What changed in the Pixel Linux Terminal storage limit?
The change happened in two reported stages. Android Authority reported the earlier 16GB cap and the beta behavior that replaced it; Google’s Android release notes document the Linux development environment and its supported Pixel families. The reported storage figures apply to beta behavior, not a promise that every Pixel build allocates storage identically.

“Infinity minus 1GB” is shorthand for that allocation behavior, not literal unlimited capacity. The reserve was reported for the Beta 4 behavior; the later QPR1 Beta 3 change is described as dynamic ballooning rather than a fixed allocation slider. Actual available room remains bounded by the phone’s physical storage and its existing use.
How much storage can Linux use now?
There is no single maximum that applies to every supported Pixel. The practical ceiling depends on the phone’s internal storage capacity and how much is free after Android and your personal files take their share. A handset with more available internal storage can give the VM more room, but the Linux environment does not get priority over the host phone’s needs.

That means the answer is not simply “16GB” anymore, nor can a user infer a specific new number from the model name alone. Check available storage on your own phone before enabling the environment, and leave room for Android, apps, updates, and files you expect to add. The 1GB figure belongs to the reported Android 16 Beta 4 allocation behavior; it should not be treated as a universal free-space guarantee for all later builds.

The list is selective: it does not establish support for every Pixel. Google’s release notes also tie availability to Android-version requirements, so a listed model alone does not guarantee the feature is available on every software build. The specific minimum build requirements are not stated in the compatibility information summarized here.
How to enable Linux Terminal on a supported Pixel
- Open Settings and go to System > Developer options > Linux development environment.
- Enable the Linux development environment. If Developer options are not available on your phone, the cited setup instructions do not provide the steps to reveal them.
- Open the Terminal app. On first launch, it downloads the required Linux image.
Google describes this as a Linux terminal running in a virtual machine. Android’s Virtualization Framework (AVF) documentation places the capability within Android 16’s protected-virtualization work. The environment is Debian-based and runs alongside Android rather than replacing the phone’s operating system.
