Google Sites is a good option for SMBs in 2026 when the business needs a simple, collaborative, low-maintenance informational website. Google Sites is not a strong general-purpose choice for ecommerce, content marketing, advanced SEO, bookings, memberships, or businesses that need extensive design and marketing controls.
That distinction matters more than the platform’s “free” reputation. A five-to-ten-page service website, internal portal, event hub, or client resource center may work very well in Google Sites. A website expected to generate substantial organic traffic, sell products, manage bookings, or run sophisticated marketing campaigns will usually be better served by Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, or another specialized platform.
Key takeaways
- Google Sites is strongest for simple brochure websites, internal portals, event sites, and collaborative projects that do not require advanced functionality.
- Google Sites supports custom domains, but only the site owner can connect a domain, DNS changes can take up to 48 hours, and one site can have up to five custom domains.
- Google Sites does not provide a conventional native blog, shopping cart, product catalog, customer-account system, or full marketing-automation platform.
- Google Workspace is billed separately from the basic Google Sites editing experience; US Business Workspace pricing observed on August 16, 2026 ranged from $7 to $22 per user per month with annual billing.
- Google Sites can support a basic indexed website, but businesses that depend on sustained nonbranded SEO growth get fewer publishing and technical optimization controls than they would from a dedicated CMS.
What is Google Sites?
Google Sites is a browser-based website builder integrated with Google’s productivity and collaboration tools. Owners can create pages, add text and images, embed Google Drive files, publish a site, invite editors, and control viewing access through a document-like interface. Google’s official Google Sites help center documents site creation, page organization, publishing, sharing, embeds, Analytics, accessibility, troubleshooting, and data export.

- Ergonomic Posture Correction: Designed to elevate your laptop to the perfect eye level, this adjustable laptop stand significantly reduces neck, shoulder, and spinal fatigue. Transform your desk into a healthier workstation, ideal for long hours of typing, Zoom meetings, or gaming.
- Unshakable Dual-Rod Stability: Unlike single-hinge models, our stand features a highly engineered dual-support rod mechanism. It perfectly distributes weight to ensure a 100% wobble-free typing experience, safely supporting heavy-duty devices up to 22 lbs (10kg).
- Advanced Thermal Cooling Panel: Maximize your device's performance. The unique geometric heat-vent design on the upper panel provides superior airflow compared to standard solid stands. This continuous heat dissipation prevents your laptop from thermal throttling and hardware damage during intensive tasks.
- Universal 10-16” Compatibility: A versatile computer riser that seamlessly fits all 10 to 16-inch laptops. Broadly compatible with MacBook Pro/Air, Dell XPS, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Chromebook, and large gaming laptops. The anti-slip silicone pads firmly grip your device and protect it from scratches.
- Foldable, Portable & Ready to Go: Maximize your productivity anywhere. The dual-foldable design allows the stand to collapse completely flat in seconds. Easily slip it into your backpack or briefcase, making it the ultimate portable office accessory for business trips, cafes, or hybrid work setups.
The same simplicity creates the platform’s main limitation. Google Sites deliberately removes many controls available in Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Shopify, and Webflow. The result is a useful lightweight publishing and collaboration tool rather than a universal SMB website platform.
Is Google Sites good for small businesses?
Google Sites is good for small businesses when simplicity, collaboration, and low maintenance matter more than design freedom, search growth, transactions, or automation. Google Sites is particularly suitable for a solo professional, local service provider, nonprofit, school, club, consultant, contractor, or small team that needs a modest public presence.
Google Sites is a practical fit when most customers will arrive through referrals, a Google Business Profile, social media, direct links, maps, or offline marketing. A local tradesperson who needs a home page, service descriptions, service area, contact details, testimonials, and a quote form may not need the complexity of WordPress or Shopify.

