It moved from public preview to general availability in May 2025, but Google’s documentation says its consumer IDE extensions stopped serving requests on June 18, 2026. The launch is therefore a historical announcement, not a description of a service that remains available through those extensions.
What Google announced in February 2025
Google introduced Gemini Code Assist for individuals as a free version of its AI coding assistant. Ryan J. Salva, then Senior Director of Product Management, described it as “a free version of our AI-coding assistant” in the February 25, 2025 announcement.
The preview was aimed at individual developers, including students, hobbyists, freelancers and startup founders. Google presented it as a way to use AI coding assistance without paying for an individual subscription. The extension supported Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDEs.
Features and limits at launch
Google said the individual edition provided three core capabilities inside supported IDEs:
#1 Best Overall
- Code completion: suggestions to help complete code as a developer works.
- Code generation: assistance producing code from a request.
- Chat: a conversational interface for coding questions and tasks.
At launch, Google stated that chat supported a context window of up to 128,000 input tokens and that the edition allowed up to 180,000 code completions per month. These were Google’s launch-era terms, not independent measurements or present-day limits. They should not be read as current access guarantees.
From preview to general availability
On May 20, 2025, Google said Gemini Code Assist for individuals had become generally available. The same Google I/O update said Gemini 2.5 powered both free and paid Code Assist at that time. That update records the product’s status and model context in May 2025; it does not establish current availability or later product terms.
When the individual IDE service stopped serving requests
Google’s consumer-account deprecation documentation says that, starting June 18, 2026, Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions stopped serving requests for the individual consumer tier and the specified Google AI Pro and Ultra tiers. As a result, the free individual IDE experience described in the 2025 announcement is no longer available through those extensions under the covered consumer accounts.
This is a specific statement about requests from the IDE extensions and the account tiers identified in Google’s documentation. It should not be generalized into a claim that every Google coding product, plan, or tool was discontinued; the cited material does not establish a replacement path.

How the free edition fit Google’s 2025 positioning
Google distinguished the individual edition from its paid Standard and Enterprise offerings. In its launch framing, it associated paid plans with capabilities such as productivity metrics, responses customized using private repositories and Google Cloud integrations. That describes Google’s positioning in February 2025; plan names and feature mixes can change, so it is not a current comparison of subscription options.

Google supported its 2025 announcement with several attributed figures. It reported that more than 75% of developers relied on AI in their daily responsibilities, citing its DORA research framing. The company also said that more than 25% of its own new code was generated by AI and then reviewed and accepted by engineers. Separately, it cited a forecast of 57.8 million developers worldwide by 2028. These are Google-reported claims and a forecast from 2025, not timeless or independently established measures of the current developer population.
