keep moving through cover and prepare a clue change; do not assume the search has ended. |
| Red stars | You are outside immediate visual pursuit but still inside a search or heat area where a description can be used. | Leave the district and avoid returning while the area remains hot. |
Descriptions of flashing stars differ slightly between outlets. IGN, GameSpot, and GTAbase tie them to broken line of sight, while a Beebom explanation uses looser language about police not knowing exactly how you look. The line-of-sight interpretation is the safer one for play. Rockstar has not published the exact crime, kill, unit, or time threshold for each star, and six stars do not officially mean tanks, jets, or soldiers.
What do the red heat icons tell police?
The icons under the stars represent information that can keep a search focused. IGN confirmed the person, clothing, and CCTV icons in the extended demo; Nelson also pointed out vehicle and couple information. A weapon icon is widely reported in secondary coverage of the same footage but is less tightly documented than those three confirmed examples.

| Clue | What it means | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|
| Person silhouette | Dispatch has a physical description of the suspect. | Wear a mask before a crime when possible; after sight is broken, add a hat, glasses, or bandana and change hairstyle. These alter appearance but do not replace a full outfit change. |
| Clothes hanger | Police know the clothing you are wearing. | Change the complete outfit at a clothing store or through spare clothes in the personal vehicle trunk. Hair, glasses, or a hat alone leave the clothing clue active. |
| Vehicle | Officers know the car or motorcycle associated with the report. | After breaking sight, abandon it, switch vehicles, or destroy it away from observers. Changing cars does not itself erase the wanted state. |
| Camera | CCTV captured you. | Preview coverage says you may need to locate and deal with the recording equipment or files. Avoid cameras before a report whenever you can; no universal wipe procedure has been published. |
| Weapon | Police may be searching for the gun used in the report. | Ditch, switch, or stash the reported weapon in the trunk when you are out of view. The icon’s exact persistence rules are not published. |
| Couple or two people | Dispatch knows Jason and Lucia are operating together. | Split their routes after sight is broken. Nelson says separation lowers police perception of you; a precise star reduction is not an official Rockstar rule. |
Nelson summarized the choices to IGN: wait for the search to die down, change outfits, or split Jason and Lucia. The icons tell you which of those choices is useful now. If the vehicle icon is active during a moving chase, leaving the car has priority. If you are on foot with the clothing and couple icons, cover, an outfit change, and separation matter more.
How do you escape a GTA 6 police chase step by step?
Use this sequence when you have a route away from the gunfight. It is a conditional playbook, not a guaranteed number of seconds to clear the stars.

- Identify the trigger. Ask whether a person witnessed the shooting, an alarm reported it, or CCTV may have recorded you. The answer determines which clues can appear.
- End the gunfight. Stop firing as soon as you have a viable escape. Additional shots can add witnesses, crimes, and a clearer description.
- Break sight before making changes. Solid white stars are your warning that officers can still see you. Crouch, turn a corner, pass behind a structure, or use an alley.
- Check the red icons. Choose the clue that most exposes you in the current situation. Vehicle information is especially important during a rolling pursuit.
- Abandon or change the identified vehicle. Do this only after sight is broken. Move away from the swap location so the old and new vehicles are not sitting together for a patrol to observe.
- Change the full outfit out of view. A personal vehicle carries spare outfits in its trunk. A hat or glasses can make the face description stale, but Nelson explicitly said police still know the clothing until you change it.
- Separate Jason and Lucia when the pair clue is active. Send them along different routes rather than keeping both in the same car or firefight. Separation lowers the police’s perception of the pair, but it is not a guaranteed escape.
- Leave the hot district. Use the map to identify the area where officers are still searching. Nelson showed that returning to the marked area can restore a star even after the immediate chase has faded.
- Use Focus Mode at corners. GameSpot and other previews report that police do not appear on the minimap as they did in GTA V. Focus Mode can reveal officers through walls so you do not step back into their sight line.
- Wait away from the crime scene. Do not treat one patrol driving past as proof that every clue has expired. Rockstar has not published a universal decay timer.
Should you keep shooting or run?
Run whenever the encounter can still be escaped. Shooting may solve the immediate attacker problem, but each shot increases the chance that dispatch receives a violent description and that more officers see you. Nelson’s demonstrations show that aiming without firing can make aggressors flee while keeping the wanted state low.
| Choice | Short-term benefit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Keep firing | Removes nearby threats quickly. | Rapid escalation, more witnesses, stronger descriptions, and a larger search. |
| Stop and leave | Preserves a low-information report and supports hit-and-run play. | You may still be pursued, and some encounters cannot be disengaged safely. |
| Stay in the known car | Maximum immediate speed and protection. | The vehicle clue keeps patrols focused on you. |
| Change cars after sight is broken | Removes a highly visible identifier. | The wanted state remains; swapping in view can preserve the report. |
| Stay together | Shared firepower and simpler navigation. | The couple description remains active and both can be caught together. |
| Split Jason and Lucia | Breaks the pair description and lowers police perception. | Routes become harder to coordinate, and either protagonist can still be arrested. |
Do changing clothes, hair, or a mask really lose the cops?
They can remove particular clues, but none is a complete disguise reset. IGN watched Jason buy a baseball cap; it cleared the description icon while leaving the clothing icon. Nelson said changing hair changes appearance but leaves police knowing what you are wearing, making it a poor choice while standing in the open.
Use a mask before committing a crime when possible. Masks are expected to limit what witnesses can report in a way similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, but Rockstar has not documented masks as erasing clothing, vehicle, CCTV, weapon, or partner information after a report. After sight is broken, change the complete outfit in a store or from the personal vehicle trunk. Changing while an observer is watching may not count, according to preview coverage.

