Greenfoot is a free-to-download educational environment for learning object-oriented Java by building interactive games, simulations, and other graphical programs. You create actors, place them in a world, and write Java code that controls what they do. Because you can run the scenario and see the results, Greenfoot makes an approachable starting point for learning how Java classes and methods work—without replacing a structured Java course.
What Greenfoot is and how it teaches Java
Greenfoot combines a Java programming environment with a graphical world where program behavior can be seen and explored. Its core teaching idea is object orientation: actors are objects that live in worlds, and learners write standard Java code to define their behavior. Greenfoot summarizes its approach as “Greenfoot teaches object orientation with Java.” Greenfoot’s overview describes it as an environment for making games, simulations, and other graphical programs.
This is not a visual-only or block-based language. You work with Java classes and methods, while the interactive scene provides a concrete way to observe what the code does. Greenfoot is intended to help learners move on to other Java environments, including BlueJ and professional IDEs; that is a design goal, not a guarantee of a particular learning outcome.
How a Greenfoot project works
Actors and worlds
A scenario (Greenfoot’s term for a project) contains a world and the actors placed in it. An actor can represent a character, object, or other element in a game or simulation. You program its behavior in Java, then add instances of the actor to the world to see them interact.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Act, Run, and observing behavior
The introductory Wombats tutorial demonstrates the basic loop: place objects in the world, then execute their behavior. The Greenfoot documentation links to this and other beginner material.
- Act: Click Act to run an actor’s behavior once.
- Run: Click Run to repeat the programmed actions continuously.
- Adjust speed: Use the speed control to change how quickly the scenario runs.
These controls help connect a change in code to a visible result. You can pause or change the scenario and inspect what the actors do, making it easier to experiment than in a text-only program whose output is less visual.

Is the Greenfoot book necessary?
No. Greenfoot is described as free to download, and the book is a separate paid learning resource rather than a requirement for using the software. For a more structured, project-driven path, the official companion is Introduction to Programming with Greenfoot: Object-Oriented Programming in Java with Games and Simulations, second edition, by Michael Kölling. Pearson published it in 2016; its ISBN-13 is 978-013-405429-2. The book page describes an objects-first, hands-on approach built around games and simulations. See Greenfoot’s book information for edition details and retailer links; check the retailer for current availability.
The Greenfoot documentation says the second edition adds chapters and scenarios, practice sections, and a more gradual introduction. The book’s 2016 publication date distinguishes it from current software documentation. The companion book site also mentions classroom exercises, worksheets, and other materials; teachers can check those resources alongside the Greenroom community.

What to check before installing Greenfoot
Greenfoot’s installation guide includes legacy platform naming and Java 8/JDK-specific instructions, so do not assume those directions describe current requirements. The archived release page records Greenfoot 3.9.0, dated 29 October 2024; its notes say the release upgraded to Java 21 and added code completion for local variables. The page lists packages for Windows, macOS Intel and Apple Silicon, Debian-based x86_64 and ARM64 systems (including Raspberry Pi), and a generic executable JAR. These are details for that archived release, not proof that it remains the newest version or that those are the current system requirements.
Before downloading, check the current Greenfoot download page and its linked release information for the available version and platform-specific instructions. The archived release page is useful for identifying what was available in 3.9.0, but does not establish what is current in October 2026.

Who Greenfoot is suited to
Greenfoot is a good fit for learners who want to meet Java through visible, interactive projects rather than start with programs that only print text. Teachers can use the worlds and actors to demonstrate object-oriented ideas, while students can experiment with behavior and build games or simulations. It is less a complete Java curriculum than a teaching environment: learners may need lessons, a course, or the book to provide a fuller sequence of concepts and practice.
