For raw, on-demand GPU rental, GPU-focused providers are usually cheaper than AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud in the latest published examples. RunPod lists an H100 SXM at $3.99 per GPU-hour and an H100 PCIe at $2.89, compared with a dated US Linux snapshot of $6.88 on AWS, $12.29 on Azure, and $11.06 on Google Cloud. CoreWeave lists an eight-GPU H100 system at $6.155 per GPU-hour on demand, or about $2.464 on spot capacity. Those are price-sheet comparisons, not proof that one provider completes your training or inference job for less. Accelerator model, memory, interconnect, interruptions, region, attached compute, storage, networking and your existing cloud commitments determine the real bill.

Which cloud is cheapest for AI GPUs?

GPU-focused clouds have the lowest sticker price in the cited 2026 H100, H200, B200 and A100 comparisons. RunPod is the lowest listed option for each of those cards in the CloudRift US Linux on-demand snapshot, while CoreWeave offers a large discount when spot capacity is acceptable. AWS, Azure and Google Cloud can still win on total cost when their identity, storage, networking, compliance and managed-data services eliminate engineering work or cross-region transfer.

The figures below compare GPU-hour rates only. A valid buying decision must compare the same accelerator variant, the same memory and interconnect, the same region and the complete machine bill.

See the complete methodology and regional context in CloudRift’s 2026 comparison. The snapshot is useful for screening providers, but it does not establish cost per training run, cost per token or throughput. A cheaper hour can lose if the GPU is slower for your kernel, has less memory, or spends time waiting for data.

Is RunPod cheaper than AWS for an H100?

On the cited list prices, yes. RunPod’s October 8, 2026 pricing page shows $3.99 per hour for an H100 SXM and $2.89 for an H100 PCIe; the CloudRift snapshot lists AWS at $6.88 per H100 GPU-hour. The comparison is only fair when you need the same H100 form factor, region and billing mode.

RunPod GPU Published price What the price represents
H200 $5.29/hour Pod dedicated-GPU rate
B200 $7.99/hour Pod dedicated-GPU rate
H100 SXM $3.99/hour Pod dedicated-GPU rate
H100 PCIe $2.89/hour Pod dedicated-GPU rate
A100 PCIe or SXM $1.79/hour Pod dedicated-GPU rate
L40S $1.09/hour Pod dedicated-GPU rate

RunPod says Pods are dedicated GPU instances, while Serverless is priced separately for inference and Clusters cover multi-node jobs. Check the current RunPod pricing page for the variant and availability you actually need; the listed rate is not a promise that every region has stock.

What would 100 H100 GPU-hours cost?

At the cited GPU-only rates, 100 hours would be $399 on RunPod H100 SXM, $289 on RunPod H100 PCIe and $688 on AWS. The equivalent snapshot is $1,229 on Azure and $1,106 on Google Cloud. These calculations omit host CPUs, memory, disks, network traffic, taxes, software and any discount or interruption.

How does CoreWeave compare with GPU-focused and hyperscale clouds?

CoreWeave publishes prices for complete eight-GPU HGX systems, so divide the instance rate by eight only when you will use all eight GPUs. Its current North America table also exposes spot pricing, which can materially change the economics.

Instance (8 GPUs) On demand/hour On-demand per GPU-hour Spot/hour Spot per GPU-hour
HGX H100 $49.24 $6.155 $19.71 $2.464
HGX H200 $50.44 $6.305 $20.93 $2.616
A100 $21.60 $2.70 $9.65 $1.206
L40S $18.00 $2.25 $7.88 $0.985

The H100 spot figure is about 60% below CoreWeave’s on-demand instance price. Spot capacity may be reclaimed, so the lower rate is appropriate only for jobs that checkpoint, restart and tolerate uncertain completion time. Prices and availability can vary by location; verify the current CoreWeave pricing table before committing.

Why are AWS, Azure and Google Cloud often more expensive per GPU-hour?

Hyperscalers bundle GPUs into broad infrastructure platforms. Their higher line item can buy mature virtual networking, identity and access controls, object storage, observability, quotas, private connectivity, regional redundancy and compliance tooling that a small GPU rental may not provide. If your data already lives in one of these clouds, avoiding a copy to another provider can outweigh a lower accelerator rate.

What Google Cloud’s GPU price leaves out

Google explicitly states that each GPU adds to the VM cost in addition to the machine type. Its published GPU page does not include disk, images, networking or VM-instance pricing. The page gives examples of $0.35 per GPU-hour for a T4, $2.48 for a V100 and $1.46 for a P100, but those are GPU components, not complete virtual-machine prices.

