If Google Wallet will not pay when you tap your Android phone, check three separate things first: NFC is on, Google Wallet is the phone’s default contactless payment app, and the card you intend to use is ready for tap to pay. Then check the phone’s security eligibility and how you are holding it to the reader. The Settings labels vary by device, so search Settings for “NFC” rather than relying on one menu path.

1. Turn on NFC and set Google Wallet as the default payment app

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone and search for NFC. Turn NFC on if it is off.
  2. Open the NFC or contactless payment settings shown on your phone and choose Google Wallet as the default payment app.

Google’s NFC setup instructions say NFC must be enabled and set up correctly. Menu names and locations differ among Android devices; Settings search is a practical way to find the relevant controls.

2. Make sure the right card is ready for tap to pay

Open Google Wallet and check the card for a setup prompt or a suspension message. If the card is not set up, follow the app’s instructions and complete any verification required by your issuer. If Wallet says Card suspended, contact your bank.

The default payment app and default card are different settings. The Android setting determines which app handles contactless payments; the Wallet setting determines which card that app uses. Google says the first payment method added becomes the default for contactless payments. To select another card, open its details and tap Make default for tap to pay. See Google’s instructions for changing your default payment method.

Lianshi NFC ACR122U Contactless IC Card Reader Writer/USB + SDK + IC Card
  • It not only supports Mifare cards and Class A and B cards conforming to the ISO 14443 standard, but also supports NFC and FeliCa contactless technology.
  • This is a USB hot-pluggable device that complies with the CCID standard and is ideal for applications such as personal identity security authentication and online micropayments.
  • This is a USB full-speed device (12 Mbps), which reads NFC tags at 106 kbps、212 Kbps and 242 Kbps, allowing faster read and write speeds and higher efficiency
  • To increase the safety factor, you can choose to configure an ISO7816-3 compliant SAM card slot in the ACR122.
  • Widely used in areas such as access control, electronic payment, bus e-ticketing, highway toll collection systems, network verification, logistics, and supply chain management.

3. Check whether the phone and card meet the requirements

  • Screen lock and unlock: Set up a screen lock and unlock your phone before paying. Google’s contactless payment troubleshooting explains additional requirements and steps.
  • Device software and certification: Google Wallet requires a device that meets Google’s security requirements. Rooting, a custom ROM, an unlocked bootloader, or uncertified software can prevent tap to pay. Check Play Protect certification if eligibility is in question.
  • Work profile: Google says Wallet does not support work profiles.
  • Android and app updates: Google’s download guidance requires Android 9 or higher for the phone app and up-to-date Google Play Services and Wallet.
  • Card and region: Wallet availability and supported cards depend on country or region and the issuer. A physical card’s contactless feature does not guarantee that the card can be added to Google Wallet. Check Google’s card setup guidance.

If tap to pay worked before but stopped after a software update, Google advises contacting the phone manufacturer.

4. Retry the tap with the phone positioned carefully

  1. Unlock the phone before presenting it to the reader.
  2. Hold the phone close to the contactless reader for a few seconds instead of moving it away immediately.
  3. If the first position fails, try another part of the phone. The NFC antenna may be near the top or middle, depending on the device.
  4. Check for a contactless or Google Pay mark, and ask the cashier whether the terminal accepts mobile payments.
  5. If you use a thick case, try again without it if practical; distance or the case can interfere with NFC communication.

Google’s transaction troubleshooting steps cover positioning and terminal issues. If the terminal asks you to swipe or insert after a tap, follow its reset instructions or ask the cashier to reset it, then retry with the phone unlocked. That fallback alone does not show that Wallet is misconfigured.

5. Contact the bank if setup or payment is declined

If the card cannot be added, check that the name, billing details, and other information you entered match the issuer’s records. Confirm that both the card and issuer support Google Wallet in your region. If the card is suspended or a transaction is declined after the phone and terminal checks, ask the issuer about the card, provisioning, or the declined payment. Google’s card guidance notes that physical-card contactless support does not establish Google Wallet compatibility.
