As of October 30, 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar and Take-Two have announced a single-player release, not a cross-play feature. A PC edition and date remain unannounced. Sony explicitly says the game will not be playable on PS4, while Xbox lists Series X|S and no Xbox One edition. If you buy the physical Standard Edition, the box contains a digital download code rather than a disc.
That makes the practical choice straightforward: you need a current-generation console at launch, and you should not buy hardware or a copy based on an assumed PC, multiplayer, cross-play or older-console release.

Which platforms are officially announced for GTA 6?
The announced launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No other platform appears on Rockstar’s current game page or the current preorder support information.

PlayStation 5
The PS5 edition is an announced launch platform. Sony’s official GTA VI FAQ describes the game as “a single-player experience” and states that it will not be playable on PS4. A PS5 owner therefore has the supported PlayStation hardware for the announced release.
Xbox Series X and Series S
Microsoft’s GTA VI listing names Xbox Series X|S. The notation includes both Series X and the lower-cost Series S; neither requires an Xbox One version to be announced separately.
What is not on the current platform list?
There is no announced PC edition, PC release window, PS4 version or Xbox One version. The absence of a listing is not proof that Rockstar will never make another version, but it is enough to guide a launch purchase: only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are confirmed.

No cross-play feature has been announced for launch. Cross-play normally lets players on different systems share an online multiplayer session, but the announced release is single player, so there is no confirmed launch multiplayer mode for which a PS5-to-Xbox cross-play matrix could exist.
Take-Two’s announcement describes the release as single player, and Sony uses the same description in its official FAQ. Those statements establish what is announced now; they do not rule out Rockstar announcing an online component or other multiplayer features later. Do not treat online rumors, a future mode or cross-progression as confirmed until Rockstar publishes those details.

Cross-play is different from cross-progression
Cross-play concerns who can play together across platforms. Cross-progression concerns whether saves, characters or other progress move between platforms. Rockstar’s current official pages provide neither a cross-play policy nor a cross-progression policy for GTA VI, so a buyer should assume neither is available at launch unless an updated announcement says otherwise.
Will GTA 6 be on PC?
A PC version is unannounced. Rockstar’s current preorder support page lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions but no PC edition and no PC date. That means “not announced,” not “impossible”: Rockstar could publish a PC plan later, but there is no official launch commitment to rely on today.

Avoid choosing a graphics card, processor or upgrade schedule from leaks or from release patterns of older games. What should PC players do now?
- Do not preorder a console edition expecting a PC entitlement; no cross-buy or PC entitlement has been announced.
- Do not treat an unofficial release date as a schedule.
- Check Rockstar’s platform and editions support page for an official PC listing before buying hardware for this game.
Can you play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?
PS4 is explicitly excluded, and Xbox One has no announced version. Sony’s GTA VI page says the game will not be playable on PS4. Microsoft’s listing names Xbox Series X|S and does not list Xbox One.
PS4 owners
There is no PS4 edition to buy or upgrade to in the announced lineup. A PS4 cannot be treated as a lower-spec launch alternative, and a PS4 copy is not part of the current release plan.

Xbox One owners
Xbox One support is not announced. Because the Xbox listing is specifically for Series X|S, an Xbox One owner should not assume backward compatibility, a native port or a cloud version without a separate official announcement.
Does owning an older console qualify for a free upgrade?
No older-console upgrade path is announced. The supported launch hardware is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S; any later edition, streaming option or upgrade policy would need its own Rockstar or platform announcement.
Which current console should you choose?
If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, using that console is the least uncertain option because both are officially supported. The game is announced for both console families on the same scheduled date, but the published information does not identify platform-specific performance modes or feature differences.
Choose PS5 if
- You already have a PS5 and want to stay within your existing PlayStation account and library.
- You prefer the PlayStation storefront and accessories you already use.
- You are replacing a PS4 and understand that the new game requires PS5 hardware.
Choose Xbox Series X|S if
- You already own either Series X or Series S.
- You want the Xbox version and are comfortable with the Series-generation requirement.
- You are moving from Xbox One and understand that Xbox One support is not announced.
Do not choose between PS5 and Xbox on the assumption that cross-play will let owners of different consoles play together. No such feature is announced, and the launch release is described as single player.
What are the GTA 6 editions and prices?
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 US announcement lists $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate. These are announced US prices, not a guarantee for every country, retailer, tax treatment or future price change. Rockstar’s support information lists digital Standard and Ultimate editions, a physical Standard code-in-box edition and a separately purchasable digital Ultimate upgrade.