Why is leaving the car not enough?
GTA 6 separates the vehicle clue from the wanted state. Jumping out of the identified car can make the vehicle icon disappear only after police lose sight; it does not automatically clear the stars. In the extended footage, Lucia took a used heist car to a quiet location and burned it with a Molotov, and the vehicle icon disappeared. That is a clue-removal example, not a guaranteed recipe for instant escape.
At night, spike strips can be almost invisible at high speed. Edge issue 430, on sale 29 October 2026, described a preview in which Nelson stole a motorcycle, hit spike strips, and had to continue on foot. Slow down when an escape route narrows, change vehicles before a roadblock, or leave the road rather than trying to thread a stinger you cannot see.
How do K9 units change an on-foot escape?
Do not assume that wrecking a car and sprinting away is the easy solution it was in older games. In the Edge preview sequence, a German Shepherd or Alsatian caught Jason after the motorcycle was disabled and pinned him to the ground. Developers urged Nelson not to shoot it; the report confirms that shooting the dog damages the Criminal Profile.
That footage does not establish a star threshold for K9 deployment, a scent-trail mechanic, or whether changing clothes in a trunk defeats a dog. Some outlets inferred scent systems, but the shown event only proves that a K9 can catch and pin a fleeing protagonist. If a dog reaches you, letting it go avoids the confirmed Criminal Profile penalty. Whether shooting also adds stars immediately has not been published.
Spike strips and K9s make the road-to-foot transition a decision point: use cover and Focus Mode, avoid obvious patrol paths, and do not treat the first successful line-of-sight break as the end of the pursuit.

What is regional heat, and when is it safe to return?
Heat belongs to a district, not only to a player-shaped bubble that vanishes after hiding for a few seconds. Nelson showed a map area marked as hot and explained that police would remain there for a while; hovering over the area still showed a star. Returning too soon can restore pressure because officers still have the description and are searching locally.
At the highest wanted states, several guides interpret the search as potentially spreading across much of the map, but Rockstar has not published the radius, shape, or decay timer. Do not rely on a fixed route, a claimed 30-second reset, or a specific number of blocks. Leave the marked area, wait without creating a new report, and check the map before approaching the original scene.
What does Criminal Profile have to do with a wanted chase?
Wanted stars describe the current dispatch event; Criminal Profile is a longer-term record of how violent you are and how you treat your partner. Nelson told The New York Times that giving actions meaning in those areas is new for GTA. Defending yourself is not presented as equivalent to repeatedly escalating without reason, while shooting a police dog is a confirmed Criminal Profile penalty from the Edge coverage.
Preview attendees have circulated labels such as Professional, Aggressive, Violent, and Psycho, but those names and a shattering profile icon are not official Rockstar documentation. Use the confirmed distinction: you can escape the current stars while still making Jason and Lucia’s longer-term profile worse through unnecessary violence.

When does GTA 6 release, and what do you need to use these tactics?
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The police and heat mechanics described here come from pre-release demonstrations; there is no released PC version in the stated launch information. You need the game on one of those launch platforms to apply the playbook.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will every GTA 6 mission use the same police rules?
Rockstar has not confirmed that missions share identical witness, alarm, CCTV, or heat behavior. Treat previews as evidence of the general system, while allowing for scripted missions that may restrict escape options or trigger reports differently.
Can a police dog track Jason by smell in GTA 6?
A preview shows a K9 catching and pinning Jason after a motorcycle crash, but it does not document a scent-trail minigame. Claims about smell tracking and whether an outfit swap defeats it remain unconfirmed.
What happens if Jason escapes but Lucia is arrested?
Preview coverage reports that an arrest of one protagonist still produces the Busted screen even if the other has escaped. Splitting up can reduce the pair clue, but it does not make either character immune to arrest.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC at launch?
The launch platforms listed by Rockstar are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC edition has not been confirmed in the launch information, so PC players should not assume these mechanics are currently available there.
