The reliable way to price rented GPUs is to estimate the whole workload, not just the advertised GPU-hour. Use Total cost = (GPU or instance rate × billed runtime) + host CPU/RAM or VM + storage + data transfer + ancillary services + taxes − credits and discounts. Then divide by a useful unit such as a completed job, training step, generated token, image, or productive GPU-hour. Your result depends on GPU count and model, host configuration, region, billing granularity, startup and idle time, storage retention, network destinations, interruption tolerance, and contract terms. A provider calculator or pricing API should validate the final SKU because rates, capacity, discounts, taxes, and transfer charges change frequently.

What does the total cost of renting a GPU include?

The bill normally combines accelerator time with the resources and services around it. A low headline GPU rate can therefore produce a much higher all-in cost when a job needs a large host machine, persistent checkpoints, substantial egress, or paid orchestration.

Total cost = (billed GPU or instance rate × billed runtime) + host VM/CPU/RAM + storage + data transfer + ancillary services + taxes − credits and discounts

Cost component How to calculate it Questions that change the result
Accelerator Rate for the selected GPU or complete instance × billable time × GPU count when pricing is per GPU Which model, memory size, interconnect, region, and on-demand or discounted SKU?
Host resources VM, vCPU, RAM, operating-system, or worker charge × billable time Is the host bundled with the GPU, or billed separately?
Storage Provisioned GB-month, snapshot, IOPS, or throughput rate × retention period What remains allocated while a machine is stopped or a deployment is idle?
Network Ingress, egress, inter-zone transfer, NAT, load-balancer, or processing rate × gigabytes Where does data go, and which free tiers apply?
Ancillary services Metered monitoring, orchestration, IP, endpoint, image, Marketplace, or support fees Does the workload require services outside the GPU host?
Taxes and credits Add applicable taxes and duties; subtract valid credits, grants, or discounts Which billing account, country, contract, and tax exemption are in effect?

Keep the assumptions next to every estimate. Record GPU model and count, VRAM, CPU and RAM, region, expected wall-clock duration, utilization, idle periods, dataset and checkpoint sizes, ingress and egress gigabytes, billing unit, commitment term, and interruption tolerance.

How do I define the workload before looking at prices?

Write a resource and time specification first. Choosing a price before defining the job makes quotes look comparable when they are not.

Describe the job type

  • Training: note the number of GPUs, expected steps or epochs, checkpoint frequency, and whether distributed networking is required.
  • Fine-tuning: record the base model, dataset size, VRAM requirement, evaluation passes, and how often checkpoints are retained.
  • Inference: estimate requests, concurrency, context length, tokens, latency target, and whether an endpoint must remain warm.
  • Batch processing: count files, images, or records and include queue, staging, and result-download time.
  • Interactive development: include notebook startup, package installation, data preparation, pauses, and time the GPU sits allocated but unused.

Specify the resource shape

State the minimum VRAM, GPU model or acceptable alternatives, GPU count, vCPU, RAM, local disk, persistent disk, and any required interconnect. A single-GPU price cannot stand in for an eight-GPU host if the workload needs eight accelerators or a particular fabric.

Set location and reliability assumptions

Choose the region that can hold the requested capacity and is close to the data or users. Decide whether the job can be interrupted, restarted from a checkpoint, or delayed while capacity returns. These choices determine whether on-demand, Spot, reserved, committed-use, savings-plan, or capacity-block pricing is appropriate.

How do I identify the billable SKU?

Match the exact GPU and host configuration to the provider’s billable product. Never multiply a standalone GPU rate until you have confirmed that the provider does not also charge for a VM, machine type, or serverless worker.

Provider and product behavior What the published pricing establishes Checked
Google Cloud GPU-attached machines Each attached GPU adds cost in addition to the machine type. The provider’s Pricing Calculator estimates the combined instance cost, while GPU, disk, machine memory, and network usage are separate considerations. Oct 2026
Runpod Pods and Serverless Pods, Serverless, and Clusters have separate pricing. Deployment and storage choices affect the total; Pod GPU rental is advertised as billed by the second with no egress fees or minimums. Oct 2026
AWS EC2 On-Demand The instance is charged only while it is running, with a 60-second minimum, then per-second calculation. The instance price includes the selected machine shape, rather than a universal GPU-only meter. Oct 2026
Microsoft Azure virtual machines VM price varies with size, region, and instance state. Separate meters can include storage, virtual networking, bandwidth, monitoring, Bastion, load balancing, and Marketplace items. Oct 2026

For a managed or serverless product, identify whether the quoted rate covers only accelerator execution or also includes a worker, request handling, container, or endpoint. For a VM product, capture the complete machine SKU and attached GPU rather than combining unrelated rates from different configurations.