Google Sites is a poor primary platform when the website itself is expected to operate as a sales, publishing, ecommerce, or marketing engine. Businesses planning regular articles, many location pages, online transactions, sophisticated lead routing, memberships, customer accounts, or a highly distinctive brand experience should choose a more extensible platform from the beginning.
A quick fit test
Choose Google Sites if most of the following statements are true:
- The business needs fewer than roughly ten core pages.
- The site is primarily informational.
- The business already uses Google Drive, Docs, Forms, or Workspace.
- Several employees may need to edit the site.
- A simple Google Form is sufficient for inquiries or registrations.
- The business does not need native payments, bookings, memberships, or product management.
- The owner values fast setup and low maintenance more than fine-grained design control.
- A basic website is likely to remain useful for at least two years.
If ecommerce, regular publishing, extensive SEO, advanced conversion tracking, CRM automation, or custom customer experiences is central to the plan, Google Sites is usually the wrong foundation.
What can an SMB build with Google Sites?
Google Sites can handle a useful range of small, mostly informational projects. A typical public business site can include a home page, About page, services page, contact page, FAQ, team page, portfolio, downloadable resources, and embedded map or video.
Recommended Free Tools
| Use case | Why Google Sites can work | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Local service website | Simple pages can explain services, coverage areas, contact methods, and pricing guidance. | Advanced booking, lead routing, and location-page SEO require external tools or another platform. |
| Freelancer or consultant portfolio | Projects, biography, services, documents, and contact forms are straightforward to assemble. | Highly distinctive art direction and advanced conversion journeys are difficult. |
| Event or campaign site | Pages can publish schedules, maps, registration forms, and downloadable information quickly. | Ticketing, payments, and complex attendee workflows usually live elsewhere. |
| Nonprofit, school, or club site | Teams can collaboratively publish announcements, resources, calendars, and policies. | Membership accounts, donations, and complex permissions may need external services. |
| Intranet or knowledge base | Google Drive documents, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and other internal resources can be brought together. | Permissions and ownership must be managed carefully to avoid exposing internal information. |
| Client resource center | A restricted site can organize onboarding materials, instructions, and shared documents. | Custom-domain authentication behavior should be tested before relying on restricted pages. |
Why do SMBs choose Google Sites?
1. Setup is accessible to nontechnical owners
Google Sites uses a visual, section-based editor rather than requiring hosting configuration, database administration, server security patches, plugin updates, or theme-code editing. Owners familiar with Google Docs and Drive can generally understand the editing model quickly.
Independent reviews from TechRadar and ThemeIsle likewise describe Google Sites as easy to use while identifying its limited customization and functionality as the corresponding trade-off.
2. Maintenance is lighter than self-hosted WordPress
Google handles the hosting environment, so the business does not have to maintain a web server or routinely patch a collection of plugins. That does not make a business website maintenance-free: owners still need to update content, review permissions, check forms, monitor domains, and test embedded services.
3. Google ecosystem embeds are genuinely useful
Google Sites supports embedded Google files, videos, website content, and other supported assets. A business can use Google Forms for inquiries or registrations, Google Maps for location information, YouTube for demonstrations, and Drive files for resources or documentation. The Google Sites documentation lists the platform’s supported creation, embedding, publishing, Analytics, accessibility, and export workflows.

