Use a 30, 45, or 60 FPS cap, enable temporal upscaling, and lower shadows, Lumen global illumination, effects, foliage, and view distance first. That is the practical route to a playable Gothic 1 Remake experience. The official minimum is already an Intel Core i7-7700K or Ryzen 5 1600X, 16 GB of RAM, an RTX 2070 or RX 6700 XT with 8 GB VRAM, DirectX 12, and an SSD. This is an Unreal Engine 5 rebuild, not a lightly updated 2001 game, so PCs below that floor need compromises and may still hitch.
Start with Profile B below if your desktop is close to the listed minimum. Profile A is for weaker or thermally limited systems; Profile C is for faster 8 GB cards that can hold 60 FPS in the Old Camp and forest routes. The Steam minimum does not promise a particular frame rate or resolution.

| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profile A — 30 FPS survival | Below or barely at the official minimum; thin laptops | 1080p with Performance upscaling, Low lighting and shadows, 30 FPS cap | Windows 10/11 64-bit; Steam or GOG | Oct 2026 |
| Profile B — 45 FPS smoother | RTX 2070 or RX 6700 XT with 8 GB VRAM | 1080p, Quality upscaling, High-based lighting, Medium shadows, 45 FPS cap | Windows 10/11 64-bit; Steam or GOG | Oct 2026 |
| Profile C — 60 FPS if stable | Stronger 8 GB cards such as RTX 3060/4060 class | 1080p Medium, Quality upscaling, 60 FPS cap only after camp testing | Windows 10/11 64-bit; Steam or GOG | Oct 2026 |
What does Gothic 1 Remake require on PC?
The current Steam specification lists Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 16 GB RAM, 8 GB VRAM, 60 GB of storage and an SSD at minimum. The named minimum GPUs are the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070; the minimum CPUs are the Intel Core i7-7700K and AMD Ryzen 5 1600X. Steam recommends 32 GB RAM, 12 GB VRAM, a Ryzen 5 3600X or i7-7700K, and an RTX 3070 Ti or RX 6800 XT, with an NVMe drive preferred.

The 12 GB recommended line is a memory budget, not a guarantee that every named card has 12 GB: many RTX 3070 Ti boards have 8 GB, while the RX 6800 XT has 16 GB. If your GPU has less than 8 GB, texture-streaming hitches can remain even after other settings are reduced.

Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic have not published an official FPS or resolution target for either tier. A 30 or 60 FPS figure in a third-party guide is therefore a test result or recommendation, not a promise. The free Nyras Prologue demo on Steam and GOG is the safest way to check whether your hardware can sustain a route before buying.
Which low-end profile should you use?
Choose a cap from the worst section of the game, not an empty field. The Old Camp, swamp camp and dense forest paths put more load on lighting, NPCs and streaming than open ground.
Profile A: 30 FPS survival
Use this when the computer is below the official floor, a laptop loses clock speed under heat, or a 45 FPS cap repeatedly breaks. A locked 30 feels better than an uncapped 35–50 with constant pacing changes.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920×1080; use 1280×720 only if 1080p still misses 30 |
| Upscaler | DLSS, FSR, XeSS or TSR at Performance; use Balanced if Performance is too soft |
| Frame generation | Off; RTX 20-series cards do not support DLSS Frame Generation |
| VSync | Off with G-Sync/FreeSync; otherwise turn Streamline Reflex off before enabling VSync |
| Frame-rate limit | 30 FPS |
| Global illumination | Low |
| Shadows | Low |
| Foliage and view distance | Low |
| Textures | Medium or Low, matching available VRAM |
| Effects, reflections, post-processing, shading and wind | Low |
| Landscape | Medium if stable; otherwise Low |
| Motion blur and depth of field | 0 |
Profile B: 45 FPS smoother default
This is the most defensible starting point for a true minimum-spec desktop. PC Games Hardware began with the High preset, reduced shadows to Medium, retained High lighting and global illumination, raised textures, view distance and anti-aliasing toward Gothic quality where VRAM allowed, and enabled DLSS Quality. In its foggy swamp-camp entrance scene on an RTX 2070, that combination produced a solid 45 FPS; much of Minental was closer to 60.

