“Green Lantern” is a mantle shared by multiple characters, not just one hero. In DC’s Corps-centered stories, Hal Jordan is the first human Green Lantern; in publication history, Alan Scott appeared first. These distinctions answer many common quiz questions.
Who is Green Lantern?
Green Lantern is a heroic identity used by different characters across DC stories and eras. In the later, science-fiction-oriented Green Lantern Corps framework, Hal Jordan is the best-known early human bearer of the mantle. Alan Scott is the original Green Lantern character in publication history, with a distinct origin and connection to the Green, an elemental force associated with living growth on Earth.
DC’s profiles treat Alan Scott and Hal Jordan as separate characters with different power-ring origins and cosmological contexts: Alan Scott and Hal Jordan.
Who was the first Green Lantern?
It depends on what “first” means. Alan Scott was the first Green Lantern character introduced in DC publication history. Hal Jordan was the first human Green Lantern in the Corps-era account. DC lists Hal’s first appearance as All-American Comics #16 (1940), but that does not make him the first character to use the Green Lantern identity.
How did Hal Jordan get his ring?
Hal Jordan was a test pilot who received a Green Lantern ring after the alien Green Lantern Abin Sur died. Abin Sur explained the Corps to him. Hal was selected from possible successors because he was closer to Abin Sur than Guy Gardner was, according to DC’s account of Guy’s origin.
Guy Gardner was not excluded from consideration: DC says he could have been chosen if he had been a few miles closer. Hal’s selection came down to proximity in that telling.
What is the Green Lantern Corps?
The Green Lantern Corps is an interstellar organization of ring-bearing Lanterns who protect the universe. Its members use emerald power rings, which must be charged before duty. DC’s official Green Lantern Corps profile describes an ancient oath that members speak aloud before charging their rings. The excerpted profile establishes that the oath exists but does not give its full text, so its exact wording and punctuation should not be assumed from that description alone.
DC identifies Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz among notable Earth members. Their shared mantle does not mean their origins or roles are identical.

What is different about Alan Scott’s Green Lantern?
Alan Scott’s identity predates the Corps-centered framing associated with Hal Jordan and John Stewart. DC describes Scott as an avatar of the Green, an elemental force governing living growth on Earth, with his power focused through a ring. The familiar Corps, oath, Sinestro, and space-faring stories arrived later in Green Lantern publication history; Scott was not selected through the same kind of power-ring origin associated with Hal and John.
For a quiz, keep the distinction clear: Alan Scott is first in publication history, while Hal Jordan is first among humans in DC’s Corps account.

What should I know about Jessica Cruz?
Jessica Cruz is a sworn protector of Sector 2814. Before becoming an official Green Lantern, she was chosen to wear the Ring of Volthoom. DC’s profile describes her experience with crippling anxiety and emphasizes overcoming fear; that is one part of her story, not her entire identity. Her role as a protector matters just as much in a character answer. Read DC’s Jessica Cruz profile.
How should I answer continuity-dependent quiz questions?
Green Lantern stories span different characters, eras, and continuities, so a question such as “Who was the original?” may mean the first published character or the first human in the Corps. Check the wording and identify the version being discussed—comics, a particular era, or an adaptation—before treating one answer as universal. DC’s character profiles and retrospective provide useful core distinctions, but they do not reconcile every alternate universe or adaptation.