How do I convert runtime into billable time?

Use the provider’s billing unit exactly and include every period that remains chargeable. Your measured model runtime is often shorter than the billable lifetime of the allocation.

  1. Mark allocation start: include provisioning, image pull, driver setup, data staging, and package installation if the resource is already metered.
  2. Mark productive execution: record training, inference, or batch-processing time and the number of GPUs actually allocated.
  3. Mark idle and queue periods: include notebook pauses, autoscaling lag, debugging, and waiting while a running instance remains reserved.
  4. Mark shutdown: include teardown or final upload time when the provider still bills the resource.
  5. Round according to the SKU: convert the interval to seconds, minutes, or hours and apply minimums before multiplying by the rate.

AWS documents that On-Demand EC2 charges apply only while an instance is in the running state, with a 60-second minimum and per-second charging afterward. Runpod states that Pod GPU rental is billed by the second, so a three-minute run is charged for three minutes under that product statement. Azure documents minute-level partial-hour charging for VMs. These rules make short jobs especially sensitive to startup and shutdown overhead.

For a workload that runs for t seconds at a rate of r dollars per hour, convert first: billable GPU cost = r × (t ÷ 3,600). Apply any minimum-duration rule before this multiplication.

How do I calculate accelerator and host charges?

Use the complete billable configuration. If the provider quotes a full instance, multiply that instance rate by billable time; if it quotes GPU and host resources separately, calculate both lines and add them.

Per-GPU pricing

For a rate published per GPU, use GPU cost = GPU rate × number of GPUs × billed hours. Confirm that the rate refers to the same model, memory tier, region, and billing option as your request. Do not apply a one-GPU rate to a multi-GPU host when the provider’s product has a different bundle or interconnect charge.

Full-instance pricing

For a machine rate, use instance cost = instance rate × billed time. Treat the GPU count as a specification of that instance, not another multiplier, unless the price sheet explicitly separates the accelerator meter.

Separate host or worker pricing

Add vCPU, RAM, operating-system, host, or serverless-worker charges whenever they are separate meters. A serverless endpoint can continue charging for provisioned workers even when request volume is low, while a VM can accrue host cost during data preparation and checkpoint uploads.

How much can storage add to a GPU job?

Storage is charged for allocation and retention, not only for the minutes when a GPU is computing. Include boot or container disks, persistent volumes, snapshots, checkpoints, provisioned IOPS, and throughput where applicable.

Runpod’s pricing page, updated October 8, 2026, lists container disk at $0.10 per GB per month, network storage at $0.07 per GB per month below 1 TB, and $0.05 per GB per month above 1 TB. Those are storage meters, separate from the GPU rental rate, and deployment choices affect which ones apply.

  1. List each disk or volume and its provisioned capacity.
  2. Multiply capacity by the provider’s GB-month rate and the fraction of a month retained.
  3. Calculate snapshots and checkpoint copies separately if they use another meter.
  4. Model stopped or idle periods independently when storage continues after compute is released.
  5. Delete temporary volumes and old checkpoints according to the provider’s retention semantics.

A job that runs for minutes can still create a month-long charge if a persistent volume is left allocated. Conversely, deleting a volume before a restart may force a costly dataset upload, so compare retention cost with transfer and preparation time.

How do network charges change the all-in price?

Estimate traffic by destination, direction, region, and service path. Separate ingress, internet egress, inter-zone or inter-region transfer, NAT processing, load-balancer processing, and API data-processing charges.

  • Ingress: record dataset uploads and image or model downloads into the provider. Some services do not charge for ingress, but verify the SKU.
  • Egress: count generated outputs, checkpoints copied elsewhere, user responses, and replicas sent to another region or provider.
  • Internal traffic: distributed training and multi-tier inference can incur inter-zone or cross-region charges even when traffic does not reach the public internet.
  • Free tiers: apply them only to eligible services, regions, and billing-account aggregation rules.

AWS’s current EC2 On-Demand information lists a 100 GB monthly internet data-transfer-out free tier aggregated across eligible AWS services and regions, excluding China and GovCloud, followed by regional per-GB rates. Runpod states that Pods have no egress fees. Azure bills bandwidth by gigabyte and can add virtual-network or load-balancer processing. These statements apply to the named products and should not be generalized to every service from the same provider.