Google also documents sustained-use discounts, resource-based committed-use discounts and separate Spot GPU prices. Spot prices are dynamic and can change up to once every 30 days, and Spot VMs do not receive sustained-use discounts. Read the regional rules on Google Cloud’s GPU pricing page and use its calculator with the machine type, disk and network you plan to deploy.

What must be matched before a price comparison is fair?

A GPU name alone is not a specification. Use this checklist before copying a rate into a budget.

  • Accelerator variant: H100 PCIe and H100 SXM differ in memory bandwidth and interconnect. H100, H200 and B200 have different memory capacities and performance profiles.
  • Memory requirement: A card that cannot hold your model, optimizer states or batch will force sharding, offloading or a more expensive model configuration.
  • Interconnect and topology: Multi-GPU training can depend on NVLink, PCIe layout and cross-node networking. Eight inexpensive isolated GPUs are not equivalent to one tightly coupled HGX system.
  • Billing mode: On-demand buys flexibility; spot or preemptible capacity trades price for reclamation risk.
  • Region: GPU inventories, taxes, data-residency rules and prices differ by zone. A nominally cheap region may be unavailable or require paid data transfer.
  • Whole instance: Add vCPUs, host RAM, boot and attached disks, snapshots, load balancers, storage operations and egress.
  • Utilization: Include queue time, data loading, compilation, checkpointing and idle periods rather than assuming 100% GPU duty cycle.

How do you calculate the real cost of an AI workload?

Start with the resources that run continuously, then add event-driven charges and the cost of failed or interrupted work. A simple estimate is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Total cost = accelerator time + host compute + storage + data transfer + orchestration and services + restart overhead − applicable discounts.

  1. Define the workload. Record GPU model and count, expected wall-clock hours, peak VRAM, CPU and RAM needs, storage size, region and whether jobs can be interrupted.
  2. Price the complete machine. For a multi-GPU instance, use the provider’s instance rate; do not multiply a single-GPU rate unless the provider bills each card independently. Confirm minimum billing increments and whether stopped instances continue charging for disks.
  3. Add data movement. Price ingress, egress, cross-zone traffic and reads from object storage. Moving a large dataset or checkpoints between clouds can erase an hourly-rate advantage.
  4. Model utilization. Multiply the hourly bill by actual occupied time, including setup and data staging. If the GPU averages 70% utilization, the unused 30% is still paid for.
  5. Apply discounts conservatively. Separate one-time promotions, sustained-use discounts, committed-use contracts and spot rates. Use the discount only if your utilization and term make it realistic.
  6. Add interruption risk. Estimate checkpoint storage, restart time and engineering effort for spot capacity. Compare expected completed work, not just nominal hours.

Worked comparison for an eight-GPU H100 job

Using CoreWeave’s listed HGX H100 rates, 100 hours costs $4,924 on demand or $1,971 at the spot instance rate before other charges. The spot option saves $2,953 if it runs uninterrupted, but a reclaimed instance can add waiting and recomputation. A one-GPU RunPod calculation cannot be substituted for this eight-GPU topology when the model requires all eight cards.

Are spot GPUs reliable enough for training?

Spot GPUs are suitable for checkpointed, restartable work and poor for jobs that cannot tolerate interruption. The right choice depends on recovery design rather than a universal reliability percentage; the cited pricing pages do not promise uninterrupted capacity.

Use spot when

  • Your training loop writes frequent, versioned checkpoints to durable storage.
  • Workers can rejoin a queue and resume from the last checkpoint.
  • You can spread replicas across zones or providers.
  • A longer or uncertain completion time is acceptable.

Prefer on demand when

  • You have a deadline, interactive inference traffic or a stateful multi-node job.
  • Restarting would require rebuilding a large in-memory dataset or losing expensive progress.
  • Your workload cannot be divided into independently retryable stages.

For either mode, monitor termination notices, test restoration from a checkpoint and keep the launch configuration reproducible. A lower spot rate without an automated recovery path is usually a false economy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When can AWS, Azure or Google Cloud be cheaper overall?

A hyperscaler can have the lower total cost when integration savings exceed its GPU premium. This commonly occurs when your data, networking and security controls already live there.

  • Data locality: Training directly against existing object storage avoids a large export and duplicate dataset.
  • Committed capacity: Existing resource-based commitments or enterprise discounts can reduce the effective rate below public on-demand pricing.
  • Managed operations: Batch schedulers, Kubernetes integrations, monitoring, secret management and policy controls can replace custom engineering.
  • Compliance and support: Required certifications, private links or support contracts may be available only in your established environment.
  • Elastic mixed workloads: If CPUs, databases and GPUs scale together, consolidating billing and operations can be less expensive than splitting the stack.