| Digital Ultimate upgrade | Separate price not stated in the cited support information | Standard owners can buy a digital upgrade | Digital upgrade; no physical Ultimate Edition |
Rockstar’s editions guidance is the authority for the code-in-box terms and the upgrade option. The price table was checked in October 2026.
Does the physical GTA 6 box contain a disc?
No. The physical Standard Edition box contains a digital download code, not a disc. Rockstar’s support article states, “A disc will not be included in the box.” The box is therefore packaging for a platform download entitlement rather than a disc you can insert into a console.
Rockstar expects the physical box to be available from November 12, allowing buyers to obtain the code in time to preload before the scheduled November 19 launch. Preloading does not change the need to redeem the code through the correct platform account.
How to buy the physical Standard Edition safely
- Confirm your console. Buy the PS5 box for a PlayStation 5 account or the Xbox Series X|S box for an Xbox account. Neither is an announced PS4 or Xbox One product.
- Check the listing wording. Make sure it identifies the Standard Edition and says it includes a digital download code. Do not assume a “physical” label means a disc.
- Match the retailer region to your account. Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the country of your platform account. A code sold for another region may not redeem on your account.
- Plan for a download. The code provides the game entitlement, so you need internet access to redeem and download the game. The official material does not publish a final download size or installation-time estimate.
- Redeem when the code is available. Follow the redemption instructions for your console’s store, then keep the game installed for launch. The expected November 12 box timing is intended to permit preload.
What is still unknown about GTA 6?
Several questions remain open because the current official pages do not answer them:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A PC edition, PC release date and PC system requirements.
- A later online mode, multiplayer plan or cross-play support.
- Cross-progression between PlayStation and Xbox accounts.
- A native Xbox One edition or any PS4 support beyond Sony’s explicit exclusion.
- Availability through a particular streaming service.
- A platform-by-platform cross-play or cross-save matrix.
These are unanswered, not secretly confirmed. Recheck Rockstar’s game page, its editions support article and the official PlayStation and Xbox listings near launch because dates, platform lists and edition terms can change.

Should you buy a console for GTA 6 now?
Buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S now only if you also want that console for other games and services; GTA VI alone does not justify assuming a PC or older-console version will appear. A current PS5 or Series owner can plan around the announced November 19, 2026 date. A PS4, Xbox One or PC owner should wait for an official change rather than paying for an unconfirmed route.
The cleanest decision rule is: use the supported console you already own, select the same platform for a digital or code-in-box purchase, and treat every PC, online, cross-play, cross-progression or streaming claim as provisional until Rockstar publishes it.
How we picked the support status
The comparison uses only announced platform support, whether the reader owns supported hardware, physical-code versus digital purchasing terms, account-region compatibility and the distinction between “not announced” and “ruled out.” Platform and edition claims come from Rockstar, Take-Two, PlayStation and Xbox pages linked above; no unofficial release forecast is treated as a fact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launch on the same day?
Rockstar currently gives one scheduled date, November 19, 2026, for the announced release. Its published information does not describe a staggered launch or separate platform timing, so there is no confirmed platform-specific delay to report.
Can one digital purchase cover both the PS5 and Xbox versions?
No cross-platform purchase entitlement has been announced. Treat the PlayStation and Xbox editions as separate purchases unless Rockstar publishes a cross-buy policy.
Is there a confirmed Xbox One cloud version of GTA VI?
No. The current Xbox listing names Series X|S and the official material cited here does not announce an Xbox One cloud or streaming edition. Do not buy an Xbox One expecting access through an unannounced service.
Where should I check for a last-minute platform change?
Use Rockstar’s GTA VI page and its platform-and-editions support article first, then compare the current PlayStation and Xbox product pages. Those official pages are the places to verify a changed date, newly announced PC edition, multiplayer details or revised physical-box terms.