Embeds should not replace critical page content unnecessarily. An embedded service can change its policies, become private, render poorly on mobile, introduce consent issues, or shut down. Keep essential service descriptions, contact details, and instructions as native page content wherever possible.
4. Collaboration is a major advantage
Google Sites distinguishes between editors, viewers, and the owner. Editors can modify the site, viewers can access a published site, and the owner controls important administrative actions such as connecting a custom domain. A Google Workspace administrator may also control organization-level access and policies.
Use a business-controlled account for ownership rather than an employee’s personal Google account. The business should document the owner, maintain a backup administrator or responsible account, and review access when staff leave. A site tied to one employee can create an avoidable continuity problem if that employee’s account becomes inaccessible.
5. The constrained editor can be an advantage
Google Sites supports themes, templates, page sections, text, images, buttons, layouts, and embedded content. The constrained system encourages consistent layouts and reduces the chance that an owner will break the responsive design while editing.
The limitation is reduced visual differentiation. Google Sites offers less control over spacing, responsive breakpoints, typography, interactions, custom code, and conversion-focused layouts than Webflow, WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace. For a basic information site, that trade-off may save time. For a premium brand, the same trade-off may reduce perceived value and conversion performance.
What are Google Sites’ main limitations?
Google Sites can be extended with links and embeds, but external workarounds do not turn Google Sites into a native ecommerce system, blog CMS, CRM, or booking platform. The following distinction is important when evaluating the product.
| Requirement | Google Sites position | What the limitation means for an SMB |
|---|---|---|
| Ecommerce | Poor; no native catalog, cart, checkout, inventory, or order management | Use Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix Ecommerce, Squarespace Commerce, or an external checkout. |
| Blogging | Weak; no conventional native publishing workflow | Manual pages or a linked service make archives, categories, authors, and content scale harder. |
| SEO controls | Weak to moderate | A basic site can be indexed, but advanced metadata, technical optimization, structured content, and large-scale publishing are less controllable. |
| Design flexibility | Weak to moderate | Clean layouts are quick, but highly differentiated brand experiences are difficult. |
| Marketing automation | Poor natively | CRM synchronization, lead scoring, conditional workflows, and automated funnels require external services. |
| Bookings | Usually external | A business may embed or link a scheduling service, but Google Sites does not provide a complete native booking workflow. |
| Custom code | Restricted | Businesses cannot treat the site like a blank code-controlled application with plugins and databases. |
| Memberships and accounts | Not a native strength | Customer logins, subscriptions, and personalized account areas require another system. |
TechRadar, Business.org, and ThemeIsle all identify combinations of limited SEO controls, blogging and ecommerce gaps, restricted customization, and fewer advanced integrations as significant Google Sites weaknesses.
Can Google Sites collect leads with forms?
Google Sites can collect basic leads by embedding a Google Form. A Google Form is adequate for contact requests, event registrations, simple quote requests, surveys, volunteer signups, and basic customer intake.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A form is not the same as a complete lead-generation system. Before launch, test the entire submission path, including email notifications, mobile appearance, spam handling, consent language, data access, and where submissions are stored. Businesses that need lead scoring, CRM synchronization, conditional workflows, payment collection, appointment logic, or automated follow-up will need external tools or another website platform.
Is Google Sites good for SEO?
Google Sites can support a basic public website that is indexed, but Google Sites is a weaker strategic choice for businesses that depend on SEO-led growth. The defensible criticism is not that Google Sites cannot rank; the problem is that Google Sites provides fewer publishing and technical optimization controls than dedicated CMS platforms.
Google Sites may be sufficient for a branded business search, a local service site with a few core pages, referral traffic, or a simple online business card supported by a Google Business Profile and offline promotion. Google Sites becomes a poor fit for dozens of articles, topical-authority campaigns, many nonbranded search terms, programmatic location pages, rich product and category SEO, or complex internal-linking architectures.

Google Sites also lacks a conventional native blog workflow. A business can create pages manually or link to another publishing service such as Blogger, but the workaround makes categories, tags, archives, author management, RSS, search optimization, editorial scale, and content organization less convenient. Be Visible’s discussion of Google Sites blogging and independent reviews from Business.org and TechRadar identify this publishing limitation.