Use network cost = Σ(destination GB × applicable rate) − eligible free tier. Keep free-tier eligibility and the destination region in the calculation rather than subtracting a generic allowance from every estimate.

Which ancillary services and taxes should I add?

List every service that exists outside the accelerator meter. Common additions include managed Kubernetes or orchestration, serverless endpoints, monitoring and log ingestion, static or reserved IP addresses, load balancers, Bastion access, image or Marketplace licenses, support plans, and data-processing services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Azure specifically identifies VM, storage, virtual-network, bandwidth, Azure Monitor, Bastion, load-balancer, and Marketplace meters as possible contributors. AWS notes that published prices exclude applicable taxes and duties. Apply the tax treatment of the billing account and destination rather than assuming a tax-inclusive headline rate.

Credits and promotional grants should be subtracted only when they apply to the SKU, region, account, and billing period. Show the pre-credit subtotal, credits, taxes, and final amount as separate lines so a temporary credit is not mistaken for a sustainable operating cost.

Should I use on-demand, Spot, reserved, or committed pricing?

Choose the discount method only after deciding how much interruption, commitment, and capacity risk the job can absorb. A lower nominal rate is not equivalent to a guaranteed, uninterrupted GPU.

Pricing mode Potential advantage Constraint to model
On-demand Flexible start and stop with no long commitment Usually the reference price; capacity and regional rate still vary
Spot or preemptible Can substantially reduce compute cost Interruption, eviction, changing availability, restart overhead, and possible checkpoint or data-transfer cost
Reserved or committed use Lower effective rate for predictable usage Term commitment, utilization risk, SKU or region restrictions, and possible payment obligations
Savings plan or capacity block May trade a contract or reservation for price or capacity predictability Eligibility rules, term length, and unused commitment exposure

Google Cloud publishes Spot discounts of 60–91% versus corresponding on-demand prices for most machine types and GPUs. The range is a provider-wide statement, not a guarantee for every GPU, region, or date. Microsoft Azure says Spot pricing varies by region and SKU and can be queried through its Retail Prices API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an interruptible run, estimate expected cost = discounted runtime cost + restart count × restart overhead + lost work cost. Include checkpoint storage and re-upload traffic. For a committed plan, calculate utilization: a nominally cheap commitment can cost more per useful GPU-hour if the resource sits unused.

How do I normalize the result to a useful unit?

Hourly price is useful for a quote, but operational decisions need a productivity denominator.

  • Cost per useful GPU-hour = all-in job cost ÷ productive GPU-hours
  • Cost per completed job = all-in job cost ÷ jobs completed
  • Cost per training step = all-in job cost ÷ successful steps
  • Cost per million tokens = all-in inference cost ÷ tokens processed × 1,000,000
  • Cost per image or record = all-in batch cost ÷ outputs delivered

Use productive time rather than allocated time when reporting efficiency, and report utilization beside the figure. An eight-GPU host that spends half its allocation waiting for input has eight billed GPUs but only four GPU-hours of effective work per wall-clock hour.

How can I run a sensitivity analysis?

Recalculate the estimate after changing the assumptions that commonly dominate the bill. A small spreadsheet with one row per scenario is sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Variable Low case Base case High case Why it matters
Billable runtime Fast completion Expected duration Slow run plus startup and retries Compute and host charges scale with time
Utilization Near full Observed or planned average Idle-heavy development Lower utilization raises cost per useful unit
Egress Results retained in-region Normal downloads Large cross-region or internet export Transfer tiers and processing can dominate output-heavy jobs
Storage retention Ephemeral cleanup Checkpoint retention Long-lived volumes and snapshots GB-month charges continue after compute ends
Availability On-demand success One retry Repeated Spot interruptions Restarts consume time, storage, and transfer

Report the range and identify the assumption with the largest dollar impact. This is more informative than presenting a single precise figure built on uncertain runtime or transfer estimates.

What is a defensible step-by-step calculation?

Use this procedure for a quote, budget request, or provider comparison.