Do not assume a commitment is a saving until you compare the minimum spend with your forecast utilization. An unused reservation is a cost, not a discount.

What is the cheapest cloud for training an AI model?

There is no universal winner. For a single, well-specified GPU running a tolerant workload, the cited RunPod rates are the lowest on-demand examples. For an eight-GPU job that can be interrupted, CoreWeave spot pricing is compelling. For data-intensive production training inside an existing enterprise platform, a hyperscaler may produce the lowest all-in cost despite a higher GPU line item.

Workload condition Likely starting point Reason to verify
One H100, flexible region, raw hourly rental RunPod Confirm SXM versus PCIe, memory and stock.
Eight tightly coupled H100 or H200 GPUs CoreWeave HGX Compare topology, network and full-instance charges.
Interruptible batch training CoreWeave spot or another documented spot pool Budget for reclamation and restart time.
GPU attached to existing enterprise data Current AWS, Azure or Google Cloud environment Include commitments, egress and managed-service savings.
Inference API with variable demand Provider’s serverless or autoscaling offering Compare request pricing, cold starts and minimums rather than Pod rates.

How should you choose between RunPod, CoreWeave and a hyperscaler?

  1. Lock the technical target. Specify accelerator, VRAM, GPU count, interconnect, CPU, RAM, storage and region.
  2. Separate job classes. Price interactive development, fault-tolerant training and production inference independently; they have different availability and scaling needs.
  3. Build a complete cost sheet. Include host, disk, network, data transfer, idle time, orchestration and support.
  4. Measure a representative slice. Run the same model, batch size, precision, data pipeline and checkpoint policy on each candidate. Record samples per second, tokens per second, startup time and interruption recovery.
  5. Stress availability. Check whether the required GPU can be provisioned in the required zone at the times your jobs start. A low list price is irrelevant without capacity.
  6. Choose the least expensive reliable option. Include engineering time and failure recovery in the decision, then revisit rates as providers update price sheets.

What are the main pitfalls in GPU cloud pricing?

Comparing unlike GPUs

An H100 SXM, H100 PCIe, H200 and B200 can have different memory, bandwidth and scaling behavior. Select the card from your model’s memory and throughput requirements first, then compare its price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dividing a multi-GPU price incorrectly

CoreWeave’s figures are for eight-GPU HGX instances. Dividing by eight is useful only when all eight GPUs are allocated and your workload benefits from that topology; renting one card may require a different product.

Ignoring non-GPU billing

Google’s documentation explicitly separates GPU cost from machine type and excludes disk, images and networking. Similar omissions can exist in a headline rate elsewhere, so request an itemized estimate.

Treating spot as guaranteed

Spot pricing is a capacity market, not a service-level promise. Design checkpointing and retries before relying on it.

Using a stale price

The RunPod figures above were updated October 8, 2026, and the CloudRift comparison was read October 15, 2026. Prices, discounts and stock change; record the date, region and billing mode with every quote.

What should a procurement test record?

Keep a short, reproducible benchmark sheet for each provider:

  • Exact GPU SKU, memory and host configuration.
  • Region, image, driver and framework versions.
  • Startup time from allocation to first useful batch.
  • Steady-state throughput and GPU utilization.
  • Storage and network throughput, including data-loader stalls.
  • On-demand, spot and committed rates with their effective dates.
  • Interruption count, checkpoint restore time and lost work.
  • Complete invoice components, including egress and idle resources.

This record turns a price-sheet comparison into a workload-specific total-cost decision without assuming that the lowest GPU-hour number is the lowest cost per result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a training job between GPU clouds without changing the model?

Usually you can move containerized code and checkpoints, but drivers, CUDA versions, filesystem paths, networking and GPU topology still need validation. Exporting datasets and checkpoints may also create transfer charges and delays, so keep images and launch scripts portable before you need to fail over.

Does a cheaper GPU-hour mean lower cost per token?

No. Cost per token depends on throughput, sequence length, batching, precision, utilization and input pipeline speed. Measure tokens per second on the exact model and serving configuration instead of dividing an hourly price by a vendor’s theoretical peak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much storage should I budget for checkpoints?

The correct amount depends on checkpoint frequency, model size, optimizer state and retention policy. Keep at least the number of simultaneous recovery points your restart plan requires, and price both durable storage and writes or reads when the provider bills those operations separately.

Can I combine spot and on-demand GPUs in one training run?

A common pattern is to keep a small on-demand coordinator or minimum worker set and add spot workers opportunistically. Your distributed-training framework must tolerate workers joining and leaving; otherwise the cheapest mix can increase synchronization failures and total completion time.