Does Google Sites support ecommerce?
Google Sites does not support ecommerce as a native platform. Google Sites does not provide a built-in shopping cart, product catalog, inventory management, product variants, tax and shipping rules, abandoned-cart recovery, customer accounts, order management, discount codes, product feeds, or a complete multi-payment checkout.
A business can link to or embed an external checkout, payment form, marketplace, donation tool, or store. That approach can work for a small number of transactions, but the external system remains responsible for the commerce operation. An ecommerce comparison from Ecommerce CEO appropriately treats Google Sites as suitable for simple public pages rather than as a serious competitor to a dedicated selling platform.
Is Google Sites really free?
The basic Google Sites editing experience can be free or low-cost, but the complete cost of a business website is not necessarily zero. A business may still pay for domain registration, business email, Google Workspace, booking software, CRM services, email marketing, payment processing, advanced forms, reviews, or ecommerce.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle Workspace is separate from the basic Google Sites experience. According to Google’s business-edition pricing page observed August 16, 2026, the listed US prices were as follows:
| Google Workspace plan | Annual or fixed-term price | Flexible monthly price | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Starter | $7 per user per month | $8.40 per user per month | 30 GB pooled storage per user |
| Business Standard | $14 per user per month | $16.80 per user per month | 2 TB pooled storage per user |
| Business Plus | $22 per user per month | $26.40 per user per month | 5 TB pooled storage per user |
The prices above are US-listed prices and may vary by billing method, promotion, tax, geography, or account eligibility. The Workspace plan is not required simply because a business is evaluating Google Sites in general; the plan becomes relevant when the business also wants Workspace email, shared storage, administration, and collaboration features.
Google’s pricing page displayed a temporary 30%-off promotion for some plans running from July 7, 2026 through October 7, 2026. Promotional pricing is not permanent pricing, so verify eligibility and the final checkout amount before budgeting.
The correct calculation is total operating cost: domain plus email plus external tools plus staff time plus the possible cost of rebuilding later. Google Sites may be the cheapest sensible choice when the business needs little beyond a public information site. A free editor can become an expensive choice if the business quickly outgrows it.
Can an SMB use a custom domain?
Yes, Google documents connecting a custom domain to a published Google Site. The official setup path is:
- Open the site in Google Sites.
- Select Settings.
- Select Custom domains.
- Select Start setup.
- Enter the domain.
- Select Next.
- Follow the instructions for the domain registrar.
- Select Done.
According to Google’s custom-domain documentation, up to five custom domains can be connected to one site, and DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to become visible. Only the site owner can connect the domain. Work or school accounts may require administrator involvement, and domain verification may require adding a TXT record through Google Search Console.

The exact DNS process depends on the registrar. A custom domain also does not add ecommerce, advanced SEO, a blog, better design controls, or CRM automation. A branded URL improves presentation, but it does not change the underlying capabilities of Google Sites.
Google warns that some features relying on Google Account authentication may behave differently after custom-domain mapping because Google cookies are not sent in the same way. Test restricted pages and embedded content before launch, particularly when a site is used as a client portal or internal resource center.
How secure and maintenance-free is Google Sites?
Google Sites removes much of the infrastructure maintenance associated with self-hosted websites, but a business should not describe the platform as risk-free or completely maintenance-free. The most important risks are account ownership, sharing permissions, embedded-file access, domain configuration, and accidental publication.
Ownership failure
If an employee’s personal Google account owns the site, the business may lose editing rights or domain-management control when the employee leaves. Use a business-controlled account, define a backup administrator, and document who controls the site and domain.
Permission leakage
An embedded Google Drive file, Sheet, or Slide may have broader sharing permissions than intended. Visitors could see internal information or encounter an access prompt. To audit an embed:
- Open the original embedded file.
- Review its sharing settings.
- Open the published page in an incognito or logged-out browser.
- Remove or replace sensitive embeds.
- Test the published page again after making changes.
Domain and DNS problems
A custom domain that does not resolve immediately may be affected by DNS propagation, an incorrect CNAME or TXT record, unverified ownership, registrar-specific instructions, or conflicting DNS records. Google states that DNS changes can take up to 48 hours; do not repeatedly change records before that period has elapsed unless the registrar or Google identifies a clear configuration error.