| Setting | Starting value | Adjustment rule |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and mode | 1920×1080; in-game Fullscreen or Borderless | There is no exclusive-fullscreen path |
| Upscaler | DLSS 4.5 Quality on RTX; FSR 3.1.4 Quality or TSR if utilization falls; XeSS on Intel | Move to Balanced, then Performance, only when the cap fails |
| Frame-rate limit | 45 FPS | Try 60 only after the Old Camp holds it |
| Frame generation | Off | Keep the base frame rate stable before considering it on supported newer GPUs |
| Reflex | On; Boost Off on a weak GPU | Disable Reflex before enabling VSync |
| Field of view | 70–90 degrees; 75 is a useful low-end starting point | Wider FOV adds work; raise it only if needed |
| Anti-aliasing | Medium | Keep temporal reconstruction enabled |
| Shadows | Medium | Use Low if camps still dip below 45 |
| Global illumination | High for the PCGH visual balance | Use Medium or Low when swamp lighting is the bottleneck |
| Reflections | Medium | Lower after GI and shadows |
| Post-processing | Low or Medium | Set motion blur and depth of field to 0 |
| Textures | Medium on 8 GB | Use High only when VRAM remains stable during a long session |
| Effects | Low | Raise to Medium only with headroom |
| Foliage and shading | Low or Medium | Lower foliage before texture quality |
| Landscape | Medium | Reduce if distant terrain is the remaining GPU load |
| Wind | Low | It has little measured GPU impact |
| Bloom, ambient occlusion, sharpening | Bloom/AO 50–70; sharpening 30–60 | Reduce sharpening if reconstruction looks noisy |
On older RTX cards, PC Games Hardware found DLSS 4.5’s Transformer Model 2.0 can be heavy: FSR 3.1.4 or TSR may deliver roughly 10 percent more FPS, but with softer or more shimmering detail. Keep DLSS Quality if image stability matters more than that extra margin.
Profile C: 60 FPS when the route proves it
Use this on a faster 8 GB card, such as an RTX 3060/4060-class model or an RX 6700 XT with headroom. Start at 1080p Medium with a Quality upscaler, Reflex On and Frame Generation Off. Medium for view distance, anti-aliasing, shadows, global illumination, reflections, post-processing, textures, effects, foliage, shading and landscape is a reasonable sheet; leave wind Low and depth of field at 0. Cap at 60 only if the Old Camp and forests stay there. If they do not, drop to 45 instead of leaving the limiter at Unlimited.
Which settings give the biggest FPS gains?
Lower the settings that feed Lumen lighting and shadow maps first. PC Games Hardware’s RTX 4090 isolation runs at native ultrawide QHD measured approximate GPU savings as each option fell from the experimental maximum to lower levels:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Option | Approximate saving one step lower | Approximate saving at lowest |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow quality | 10% | 20% |
| Global illumination/overall lighting | 15% | 25% |
| Effects | 10% | 15% |
| Landscape | 2% | 10% |
| View distance | 2% | 7% |
| Shading | 3% | 7% |
| Foliage | 3% | 3% |
| Anti-aliasing, reflections, post-processing, textures and wind | About 0–3% in that test; textures mainly control VRAM pressure | |
Wccftech reached a similar practical conclusion at 1440p: Medium shadows and effects were worthwhile cuts, while High global illumination preserved fog and bounce light better than Medium. Its optimized mix improved average FPS from 92 to 108 and 1% lows from 75 to 80, but the 0.1% low fell from 74 to 63. That result is a reminder that a higher average can hide harder hitches; combine slider changes with a cap.

Do not expect wind, texture quality or small post-process sliders to rescue a GPU-limited scene. Textures are primarily a VRAM decision: keep them high enough for image quality, then lower them one step if streaming hitches appear.
How should you configure DLSS, FSR, XeSS and TSR?
Enable temporal upscaling before abandoning 1080p for 720p. Choose Quality first, Balanced when the cap fails, and Performance for the 30 FPS survival profile; Ultra Performance is a last resort because it is visibly soft.
- DLSS 4.5: available on RTX GPUs and often the cleanest reconstruction, but its newer transformer model can reduce utilization on RTX 20-series cards.
- FSR 3.1.4: works across GPU vendors and can be faster on older RTX hardware, with more softness or shimmer in some scenes.
- XeSS 1.3: the natural first choice on supported Intel GPUs.
- TSR: the built-in Unreal option and a useful fallback when vendor upscalers behave poorly.
Frame Generation is not a solution for the minimum RTX 2070: that card cannot use DLSS Frame Generation. On supported 40- and 50-series cards, add it only after the base FPS is stable, because generated frames do not fix traversal stutter or a weak CPU. Nvidia Streamline Reflex reduces latency; use Boost only when a stronger GPU has headroom.
What causes Gothic 1 Remake stuttering and hitching?
Different symptoms point to different limits. Apply the matching fix instead of lowering every slider.

