Claude is the strongest first choice when you want to map a long manuscript in one working context and can provide it as EPUB, PDF, DOCX, or another supported format. ChatGPT is a capable alternative for a staged, chapter-by-chapter process, while Grok 4.7 offers a large 500K-token context and configurable reasoning but has less explicit documentation for ebook formats. None of those context limits guarantees a faithful adaptation: plan on a continuity guide, bounded drafting passes, and human editorial review.
Which tool should you choose?
For adapting a novel, memoir, or other long book, the practical choice depends on how you will feed in the manuscript and how you will control the transformation—not just which service advertises the biggest number.
- Choose Claude first if the source is an EPUB or a text-based PDF or DOCX, and you want to analyze a large portion of the book in a single working context. Anthropic documents context windows of up to 1 million tokens for many current Claude models and explicitly lists EPUB support.
- Choose ChatGPT for a structured, staged workflow if you want to organize chapter files and iterate through outlines, tables, and revisions in Projects. OpenAI documents text/document uploads up to 2 million tokens per file, but that upload ceiling is not the same as the model’s conversation context.
- Consider Grok 4.7 for large-context exploration, alternate adaptation pitches, or an API workflow. xAI documents a 500K-token context and configurable reasoning; its reviewed product documentation does not provide an equally explicit ebook-format support matrix.
These recommendations are based on published product capabilities, not a controlled test in which the same book was adapted by all three services. Their results can differ with the manuscript, instructions, model, interface, plan, and output format. Treat the comparison as a workflow guide, not a verdict on which model writes the best screenplay or series.
Context windows and file limits are different things
A file-upload limit describes what a service lets you attach. A model context window describes how much material the model can account for in a request or conversation. A large upload allowance does not mean the full document will be active in every later exchange, and neither number measures whether the model will accurately recall a small but important detail.

These are token figures, not word counts. A token is a unit of text processing, and the available data does not establish a reliable token-to-word conversion for a particular book. Claude’s context documentation also says a request’s context includes messages, documents, tools, and generated output. The available space is therefore shared across the material and response, rather than reserved entirely for the manuscript.
ChatGPT’s model context figures are specifically listed as total-context tiers: GPT Instant has 27K for Free, 54K for Go and Plus, and 128K for Pro; GPT Reasoning has 256K for Go and Plus and 400K for Pro. These figures make the distinction especially important: OpenAI’s 2-million-token per-file upload limit is not a promise that a single conversation can reason over two million tokens at once.
Claude’s higher ceiling also should not be treated as a guarantee of perfect recall. Anthropic warns that accuracy and recall can decline as context grows, a problem it calls “context rot,” and says that more context is not automatically better. For adaptation work, a smaller, well-organized source set may be more useful than repeatedly placing every chapter, note, and draft in the same prompt.

How each service fits a book-adaptation workflow
Claude: manuscript mapping and source-grounded passes
Claude is the clearest fit when file format and broad source coverage are priorities. Its documented uploads include EPUB, PDF, and DOCX, and its help documentation lists a 30MB limit per file and up to 20 files in one chat. Anthropic says project knowledge bases can contain unlimited files subject to the context window, so “unlimited files” does not mean unlimited active context.
For a text-based manuscript, a useful sequence is to ask Claude to extract a continuity bible, then create an adaptation map, and only then draft selected scenes or chapters. Ask it to identify the source chapter for each major plot beat and flag uncertain or conflicting details instead of silently resolving them. Even with a large context window, check the result against the book.
PDF handling requires a format check. Anthropic says PDFs over 100 pages are text-only outside the multimodal cases it lists. If a book is a scan or relies on illustrations, layout, or other page imagery, do not assume the text will be interpreted as intended. A clean text-based EPUB or DOCX may be a better input when available.

ChatGPT: organize the work into stages
OpenAI documents DOCX, PDF, and TXT among its supported document and text formats, with a 2-million-token cap per text/document file. Projects provide a way to keep related material together, with file counts depending on the plan. For long adaptations, use those organizational controls to separate source chapters, reference notes, the adaptation outline, and current drafts rather than treating the upload cap as a reason to request a whole-book rewrite.
The published context tiers are smaller than Claude’s top documented offering, so ChatGPT is best approached as a sequence of focused tasks: summarize a bounded group of chapters, add verified findings to a continuity bible, make structural decisions against that guide, and draft one unit at a time. OpenAI describes file-assisted work such as summarizing, comparing, and transforming attached material; those are useful operations, but the author still needs to direct and verify the transformation.
Grok: large-context exploration, with an extra format check
xAI lists Grok 4.7 as its flagship model with a 500K-token context and configurable reasoning. Its documentation also describes Files & Collections, Chat with Files, and Collections Search, which can support file-based or retrieval-oriented work. However, the reviewed documentation does not enumerate ebook formats as explicitly as Claude’s upload page does. Check that the specific Grok interface you plan to use accepts your EPUB, PDF, or DOCX before building the workflow around it.