Google’s help center includes a Use Analytics with your site topic. Before launch, verify that the current site setup supports the desired Analytics configuration, that the custom domain and published URL are tracked correctly, and that conversions—not only page views—are recorded. Businesses must also assess consent requirements based on their geography and audience, especially when forms or external services are involved.
Can a Google Site be exported or migrated?
Google documents data-export support for Sites alongside Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Drive, Forms, and Vids. Export support does not mean that a Google Site can be moved to WordPress, Wix, or another builder with one click.
A future migration may require manually copying page text and images, rebuilding navigation, recreating forms, reconnecting the domain, creating redirects, checking indexing, replacing embeds, and reinstalling analytics or conversion tracking. Businesses should assess their growth plans before choosing Google Sites, particularly if the website may become a significant source of organic traffic.
Common signs that a site is outgrowing Google Sites include regular article publishing, many service or location pages, several editorial roles, automated lead routing, online transactions, advanced conversion tracking, structured metadata requirements, or a need for sophisticated redirects.

Who should use Google Sites?
Google Sites is a sensible choice for the following SMB and organization profiles:
- A local contractor needing a small service and contact website.
- A freelancer, coach, or consultant building a basic portfolio and inquiry page.
- A nonprofit, school, club, or community organization publishing information and resources.
- A small team already standardized on Google Workspace.
- An organization creating an employee intranet or internal knowledge base.
- A business launching a temporary campaign, event, project, or microsite.
- A company that gets customers mainly from referrals, maps, social media, and offline promotion.
- An owner who prefers a constrained editor to the complexity of themes, plugins, hosting, and updates.

Google Sites decision scorecard
The following scorecard summarizes the practical trade-off for an SMB evaluating Google Sites:
| Criterion | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Setup speed | Excellent |
| Ease of use | Excellent |
| Collaboration | Excellent, especially for Google Workspace users |
| Basic-site cost | Excellent, although domains, email, and add-ons may cost extra |
| Hosting maintenance | Excellent |
| Google ecosystem integration | Excellent |
| Design flexibility | Weak to moderate |
| Branding control | Moderate |
| SEO control | Weak to moderate |
| Blogging | Weak |
| Ecommerce | Poor |
| Marketing automation | Poor |
| Booking functionality | Usually requires external tools |
| Plugin ecosystem | Poor |
| Internal portals | Excellent |
| Temporary sites | Excellent |
| Migration flexibility | Moderate, but migration is likely to be manual |
Final verdict: should an SMB choose Google Sites?
Choose Google Sites when simplicity, collaboration, and low maintenance matter more than growth features. Google Sites is excellent for a modest informational site, internal portal, client resource center, event hub, or temporary web presence.
Do not choose Google Sites as the primary platform when the website must sell products, publish at scale, generate substantial nonbranded search traffic, manage bookings or memberships, automate marketing, or deliver a highly customized brand experience. In those cases, the extra cost and complexity of Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Shopify, or Webflow may be cheaper than rebuilding after Google Sites has become a constraint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Google Sites use a custom domain?
Yes. Google Sites supports custom domains through Settings → Custom domains → Start setup. Google says one site can have up to five custom domains, DNS changes may take up to 48 hours, and only the site owner can connect a domain; work or school accounts may require administrator help.
Is Google Sites free for a business website?
The basic Google Sites editing experience can be free or low-cost, but a complete business website may still require a paid domain, Google Workspace email, booking software, CRM, payment processing, or other third-party services. Google Workspace business plans are billed separately.
Can Google Sites rank in Google search?
Google Sites can support a basic public website that is indexed, but it provides fewer publishing and technical SEO controls than dedicated CMS platforms. Google Sites is therefore better for branded and referral traffic than for businesses planning large-scale content or nonbranded SEO growth.
Can Google Sites sell products online?
Google Sites does not provide native ecommerce features such as a product catalog, shopping cart, inventory management, checkout, or order management. A business can link to or embed an external store or checkout, but Shopify or another dedicated ecommerce platform is a better primary choice for online selling.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Google Sites is a good SMB option when the required website is small, informational, collaborative, and easy to maintain. Google Sites is not a good general-purpose business platform when ecommerce, advanced SEO, publishing, bookings, memberships, automation, or extensive branding controls are essential.