  1. Define the job: training, fine-tuning, inference, batch, or interactive; output target; deadline; and interruption tolerance.
  2. Specify resources: GPU model and count, VRAM, CPU, RAM, interconnect, boot disk, persistent storage, and region.
  3. Select the SKU: choose the complete Pod, VM, instance, serverless worker, or cluster configuration that actually supplies those resources.
  4. Measure billable time: include startup, staging, productive execution, idle periods, retries, shutdown, and any minimum-duration rule.
  5. Calculate compute: multiply the GPU or full-instance rate by billable time and add separately metered host or worker resources.
  6. Calculate storage: price boot disks, persistent volumes, snapshots, checkpoints, IOPS, and retained idle storage for their actual lifetimes.
  7. Calculate network: estimate ingress, egress, inter-zone traffic, NAT, load-balancer processing, and eligible free tiers by destination.
  8. Add services and taxes: include monitoring, orchestration, endpoints, IPs, licenses, support, duties, and taxes.
  9. Apply discounts last: show on-demand, Spot, and commitment cases separately, with terms, interruption behavior, and utilization assumptions.
  10. Normalize and stress-test: divide by useful output and rerun the calculation with slower runtime, lower utilization, higher egress, and longer storage retention.
  11. Verify the quote: enter the same assumptions into the provider’s current calculator or pricing API immediately before committing.

How should I compare two AI cloud providers fairly?

Hold the workload constant before comparing rates. A valid comparison uses the same GPU capability, VRAM, GPU count, host resources, region, runtime, storage lifetime, network destinations, and reliability target.

Comparison axis What to record
Billing unit Per second, minute, hour, request, worker, or complete instance; include minimum duration
Hardware GPU model, VRAM, CPU, RAM, interconnect, local disk, and actual GPU count
Capacity Region, queue time, availability, quota, and ability to obtain all requested GPUs together
Storage Boot, container, persistent, snapshot, IOPS, throughput, and stopped-resource rates
Network Ingress, internet egress, inter-zone transfer, NAT, load-balancer processing, and free tiers
Reliability On-demand guarantee, Spot interruption behavior, restart process, SLA, and checkpoint needs
Operations Startup time, image management, monitoring, orchestration, endpoint, and support overhead
Commercial terms Taxes, credits, commitment length, regional restrictions, and cancellation rules

Compare all-in cost per useful output, not only the cheapest advertised GPU rate. A provider with a higher accelerator price can be cheaper if it bills precise seconds, includes egress for the relevant product, or avoids a separate host and orchestration charge.

What mistakes make GPU cost estimates wrong?

  • Multiplying a GPU-only rate without the host: verify whether VM, CPU, RAM, or worker charges are separate.
  • Using model runtime as billable runtime: include provisioning, data staging, idle notebooks, retries, and teardown.
  • Ignoring minimums and rounding: AWS On-Demand EC2 has a 60-second minimum; other products use their own units.
  • Assuming stopped means free: compute may stop while persistent disks, snapshots, IPs, or endpoints continue charging.
  • Omitting egress: count outputs, checkpoints, cross-region replication, and distributed-training traffic.
  • Comparing unlike discounts: do not place an interruptible Spot rate beside guaranteed on-demand capacity without pricing restart risk.
  • Applying a free tier universally: check service, region, account aggregation, and eligibility conditions.
  • Hiding taxes and credits: show both so a temporary credit or tax exclusion does not distort the budget.
  • Using stale rates: refresh the official calculator or pricing API whenever the GPU, region, contract, or workload changes.

What records should I retain for an auditable estimate?

Save the SKU name, region, quote date, billing unit, rate source, GPU count, host shape, storage capacities, transfer assumptions, tax treatment, discounts, and commitment terms. Keep the workload timing log that produced the runtime and utilization assumptions. When the bill arrives, reconcile each meter against this record; unexplained differences usually indicate a changed SKU, an idle resource, a transfer path, or a service that was omitted from the original model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it really cost to rent an H100?

There is no single durable H100 price: the answer changes with provider, region, host configuration, billing mode, utilization, storage, and network traffic. Request the complete H100 SKU quote and calculate the all-in workload total rather than multiplying a headline accelerator rate.

Do I pay for the GPU or the whole virtual machine?

It depends on the product. Some services meter a complete instance or Pod, while others add an attached GPU charge to a separately priced machine; inspect the SKU so the host is neither omitted nor counted twice.

Are stopped instances still charging me?

Stopping usually ends compute metering only when the provider defines billing by running state. Persistent disks, snapshots, reserved IPs, endpoints, and other allocated services can remain billable, so check each meter before leaving a deployment stopped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is per-second billing always cheaper for short jobs?

Fine-grained billing helps when a job truly starts and ends quickly, but startup, image pulls, data transfer, and minimum charges can still dominate. Compare the complete billed interval and the work completed, not the time spent in the model kernel.

What information should I enter in a provider pricing calculator?

Enter the exact GPU or instance SKU, count, region, runtime, host resources, storage capacity and retention, ingress and egress destinations, billing option, and any commitment. Include expected idle and retry time so the calculator reflects the deployment rather than an idealized compute-only run.