- Hitches during the first loads or traversal: Unreal Engine 5 shader and PSO work can continue after loading. Let initial compilation finish and expect some traversal hitches even with a warm cache.
- Hitching while moving through the world: install the game on the required SSD or, preferably, an NVMe drive. HDD asset streaming is a common exploration-stutter cause.
- Stutter after a long session: VRAM or RAM pressure is likely. Lower textures one step, close background applications and restart the game.
- Bad pacing in NPC-heavy camps: reduce view distance, cap FPS and close browsers, launchers and overlays. Camp scenes can become CPU-limited even when GPU usage is low.
- Unstable high FPS: replace Unlimited with 30, 45 or 60, chosen from the worst route. An even cap is generally smoother than a 42–60 swing.
Disable overlapping overlays while troubleshooting. Discord, a GPU overlay and an overclocking monitor running together have been associated with poor Unreal Engine 5 pacing in community guides. Use one frame limiter only.
What laptop and Windows changes help?
- Plug the laptop into AC power and select its performance power mode.
- In Windows Graphics settings, assign the game to the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Update the current GPU driver, then close browsers, launchers, RGB utilities and recording overlays.
- Watch performance after 10–20 minutes, not just during a five-minute run. If clocks fall as the chassis heats, lower the FPS cap and improve airflow.
- Optional experiments such as disabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling or Game Mode may help a particular system, but they are not game requirements and should be changed one at a time.
Should you edit the configuration files?
Use the in-game menu first. If a cap and the major sliders still miss your target, back up the two Windows configuration files before trying one community tweak.
- Open
%LOCALAPPDATA%G1RSavedConfigWindows. - Copy
GameUserSettings.iniandEngine.inito a safe backup folder. Saves are in%LOCALAPPDATA%G1RSavedSaveGames*.sav; do not edit or delete them. - Apply the low-end profile and test the same Old Camp, swamp-camp and forest route.
- If needed, try one configuration mod at a time. The “Best Performance Optimization” mod exposes hidden Unreal options and can disable heavy Lumen or virtual-shadow features; “Ultimate Engine Tweaks” targets Engine.ini and has separate G-Sync and non-G-Sync builds. Do not stack them.
- If performance worsens, remove the edited file and let the game regenerate it. Official patches can overwrite community changes; set a file read-only only after confirming the edit works.
Use the G1R path above. Some guides list a GothicRemake folder, but PCGamingWiki and Hone identify G1R for the current Windows build.

No. Alkimia Overdose is an experimental maximum preset intended for screenshots, not normal play. What should you do if the cap still fails?
Use the GPU-load pattern to choose the next change:
- GPU at 95–99%: lower global illumination, shadows, resolution or upscaler quality.
- GPU usage low while FPS is poor: the CPU or engine is pacing the scene; lower view distance, cap FPS and close applications.
- Stutter grows over time: lower textures and restart to relieve VRAM or RAM pressure.
- Hitching is tied to movement: move the installation from a hard drive to an SSD/NVMe.
- Laptop starts fast, then slows: address heat, power mode and airflow before reducing every visual setting.
If an RTX 2070 or RX 6700 XT cannot hold Profile B’s 45 FPS in the Old Camp after these steps, Profile A at 30 FPS is the honest target. PCs substantially below the official minimum may not achieve consistent traversal even at Low.
How were these settings selected?
The profiles combine the current Steam requirements with launch-window performance work from PC Games Hardware, Wccftech, GameRant, Sportskeeda, Hone, PCGamingWiki and other cited guides. Priority went to settings with the largest measured GPU cost—global illumination, shadows and effects—while preserving textures when VRAM allowed. The caps are based on the game’s heavy camps and forests rather than an official publisher FPS promise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an RTX 2070 run Gothic 1 Remake at 1080p?
Yes, but treat 45 FPS as the realistic starting target rather than assuming a locked 60. PC Games Hardware reported a solid 45 FPS in a foggy swamp-camp entrance with a High-based tune and DLSS Quality, while less demanding Minental areas approached 60.
Does Gothic 1 Remake need an SSD?
Yes. Steam lists an SSD as a minimum requirement and NVMe as recommended. An HDD can turn world traversal into asset-streaming hitching even when the GPU has enough rendering capacity.
Why does lowering the preset sometimes reduce GPU usage instead of raising FPS?
PC Games Hardware observed this oddity on an RTX 2070: presets below High could underutilize the GPU, and only Low restored some utilization. Lower individual cost centers and use an FPS cap instead of assuming the lowest preset is automatically fastest.
Can RTX 20-series cards use frame generation in this game?
No, the RTX 2070 cannot use DLSS Frame Generation. Use DLSS, FSR, XeSS or TSR for reconstruction; frame generation is relevant only to supported newer GPUs and should follow a stable base frame rate.
