It keeps the desk’s existing lifting frame and controller housing, while adding stored height positions and other controller features. It is worth considering if you own a compatible Bekant and want memory buttons; it is not a new desk or a lifting-frame upgrade.
What Megadesk changes
Greg Cormier’s project replaces the Bekant’s original controller board with an AVR-based board designed to fit the existing housing. The project describes memory-position saving and recall, recalibration, custom minimum and maximum height limits, serial control, optional audio feedback, and a dual-button memory mode. The project repository documents these features and their operation.
For everyday use, the creator’s product page describes pressing the up button repeatedly to recall a stored position, then holding the final press to save a position. Consult the project instructions for the supported button sequences and modes before using them; the exact behavior is described in the Megadesk product listing.
Who should consider it
- A good fit: Bekant owners who regularly switch between sitting and standing heights and would value saved positions enough to replace the stock controller.
- Less compelling: owners who are satisfied with the stock controls, do not want to replace a controller board, or expect a new lifting frame or a broader desk upgrade.
- For tinkerers: the project’s additional settings and serial control may be useful, but the repository is the authority for setup and commands.
The independent 2019 IKEA Hackers write-up also identifies Megadesk as Cormier’s open-source memory-controller upgrade for the Bekant.

What is included and what it costs
When checked on October 4, 2026, Cormier’s store listing described a fully assembled board and a plug-and-play cable, and displayed a price of $52. That is a dated listing observation, not a guaranteed current price or statement of stock. Check the store page for current price, availability, shipping, and included parts before ordering. The available information does not establish a current total installed cost.
Installation and recalibration cautions
Megadesk is a controller-board replacement, so installation means working with the existing desk controller housing rather than installing a new frame. The repository includes installation videos and project-specific instructions; follow those rather than assuming the procedure for another desk controller applies.

Recalibration deserves particular care. The project says the desk moves down to its lowest possible limit during recalibration, advises caution, and recommends being ready to disconnect power if necessary. Cormier also recommends keeping the original Bekant board, even though it is no longer needed to recalibrate with Megadesk. Read the current repository instructions before attempting recalibration.

The Companion repository contains wiring details, including a warning that the red-plus terminals on both sides represent the 24 V source. Because the connection differs by board version and involves electrical wiring, use its complete instructions instead of relying on a simplified wiring summary.