Grok can be useful for brainstorming alternate premises, comparing possible structures, or making exploratory passes over large text. If you use Collections Search or another retrieval feature, verify that important claims are backed by the right passage: retrieval can help locate material, but a returned excerpt is not proof that the model has understood the whole book’s chronology or character arc.
A safer step-by-step process for adapting a long book
Whichever assistant you choose, separate analysis from adaptation. A request to “turn this whole book into a screenplay” combines source comprehension, selection, restructuring, dialogue writing, and continuity checking in one opaque operation. Breaking those jobs apart makes it easier to see what changed and to correct a mistake before it propagates.

- Prepare the manuscript. Export a clean EPUB, DOCX, or text file where possible. Preserve chapter headings, scene breaks, and page references so you can locate source material later. For a scanned or image-heavy PDF, check what the chosen service can actually read before proceeding.
- Build a continuity bible before asking for adaptation. Request a structured inventory of characters, relationships, chronology, settings, unresolved threads, recurring motifs, and source locations. Ask the model to distinguish explicit facts from inference and to flag contradictions or uncertain dates rather than filling gaps with invention.
- Review the bible against the book. Correct errors and omissions yourself. The bible is a working reference, not an authoritative replacement for the source. Keep the approved version in the project or conversation materials you use for the next stage.
- Make an adaptation map. Decide what should be retained, merged, reordered, externalized, or cut before drafting. For each major change, ask for the reason and the source chapters affected. This gives you a visible record of what the adaptation is doing to the original structure.
- Draft in bounded units. Work by chapter, sequence, or episode rather than asking for a complete book-length output in one pass. Give each request the relevant source excerpts, the approved continuity facts, the intended format, and the unit’s place in the overall outline. Require references back to source chapters for significant plot or character choices.
- Run separate revision passes. Check continuity, voice, pacing, factual claims, and permissions as distinct tasks. A draft that reads smoothly can still change chronology, flatten a character, omit a crucial setup, or introduce material that was not in the source.
- Keep a human editorial checkpoint between major transformations. Compare the map with the source, review the draft against the map, and make the final selection and revision decisions yourself. The published capabilities described here do not establish that any assistant can replace that review.
A practical instruction for the continuity-bible stage might be: “Use only the attached chapters. List each major character, their relationships, first appearance, important choices, and unresolved threads. Cite the chapter heading or page reference for each item. Mark uncertain details as uncertain; do not invent connective facts.” For an adaptation map, ask for a table with the source beat, proposed treatment, reason, affected character or thread, and source location. The model can propose decisions, but you should approve them before it drafts scenes.

Privacy, unpublished work, and rights
Before uploading an unpublished manuscript, review the current terms and privacy controls for the exact plan and interface you will use. Consumer and API terms can differ, and a feature’s availability or data handling may change. Do not assume that a statement about one plan applies to another.
Anthropic’s pricing page, checked October 25, 2026, marks model training as opt-out on the listed plans. xAI’s privacy policy, updated October 11, 2026, says user content may be used to provide, analyze, and maintain its service, develop and improve it, and conduct research. That language makes a review of current consumer-versus-API terms particularly important before sharing a confidential manuscript. The cited material here does not establish ChatGPT’s corresponding terms, so check OpenAI’s current settings and policy directly rather than inferring them from another provider.
Separately, having a digital copy of a book does not by itself answer whether you have permission to create or distribute an adaptation. Rights depend on the work and intended use; confirm that you have the necessary rights or permission before publishing, distributing, or commercially using an adaptation. Keep quoted source passages limited to what the task requires and track any rights-sensitive quotations during review.

For API-based Grok 4.7 use, xAI’s pricing checked October 25, 2026 lists $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for short context, rising to $4 per million input and $12 per million output tokens for long context. These are API rates, not consumer subscription prices. A long manuscript prompt and repeated revision requests can involve substantial input and output, so estimate usage for the actual workflow rather than equating the context window with a flat fee.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by the biggest number alone. A context ceiling does not measure faithfulness, craft, or recall. Test a representative passage and verify its source references before committing a full project.
- Confusing upload capacity with working context. This is especially important for ChatGPT, whose documented 2-million-token file cap exceeds its listed model context tiers.
- Uploading a scan without checking extraction. A PDF can be present while its text or images are not being interpreted as you expect. Check the model’s account of a few known passages first.

- Letting the model silently resolve ambiguity. Require uncertainty labels and source locations for disputed chronology, motivation, and plot details.
- Assuming privacy terms are interchangeable. Review the current policy for the exact product, plan, and interface—especially for unpublished, client-owned, or confidential writing.

- Pick Claude when EPUB support and the option of a large working context are the priorities, while checking the specific model’s available context and the document’s size and format.
- Pick ChatGPT when you prefer a Project-based, iterative process and are comfortable organizing the book into chapters or other bounded source groups.
- Pick Grok when its 500K-token context, configurable reasoning, file tools, or API workflow suit your task—and after confirming the interface can ingest your manuscript format.
- Use any of them as an assistant, not an automatic adapter. Make a continuity bible and adaptation map, draft in sections, and review the result against the manuscript.
